For a large- and mid-cap MSCI approach, EEM is the straightforward U.S.-listed example; IEMG extends the MSCI approach to small caps; VWO follows a low-cost FTSE benchmark; and Ireland-domiciled EIMI/EIMU offers UCITS access to MSCI large-, mid- and small-cap stocks. None is universally best. Compare the index, capitalization range, total cost, concentration, replication method, domicile, trading venue and risks together.

What “broad emerging-markets exposure” actually covers
“Emerging markets” is not one universal portfolio. Index providers make different decisions about which countries qualify, how much of each company is available to public investors, and whether smaller companies are included. Two funds can both advertise broad emerging-market exposure while owning materially different securities.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMSCI Emerging Markets: large and mid caps
The standard MSCI Emerging Markets index is generally a large- and mid-cap benchmark. EEM tracks this type of universe. It is broad across countries but does not intentionally include the smallest listed companies. This can make the portfolio easier to trade and more concentrated in the largest firms than an all-cap alternative.

MSCI Emerging Markets Investable Market Index (IMI): large, mid and small caps
MSCI says its Emerging Markets IMI “captures large, mid and small cap representation across Emerging Markets countries.” MSCI designs the IMI to cover approximately 99% of each country’s free-float-adjusted market capitalization. IEMG and the UCITS EIMI/EIMU structure use this broader capitalization approach. Small-cap inclusion adds companies that are absent from a large/mid-cap fund, but it also introduces more securities, potentially wider spreads and greater exposure to less-liquid markets.
FTSE Emerging Markets
VWO follows a FTSE emerging-markets benchmark rather than an MSCI benchmark. FTSE and MSCI can classify countries differently and can apply different rules for free float, company eligibility and rebalancing. A lower fee does not make two benchmarks interchangeable: compare the actual index methodology and the resulting country and sector weights.
Side-by-side comparison of representative ETFs
| Product | Index and capitalization scope | Fee shown in the cited source | Structure and venue | Useful comparison case |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EEM | MSCI Emerging Markets; large and mid cap | 0.72% expense ratio, as reported October 16, 2026 | U.S.-listed ETF on NYSE Arca | Simple MSCI large/mid-cap exposure |
| IEMG | MSCI Emerging Markets IMI; large, mid and small cap | Current issuer fee should be verified; no fee was stated in the supplied figures | U.S.-listed ETF | Broader MSCI capitalization coverage |
| VWO | FTSE Emerging Markets; capitalization rules follow FTSE methodology | 0.06% expense ratio, as of February 27, 2026 | U.S.-listed ETF | Low-cost FTSE alternative |
| EIMI/EIMU | MSCI Emerging Markets IMI; large, mid and small cap | 0.18% total expense ratio in the EIMU factsheet, August/September 2026 | Ireland-domiciled UCITS ETF using physical replication; the cited material does not specify a single trading venue | UCITS implementation of MSCI IMI exposure |
Do not read the table as a ranking. The products differ in index family, share class or domicile, tax treatment and access. A fund with the smallest headline fee can still produce a different result after withholding taxes, bid-ask spreads, trading commissions, securities lending revenue and tracking difference.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fees: expense ratio is only the first cost
The stated annual fee is deducted inside the fund and reduces net asset value. It is useful, but it is not the same as the return gap you will experience. Tracking difference includes the fee plus trading costs, withholding taxes, index rebalances, cash drag, sampling and securities-lending income.
How the examples differ
- EEM’s 0.72% expense ratio was shown on the iShares page on October 16, 2026, alongside net assets of $29.07 billion and average daily volume of 31.51 million shares. Its scale and trading activity can matter to a trader even though its fee is high relative to the other examples.
- VWO’s 0.06% expense ratio was reported by Vanguard as of February 27, 2026. Because that figure is date-specific, check the current prospectus before placing an order.
- EIMU’s factsheet for August/September 2026 lists a 0.18% total expense ratio. UCITS investors should also examine the fund’s ongoing-charge disclosure, transaction costs and the tax treatment of distributions or accumulation.
- IEMG’s current fee was not stated in the cited figures. Obtain the issuer’s latest expense ratio rather than assuming it matches another MSCI IMI fund.
A practical cost calculation
Suppose two funds each hold $10,000. A 0.72% annual expense ratio would represent approximately $72 before compounding and before any other tracking effects; 0.06% would represent approximately $6, and 0.18% approximately $18. Those are illustrations of the percentages, not forecasts of your account’s exact deduction. The dollar impact grows with the balance and the holding period, while a fund’s actual tracking difference can be smaller or larger than the stated fee in a particular year.

Compare the fee with the index you actually want. Paying less for a FTSE index is not automatically cheaper in outcome if it creates unwanted country exposure, a less favorable tax result or a larger tracking gap in your market.
Country and company concentration comes before the word “diversified”
Emerging-markets ETFs spread risk across countries, but the market-cap weighting of the largest markets can still dominate the result. EEM’s country breakdown on October 15, 2026 illustrates the issue:
Recommended Free Tools
| Country | Share of EEM portfolio |
|---|---|
| Taiwan | 29.25% |
| China | 20.39% |
| South Korea | 17.98% |
| India | 11.46% |
Those four markets alone represented roughly four-fifths of EEM on that date. The percentages move with prices, index reviews, listings and free-float changes, so treat them as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent allocation. The MSCI index’s largest constituents included Taiwan Semiconductor, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, showing how a country allocation can also become a large-company and technology exposure.
Why two “broad” funds can have different country weights
- MSCI and FTSE may classify a market differently or apply different investability tests.
- Large/mid-cap and IMI versions include different parts of the company-size spectrum.
- Free-float adjustments exclude shares that are not realistically available to public investors.
- Currency movements and price changes alter weights between scheduled rebalances.
Before choosing a fund, inspect its current country, sector and top-holdings pages. Decide whether the concentration is acceptable alongside your developed-market holdings; an emerging-markets ETF is not automatically diversified away from semiconductor, financial, energy or state-owned-company risk.

| Index market capitalization | $13.95 trillion | Total index capitalization, not the assets of any one ETF |
| 10-year annualized standard deviation | 17.24% | Historical index volatility over the stated period, not a forecast |
| Maximum drawdown | 65.44%, from October 31, 2007 to October 27, 2008 | A historical peak-to-trough loss; the timing and magnitude are not guaranteed to repeat |
Emerging-market funds are generally more sensitive to economic and political conditions than developed-market funds. Additional risks include currency movements, capital controls, restrictions on foreign ownership, differences in accounting and disclosure, settlement or custody failures, lower liquidity, sanctions, sudden changes in regulation and difficulty accessing a market during stress. The value of investments and the income from them can fall as well as rise and are not guaranteed.
Index statistics are not fund returns. An ETF can diverge from its benchmark because of fees, trading costs, withholding taxes, sampling, cash balances and the timing of creation and redemption. Compare a fund’s published performance with its own benchmark and read the period and currency carefully.
Replication method: physical does not mean risk-free
Physical replication means the ETF holds the underlying shares, either all of them or a representative sample. EIMI/EIMU is described as using physical replication. Sampling can reduce the cost of holding thousands of small or difficult-to-access securities, but it may increase tracking difference. A physically replicated fund still faces local-market settlement, custody, liquidity and corporate-action risks.
When reviewing any product, find out whether it uses full replication, optimized sampling or another structure; whether securities lending is permitted; how collateral is handled; and whether the fund can temporarily hold cash or derivatives. These details are in the prospectus and factsheet and can matter more than a few basis points of fee.
Domicile, share class and trading venue
U.S.-listed structures
EEM, IEMG and VWO are U.S.-listed examples. A U.S. listing does not by itself determine your tax bill: your residence, account type, estate-tax rules, dividend treatment and the fund’s legal domicile all matter. Check the current prospectus, tax documents and your local rules before investing.

Ireland-domiciled UCITS
EIMI/EIMU is an Ireland-domiciled UCITS implementation of MSCI EM IMI. UCITS funds are commonly used by investors whose platforms or regulations favor European-domiciled vehicles, but availability, currency listings, distribution policy and tax outcomes differ by country. “EIMI” and “EIMU” can identify different exchange listings or share-class conventions; verify the exact ISIN, accumulating or distributing status, trading currency and exchange on your platform.
Trading mechanics
Compare the primary exchange, local trading hours, typical bid-ask spread, average volume, creation/redemption liquidity and the currency in which you will trade. A quoted price in your home currency does not remove the underlying foreign-currency exposure. Use limit orders when spreads are wide, and avoid assuming that a high fund asset total guarantees a tight spread in every listing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A step-by-step way to choose among broad emerging-markets ETFs
- Define your eligible universe. Confirm whether your broker and jurisdiction allow U.S.-listed ETFs, UCITS ETFs or both. Record the account’s tax rules and any restrictions on foreign-domiciled funds.
- Choose the benchmark family. Decide whether MSCI or FTSE methodology better fits your existing portfolio. Read the index factsheet for country classification, investability screens and rebalancing rules.
- Choose capitalization coverage. Select large/mid only if you deliberately want that scope. Select an IMI fund when small-cap representation and nearer-to-total market coverage are priorities.
- Compare the current total cost. Write down the latest expense ratio or TER, then check historical tracking difference, transaction costs, securities-lending policy and tax leakage where disclosed.
- Inspect concentration. Review country, sector and top-ten holdings. Ask whether Taiwan, China, South Korea, India or a dominant technology exposure would duplicate risks you already own.
- Check implementation. Confirm physical or sampled replication, fund domicile, legal structure, distribution policy, currency share class and the exact exchange listing.
- Evaluate liquidity for your order size. Look at spread and typical volume during the exchange’s regular session. Use a limit order if the spread is material.
- Read the risk and tax documents. Pay particular attention to foreign-ownership limits, currency risk, withholding taxes, capital controls, settlement and securities-lending disclosures.
- Set a monitoring rule. Review the fund after index methodology changes, fee changes, domicile or share-class changes, and large shifts in country concentration—not merely after a short-term performance move.
How the four examples fit different use cases
EEM: MSCI large/mid-cap exposure in a U.S.-listed ETF
EEM is the cleanest example for an investor who specifically wants the standard MSCI Emerging Markets large- and mid-cap universe in a U.S.-listed vehicle. Its scale and trading activity may suit frequent or larger transactions. The trade-off is its comparatively high stated expense ratio and the absence of intentional small-cap coverage. Its country mix must be checked before purchase because “broad” does not mean evenly weighted.
IEMG: MSCI IMI breadth
IEMG is the relevant comparison when the objective is to extend MSCI exposure into small caps. Its current fee was not included in the cited figures, so verify it directly with the issuer. Compare its actual holdings, country weights and tracking record with EEM rather than assuming that adding small caps changes only the number of securities.

VWO: low-cost FTSE implementation
VWO is the example for an investor prioritizing a very low stated fee and accepting FTSE methodology. The important question is not simply whether 0.06% is cheaper, but whether the FTSE country classifications, capitalization coverage and implementation fit the rest of the portfolio. Confirm the current fee and benchmark documents before trading.
Best Value
EIMI/EIMU: UCITS MSCI IMI implementation
EIMI/EIMU provides an Ireland-domiciled UCITS route to MSCI IMI exposure with physical replication. The cited factsheet lists 3,061 holdings and a 1.64% trailing yield for August/September 2026, alongside a 0.18% TER. Treat the yield as a dated trailing measure, not a promised distribution. Verify the exact share class, accumulation or distribution policy, ISIN and exchange listing on your platform.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Picking the lowest fee without checking the benchmark
A cheaper fund can track a different country universe. Put the benchmark name and capitalization scope next to the fee in your comparison notes.
Assuming thousands of holdings eliminate concentration
Market-cap weighting can leave a handful of countries and mega-cap companies driving results. Check current weights before investing and after major index reviews.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Confusing trailing yield with a guaranteed income rate
Yield changes with distributions and price. The 1.64% EIMU figure is a trailing statistic from the cited factsheet period, not a forward promise.
Treating historical drawdown as a maximum possible loss
The 65.44% MSCI drawdown is one historical interval. Future losses can be smaller or larger, and an ETF can trade at a premium or discount to net asset value during stress.
Ignoring currency exposure
Trading an ETF in dollars, euros or another currency does not hedge the currencies of its underlying companies. Decide whether you need a currency-hedged share class and verify whether one exists for the exact fund.
Using a ticker without checking the legal instrument
Similar tickers can refer to different exchanges or share classes. Confirm the fund name, ISIN, domicile, distribution policy, benchmark and total expense ratio before submitting an order.
A decision framework by investor priority
| If your priority is… | Start by comparing… | Questions to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Standard MSCI large/mid exposure | EEM against other MSCI large/mid funds available to you | Is the fee justified by liquidity, spread and implementation? |
| Maximum MSCI market coverage | IEMG and EIMI/EIMU | Do small caps, domicile and tax treatment fit your account? |
| Lowest stated ongoing fee | VWO and comparable low-cost funds | Does FTSE methodology produce the exposure you want, and what is the tracking difference? |
| UCITS access | EIMI/EIMU and other eligible UCITS funds | Which share class, exchange, currency and distribution policy are available locally? |
| Large trade or frequent dealing | Spread, volume and creation/redemption liquidity | Can you execute with a limit order during the primary market session? |
What to verify immediately before buying
- Current expense ratio or TER and the date on which it was published.
- Benchmark name, index version and large/mid versus IMI scope.
- Country, sector and top-holdings weights from the latest portfolio file.
- Fund domicile, UCITS status where relevant, legal share class and ISIN.
- Physical, sampled or synthetic replication and securities-lending terms.
- Accumulating or distributing policy, trailing yield and tax documents.
- Exchange listing, trading currency, bid-ask spread and normal market hours.
- Historical tracking difference and the effect of withholding taxes.
- Your own tolerance for political, currency, liquidity and drawdown risk.
Recheck these items after a fee change, index methodology revision, merger, share-class conversion or material change in country weights. Emerging-market allocations can move substantially even when the fund name stays the same.
