Choose a managed computer-backup product when you want continuous protection with little setup; choose an end-to-end encrypted drive for private folder sync and phone photos; choose object storage plus a separate backup client when you need maximum control and can operate the system yourself. The crucial checks are backup scope, where encryption happens, who controls the keys, version and deletion handling, and how you will restore files.
Start with the backup job, not the brand
Cloud storage products use similar language for very different functions. A synchronized folder, a camera-roll uploader, an object-storage bucket and a full computer backup are not interchangeable. Decide what must be recoverable before comparing services.

Whole-computer protection
A computer-backup service watches the licensed computer, copies eligible data and keeps earlier revisions. This is the closest match to a set-up-once workflow: the software selects files according to its rules and runs without you manually choosing each folder. You still need to review exclusions, revision handling and the restore process.

Phone photo backup
Automatic camera uploads solve a mobile-specific problem. They do not automatically create a system image of a laptop or desktop. Initial uploads can take a long time for a large library, and mobile operating-system rules can interrupt background work.
Technical off-site backup
Object storage is a destination, not a complete backup application. You supply the client that selects files, encrypts them, schedules transfers, applies retention and performs restores. This model can be efficient and flexible, but every operational decision becomes your responsibility.
What “encrypted” means in practice
Encryption labels describe different trust models. Ask where data is encrypted, which metadata remains visible and how keys are recovered.

| Encryption model | What it protects | Key responsibility | Operational implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Provider-managed server-side encryption | Data at rest in the provider’s storage systems | The provider manages the encryption keys | Simple to use, but the storage service may be able to decrypt content under its own access model |
| Customer-supplied object key | Individual objects stored in an object-storage service | You supply and preserve the key | Losing the key can make the object unusable; key handling must be documented and tested |
| Client-side or end-to-end encryption | Content is encrypted on your device before upload | You control recovery material, depending on the product design | The provider cannot read encrypted content, but lost keys or broken recovery procedures can prevent restoration |
These models are not interchangeable. A service can encrypt data at rest without offering provider-blind encryption. Conversely, end-to-end encryption can leave some metadata visible. Proton Drive, for example, states that file contents, filenames and folder names are encrypted before leaving the device, while metadata such as file size remains unencrypted.
Shortlist by workflow
| Option | Automated coverage | Encryption characteristics | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Backblaze Computer Backup | Software mirrors data on the licensed computer, subject to exclusions, and keeps file revision history | Online-backup encryption is documented, with private-key encryption available as an option; this is not automatically the same as end-to-end encryption | People who want managed, automated computer protection | You must verify exclusions, revision behavior and the current key model before relying on it for sensitive data |
| Proton Drive | Automatic mobile photo backup, Windows folder sync and earlier-version history | Contents, filenames and folder names are encrypted on the device before upload; some metadata, including file size, remains unencrypted | Private file storage, folder sync and phone-photo protection | The documented features do not establish a whole-computer image backup |
| Backblaze B2 with a backup client | Object storage destination; a separate client handles selection, scheduling, encryption and restore | Server-side encryption is available; SSE-C lets you supply an AES-256 key for individual objects | Technical users building a configurable off-site workflow | No bundled client software, so retention, credentials and restore testing are yours to design |
| Cloud storage with Cryptomator | Depends on the separate cloud-sync or backup program you use | Cryptomator provides client-side encryption for compatible cloud storage | Users who need an encryption layer over an existing storage workflow | Cryptomator is not a scheduler or backup engine, and working-file copies require care |
This is a capability comparison, not a laboratory ranking. The available documentation does not establish comparable throughput, restore times, reliability scores, prices, storage limits or retention periods.

Backblaze Computer Backup: the low-maintenance computer option
What it does
Backblaze describes Computer Backup as software that mirrors the data on the licensed computer, subject to its exclusions. It also keeps file revision history, allowing you to retrieve earlier versions rather than only the latest synchronized copy. That combination makes it the most direct fit for a reader asking for automated protection of a computer without assembling several tools.
Encryption questions to answer first
Its documentation distinguishes ordinary online-backup encryption from an optional private-key configuration. Do not present that option as automatically equivalent to an end-to-end encrypted drive. Before enrolling a machine, read the current plan documentation and determine:
- Which files, drives or system locations are excluded.
- Whether the private key is generated or supplied by you and how recovery works.
- What happens if the key is lost, the account is locked or the computer is replaced.
- How revision history and deleted-file recovery work for the data you care about.
Practical setup sequence
- Install the Computer Backup client on the machine that contains the source files.
- Review the client’s exclusion list and add any folders that must be protected if the product permits it.
- Choose the encryption configuration, recording the key-recovery procedure in a separate secure location.
- Let the initial scan and upload complete; large collections can take substantial time and bandwidth.
- Restore several representative files, including an older revision, and open them on a different device before treating the system as proven.
A managed client reduces setup burden, but it does not remove the need for restore checks. A backup that has never produced a readable restored file is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
Proton Drive: encrypted sync and mobile-photo protection
End-to-end encryption scope
Proton states that file contents, filenames and folder names are end-to-end encrypted before leaving your device. Its documentation also describes OpenPGP-based security and signatures. The same documentation explicitly notes that some metadata, including file size, is not encrypted. Therefore, describe the privacy property precisely: content and named fields receive client-side protection, while the provider can still process certain metadata.
Automatic photo backup on Android
- Install and sign in to the Proton Drive mobile app.
- Enable the automatic photo-backup feature and select the camera folders to include.
- Prefer Wi-Fi for the initial upload and confirm that the app has permission to access photos.
- Leave the app available while the first upload runs; Android power-management behavior can affect speed or background execution.
- Open the web or desktop view and verify that recent photos appear before deleting any local originals.
The first upload of a large library may take a long time. Android system behavior can also throttle or pause background transfers, so check the app’s status rather than assuming every photo has arrived.

Automatic photo backup on iPhone
- Install the Proton Drive app and grant photo-library access.
- Turn on automatic photo backup and select the intended albums or camera-roll source.
- Keep the app open or running in the background while the upload proceeds.
- Do not force-close the app: Proton’s support guidance says force-closing stops the backup process.
- Confirm several recent and older photos in the cloud before removing local copies.
Windows folder sync and version history
Proton documents automatic Windows folder synchronization and access to earlier file versions. These features suit working documents that need private cloud access and rollback. They do not establish a complete whole-computer image backup, so use a separate computer-backup method if operating-system recovery or every local application state matters.

Backblaze B2 plus a backup client: flexible, but you operate it
Understand the architecture
B2 is object storage. Backblaze says it does not include client software. Integrations include tools such as Duplicati, and rclone documents B2 as a backend with version behavior. In this design, the storage service holds objects while another program performs the backup job.
Responsibilities you must configure
- Selection: define the folders, file types and devices that belong in the backup set.
- Encryption: decide whether the client encrypts files before upload or whether you rely on storage-side encryption.
- Scheduling: set an interval that matches how quickly your files change and how much bandwidth is available.
- Credentials: create narrowly scoped access credentials, protect them from inclusion in the backup and rotate them according to your security policy.
- Retention: define how long previous versions and deleted objects remain available, then verify the client and storage lifecycle settings agree.
- Restoration: document how to obtain credentials, reconstruct the client configuration and decrypt files on a replacement machine.
Server-side encryption and SSE-C
B2 documents server-side encryption for data at rest. It also documents SSE-C for individual objects, where you supply an AES-256 key and Backblaze says it does not store the original key. SSE-C is still different from encrypting files on your own device before they leave it: the storage service receives the key as part of the object operation, while client-side encryption keeps plaintext away from the storage endpoint.
Build and verify the workflow
- Create the B2 storage location and a dedicated application credential with only the permissions the backup client needs.
- Configure Duplicati, rclone or another current client according to that tool’s documentation; do not assume a safe encryption or retention default.
- Enable client-side encryption when provider-blind confidentiality is required, and store recovery material outside the cloud account being backed up.
- Run an initial backup of a small test folder before scheduling the full data set.
- Change, rename and delete test files, then confirm that the resulting versions and deletions match your retention policy.
- Restore to a clean directory or spare machine, decrypt the files and open them with their normal applications.
- Record the exact client version, configuration, credential location and key-recovery steps for an emergency rebuild.
This approach is powerful for technical users, but a green upload status does not prove that a future restore will work. Configuration, credentials, encryption keys and lifecycle rules all have to survive the loss of the original computer.
Cloud storage with Cryptomator: add encryption to an existing workflow
Cryptomator is a client-side encryption component for cloud storage. It can create an encrypted vault whose data is protected before synchronization to a compatible storage service. It does not decide which files to back up, schedule transfers or retain historical versions; those functions come from the surrounding sync or backup program.

When this pattern makes sense
- You already have a storage destination and need client-side confidentiality.
- You can accept configuring and monitoring two separate components.
- You are prepared to preserve the vault’s recovery information independently of the cloud account.
Working-file caveat
Cryptomator’s security guidance warns that other programs can create copies while encrypted files are being edited. Temporary files, exports and application caches may sit outside the vault or be copied into locations your backup rule does not cover. Map the application’s working directories and include them deliberately when the data is important.
Safe operating procedure
- Create the encrypted vault on a local or cloud-synchronized location supported by Cryptomator.
- Store the recovery password or key material in a separate secure system; do not rely on the only copy inside the vault.
- Open and edit files through the mounted vault, then allow synchronization to finish before shutting down.
- Check the destination for completed encrypted objects rather than assuming an open document has synchronized.
- Perform a clean restore to another device and verify that the vault opens and that representative files are readable.
Compare automation and recovery before you choose
Backup scope
Write down the exact source: an entire computer, selected Windows folders, an Android or iPhone photo library, or a manually defined object-storage set. A product that protects only one of these should not be described as protecting all of them.
Run frequency and interruption behavior
Determine whether the client runs continuously, on a schedule, when a device is charging, or only while a mobile app remains active. For iPhone photo backup, force-closing the app stops transfers. For Android, power-management rules can affect background speed. For desktop clients, check whether sleep, removable drives or network changes pause the job.
Versions and deletions
Version history is the difference between recovering a file and merely retrieving its latest state. Confirm that the service or client keeps earlier revisions and that deletions do not immediately erase every copy. The available documentation establishes revision-history features for Backblaze Computer Backup and Proton’s Windows sync, and version behavior for rclone’s B2 backend, but it does not provide one comparable retention period across these options.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Restore granularity
Ask whether you can restore one file, a folder, an earlier revision, an entire computer or only the raw objects. Object storage normally requires the original client and encryption configuration. A phone-photo service may restore images but not application data. A sync service may restore files without recreating an operating system.

Key management is part of the backup
Client-side encryption changes the failure mode: the provider may be unable to read your files, but you may also be unable to read them if the key or recovery password disappears. Keep recovery material in a separate secure location, document who can access it during an emergency and test it periodically.
- Keep at least one recovery copy outside the cloud account that stores the encrypted data.
- Do not place plaintext keys in the folder being backed up.
- Limit object-storage credentials to the required bucket or actions.
- Revoke credentials for retired devices and update clients when their documentation requires it.
- Test recovery after changing a password, rotating a key or replacing a computer.
Add a separate local copy
An encrypted cloud backup protects against device loss, but a second local copy can shorten recovery when the internet is unavailable or a large restore would be slow. The sources reviewed do not validate a particular external-drive model, capacity or interface, so choose hardware that matches your platform and data volume. Keep the local copy disconnected when it is not being updated if ransomware exposure is a concern, and verify that it can actually open restored files.
Troubleshooting common failures
Files are missing from the backup
Check the product’s exclusions, selected folders and operating-system permissions first. For an object-storage workflow, inspect the client’s include and exclude rules rather than the bucket alone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The mobile upload appears stuck
On Android, reconnect to reliable Wi-Fi, review battery and background-data restrictions and allow the app to run. On iPhone, reopen the app and leave it open or in the background; force-closing stops the backup. Large first-time libraries may simply require extended upload time.
A deleted file vanished everywhere
You may be using sync without sufficient version or deletion retention. Inspect the service’s revision history and the client’s lifecycle policy before deleting local originals. For B2, check both the client’s version settings and the bucket’s object-retention rules.
The restored file will not open
Confirm that the restore completed fully, that the correct earlier version was selected and that the required decryption key is available. For Cryptomator or another encrypted client workflow, restore the complete vault structure rather than copying an individual ciphertext file.
You cannot decrypt the archive
Stop deleting or rotating credentials until you locate the recovery material. Reinstall the same client family and version documented for the backup, then restore to a separate directory. If the only key was lost, encrypted data may be unrecoverable.
Quick Recap
A decision checklist
- Choose Backblaze Computer Backup when your priority is automated coverage of a computer with minimal administration, and verify exclusions, revision history and the private-key behavior.
- Choose Proton Drive when end-to-end encrypted file storage, Windows folder sync or automatic Android and iPhone photo backup matches your needs; do not treat the documented features as a whole-computer image.
- Choose B2 plus a client when you can configure encryption, scheduling, credentials, retention and restores yourself and want object-storage flexibility.
- Choose Cryptomator plus compatible storage when you need a client-side encryption layer and are willing to operate a separate backup or sync engine.
- Whichever path you take, perform a test restore, preserve recovery keys separately and maintain another copy for important data.
