For the quickest improvement, remove Epic’s built-in download cap: open Settings → Download Settings, clear Limit Download Speeds, restart the launcher, and retry. Then use Download Manager to put the game first in the queue and avoid competing installs. If the result is still poor, check Epic’s service status, switch from Wi‑Fi to wired Ethernet, clear the device cache, review domain and proxy settings, and use DNS troubleshooting. Startup performance is a separate issue: Epic’s new Launcher Preview reports faster cold starts in its own limited, third-party test, but it has feature gaps and individual results vary.
The fastest settings-first fix
Epic’s own troubleshooting order starts with the launcher’s download limit, not with registry edits, VPNs, driver utilities, or third-party “optimizer” software. The limit is a client-side ceiling. If it is enabled, a fast internet connection can remain underused even when Epic’s servers and your local network are healthy.

- Open the launcher settings. Select the Settings icon, choose Settings, and scroll to Download Settings.
- Remove the cap. Clear Limit Download Speeds.
- Restart Epic Games Launcher. Do not simply close the settings panel; restart the launcher so the changed download policy is applied.
- Retry the download. Observe the transfer for several minutes rather than judging it from one momentary speed reading.
In Epic’s Early Preview interface, the related Download speed limit and Active download speed limit fields should be empty before the restart. A blank field means no value has been entered there; it does not mean Epic’s servers will provide unlimited speed.

Removing the cap does not help if several large jobs are competing for the same connection or storage drive. Open Download Manager from the lower-left corner of the launcher and make the queue reflect what you actually need first.

Put one game in Priority Downloads
Choose Priority Downloads for the title you want completed first. This is more reliable than leaving several installs and updates to compete at once. Once the priority title is finished, the remaining queue can proceed.
Reorder the queue
Drag queued titles into the order you want. Put a game you plan to play soon above optional updates, language packs, or another game that can wait. Queue order matters most when your connection, disk, or both are saturated.
Review the manager’s other controls
Download Manager also exposes controls for:
- Setting or removing download speed limits.
- Allowing or blocking installs while you are playing another game.
- Scheduling automatic updates.
- Choosing the default installation directory.
Allowing installs during gameplay can be convenient, but it can also make a game feel less responsive because downloading and unpacking use network, CPU, disk, and sometimes memory resources. If responsiveness matters more than finishing an update immediately, block installs during gameplay and let the queue run when you are idle.
Check Epic’s service status before changing your computer
A local setting cannot repair an Epic-side incident. Epic’s support flow begins with the Epic Games Public Status page, whose component list includes Store login, download and installation, purchasing and refunding, wallet, browsing, and related services.
Look specifically for an incident affecting downloads or installation. If that component is degraded or unavailable, record the incident time and retry after Epic reports recovery. Changing DNS, reinstalling the launcher, or moving cables during an active service incident can add work without addressing the cause.

A status-page snapshot associated with this guidance listed Epic Games Store download and installation as operational. That is a time-specific observation, not a promise about the next download; always use the live status page when diagnosing a current failure.
Improve the physical connection path
Epic recommends a wired Ethernet connection for downloads that are slower than expected. Wi‑Fi can be affected by distance from the router, walls, interference, channel congestion, and power-saving behavior. Ethernet removes the wireless hop between the computer or console and the router or switch.

When wired Ethernet is worth trying
- The launcher speed rises and falls sharply while other devices use Wi‑Fi.
- The computer is several rooms away from the router.
- Large downloads fail, pause, or repeatedly reconnect.
- You can connect the device directly to a router or network switch for the duration of the download.
A Cat6 Ethernet cable is a practical choice for a nearby PC or console. It can improve stability, but it cannot exceed the capacity of your internet service, local network, storage device, or Epic’s available server path. If those are the bottleneck, changing cable category will not create additional bandwidth.
Try another internet connection as a diagnostic
When available, test the same download on another connection. A different connection can separate a home-router or ISP problem from a launcher or Epic-service problem. Treat this as a short diagnostic, not as a recommendation to use a metered mobile connection for a large game.
Clear cache and repair network conditions
If the limit is removed, the queue is controlled, and the status page is healthy, Epic’s support sequence moves to local cache and network configuration.

Clear the device cache
Use the cache-clearing procedure appropriate to your operating system or console, then restart the launcher and retry. Cache clearing can remove stale local data that interferes with authentication, manifests, or download management. It does not increase the speed of an already saturated internet plan, so evaluate it as a repair step when behavior is abnormal rather than as a guaranteed performance upgrade.
Whitelist Epic domains
Security software, managed networks, DNS filters, and firewalls can block an otherwise healthy download. Epic recommends whitelisting the required Epic domains. Apply the exception in the security product or network policy that is actually filtering traffic; adding a random exception to an unrelated program will not help. If the computer is managed by an employer, school, or family administrator, that policy may need to be changed by its owner.
Flush DNS or test a public DNS service
DNS troubleshooting can help when names resolve incorrectly, slowly, or to an unreachable endpoint. Flush the device’s DNS cache using your operating system’s network tools, then retry. If the problem continues, test a public DNS service supported by your network and region. Epic’s guidance does not specify one provider or promise a percentage improvement, so treat this as an experiment: keep the change only if it resolves the actual symptom.
Disable proxy servers while testing
A proxy can add a failure point or route traffic through a congested path. Temporarily disable a configured proxy, restart the launcher, and test again. If the device requires a proxy for work or school access, do not remove it without permission; instead ask the network administrator whether Epic traffic is permitted.
Separate download speed from disk and installation speed
The number shown by the launcher may change when it is downloading, verifying, unpacking, or writing files. A fast connection can therefore appear idle while the storage device processes the data. Queueing several installs can amplify this effect because multiple jobs compete for disk access.

- Leave enough free space for the game and its temporary installation files.
- Avoid starting several large installs at once when the goal is the earliest completion of one title.
- If the launcher alternates between network activity and long pauses, watch whether disk activity remains high; that pattern points to local processing rather than an internet-only problem.
- Use the default install directory control in Download Manager when the current drive is nearly full, unusually slow, or shared with demanding applications.
These observations help identify the bottleneck; they do not establish a universal speed gain from a particular drive or setting.
A practical diagnostic order for slow downloads
Follow this order so each test changes one major variable at a time.
- Check service health. Look at Epic’s Public Status page for Store login and download/installation components.
- Remove the launcher cap. Clear Limit Download Speeds, restart, and retry.
- Control the queue. Use Priority Downloads, reorder titles, and pause competing installs or updates.
- Test the connection path. Use wired Ethernet or another connection if available.
- Repair local conditions. Clear the cache, review Epic-domain allowlists, flush DNS, and test without a proxy.
- Observe the symptom. Note whether the transfer is continuously slow, intermittently stalls, or pauses while disk activity remains high.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: changing several network settings at once and then being unable to tell which change mattered.

Epic labels the comparison 1.8× faster for the Preview. The figures were produced in October 2026 by Keywords Studios, an independent third party commissioned by Epic. The three lowest-end machines were excluded, and the page warns that individual results vary. These numbers are therefore a published comparison under stated test conditions, not a prediction for every PC.

Feature trade-offs before installing Preview
Epic says purchases, installed games, cloud saves, and progress carry over. It also says some legacy social and account-management features are not yet available. Check the Preview’s current limitations before switching if you depend on those features. A faster cold start is useful only if the missing functions do not disrupt your normal workflow.
Preview settings that affect downloads
The same core download controls still matter: remove the speed limit, restart after changing it, and use Download Manager to prioritize and reorder jobs. In the Early Preview interface, confirm that the download-limit fields are empty. Preview status does not remove the need to check service health or network conditions.

Settings and “fixes” that are not established as universal solutions
Epic’s documented guidance supports the launcher limit control, Download Manager queue management, service-status checks, wired Ethernet, cache clearing, domain allowlisting, DNS troubleshooting, and proxy checks. It does not establish a guaranteed percentage improvement from any one change.

Do not treat Engine.ini edits, registry changes, a particular DNS provider, VPNs, driver utilities, or third-party PC optimizers as official universal fixes for Epic downloads. They can create new variables, conflict with security policy, or hide the real bottleneck. If you try any nonstandard change, keep a record of the original setting and be prepared to reverse it.
A compact checklist before a large download
- Epic’s download and installation status is operational.
- Limit Download Speeds is cleared, and the launcher has been restarted.
- The target game is first in Download Manager’s queue.
- Competing installs and updates are paused or scheduled for later.
- The device is on wired Ethernet when practical.
- The install drive has sufficient free space and is not overloaded by other heavy work.
- Epic domains are allowed by security software and network filters.
- The device cache has been cleared if the launcher behaves abnormally.
- DNS has been flushed or tested through another resolver only when name-resolution problems are suspected.
- A configured proxy has been disabled for testing, or its administrator has confirmed that Epic traffic is allowed.
The practical order of operations
Start with the setting Epic can change immediately: remove the download limit and restart. Next, make Download Manager serve one priority title instead of several competing jobs. Then rule out an Epic-side incident and improve the connection path with Ethernet or a controlled alternate-connection test. Cache, DNS, allowlist, and proxy work belongs after those checks, because each addresses a different failure mode. For startup, evaluate the Launcher Preview separately from download tuning and weigh its published test result against the legacy features you still need.
