For Enshrouded 1.0 on PC, start with the Quality preset, select DLSS Quality on a compatible GeForce card or the equivalent Quality mode in FSR or XeSS, keep render scale at 100% when your GPU can hold your target, and lower Shadows from High to Medium before making larger compromises. That combination is the most reliable starting point for a sharp image without giving up unnecessary frame rate.

If performance is still inconsistent, reduce Fog and Indirect Lighting by one step, then move the upscaler from Quality to Balanced. Keep Texture Quality as high as your video memory allows. Turn off motion blur if you want a cleaner moving image, but treat that as a preference rather than a guaranteed performance fix.

Update Enshrouded before judging image quality

The settings below target the PC build of Enshrouded 1.0 released on October 15, 2026. Nvidia users should install Keen Games’ October 16, 2026 Hotfix 1.0.0.2 before changing a long list of graphics options. That hotfix fixed a dense-grey-fog rendering problem that could make the game look broken even when the underlying settings were sensible.

A post-hotfix comparison is meaningful; a comparison made while the grey-fog bug is present is not. Restart the game after updating, load the same save or world area, and then evaluate sharpness, lighting and foliage.

Hardware baseline and realistic expectations

Keen Games lists an NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super as the recommended graphics specification. Use that card class as a baseline for the recommended tier, not as a promise of a particular frame rate. Resolution, CPU performance, drivers, background applications, world activity and later patches all change the result.

Digital Trends uses RTX 2070 Super or Radeon RX 6700 XT-class hardware when describing its balanced guidance. That is a useful indication of the class of system being discussed, but it is not a universal benchmark. No published source establishes one FPS number that applies to every GPU, resolution and graphics preset.

Enshrouded runs on Steam Deck, and Keen Games says optimization work continues. A Deck profile therefore needs its own testing rather than a direct copy of a desktop preset. The game’s developers have also described improving performance on lower- and middle-range systems as a major 1.0 challenge, so behavior can change as patches arrive.

Recommended starting profile

Apply this profile first, then change one option at a time. It gives you a stable control point for troubleshooting instead of mixing several changes whose effects cannot be separated.

Setting Starting value Why this is the starting point When to change it
Preset Quality It preserves a strong visual baseline without the heavier cost of Maximum Quality. Use Maximum Quality only after confirming that frame-time stability and image quality already meet your goal.
Upscaler on compatible GeForce hardware DLSS Quality Enshrouded Hub reports that DLSS Quality keeps vegetation edges sharp while providing a substantial performance uplift. Move to Balanced when the GPU remains the limiting factor; use Performance only when lower internal resolution is necessary.
Upscaler on AMD hardware FSR Quality Quality mode is the closest like-for-like starting point when DLSS is unavailable. Move to Balanced only after testing Quality in the same demanding area.
Upscaler on Intel hardware XeSS Quality It provides the same Quality-first decision path on supported Intel hardware. Use Balanced if frame time is still too high and the resulting image remains acceptable.
Render scale 100% Native render scale retains the clearest source image when the GPU can sustain the target. Use the upscaler before making a large render-scale reduction or sacrificing texture detail.
Shadows Medium Enshrouded Hub reports a 6–7% FPS improvement when dropping from High to Medium, with minimal visual loss. Return to High if shadows are more important to you than the recovered frame time.
Fog Current Quality-preset value Fog can be reduced after the higher-return shadow change if frame time remains high. Lower it one step and check distant atmosphere, interiors and weather before going further.
Indirect Lighting Current Quality-preset value It is the next measured compromise in the recommended tuning order. Lower it one step after Shadows if the GPU is still over budget.
Texture Quality As high as VRAM permits Textures generally deliver more visible detail than aggressive lighting reductions. Reduce textures when you see VRAM-related hitching, streaming problems or instability.
Motion blur Off for a crisp image Disabling it makes movement easier to inspect and is a preference choice. Enable it only if you prefer the cinematic smoothing; do not expect a guaranteed FPS gain from switching it off.

DLSS, FSR or XeSS: which should you use?

DLSS Quality

Choose DLSS Quality when you have a compatible GeForce GPU. Its purpose is to render internally below the output resolution and reconstruct the final image, reducing GPU work while retaining more detail than a lower-quality mode. Enshrouded Hub specifically reports sharp vegetation edges and a substantial uplift with this mode, which matters in scenes where foliage shimmer is distracting.

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor | 180Hz, 1ms, AMD FreeSync, HDR10, Height Adj Stand, Black Equalizer, Virtual Aim Point, Auto Source Switch+ (LS27FG512ENXZA)
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Quality is the sensible first test because it leaves more detail than Balanced or Performance. If the game still misses your frame-time target, step down to Balanced and inspect thin foliage, fences, branches and distant geometry while moving. These areas reveal reconstruction artifacts sooner than a static wall.

FSR Quality

On AMD hardware, start with FSR Quality. Treat it as the equivalent starting mode, not as evidence that every GPU will deliver the same result as DLSS. Test the image at your actual output resolution and in the part of the world that normally produces your lowest frame times.

XeSS Quality

On supported Intel hardware, begin with XeSS Quality and use the same inspection method. The important decision is not the brand name of the upscaler but whether its Quality mode gives you acceptable edge stability and frame-time headroom at your resolution.

When Balanced or Performance makes sense

Balanced is the next step when Quality does not meet the target. Performance should be reserved for cases where the GPU remains over budget after the less destructive changes. Aggressive upscaling can introduce blur, shimmer and unstable foliage, so a higher average FPS number is not automatically a better result.

Which settings cost the most performance?

There is no universal ranking for every GPU and resolution, but the available guidance supports a practical order of operations.

  • Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
  • Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
  • Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
  • Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
  1. Shadows: the clearest measured opportunity in the available guidance is High to Medium, which Enshrouded Hub reports as a 6–7% FPS improvement with minimal visual loss.
  2. Fog and Indirect Lighting: lower each by one step after the shadow change if frame time is still too high. Make the changes separately so you can see which compromise your scene tolerates.
  3. Upscaler mode: move from Quality to Balanced only after the native-resolution or Quality-mode test. This usually changes perceived sharpness more than a small lighting adjustment, so inspect foliage and fine geometry while moving.
  4. Texture Quality: preserve it when VRAM permits. Reducing textures may remove surface detail without solving a GPU lighting bottleneck, while insufficient VRAM can cause its own streaming and hitching problems.

Maximum Quality is not the right control profile for troubleshooting because it makes it harder to identify which expensive setting is responsible for a bad frame time. Establish a stable Quality baseline first, then add visual load deliberately.

How to tune settings step by step

  1. Install the current build. Update to Enshrouded 1.0 and, for Nvidia systems, confirm that Hotfix 1.0.0.2 is installed. Restart the game after the update.
  2. Choose Quality. Do not begin with Maximum Quality. Record your output resolution and the frame-rate or frame-time behavior you want to improve.
  3. Select the Quality upscaler. Use DLSS Quality on a compatible GeForce card, FSR Quality on AMD, or XeSS Quality on supported Intel hardware.
  4. Set render scale to 100%. Keep it there if your GPU sustains the target. This gives you a clear reference for later upscaler comparisons.
  5. Set Shadows to Medium. This is the first evidence-backed compromise. Compare the same demanding area before and after the change.
  6. Check frame-time stability. Do not judge the change solely by an average FPS counter. Watch for hitching and 1% lows, especially while turning through dense foliage or entering a busy settlement.
  7. Lower Fog by one step. Recheck distant atmosphere, interiors and weather. If the visual cost is unacceptable, restore it and continue with Indirect Lighting instead.
  8. Lower Indirect Lighting by one step. Compare shaded areas, caves and rooms as well as open terrain.
  9. Move the upscaler to Balanced only if necessary. Inspect vegetation edges, thin geometry and moving detail for blur or shimmer.
  10. Adjust textures last. Keep Texture Quality high when VRAM allows. Reduce it only when memory pressure or streaming behavior points to textures as the problem.
  11. Set motion blur to taste. Turn it off for a cleaner view while moving, or leave it enabled if you prefer the effect. Treat this as an image preference, not a performance solution.

Keeping Enshrouded sharp while improving FPS

Use the upscaler before a large render-scale cut

Render scale controls how many pixels the game produces before the final image is displayed. A 100% scale preserves the most direct detail, but it can be expensive at high resolutions. A Quality upscaler is usually a better first compromise than a large manual reduction because it is designed to reconstruct detail from a lower internal image.

If Quality is too slow, test Balanced in the same location. Stop at the first mode that meets your frame-time goal without making foliage or fine edges visibly unstable. Performance mode can be useful on a heavily constrained GPU, but its lower internal resolution makes blur and reconstruction artifacts more likely.

Protect texture detail

Textures describe the fine surface information on walls, props and terrain. When your card has enough VRAM, keeping them high often produces a larger perceived-quality benefit than preserving every expensive lighting option. If VRAM is insufficient, however, texture streaming can cause hitching; in that case, reduce textures one step and retest instead of assuming the GPU core is the only limit.

Evaluate motion, not just screenshots

A still screenshot can hide temporal problems. Walk, rotate the camera and travel through foliage after every major change. Check whether edges crawl, shimmer or lose definition. The best profile is the one that remains readable while moving, not the one that looks perfect when paused.

Testing method that produces useful comparisons

Use four measures for every comparison:

  • Average FPS: useful for overall throughput, but insufficient by itself.
  • 1% lows or frame-time stability: reveals stutter and uneven delivery that an average can hide.
  • Foliage and shadow shimmer: exposes temporal instability in reconstruction and lighting.
  • Perceived sharpness while moving: captures blur that is not obvious in a static image.

Load the same demanding area after each change. A dense settlement, a heavily vegetated route or another location that regularly produces your worst frame times is more informative than an empty field. Change one setting at a time, allow the scene to settle, and record the result before making the next change. Published guides do not provide a universal benchmark covering every GPU and resolution, so a system-specific result must be labeled as such.

Practical profiles for different priorities

Balanced visual-quality profile

Use the Quality preset, DLSS/FSR/XeSS Quality, 100% render scale, Medium shadows, and textures as high as VRAM permits. Leave Fog and Indirect Lighting at their Quality-preset values until testing shows that you need more headroom. Disable motion blur if you want to inspect detail while moving.

GPU-limited performance profile

Start from the balanced profile, then lower Fog and Indirect Lighting one step each. If frame time is still high, change the upscaler from Quality to Balanced. Keep textures unchanged unless memory behavior indicates a problem. This order prioritizes the measured shadow saving and moderate lighting reductions before accepting the sharper loss associated with aggressive upscaling.

Visual-first profile

Use Quality as the control preset, keep render scale at 100%, select the Quality upscaler only if native rendering cannot hold your target, and raise Shadows from Medium to High if the added detail is worth the cost on your system. Keep Fog, Indirect Lighting and Texture Quality at the highest values your frame-time and VRAM testing supports. Maximum Quality should be treated as an optional final experiment, not a default recommendation.

Troubleshooting common problems

Nvidia users see dense grey fog

Update to the build containing Hotfix 1.0.0.2 before changing individual graphics settings. The hotfix specifically addressed this Nvidia rendering issue. After restarting, return to the Quality control profile and reassess the scene.

The image is blurry after improving FPS

Check the upscaler mode first. If you moved to Performance, return to Balanced or Quality and retest. Confirm that render scale has not been reduced substantially. If the image is still soft, inspect moving foliage and thin geometry; those reveal reconstruction loss more clearly than large surfaces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Foliage shimmers or edges crawl

Compare Quality and Balanced upscaling in motion, then check whether a lower lighting or shadow setting changed the appearance. Keep the mode that delivers acceptable frame-time stability without making vegetation unstable. Do not select a setting solely because its average FPS is higher.

Frame rate looks acceptable but play feels uneven

Focus on 1% lows and frame-time stability. Test the same demanding area, close background applications, and change one option at a time. Shadows, Fog, Indirect Lighting and upscaler mode should be tested separately so a single costly setting is not hidden inside a bundle of changes.

Textures cause hitching

Reduce Texture Quality one step and retest streaming behavior. Texture detail is worth preserving when VRAM permits, but memory pressure can produce a worse experience than a modest texture reduction.

Steam Deck performance differs from desktop guidance

Enshrouded runs on Steam Deck, but Keen Games says optimization work continues. Treat the desktop RTX 2070 Super recommendation as irrelevant to Deck tuning, use the same one-change-at-a-time method, and judge the result by frame-time consistency and moving-image clarity rather than by copying a desktop preset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to decide when you are finished

Stop tuning when the game remains stable in your known demanding area, the image is sharp enough during movement, and the remaining compromises are ones you consciously accept. A Quality preset with a Quality upscaler, 100% render scale where sustainable, Medium shadows and preserved textures is the strongest general starting point. From there, every change should answer a specific problem: recover frame time, reduce shimmer, improve clarity or avoid VRAM-related hitching.
