Best Epson Printers for Colorful, Detailed Art Editions: Key Facts and Picks

Choose the Epson SureColor P700 for editions up to 13 inches wide, the SureColor P900 for 17-inch desktop prints, and the SureColor P5370 when built-in roll handling and higher sheet capacity matter. All three use Epson’s 10-color UltraChrome PRO10 pigment platform, which Epson positions for a wide gamut, fine-art media and archival output. The right choice depends first on print width and media workflow, then on volume, roll support, profile management and the continuing cost of Epson-brand cartridges.

Epson’s published specifications and manufacturer statements describe these recommendations; no independent controlled print tests are cited here. Availability, street pricing, cartridge costs and paper profiles can change, so verify those details with a current seller and your chosen media before ordering.

Quick choice: which Epson art printer fits your edition?

Model Best fit Published strengths Important checks

SureColor P900 Wider desktop prints up to 17 inches 10-color UltraChrome PRO10, professional roll and sheet handling, media up to 1.5 mm, ICC and Epson Print Layout support Roll handling is optional; permanence figures are expected ratings under test conditions; Epson-brand cartridges are specified
SureColor P5370 17-inch professional work and larger runs Built-in roll support, auto cutter, cassette for up to 100 sheets from 8.5 × 11 to 17 × 22 inches, 10-color PRO10 The $2,095 figure is a January 24, 2024 launch MSRP, not a current quote; check support, stock and supply pricing

If your edition is physically wider than 17 inches, Epson announced the P7370 and P9370 on April 23, 2025. They are production-sized options for photographic and fine-art roll and sheet media, with support for rigid boards up to 1.5 mm. They require more workspace and a production-level budget than the desktop models.

Why pigment ink and gamut matter for art editions

Art editions place different demands on a printer than ordinary office documents. Smooth gradients, saturated hues, neutral blacks and predictable results across several papers matter more than raw pages per minute. The P700, P900 and P5370 use Epson’s 10-color UltraChrome PRO10 pigment system rather than a basic four-color office set. Epson says the violet-containing formulation expands gamut and helps produce vibrant color.

  • ZERO CARTRIDGE WASTE — Epson EcoTank printer helps reduce the amount of cartridge waste ending up in landfills; Cartridge-free printer uses high-yield ink bottles; Each replacement ink bottle set is equivalent to about 100 individual ink cartridges⁴

Pigment particles sit in a binder on the media surface, so paper choice and the printer’s profile are part of the image-making process. A matte cotton paper, a baryta-style sheet and a glossy paper will not render the same file identically. Select a profile made for the exact printer-and-paper combination, and keep that profile with your edition records so a reprint can be matched later.

None of the published specifications establishes a universal color-accuracy score or an independent ranking against other manufacturers. Treat the PRO10 gamut statement as Epson’s product claim, then make your own proofing decision with the papers and lighting in your studio.

Epson SureColor P700: the compact 13-inch choice

What it is suited to

The P700 is the most compact fit when your largest finished sheet is within Epson’s 13-inch paper-width class. That covers many small photographic editions, portfolio pages, greeting-card-sized art and limited-run prints without moving to a larger floor-standing workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Documented capabilities

  • Epson specifies a 10-color UltraChrome PRO10 archival pigment ink system.
  • The violet-containing PRO10 set is marketed as providing a wide gamut and vibrant colors.
  • Epson lists fine-art and third-party media support.
  • Sheets up to 1.5 mm thick are supported on the product specification.
  • Epson specifies Epson-brand cartridges only.

The 1.5 mm figure is a maximum supported sheet thickness, not a promise that every handmade board will feed reliably. Measure the actual stock, account for curl and surface texture, and use the feed path Epson specifies for thick media. A paper that is technically within the thickness limit can still be difficult if it is warped or poorly scored.

When the P700 is the sensible buy

Select it when 13 inches is enough, most jobs are sheet-fed, and you value a smaller desktop footprint. It avoids paying for a 17-inch chassis you cannot use fully. Before committing, price a complete set of replacement cartridges, identify the ICC profiles available for your preferred papers and confirm that your computer and operating system are supported by the current driver and layout software.

Epson SureColor P900: 17-inch desktop flexibility

What changes from the P700

The P900 moves into the 17-inch class while retaining the 10-color UltraChrome PRO10 platform. That extra width allows larger wall prints, wider portfolio sheets and more generous borders without stepping immediately into a production-format machine.

Epson lists professional handling for rolls and sheets up to 1.5 mm thick, but roll handling is optional. If you expect to print long panoramas or batches from a roll, include the roll accessory and the space needed to load and cut it in your budget and layout. A base P900 configuration should not be treated as a complete roll-to-finished-print system until the accessory is confirmed.

Color-managed workflow

The P900 supports full ICC profiles and Epson Print Layout. That combination is useful when you want the application to manage color consistently and to save repeatable settings for a particular paper. Build a documented workflow: identify the source color space, choose the paper profile, decide which application controls conversion, and disable competing color corrections so two systems are not correcting the same file.

Permanence figures: useful, but conditional

Epson’s P900 page cites expected Wilhelm Imaging Research display-permanence ratings of up to 200 years for color and up to 400 years for black-and-white prints made with UltraChrome PRO10. Those are expected ratings under the cited test and display conditions. They vary with paper, framing, light, humidity and storage, so they are not a guarantee that every P900 print on every medium will last for those periods.

For a collectible edition, record the paper, ink set, profile, date and storage or framing recommendation. That documentation is more useful to a buyer than an unqualified claim that any print will last 200 or 400 years.

Who should choose it

The P900 is the balanced choice for an artist who needs 17-inch sheets but does not require the P5370’s integrated production features. It is also the model to examine when you want Epson Print Layout and ICC-based control in a desktop footprint. Epson still specifies Epson-brand cartridges, so include recurring ink expenditure and the effect of infrequent use on maintenance in your ownership plan.

Epson SureColor P5370: built-in roll support and higher capacity

Features Epson announced

In its January 24, 2024 announcement, Epson described the P5370 as a 17-inch professional printer with built-in roll support and an automatic cutter. Its cassette holds up to 100 cut sheets in sizes from 8.5 × 11 inches through 17 × 22 inches. It uses the 10-color PRO10 ink set and Epson says it produces smooth tonal renditions and fine detail.

Those tonal and detail statements are Epson’s description of the product, not an independent test result. They indicate the intended market: photographers, artists and studios that need repeatable 17-inch production with less manual loading than a purely sheet-oriented desktop setup.

Why the P5370 can justify its larger footprint

  • Roll work: integrated roll support avoids treating a roll accessory as an afterthought.
  • Batch sheets: a 100-sheet cassette can reduce reloads during an edition, provided your chosen stock is compatible with the cassette.
  • Cut output: the auto cutter is relevant to roll jobs and unattended sequences.
  • 17-inch width: it covers the same headline width class as the P900 while targeting a more production-oriented workflow.

Epson listed a $2,095 MSRP in that January 24, 2024 announcement. That is a launch MSRP, not a current price. Check today’s seller quote, warranty terms, shipping, installation requirements and cartridge availability rather than using the announcement number as a purchasing promise.

When it is overkill

If you print only occasional 8 × 10 or 13-inch sheets, the cassette, cutter and roll mechanism add cost and space without solving a problem. Choose the P5370 when the time saved on loading, the need for roll media or the volume of 17-inch work is real and recurring.

P7370 and P9370: when desktop width is no longer enough

Epson’s April 23, 2025 announcement introduced the P7370 and P9370 for professional fine-art and graphic-design output. Epson describes both as supporting photographic and fine-art roll and sheet media plus rigid boards up to 1.5 mm. They are wider-format machines, so the decision involves more than image quality: measure doorways, worktables, ventilation, paper storage and the distance needed to handle long rolls.

  • Convenient FEATURES — Auto 2-sided printing, built-in USB and memory card slots (3).
  • Hands-free, voice-activated printing (2) — Print a variety of creative projects and everyday documents, including your to-do and shopping lists.

These models make sense only when your editions need production-sized widths or throughput and your studio can support that class of equipment. Epson’s April 23, 2025 announcement does not establish a current price, running cost or independent print comparison, so request a complete quote and workflow demonstration before treating either as a better value than a P900 or P5370.

How to choose: a practical decision sequence

  1. Set the maximum finished width. Choose the P700 if 13 inches covers your largest sheet. Move to the P900 or P5370 for 17-inch work. Consider the P7370 or P9370 only when you need a wider production format.
  2. Decide whether you need rolls. The P900’s roll handling is optional; the P5370 includes built-in roll support and an auto cutter. If every job is a single sheet, do not pay for a roll workflow you will not use.
  3. Measure your heaviest and thickest media. Epson lists up to 1.5 mm for P700 and P900 sheets, while the P7370/P9370 announcement also cites rigid boards up to 1.5 mm. Confirm the exact feed path and paper profile for your stock.
  4. Estimate edition volume. Count sheets per edition, proof sheets, expected reprints and cleaning cycles. A larger cassette helps only if your paper is approved for that path and you can store a loaded batch safely.
  5. Choose your color-management method. If you want profile-driven control, the P900’s documented ICC and Epson Print Layout support is a useful criterion. Whichever model you select, use one clearly defined color-management owner.
  6. Price ownership, not just the printer. Add cartridges, maintenance supplies, paper, profiles, replacement parts, shipping and any roll accessory. Epson’s cartridge-only specification for the P700 and P900 makes supply pricing a material part of the decision.
  7. Check current availability. Product pages and announcement prices can outlive stock situations. Confirm the exact model, warranty, driver support and cartridge supply in your region.

Paper and media: the part that determines whether an edition succeeds

Match surface to the artwork

Glossy and luster surfaces can emphasize saturation and small detail; matte fine-art papers can give a softer, more tactile presentation. The surface changes contrast, black density and perceived saturation, so select it as part of the artwork rather than as a late packaging choice.

Confirm thickness and feed path

Measure paper with a caliper if the stock is near the 1.5 mm limit. Keep sheets flat, remove damaged corners and follow the printer’s specified rear or front path for thick media. If a sheet skews, stop the job and inspect the path instead of repeatedly forcing the same board through the printer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the correct profile

Download the profile made for the exact printer, paper surface and ink combination. A profile for a similar-looking paper can shift neutrals or clip saturated colors. Keep a profile log with the edition master file, and make a small proof before committing an entire batch.

A repeatable color workflow for detailed editions

  1. Prepare the master file. Keep an untouched master and a print-ready copy. Record the file’s dimensions, resolution, embedded profile and intended output size.
  2. Select the paper first. Choose the final surface and thickness, then install or select its printer profile rather than making color decisions with generic paper settings.
  3. Assign color control once. Decide whether the editing application or the Epson driver will convert colors. Turn off the other system’s correction to avoid double conversion.
  4. Set the physical media options. Enter paper type, source, border settings and thickness instructions. On the P900, Epson Print Layout can centralize ICC and layout choices.
  5. Print a proof. Use a representative crop containing skin tones or neutrals, saturated colors, shadows and fine line detail. Inspect it under the lighting in which the edition will be viewed.
  6. Adjust deliberately. Change one variable at a time—profile, rendering option, brightness or paper—and label each proof. Do not overwrite the approved master with an experimental correction.
  7. Run the edition. Check nozzles and media alignment before a long batch, load only clean, flat sheets, and keep the approved settings unchanged.
  8. Document the result. Save printer model, ink set, paper, profile version, driver, date and any drying or handling interval you use. This creates a reproducible recipe for replacements.

Ink, maintenance and long-term ownership

The P700 and P900 are specified for Epson-brand cartridges only. That limits the relevance of generic replacement-ink prices and means you should verify the exact cartridge set and current listing before buying a printer. Published specifications do not establish a controlled cost-per-print figure for any model, so do not use an online estimate as a guaranteed edition cost.

Budget for paper waste during proofing, nozzle checks, cleaning cycles and occasional misfeeds. Pigment printers can produce excellent work while still requiring routine use and maintenance; a studio that prints only a few sheets per month should plan how it will keep the machine ready rather than assuming every cartridge drop becomes saleable artwork.

Store unopened media and cartridges in the conditions recommended by their manufacturers, protect finished prints from unnecessary light and humidity, and use archival packaging appropriate to the paper. These practices support longevity but do not convert Epson’s conditional permanence ratings into a universal guarantee.

Common pitfalls and fixes

Buying by color count alone

Ten colors and a violet channel do not eliminate the need for a suitable paper profile or a controlled workflow. If a print looks dull, check the profile, paper setting and application-versus-driver color control before blaming the ink set.

Assuming every 17-inch model has the same workflow

The P900 and P5370 share a 17-inch class, but the P900’s roll handling is optional while the P5370 is announced with built-in roll support, an auto cutter and a 100-sheet cassette. Compare the complete configuration, not just the width on the box.

Ignoring thick-media handling

A stated 1.5 mm maximum does not mean every board feeds identically. Verify the path, flatten curled sheets and test the exact stock before an edition run.

Treating permanence as a sales guarantee

Use the P900’s 200-year color and 400-year black-and-white figures only with their Wilhelm Imaging Research display-test qualification. Tell collectors the paper and display conditions that apply to your edition.

How these choices compare with an ink-tank photo all-rounder

A third-party buying guide describes Epson’s EcoTank ET-8500 as a photo-and-document all-rounder with inexpensive ink running costs but a relatively high upfront cost. That is an editorial characterization, not a controlled comparison with the SureColor models. An all-rounder may suit mixed household documents and casual photos, while the SureColor P700, P900 and P5370 are the candidates to examine when fine-art media, pigment permanence expectations, wide gamut and edition consistency are the priority.

For broader market context, Creative Bloq’s best art printers guide discusses the P900 as an archival-quality option, while Digital Camera World’s photo-printer guide provides the ET-8500 observation. Neither source supplies an independent, head-to-head laboratory ranking for the exact SureColor candidates covered here.

What the published evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Epson’s product pages and announcements establish the models’ paper-width classes, ink systems, media claims and, for the P5370, the cassette, cutter and launch MSRP. They do not establish current stock in every country, exact cost per print, measured color accuracy, lifetime maintenance cost or a universal best model for every artist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is why the safest buying process is specification-led and proof-led: narrow the field by width and feed requirements, obtain profiles for your actual papers, make a proof, and price the complete ownership package. The printer that fits your media and repeatability needs is a better choice than the one with the most impressive headline specification.

Final recommendation

For most compact art editions, start with the SureColor P700. Choose the P900 when 17-inch output and ICC-oriented desktop control are essential, adding the optional roll setup only if your work needs it. Choose the P5370 when integrated roll support, automatic cutting and a 100-sheet cassette will materially improve a recurring 17-inch production workflow. Treat the P7370 and P9370 as wider-format production investments, not automatic upgrades. In every case, select the paper and profile alongside the printer, and verify current supply costs and availability before placing the order.
