The short answer: Forge first, then fix your biggest gap
Metal Scraps are limited early because they serve several progression and equipment recipes. Treat them as a progression currency rather than ordinary loot. The recommended order is:

- Build the Tier-1 Forge. Its station recipe requires 30 Stone, 10 Metal Scraps, 10 Charcoal, and 12 Wood Logs.
- Craft one core melee weapon through the Blacksmith’s quest: the Scrappy Sword or Spiked Club, whichever fits the way you are already playing.
- Use the armor option for your weakest slot if your weapon is adequate but one piece of protection is holding you back.
- Keep a reserve for tools and survivor recipes, including the Advanced Rake and several apprentice armor pieces.
This order reflects how the early crafting system is gated. The Blacksmith and his workshop open serious weapon and armor crafting, while other rescued craftspeople and their workshops provide additional recipes. Spending every Scrap before the Forge can delay access to the broader equipment tree.
What Metal Scraps are and how they enter your inventory
The Official Enshrouded Wiki classifies Metal Scraps as a level-5 Springlands crafting material. They come from three practical sources:

Because the material is tied to both combat and environmental loot, an efficient early routine combines all three. Clear Scavengers near Rookmore, search the surrounding area for destroyed metal objects and visible pickups, then return to your normal exploration route. The important point is not a guaranteed drop count—none is established—but knowing where to look when you are short by a few pieces for a station or recipe.
Why the Tier-1 Forge is the best first Scrap purchase
It converts 10 Scraps into broader access
The Tier-1 Forge costs 10 Metal Scraps, plus 30 Stone, 10 Charcoal, and 12 Wood Logs. Unlike a single sword or armor piece, the station expands what the rescued Blacksmith can craft. That makes the Forge an account-wide progression step for the character rather than a narrowly useful item.

Build it before optional equipment when you can meet the other material requirements. A weapon crafted first may improve one encounter; the Forge can expose additional weapon and armor recipes and lets later Scrap spending follow your actual build and loot situation.
The Blacksmith is the progression gate
The Forge only matters after the Blacksmith has been rescued and his workshop is available. Recipe access in Enshrouded is tied to rescuing craftspeople and establishing their workshops, so the correct sequence is to complete the Blacksmith-related progression, gather the station materials, and then spend the Scrap on the Forge. Rescuing other craftspeople later can add more recipes, but it does not make an early weapon a substitute for the Blacksmith’s station.
Forge-building checklist
- Rescue the Blacksmith and make his workshop available.
- Collect 30 Stone, 10 Metal Scraps, 10 Charcoal, and 12 Wood Logs.
- Craft and place the Tier-1 Forge.
- Open the Blacksmith’s available recipes and identify whether your current weapon or armor slot is the larger weakness.
- Spend the next Scrap batch only after checking whether a tool or survivor recipe is needed for your immediate objective.
What to craft after the Forge
Choose one core weapon, not both
The Blacksmith’s Forge Weaponry or Armor quest offers the Scrappy Sword, the Spiked Club, or any armor piece. If your current equipment leaves you unable to deal with nearby threats, choose one of the two weapons that matches your preferred melee style and current skill investment. The available evidence does not establish a universal damage ranking between the sword and club, so crafting both immediately is an inefficient use of a material that also supports stations, tools, and armor.

Use the item that removes a present bottleneck. A player who is surviving fights but taking excessive damage may gain more from armor; a player whose protection is acceptable but whose weapon is lagging may gain more from a single melee craft.

Do not treat the quest reward as a mandatory weapon choice
The quest’s inclusion of both weapons does not mean one is objectively correct for every character. The right comparison is practical: which option fits your current play pattern, which item is missing from your inventory, and which choice leaves enough Scrap for the next progression step. If exploration already supplied a usable sword, crafting the Spiked Club—or an armor piece—may provide more value. If you have a serviceable club but no dependable sword, the reverse can be true.
When an armor piece is a better purchase
The Blacksmith quest allows any armor piece, so armor is not a consolation prize. It is the correct Scrap spend when one slot is clearly weaker than the rest of your equipment.
Find the limiting slot
Inspect your equipped set and identify the piece that most limits survivability. This is a decision about your actual inventory, not a fixed best-in-slot list. Replace the slot that is consistently behind the others or is making exploration and combat harder. Do not automatically craft a chest piece simply because it sounds more important; the quest does not establish a universal priority between slots.
Check exploration loot before crafting
Early chest and world loot can fill armor gaps. If you have recently found a suitable piece, spending Scraps on a duplicate delays the Forge’s other uses and the tool or survivor recipes that may be next. Compare the piece you would craft with what you already own, then spend only when the upgrade addresses a real weakness.

Set completion is less valuable than fixing the slot that affects your current play. One meaningful replacement is preferable to several optional pieces while your inventory is still changing through exploration. Once your equipment stabilizes, you can reassess the next Scrap recipe with better information.
Where to farm Metal Scraps early
Start with Scavengers around Rookmore
Scavengers near Rookmore are the clearest early source identified for Metal Scraps. If you need enough material for the Forge or a Blacksmith craft, make the area part of your route rather than waiting for random pickups. Defeat the Scavengers you encounter, collect their drops, and search nearby metal debris before leaving.

Break metal objects during normal exploration
Destroyed metal objects can contain Scraps, and world pickups can appear independently of enemy drops. Search ruins, paths, and other explored spaces for visible metal interactables. This approach is slower to describe as a dedicated farm, but it prevents you from overlooking free material while traveling to objectives.
Use a repeatable loop without assuming a fixed yield
A sensible loop is Rookmore-area Scavengers, nearby destroyed metal objects, visible world pickups, then your next quest objective. Repeat it when you are short on the Forge cost or a Blacksmith recipe. The available information does not establish a guaranteed number of Scraps per run or a respawn schedule, so plan around the material you actually collect rather than a promised rate.
Farm for a purpose
Set a target before leaving: first the 10 Scrap requirement for the Forge, then the amount needed for your chosen Blacksmith craft, while retaining a buffer for the Advanced Rake and apprentice armor recipes. A purpose-driven route prevents the common mistake of spending every new Scrap as soon as it appears.
Reserve planning: the opportunity cost of every Scrap
Metal Scraps are not exclusively weapon materials. The same material appears in tool and survivor recipes, including the Advanced Rake and several apprentice armor pieces. That means a weapon that feels attractive now can postpone a tool or settlement-related craft you need next.
- Before the Forge: Do not divert the first 10 Scraps unless you have a specific reason to delay broader Blacksmith access.
- After the Forge: Keep enough material for the immediate recipe that supports your current objective, rather than committing to several optional weapons.
- Before crafting armor: Check whether exploration is likely to cover that slot and whether an apprentice armor recipe or Advanced Rake is more urgent.
- After a major unlock: Reopen the Blacksmith and survivor crafting menus. New recipes can change which item has the highest value for your build.
This reserve is not a fixed number because your other materials, loot, and chosen route vary. The principle is fixed: do not turn a flexible progression material into duplicate equipment.
How rescued craftspeople change the decision
The Blacksmith is the key early gate for serious weapon and armor crafting, but he is part of a wider rescue-and-workshop system. Recipe access depends on which craftspeople you have rescued and which workshops are available. If a recipe is missing, first check progression rather than assuming you need a rarer Scrap source.

This also explains why the Forge should precede many optional purchases. Building the station and advancing the Blacksmith can reveal choices that make an early stopgap unnecessary. Rescuing additional craftspeople then broadens the recipe pool further, allowing later Scrap spending to respond to your actual build instead of an early guess.

You have no Forge and enough mixed building materials
Build the Tier-1 Forge. The station costs 10 Metal Scraps, 30 Stone, 10 Charcoal, and 12 Wood Logs. Once it is placed, inspect the Blacksmith’s weapon and armor options. Only then decide whether the Scrappy Sword, Spiked Club, or an armor piece addresses the bigger problem.
Your weapon is weak, but one of the quest weapons matches your build
Craft one matching weapon after the Forge. Do not buy both simply because both are listed. Keep the next Scrap batch available for tools, apprentice armor, or another recipe revealed by your rescued craftspeople.

Take the armor option from the Blacksmith quest. Confirm that exploration has not already supplied a comparable replacement, then craft the weakest slot rather than duplicating a stronger piece. This converts Scrap into survivability without abandoning the broader progression plan.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Spending the first Scraps on an optional item
Problem: You craft a weapon or tool before reaching the Forge requirement and delay Blacksmith access.
Correction: Treat the first 10 Scraps as station material. Gather the other Forge ingredients and build the Tier-1 Forge before optional purchases.
Crafting both the Scrappy Sword and Spiked Club
Problem: You divide a limited resource between two quest options without a demonstrated need for both.
Correction: Select the weapon that matches your current melee preference and skills. Reassess after more loot and recipes become available.
Replacing an armor slot that loot already covers
Problem: You spend Scrap on a duplicate while another slot remains weak.
Correction: Compare the proposed craft with every relevant piece you found while exploring, then target the slot that is actually limiting survivability.
Assuming Rookmore provides a guaranteed yield
Problem: You plan around a fixed number of drops or a guaranteed respawn cycle.

Ignoring the recipe gate
Problem: You search for materials for a recipe that is unavailable because the relevant craftsperson or workshop has not been unlocked.
Correction: Rescue the Blacksmith for core weapon and armor crafting, then continue rescuing craftspeople whose workshops provide the recipes you need.
A decision checklist before every Scrap purchase
- Have I built the Tier-1 Forge, or am I deliberately postponing it for a stated reason?
- Is this item solving a current damage, survivability, tool, or progression problem?
- Does exploration loot already cover the same weapon or armor slot?
- Am I choosing one Blacksmith weapon that fits my build instead of crafting both?
- Will this purchase leave material for the Advanced Rake, apprentice armor, or another immediate survivor recipe?
- Have I rescued the craftsperson and unlocked the workshop needed for the recipe?
If the answer to the first question is no, the Tier-1 Forge is normally the better destination for your Metal Scraps. If the Forge is already built, choose the single item that removes your largest current bottleneck and keep the remainder flexible.
