For a balanced TDM Neo sound, start with modest bass boosts at 60 and 120 Hz, a small cut at 250–500 Hz, and controlled vocal presence from 1–4 kHz. In the TDM companion app, use the following profile: 60 Hz +3 dB, 120 Hz +2 dB, 250 Hz −2 dB, 500 Hz −1 dB, 1 kHz +2 dB, 2 kHz +2 dB, 4 kHz +1 dB, 8 kHz 0 dB, and 16 kHz +1 dB. Set the app preamp near −3 dB if available. This gives vocals more definition while adding bass weight without relying on extreme boosts.

The recommended TDM Neo EQ profile

Open the official TDM companion app, select Neo, and choose its custom EQ. Enter these values as your starting point:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Band Gain What it changes
60 Hz +3 dB Sub-bass weight, kick impact and the sense of depth in low notes
120 Hz +2 dB Bass body and warmth
250 Hz −2 dB Reduces low-mid muddiness that can cover vocals
500 Hz −1 dB Reduces boxiness and congestion
1 kHz +2 dB Moves vocal fundamentals forward
2 kHz +2 dB Improves intelligibility and consonant definition
4 kHz +1 dB Adds presence; lower it if voices become sharp
8 kHz 0 dB Keeps sibilance under control while you evaluate the profile
16 kHz +1 dB Adds a small amount of air and openness

If Neo’s app exposes a preamp or master-gain control, set it around −3 dB. The preamp creates room for the positive band boosts. Without one, reduce the largest boosts by 1 dB if you hear crackling, flattening or other signs of digital clipping.

These are editorial starting values, not a manufacturer-calibrated correction curve. Your ear position, seal, source quality, listening volume and whether Neo is being used as headphones or as a speaker will all change the result.

Why these settings improve both vocals and bass

Low bass: 60 and 120 Hz

The 60 Hz lift supplies the lowest part of kick drums, bass guitars and electronic sub-bass. A restrained +3 dB increase is enough to add weight without consuming the headroom that large low-frequency boosts require. The 120 Hz boost adds the audible body of bass instruments and helps music avoid sounding thin at moderate volume.

A bass boost is not automatically a clearer bass boost. If 60 Hz is raised aggressively, Neo may reach its excursion or amplifier limits sooner, while the extra energy can mask detail elsewhere. Keeping the two low-frequency boosts small and separate makes it easier to identify which part of the bass needs adjustment.

Low-mid cleanup: 250 and 500 Hz

Many “muddy” mixes accumulate energy between the upper bass and low mids. Cutting 250 Hz by 2 dB removes some of that thickness; the 500 Hz cut is deliberately smaller because too much reduction there can make instruments and voices sound hollow. Together, these cuts create space for speech without requiring an exaggerated treble boost.

Vocal presence: 1, 2 and 4 kHz

Vocal fundamentals and the intelligibility of spoken words sit mainly through the 1–2 kHz area. The +2 dB boosts at both bands make a singer or podcast voice easier to follow. A smaller +1 dB move at 4 kHz adds consonant edge and presence. JBL’s general EQ guidance places vocal intelligibility around 800 Hz–2 kHz and speech-consonant clarity around 2–4 kHz, while warning that excessive presence boosts can become harsh.

Treble restraint: 8 and 16 kHz

Leaving 8 kHz flat prevents the first adjustment from exaggerating “s,” “sh” and cymbal sounds. The +1 dB at 16 kHz is optional air rather than a clarity fix. If your recordings are already bright, set 16 kHz to 0 dB too. Treble should not be used to compensate for bass-induced masking until the low-mid balance is correct.

How to apply the EQ in the TDM app

  1. Charge and connect Neo. Turn on the headphones and pair them with the phone running the official TDM companion app. Keep the headphones close to the phone during setup.
  2. Select the correct device. Open the app’s device screen and choose TDM Neo. The app also provides device controls and firmware management, so confirm that the connected product is Neo before changing audio settings.
  3. Open the custom EQ. Choose the custom EQ option rather than a fixed preset. Enter each band from the table, including the negative values at 250 and 500 Hz.
  4. Set headroom. If a preamp is shown, use approximately −3 dB. If the app has no preamp, initially lower the largest positive boosts by 1 dB instead of turning the phone’s volume down to hide clipping.
  5. Save a named profile. Use a descriptive name such as “Vocal plus bass” so you can return to the baseline after experimenting. Keep one untouched profile for comparison.
  6. Verify the listening mode. Neo’s physical twist changes it between headphone and portable-speaker operation. Apply and evaluate the EQ in the mode you actually intend to use; do not assume a headphone adjustment will sound identical when the drivers are opened into speaker mode.
  7. Listen at a consistent volume. Compare the bypassed sound and the custom profile at approximately the same loudness. A louder setting can appear clearer even when the tonal balance has not improved.

The exact screen names can change with app updates, but the relevant functions are custom EQ, listening-mode selection and device controls. The user manual directs owners to the app for custom EQs, power settings and other controls.

Fine-tune vocals without losing bass

If vocals are still recessed

First add 1 dB at 1 kHz and listen again. If the voice remains buried but does not sound nasal, add 1 dB at 2 kHz instead. Make one change at a time and return to the previous value if guitars, piano or snare drums become too forward. Do not immediately raise every presence band; stacking boosts at 1, 2 and 4 kHz can make the entire mix aggressive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If vocals sound sharp, nasal or sibilant

Reduce 4 kHz by 1 dB first when the voice has an edgy or piercing quality. If “s” and “t” sounds are the problem, reduce 8 kHz by 1–2 dB even though it starts flat. For a generally hard upper-mid sound, reduce 2 kHz by 1 dB. JBL’s frequency guidance identifies 2–4 kHz as useful for clarity but cautions that too much presence becomes harsh; clarity is therefore a balance, not a maximum-boost target.

If the voice is clear but thin

Undo part of the 250 Hz cut before adding more 1 kHz. Try −1 dB at 250 Hz rather than −2 dB, then reassess. A voice that lacks chest and warmth often needs less low-mid removal, not more treble.

Increase bass without boom

If bass lacks weight

Add only 1 dB at either 60 or 120 Hz. Choose 60 Hz when sub-bass and kick depth are missing; choose 120 Hz when bass instruments lack body. Listen for several songs before making another change. Large simultaneous boosts at both bands can reduce headroom and make the sound seem louder rather than deeper.

If bass is boomy

Lower 120 Hz by 1–2 dB first because that region contributes much of the audible warmth and boom. If the congestion is more like a boxy resonance, lower 250 Hz by 1 dB. Keep the 60 Hz boost initially; cutting the deepest band first can remove impact while leaving the actual boom untouched.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If kick drums thump but bass lines disappear

Reduce 60 Hz by 1 dB and leave 120 Hz at its starting value, or make a small 120 Hz reduction if the bass line is masked by warmth. This separates sub-bass impact from the upper-bass energy that can blur note-to-note definition.

Headphone mode and portable-speaker mode are different targets

TDM describes Neo as a hybrid that transforms from high-fidelity headphones into a portable speaker with a physical twist. The driver-to-ear geometry, room reflections and listening distance change when the speaker mode is opened, so the same EQ cannot be expected to produce the same tonal balance in both configurations.

Create separate profiles if the app allows it: one for close, sealed headphone listening and another for speaker use. In speaker mode, judge vocals from the position where you normally sit rather than with your ears pressed close to the drivers. Room surfaces can add bass or make the upper mids seem more prominent, particularly near walls and corners.

When switching modes, check that the app still shows the intended mode and that your profile has not been replaced by a preset. The manual specifically documents Neo’s twist modes, making this verification important before diagnosing an EQ problem.

Prevent clipping and preserve detail

Every positive EQ move increases the level of some content. Several boosts can overload the digital signal even when the phone’s volume indicator is not at maximum. A negative preamp around −3 dB is a practical starting point for this profile, but it is not a guarantee for every recording or firmware version.

  • Watch for crackling on kick drums, flattened transients, or distortion that appears only on loud passages.
  • Lower the preamp or the largest boost rather than applying a large cut to unrelated frequencies.
  • Test with both quiet and highly mastered recordings; heavily compressed tracks reveal clipping sooner.
  • Keep the phone, app and Neo volume controls out of their maximum positions while you are diagnosing distortion.

If no preamp exists, reduce the +3 dB 60 Hz band and +2 dB bands by 1 dB, then compare again. A clean, slightly less boosted profile is preferable to a louder profile that clips.

A repeatable listening method

EQ judgments are unreliable when made from a single chorus or while changing several controls at once. Use a short set of familiar material that includes a spoken voice or podcast, a sparse vocal recording, an acoustic track, a bass-heavy track and a dense mix with cymbals. You do not need special test files; familiarity matters more than genre.

  5. Make one 1 dB change, listen through a complete section, and write down whether the change helped.
  6. Return to bypass occasionally so your ears do not adapt to the boosted profile.

Evaluate both quiet and normal listening levels. At low volume, a little bass and presence can restore balance; at high volume, the same boosts may become tiring or distort sooner.

What is and is not established about Neo’s frequency response

TDM’s reviewed official materials describe the product, app controls and listening modes but do not publish a numeric Neo frequency-response measurement or a manufacturer-approved EQ curve. That means no set of values can be presented as a laboratory correction for every Neo unit. The profile in this guide uses broad frequency roles and conservative changes so you can adapt it to your own unit.

Unit fit, ear shape, seal, source mastering and firmware can produce audible differences. If your Neo sounds different from the profile’s description, that does not necessarily indicate a fault. Use the baseline as a controlled starting point, then keep only changes that improve voices and bass in the material you actually hear.

Useful app and product context

The official TDM app supports custom EQ settings, sound presets, listening-mode switching, Game Mode, multi-device pairing, device location and firmware updates. The manual also points to the app for custom EQs, power settings and device controls. Update-related changes can affect how settings are displayed, so record your preferred values before installing firmware and verify the profile afterward.

TDM’s product page lists Neo at $249 and advertises more than 200 hours of battery life on the 2026 page access. Those figures describe the product listing rather than an EQ performance measurement; battery duration and price can vary by region, taxes, offers and usage conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to reset the profile

Reset to a flat EQ or the app’s default preset if you cannot determine whether a problem is tonal or mechanical. A reset is also useful after changing ear pads, moving between headphone and speaker modes, updating firmware or switching to a substantially different source. Reapply the baseline profile only after confirming that the un-EQ’d signal is clean.

If distortion remains with EQ bypassed, at moderate volume and across multiple sources, EQ is unlikely to be the cause. Check the physical connection, pairing and mode state, then consult TDM support or the manual rather than compensating with more cuts and boosts.
