The best eBay alternative depends first on how the buyer will receive the item. For a local handoff, start with Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or OfferUp. For a shipped general item, Mercari is the clearest broad-market option in the United States. Etsy is useful only when a used item qualifies as vintage or otherwise meets Etsy’s creative-goods standards.
Before choosing, compare the complete transaction: listing and selling fees, who pays shipping, packing and label work, payment-release timing, return obligations, and protection limits. Those details can change your real payout more than the headline commission.

Choose local pickup or shipping first
Local and shipped sales are different workflows, not merely different apps. Pickup avoids boxes, dimensional-weight surprises, carrier drop-offs, and tracking disputes, but your buyers must be close enough to meet. Shipping opens the sale to buyers outside your area and creates more work and more rules.

If you are undecided, list locally first when the item is bulky, fragile, inexpensive, or difficult to pack. Consider shipping when the item has buyers beyond your area and its expected price can absorb postage, packaging, and selling fees.

Best local alternatives
Facebook Marketplace: broad local reach with location-dependent delivery
Facebook lets an individual sell through Marketplace, buy-and-sell groups, or a Page. Shipping may be available depending on where the seller lives, so do not assume every account or region has delivery, platform checkout, or the same payment options. Check the selling flow shown for your location before promising shipping to a buyer.
Marketplace is a practical first choice for ordinary household goods, furniture, tools, electronics, children’s items, and other objects that are easy to inspect in person. Buy-and-sell groups can be useful when an item has a focused local audience, but group rules and moderation differ. In every case, write the listing so a buyer can decide without a long message exchange: state the condition, dimensions, age when relevant, included accessories, known defects, price, and pickup area.
Craigslist: a straightforward classified listing
Craigslist remains a classified-style option when you want a simple listing and direct communication. Its US fee table shows for-sale-by-owner postings ranging from $0 to $5, while cars, trucks, motorcycles, and RVs or campers are listed at $5. Craigslist says fees vary by geographic location, and the charge applies to selected categories and areas rather than every post.
A Craigslist posting fee is a one-time charge, not a subscription or a recurring seller membership. Confirm the amount in the local posting flow because category and location rules can change. Use a clear title, a realistic price, several accurate photos, and a description that identifies defects. Because the transaction is arranged directly, agree on the exact meeting location and payment before traveling.

OfferUp: currently local pickup only
OfferUp’s support guidance updated September 22, 2026 says the service supports local, in-person transactions only. Shipping is no longer available. Its transition removed shipping from newly posted items on September 23, 2025 and from most existing listings by October 21, 2025. Older articles that describe OfferUp as a shipped marketplace are therefore out of date.
Use OfferUp when you are prepared to meet the buyer locally. Include the item’s dimensions and weight anyway when they affect whether a buyer can transport it, and state whether the buyer must bring help or a vehicle. Keep the handoff conditional on receiving the agreed payment and completing a basic inspection.
How to make a safe local sale
- Prepare the item. Clean it without hiding damage, test the functions a buyer is likely to check, gather model or serial information when safe to share, and photograph every meaningful flaw.
- Price from the net outcome. Compare nearby listings for similar condition, then allow room for reasonable negotiation. For bulky goods, account for the fact that the buyer is providing transport.
- Write complete terms. State the exact condition, dimensions, included parts, pickup area, acceptable payment method, and whether the price is firm. Avoid claiming a warranty or return option unless you will honor it.
- Screen messages. Keep communication on the platform until the plan is clear. Be cautious of requests for verification codes, overpayment, unusual payment links, or a third party who will collect the item without a convincing explanation.
- Choose a public handoff. A busy public location during daylight is suitable for many small items. For a large item that must leave your home, have another adult present, keep valuables and personal documents out of view, and do not allow a stranger to wander through the property.
- Confirm payment before release. Check your own payment account or cash rather than relying on a screenshot or an email claiming that money is pending. For cash, bring a way to count it and agree in advance on whether you can make change.
- Remove the listing immediately. Delete or mark the item sold on every service where it appears. If you cross-list, keep one inventory note so two buyers cannot arrive for the same item.
Mercari for shipped general goods
Mercari is the most directly documented alternative here for shipping ordinary used goods within the United States. Its fee page says new or updated US listings from January 6, 2025 incur a 10% seller fee calculated on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping. Listings are free. The fee is not a 10% deduction from the shipping amount you personally pay; it is based on the item price and the shipping charge paid by the buyer under Mercari’s stated terms.

Mercari shipping workflow
- Measure and weigh before listing. Include the packed dimensions and weight, not just the bare item. An inaccurate package description can create a postage adjustment or make the listing unattractive to buyers.
- Choose a label method. A Mercari prepaid label can provide tracking and the stated protection up to $200. If you use your own shipping, verify the carrier service, tracking upload process, and any restrictions before accepting an order.
- Pack for the actual trip. Cushion fragile parts, immobilize moving components, seal seams securely, and photograph the packed parcel if the item is valuable or delicate.
- Ship within three days. Mercari’s seller-protection guidance gives three days after the sale to pack and drop off the item. Keep the carrier acceptance receipt until the transaction is complete.
- Wait for the transaction to close. Mercari says funds are released after the buyer rates the transaction. Keep messages, photographs, and tracking information until the balance is available and any issue window has passed.
Items Mercari may not be suitable for
Mercari’s fee page lists package limits and says national shipping is unsupported for motorized items, furniture, bicycles, and major appliances. Check the current item and package rules before creating a listing; a local marketplace may be the better route for anything too large, heavy, motorized, or awkward to ship. Mercari’s page also displays shipping rates with an effective date of October 19, 2026. Because that date is after the October 13, 2026 terms checked for this article, do not treat those future rates as the rates in force on October 13; verify the live quote when you list.

Etsy only for qualifying vintage or creative goods
Etsy is a specialist marketplace, not a general eBay replacement for used belongings. Its Creativity Standards require goods to be made, designed, handpicked, or sourced in the ways Etsy describes. Eligible vintage pieces can fit, but an ordinary used phone, sofa, or unrelated household item does not become an Etsy item merely because it is secondhand.

The $0.20 listing fee is charged even if the item does not sell during its active period. The 6.5% transaction fee includes shipping that you set, while payment-processing rates depend on the country of your bank account. Offsite Ads can add a separate fee when the applicable conditions are met, so do not estimate Etsy’s cost from the transaction percentage alone.
Etsy requires a return policy on each new or edited physical-item listing, even when that policy says no returns. You remain responsible for the policy you publish. Purchase Protection is conditional: Etsy’s help documentation describes eligible cases and distinguishes cases opened before May 7, 2026. Review the current terms for the order’s date and circumstances; coverage is not an automatic promise that Etsy will absorb every refund.

Compare your real payout, not just the commission
Use this checklist for every platform:
- Fee base: Is the percentage charged on the item price, shipping, or both?
- Fixed charges: Include listing, payment-processing, payout, setup, and advertising fees.
- Delivery cost: Separate postage, packaging materials, insurance, and your time from the buyer’s shipping payment.
- Protection: Check dollar limits, required labels, claim deadlines, exclusions, and whether protection is conditional on your packing and tracking.
- Returns: Determine whether the platform imposes a return process or leaves the policy to you.
- Availability: Confirm that the service and its shipping or checkout features operate in your location and category.
A simple payout estimate is: item price minus selling fees, minus any listing or payment charges, minus the shipping and packing costs you pay, minus optional payout fees. Keep buyer-paid shipping separate in the calculation so you do not mistake money collected for postage as profit.

Which alternative fits each type of used item?
Bulky furniture and appliances
Start with local pickup. Furniture and major appliances are specifically among the categories for which Mercari’s national shipping is unsupported, and the cost of safely shipping them can overwhelm the sale price. Provide exact dimensions, stair or elevator information, and whether the buyer must bring help.
Small electronics and accessories
Use a local marketplace when speed and inspection matter, or Mercari when the item is easy to package and has buyers outside your area. Photograph the device powered on, show included cables, erase personal data, and record the serial number privately for your records.
Collectibles, handmade goods, and eligible vintage pieces
Consider Etsy only after confirming that the item meets its Creativity Standards. If it does not, use a general local marketplace or a shipped general-goods service instead of forcing it into a specialist category.

Vehicles and motorized equipment
Check the category rules and local listing costs before posting. Craigslist’s US table lists $5 for cars, trucks, motorcycles, and RVs or campers, while Mercari’s national shipping restrictions make it unsuitable for motorized items. Arrange an inspection and payment method that matches the value, and never release title or ownership documents before confirmed payment.

Cross-listing without creating a double sale
Cross-listing can expose an item to local and shipped buyers, but it creates an inventory-control obligation. Use one record containing the item title, asking price, condition, serial number, and the platforms where it is live. When one buyer commits, pause or remove every other listing before accepting another payment. Do not promise the same item to two people while waiting for a preferred offer.
Cross-list only when you can answer messages, update prices, and remove sold listings promptly. The extra exposure is not useful if an outdated listing causes cancellations, wasted trips, or a dispute over availability.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Relying on outdated OfferUp advice: As of September 22, 2026, OfferUp describes all transactions as local and in-person; do not advertise a shipping option that no longer exists.
- Calling Craigslist free in every case: US owner-sale postings range from free to $5, and the amount depends on category and location.
- Assuming Facebook shipping is universal: Facebook says shipping may be available depending on where you live. Verify the option in your account.
- Underestimating Mercari’s fee base: The 10% fee for new or updated US listings includes the item price plus buyer-paid shipping.
- Missing Mercari’s dispatch deadline: Sellers have three days to pack and drop off a sold item under the stated seller-protection guidance.
- Shipping a restricted item: Check Mercari’s package and category limits before accepting a sale, especially for furniture, bicycles, major appliances, and motorized goods.
- Treating Etsy as a general classifieds site: Confirm that the item qualifies under the Creativity Standards before paying a listing fee.
- Quoting one Etsy percentage: Etsy can combine a listing fee, transaction fee, payment processing, possible setup fee, and possible Offsite Ads charge.
- Assuming protection is automatic: Mercari and Etsy describe protection with eligibility conditions, deadlines, limits, and exclusions. Save packing photos, tracking, and messages.
A practical decision checklist
- Decide whether the item will be picked up or shipped.
- Confirm that the chosen platform supports your location, category, and transaction method.
- Calculate net proceeds using every applicable fee and the costs you will personally pay.
- Check package limits, dispatch deadlines, protection requirements, and return rules.
- Prepare honest photos, measurements, condition notes, and a firm handoff or shipping plan.
- Use a safe payment and meeting arrangement for local sales.
- Remove duplicate listings as soon as the item sells.
For most ordinary local sales, compare Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and OfferUp side by side. For a shippable general item, price the sale with Mercari’s 10% fee and delivery obligations included. Reserve Etsy for qualifying vintage or creative goods, where its specialist rules and layered fees make sense for the item.
