There is no single best eSIM plan for every Australian address or trip. The right choice depends on reception where you need it, the ongoing price after any offer ends, data expiry and speed limits, and whether you need an Australian number with calls and texts. The examples below are dated 4 October 2026 and should be checked against each provider’s current plan terms before purchase.
How to choose an Australian eSIM plan
An eSIM is a digital way to install a mobile service; it does not create a separate network. Reception still depends on the provider’s network access, your location and a compatible device. Before buying, compare the factors that affect the service you will actually get:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Network and location: identify whether the plan uses Telstra, Optus or Vodafone access, directly or through a wholesale arrangement. Check the provider’s coverage map for your home, commute and travel route.
- Total cost: distinguish an introductory price from the regular recharge or monthly price, and check how long the offer lasts and who qualifies.
- Data and validity: compare the included amount with its expiry period, any bonus-data duration, rollover or banking rules, and charges or speed restrictions after the allowance.
- Performance: confirm whether the plan includes 4G, 5G or both, and whether it states a speed cap. A 5G label does not guarantee 5G availability at a particular location.
- Calls and activation: check national and international call and SMS inclusions, number requirements, eSIM compatibility, and activation deadlines. The ACCC recommends reading the plan’s Critical Information Summary, which can explain inclusions, contract length and termination fees: ACCC guide to choosing a mobile phone service.
The ACCC reported average monthly data use of 9GB for retail prepaid customers in its 2024–25 reporting period. That is historical market context, not a prediction of what an individual will need in 2026: ACCC Communications Market Report 2024–25.

Most plans were marked as eSIM-available; check the live page for current terms: Telstra prepaid plans and rates. |

Which plan fits your situation?
For a short visit
Match plan validity to the length of the stay rather than choosing by the largest data headline. Telstra’s listed seven-day option is an example of a short-expiry plan, but its stated 5GB was during a bonus period; confirm what data is included when you activate and whether the expiry covers the whole visit.
For high data use
Exetel’s reported 130GB with data banking and Spintel’s reported 100GB may suit people who use a lot of data, but both examples have a 150Mbps cap in the secondary listing. Compare the full monthly cost, excess-data rules and the network’s coverage at your locations; the headline allowance alone does not establish value.

For travel beyond major cities
Do not assume that a national brand or wholesale arrangement will provide reception along every route. Check the relevant provider map for each destination and any long stretches between them. The examples here do not establish which network has the best reception for a particular traveller.
For the lowest ongoing cost
Compare the regular price after introductory discounts expire, not just the first recharge. For example, Tom’s Guide listed Pivotel Mobile Swift at AU$11.45 monthly for six months and AU$22.90 thereafter; the lower figure is not the recurring price. Confirm the promotion and eligibility directly with the provider.

What to verify before activation
- Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked for the network you intend to use.
- Use the provider’s coverage map to check the exact places that matter to you; note whether the plan accesses the network directly or through a wholesale provider.
- Read the current Critical Information Summary and confirm regular price, bonus duration, expiry, data banking, excess-data treatment, speed cap and call/SMS inclusions.
- Confirm any new-customer, eSIM-only, activation-date or recharge-deadline conditions before paying.
- Follow the provider’s current installation steps. For Optus prepaid, the cited process is through the My Optus app; other providers may use different activation flows.
