Best Epic Games Launcher alternatives for managing your PC game library

Playnite is the best all-purpose Epic Games Launcher alternative for most PC players. It combines Steam, Epic, GOG, EA, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Xbox and emulator libraries in one Windows interface, keeps library data on your own PC, and offers desktop and controller-friendly fullscreen modes. Choose GOG GALAXY instead for a more polished catalog and social layer, or the Xbox app for Windows if you mainly use Game Pass and want a native hub for supported, installed games.

Quick comparison

App Best for What it combines Organization Fullscreen or handheld use Data and account model Cost model
Playnite Large, mixed collections and emulators Multiple PC stores, local games and emulated titles through integrations Tags, filters, metadata, playtime tracking, themes and add-ons Unified desktop and fullscreen interfaces; suitable for Windows gaming handhelds Library information is stored exclusively on your PC; connected accounts still authenticate with their original services Free and open source, with no paid upgrades, subscription, feature restriction or paywall described by its product site
GOG GALAXY Polished presentation, metadata and social features Connected PC and console platforms Filtering, sorting, tags, custom covers and backgrounds, friends, achievements and statistics Primarily a desktop catalog experience; handheld suitability depends on the Windows environment and controls Separate platform connections; completeness and reliability can vary Client is presented as a free way to manage connected libraries; purchases and subscriptions remain with their original stores
Xbox app for Windows Windows users and PC Game Pass members Supported storefront installations surfaced in the Xbox library My Library and Most Recent lists, with a straightforward native interface Designed for Windows PCs and handhelds Centered on supported, installed Windows games and Microsoft account services No separate paid tier is identified for the library view; Game Pass access is a separate subscription decision

What an Epic Games Launcher alternative can—and cannot—do

There are two different products people call a “launcher.” A storefront client sells or manages games for one ecosystem. An aggregator displays games owned or installed through several ecosystems and then hands each launch back to the original client. Playnite and GOG GALAXY are primarily aggregators; the Xbox app combines a native Windows experience with Microsoft’s own storefront and subscription ecosystem.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

An aggregator does not merge ownership, licenses, cloud saves or friends lists into a new universal account. Your Steam, Epic, GOG, EA, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net or Xbox account remains the authority for its games. When you select a title, the relevant store client may still open, sign you in and apply its own updates, DRM or entitlement check. A game can therefore appear in one catalog while still requiring two applications and the original account to run.

Integration coverage is also not permanent. Each connector depends on the platform’s login flow, API and policies, and a connector can become incomplete or temporarily unreliable after a service changes. Check the current integration or add-on status before reorganizing your entire collection.

Playnite: the strongest all-purpose choice

Why Playnite stands out

Playnite is a free, open-source video game library manager for Windows. Its documented integrations cover Steam, GOG, EA, Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, Xbox and emulated games. It can import libraries, organize local and store-based titles, track playtime and launch a game on its original platform. That combination makes it the most capable choice when your collection includes several stores, ROMs or manually installed games.

The client provides both a conventional desktop view and a fullscreen interface. You can change themes, install add-ons and build a presentation around your own categories rather than a store’s marketing priorities. Playnite’s documentation states that library information is stored exclusively on the user’s PC, which is attractive if you want a local catalog instead of another hosted profile.

There are no paid upgrades, subscriptions, feature restrictions or paywalls described in Playnite’s official product information. The trade-off is time: a flexible, multi-source library requires more initial configuration than a single-store client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set up Playnite for a multi-store library

  1. Install Playnite on Windows. During first launch, select the desktop, fullscreen or both interfaces according to how you play. Desktop mode is easier for administration; fullscreen mode is better from a sofa or handheld.
  2. Open the library or add-on management area. Browse the available library integrations and install connectors for the services you actually use. Avoid adding accounts that contain no games; fewer connectors make troubleshooting easier.
  3. Authenticate each service separately. Sign in through the connector’s normal account flow. Playnite can display the result in one catalog, but the original service still controls ownership and authentication.
  4. Run an import or library update. Let each connector finish before starting another. Large collections may need time to download names, cover art, descriptions and playtime information.
  5. Add emulators and local games deliberately. Point Playnite to the emulator executable and the folders containing your games, then verify one title before importing an entire directory. Keep legally obtained game files and firmware in locations you can back up.
  6. Normalize the catalog. Use tags for platform, genre, series, controller support or backlog status. Correct duplicate entries, remove installers and identify games that need a different executable or launch argument.
  7. Switch to fullscreen and test from a controller. Confirm that navigation, launching, returning to the library and closing a game all work without a keyboard. Adjust the theme and add-ons only after the basic launch path is reliable.

Where Playnite requires more hands-on work

  • Connectors are plug-ins, so an account may need reauthorization or a connector may lag behind a store change.
  • Different stores expose different metadata. You may need to edit artwork, genres, release dates or platform tags for consistency.
  • Emulator entries require correct emulator paths, game directories and, in some cases, per-title launch settings.
  • Windows is Playnite’s primary platform. Its documented handheld examples include Steam Deck and ROG Ally, but the exact experience depends on the handheld’s operating system and controller setup.

Choose Playnite when breadth, local control and customization matter more than a zero-configuration first launch.

GOG GALAXY: the polished catalog and social option

What GALAXY does well

GOG GALAXY can connect multiple platforms and present games and friends in one application. Its official descriptions cover importing games from PC and console platforms into a master collection, then filtering, sorting and tagging that collection. You can apply custom game backgrounds and covers, while the connected-platform view can include friends, achievements and statistics.

That makes GALAXY a strong fit if the problem is not only “Where is this game installed?” but also “Can I make my collection look coherent and see my activity in one place?” The interface is more curated than a raw folder list, and the social layer is a meaningful advantage for players who want cross-platform friends and achievement information alongside their library.

Connect accounts and organize the master collection

  1. Install GALAXY and sign in with a GOG account. Treat this account as the hub for the catalog, not as a replacement for the accounts that own your other games.
  2. Open the platform-integration settings. Add only the PC or console services you want represented, then complete each service’s authentication flow.
  3. Allow the initial synchronization to finish. Check that game names, ownership indicators, friends, achievements and statistics have imported as expected.
  4. Use filters and sorting before editing artwork. Filter by platform, installed status or other available fields, then apply tags for backlog, co-op, genre or hardware.
  5. Customize the titles you care about. Replace inconsistent covers or backgrounds and correct obvious metadata errors. Reserve extensive manual editing for games you expect to keep in the collection.
  6. Test a launch from each connected platform. Confirm that the original client opens and that the correct account is signed in before relying on the unified view.

GALAXY’s boundaries

Each integration is a separate connection, and the amount of information available can differ by platform. A friend list or achievement set may be richer for one service than another, and a previously working connection can require reauthentication. GALAXY also remains closely associated with the GOG ecosystem even when it aggregates outside libraries. It is therefore best for readers who value presentation and social organization, not for an emulator-heavy setup that needs extensive custom launch rules.

The Xbox app for Windows: the simplest native hub

What Microsoft changed in 2025

In an Xbox Wire announcement dated September 15, 2025, Microsoft described an aggregated gaming library for Windows PCs and handhelds. Supported PC storefront installations can automatically appear in My Library and in the Most Recent list, so users can find and launch games from multiple locations inside the Xbox PC app.

“When you install a game from a supported PC storefront, it automatically appears in ‘My Library’ within the Xbox PC app, as well as the ‘Most Recent’ list of titles in the sidebar.” — Jason Beaumont, VP of Experiences at Xbox

This is a useful change for Windows players who want a native starting point without building a plug-in-based catalog. It is especially convenient for PC Game Pass members and owners of Windows gaming handhelds that already use Xbox services.

Use the Xbox app as your daily launcher

  1. Update Windows and the Xbox app. The aggregated view depends on Microsoft’s current app and supported storefront integrations.
  2. Sign in with the Microsoft account used for your Xbox or Game Pass entitlements. Keep the other store accounts signed in to their own clients as well.
  3. Install a game through a supported PC storefront. After installation, look in My Library and Most Recent rather than expecting every owned but uninstalled title to appear with identical detail.
  4. Launch from the Xbox app and observe the handoff. The original storefront client may open to verify the license, update the game or complete sign-in.
  5. Pin the app or add it to the handheld’s startup flow. Test controller navigation, suspend/resume behavior and access to games installed on each storage location.

When the Xbox app is not enough

The experience is centered on supported storefronts and installed Windows games. It is less suitable than Playnite for emulator libraries, unusual executables, extensive metadata editing or a collection spread across services that Microsoft does not support. Its advantage is reduced setup, not maximum control.

Choose by the problem you are trying to solve

You own games on almost every major PC store

Choose Playnite. Its documented connectors cover the broadest mix in this comparison, and its tagging and add-on system can handle a collection that is too varied for a single storefront’s library page.

You want one beautiful catalog with friends and achievements

Choose GOG GALAXY. Its filtering, sorting, tags, custom covers and backgrounds, friends, achievements and statistics address the organization and social side of a fragmented collection.

You mainly use Windows and Game Pass

Choose the Xbox app. Its native My Library and Most Recent views are designed to surface supported installed games with minimal configuration.

You have emulators or manually installed games

Choose Playnite. The documented emulator support, local-game organization, custom add-ons and fullscreen interface make it the most adaptable option here.

You want the least maintenance

Start with the Xbox app if your games are within its supported Windows storefront scope. Every multi-store aggregator requires some account maintenance, but Playnite’s plug-in flexibility creates more opportunities for customization—and more settings to maintain.

You are building a Windows gaming-handheld interface

Playnite’s fullscreen mode is the strongest choice when you want to tune navigation, themes and launch behavior. The Xbox app is the simplest native choice for a Windows handheld already centered on Microsoft services. GOG GALAXY can provide a unified collection, but controller ergonomics and integration coverage should be tested on the specific device. A handheld does not remove the need for store accounts or their original launcher clients.

Common problems and practical fixes

A game is missing

  • Confirm that the owning account is authenticated in the aggregator.
  • Run the connector’s library refresh after installing or claiming a title.
  • Check whether the service is supported by the current integration, rather than assuming every game in the account is exposed.
  • For a local or emulated game, verify the scanned folder and executable path.

The same game appears twice

Duplicates usually indicate two sources for one title—for example, a store copy and a manually added executable. Keep the entry whose launch path and metadata are correct, then hide or remove the redundant record. Do not delete the underlying game files while cleaning the catalog.

Clicking Play opens the wrong account or client

Sign out of the original storefront client, sign back in with the account that owns the game and retry the launch. Aggregators pass control to the original service; they cannot transfer an entitlement between accounts.

Artwork or metadata is inconsistent

Use tags and filters for information that must remain stable, then edit artwork or descriptions only where the inconsistency affects discovery. Keep a small, deliberate tag vocabulary so that “RPG,” “role-playing” and “roleplaying” do not split the same category.

A connector stopped updating

Reauthenticate the affected account, update the client or integration, and run a fresh import. If the service recently changed its login or API behavior, wait for the connector to regain compatibility before rebuilding your library around it. Keep the original store clients installed until launches work reliably from the new hub.

A safe migration plan

  1. Inventory your sources. List each store, Xbox account, emulator and local-games folder before installing a new hub.
  2. Pick one primary aggregator. Start with Playnite for breadth, GALAXY for presentation, or Xbox for a supported Windows-centric setup.
  3. Connect one account at a time. Verify imported titles and a test launch after each connection.
  4. Standardize tags and installation locations. Decide how you will mark backlog, installed, co-op, controller-ready and emulator titles.
  5. Test updates and sign-in recovery. Launch a game after a client update and confirm you know which original account it requires.
  6. Keep the original clients and backups. The aggregator is a catalog and launch layer; it is not a replacement for store ownership records, save systems or installers.
  7. Only then switch to fullscreen or handheld use. Solve authentication and launch issues in desktop mode before optimizing controller navigation.

Bottom line

Install Playnite if you want the broadest, most customizable library across PC stores, emulators and local games, with data kept on your PC and a fullscreen mode for couch or handheld play. Pick GOG GALAXY when polished metadata, artwork, friends, achievements and statistics are your priorities. Pick the Xbox app for Windows when you want a native, low-maintenance view of supported installed games and already live in the Windows or Game Pass ecosystem.
