macOS Tahoe 26.x no longer uses one laptop pane called “Energy Saver.” The controls you need are in System Settings > Battery, Battery > Options, Battery > Battery Health, and System Settings > Lock Screen. For most MacBook owners, use Automatic for everyday work, switch to Low Power Mode when runtime matters most, shorten the display timeout, enable video-streaming optimization and (on compatible Intel models) automatic graphics switching, and restrict sleep-time wakeups. Keep Optimized Battery Charging enabled; on Apple-silicon Macs with Tahoe 26.4 or later, use an 80–90% charge limit when the Mac normally stays plugged in.

Labels and available controls vary by Mac model and Tahoe build. Apple’s current Battery guide is at Apple’s Battery settings guide.
1. Choose an Energy Mode
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Battery.
- Under Energy Mode, choose a mode separately for On battery and On power adapter.
Low Power Mode reduces energy use, making it the best choice for travel, reading, writing, browsing, and ordinary video. It can reduce performance or background activity, and Apple does not promise a fixed number of extra hours. On an M1 Mac the improvement may be modest because Apple silicon is already efficient; older Intel systems may show a larger practical difference, especially when fans or discrete graphics are active.
Automatic is the default compromise and is appropriate when responsiveness matters or workloads change frequently. Use it while plugged in unless you have a specific reason not to.

High Power Mode is for sustained demanding work on a limited set of newer MacBook Pro configurations. It is not a battery-saving setting and is unavailable on most M1 and all Intel MacBooks. Apple’s mode descriptions are available at Apple Support.
2. Configure Battery options
Go to System Settings > Battery > Options. Set each option according to how you use the Mac.
Slightly dim the display on battery
Turn this on. Lower brightness is one of the most direct ways to reduce display energy use. Also reduce brightness manually to the lowest comfortable level; no single brightness percentage produces a predictable saving across different screens and workloads.
Optimize video streaming while on battery
Turn this on if you watch HDR content away from power. Tahoe can play HDR video in standard dynamic range on battery, reducing energy requirements. The trade-off is lower HDR image quality. Ordinary SDR video is unlikely to change materially.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Automatic graphics switching
Enable this when it appears on an Intel MacBook with integrated and discrete GPUs. macOS then selects a graphics mode based on use. It may be absent on Apple-silicon Macs and cannot eliminate high GPU use from external displays, games, 3D applications, video editing, or other demanding software.

Power Nap
For maximum conservation, choose Never or disable it on battery. A compromise is allowing it only on the power adapter. Power Nap can check Mail, Calendar, and iCloud while asleep and, when plugged in, support activities such as updates and Time Machine. Apple identifies this control as Intel-only, so it may not appear on Apple-silicon MacBooks: Power Nap documentation.
Wake for network access
Choose Never on battery unless the Mac must provide shared printers, media, or other network resources while asleep. Choose Only on power adapter for a practical compromise.
Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter
Leave Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off turned off for energy saving. Enable it only for a deliberate purpose such as a long-running script, remote access, file sharing, download, or export; keeping the computer awake consumes more power.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPut hard disks to sleep when possible
Enable this if the option is present, but do not expect a noticeable change on most modern SSD-equipped MacBooks. It is more relevant to older Intel systems with traditional hard drives.
3. Set the display timeout
- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Lock Screen.
- Set Turn display off on battery when inactive and the corresponding power-adapter setting.
Use 3–5 minutes for maximum runtime, 5–10 minutes for balanced use, and roughly 15–30 minutes when plugged in, depending on your workflow. A shorter timeout prevents wasted screen-on time without requiring Low Power Mode. Apple’s sleep and display guidance is at Apple Support.

4. Protect long-term battery health
Optimized Battery Charging
Open System Settings > Battery, click the information button beside Battery Health or Charging, and keep Optimized Battery Charging enabled. The Mac learns charging patterns and may delay charging beyond approximately 80% when it expects a long period on power. It can occasionally charge to 100% to keep charge estimates accurate. This protects aging over time; it does not increase the runtime of the current charge.
Charge Limit on Apple silicon
On an Apple-silicon Mac running macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later, open System Settings > Battery, click the information button beside Charging, choose a limit from 80% to 100%, and click Done. Choose 80% for a mostly docked Mac, 90% when you need occasional portability, and 100% before travel or a long presentation. The Mac may vary slightly around the limit and may periodically reach 100% for calibration. Use Charge to Full Now from the battery menu when necessary. Apple’s requirements are documented at Apple Support.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Manage battery longevity on Intel
On Intel Mac laptops, go to System Settings (or System Preferences) > Battery > Battery Health and leave Manage battery longevity enabled. Apple says it can reduce the maximum charge based on temperature history and charging patterns to slow chemical aging. Turning it off may provide more immediate runtime but can shorten battery life: Apple battery health management.
5. M1 and Intel differences
| Feature | M1 MacBook | Intel MacBook |
|---|---|---|
| Low Power Mode | Available where supported; gains may be smaller | Available where supported; often useful on older, hotter systems |
| Charge Limit | Apple silicon plus Tahoe 26.4 or later | Not covered by Apple’s Charge Limit requirement |
| Power Nap | Usually not shown as the Intel control | Documented as Intel-only |
| Automatic graphics switching | Usually not applicable | Important on compatible dual-GPU models |
| High Power Mode | Not generally available on M1 | Unavailable |
| Manage battery longevity | Use the Apple-silicon charging controls shown | Explicitly documented under Battery Health |
M1 is not a complete model specification: Air versus Pro, screen size, cooling, battery condition, external displays, and Tahoe build affect both behavior and which controls appear.

7. Troubleshoot unexpected drain or charging behavior
A setting is missing
It may be unsupported, restricted to Intel or Apple silicon, exposed elsewhere in Tahoe, or automatically managed by the hardware. Do not force-enable it with a command or third-party utility. Apple states that available Battery options vary by Mac model.

- Check Power Nap.
- Set Wake for network access to Never.
- Disconnect external displays, docks, USB devices, and network adapters and retest.
- Check for apps or peripherals preventing sleep and review battery condition.
- Allow for indexing or software activity after a recent update.
Sleep settings cannot eliminate every source of drain; Power Nap and network wake intentionally perform activity.
Battery Health says “Service Recommended”
Open System Settings > Battery > Battery Health and review maximum capacity and condition. Battery-health management can limit maximum charge as part of aging control, but it cannot repair a physically degraded battery. Arrange service rather than disabling protections just to remove the warning.
The Mac stops near 80%
Optimized Battery Charging, a selected Charge Limit, or Intel battery-health management may be responsible. On supported Apple-silicon Macs, check Battery > Charging and choose Charge to Full Now when you need maximum immediate runtime.
Low Power Mode feels too slow
Switch to Automatic and retest. For sustained intensive work, performance and battery runtime are opposing priorities; no Battery toggle removes that trade-off.

An external monitor changes battery life
Displays, docks, USB devices, networking, and graphics acceleration can substantially increase power use. Battery settings may reduce some background activity but cannot make an accessory-heavy setup consume like an undocked MacBook.
8. Optional Terminal diagnostics
These commands inspect rather than replace Tahoe’s graphical settings. Output differs between Intel and Apple silicon and across macOS releases.
pmset -g— shows current power-management settings and profiles.pmset -g assertions— helps identify processes or services preventing sleep.pmset -g batt— displays current battery status.
Do not change undocumented pmset values as a universal fix. Start with the supported Battery and Lock Screen controls.
What matters most in practice
There is no universal “best” switch. Display brightness and timeout, active applications, HDR video, external displays, thermals, sleep-time wakeups, and battery condition often outweigh any single Energy Mode choice. Use Low Power Mode for maximum runtime, Automatic for normal work, and charging limits or optimized charging for lifespan; adjust the profile when your goal changes.
