Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteClear phone calls no longer require buying only a flagship: current recommendations include budget, mid-range, and premium earbuds. The best choice depends on where you take calls, though, and current picks do not prove that call-focused earbuds are historically cheaper than ever. For an overall recommendation, RTINGS and SoundGuys both select Sony WF-1000XM6; for lower-cost options, RTINGS recommends OnePlus Buds 4, CMF Buds Pro 2, and Anker Soundcore P31i for different price tiers.
Which earbuds have the best call quality?
There is no universal winner for every caller or setting. RTINGS and SoundGuys both name the Sony WF-1000XM6 their overall pick in their current guides. RTINGS says its voice pickup is clear in moderately busy settings, but very loud sounds such as passing trains can trigger noise gating and make speech less intelligible. A quiet-room sample therefore cannot tell you how an earbud will perform in traffic or wind.

RTINGS says it has tested more than 370 pairs of earbuds and in-ear headphones; that is the publication’s own stated testing volume, not an independently audited statistic. Its guide includes model-specific assessments and audio samples. See RTINGS’ earbuds for phone calls guide.

What matters most in earbuds for phone calls?
Intelligibility in the conditions where you call
Listen for whether words remain understandable under steady background noise and sudden loud sounds, not just whether the microphone sounds clean in silence. RTINGS notes that a passing train can affect the Sony WF-1000XM6’s voice intelligibility. Tom’s Guide found wind buffeting challenging for the CMF Buds 2A. Those are different conditions, so neither result guarantees performance in every outdoor setting.
Voice quality is not the same as noise cancellation
Active noise cancellation mainly concerns what you hear. SoundGuys reports an average 88% noise reduction for the Sony WF-1000XM6’s ANC, but that figure is about the listener’s noise reduction, not how effectively its outgoing microphone removes noise for the person on the other end. SoundGuys also reports Sony’s claim that its AI noise rejection was trained on 500 million voice samples; that manufacturer figure is not independent proof of call quality.

- Real-Time Adaptive Noise Cancelling: Advanced ANC reduces noise by up to 52 dB. Adaptive technology detects your surroundings and automatically chooses the best noise-cancelling level for you
- Hi-Res Certified Sound with LDAC: Experience stunning, lossless Hi-Fi audio. Powered by LDAC, and Hi-Res Audio, these noise-cancelling earbuds reproduce musical nuances, delivering rich, well-balanced treble and bass.
- Real-Time 100+ AI Translation: Communicate effortlessly in over 100 languages. AI instantly translates speech with high accuracy, keeping conversations smooth and natural.
- 6 AI-Enhanced Mics for Clear Calls: Six microphones work with an AI noise reduction algorithm to separate your voice from background noise. The wind-noise reduction algorithm keeps calls clear even outdoors.
- Ultra-Long Playtime & Fast Charging: Enjoy up to 10 hours of playtime on a single charge (50 hours with the case). Even with ANC on, get 8 hours per charge and 40 hours total. A quick 10-minute charge gives 3.5 hours of listening.
Fit, battery, and switching devices
Call clarity matters little if earbuds shift while you speak or cannot last through your workday. RTINGS flags less secure fit during talking or chewing for the Anker Soundcore P31i. For the OnePlus Buds 4, it notes under-five-hour battery life with ANC on and inconsistent laptop multipoint behavior. Consider whether you regularly switch between a phone and computer as well as how long your calls run.
How to judge microphone tests and samples
Recorded samples help, but testing methods and conditions differ, so rankings from different sites should not be read as one direct comparison. SoundGuys publishes microphone samples across conditions and describes a custom fixture that simulates bone-vibration transmission. Its page says it added the Sony WF-1000XM6 as its overall pick on February 12, 2026. Scarbir describes simulated-office testing with vocal and sudden background noise, plus outdoor calls near wind and a traffic intersection; its guide is limited to models under $100 and reflects a single reviewer’s testing history.

Scarbir’s October 2026 guide says the author has reviewed and ranked more than 541 wireless earbuds under $100. That is the guide author’s stated test count, not a market-wide statistic. Read SoundGuys’ call-focused guide and samples and see Scarbir’s under-$100 guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are call-quality earbuds cheaper than ever?
The current recommendations show that shoppers can consider capable call-focused earbuds below flagship tier, including budget picks from RTINGS and an under-$100 pick from Scarbir. They do not establish that earbuds with the best call quality are cheaper than ever historically: the cited sources do not provide a comparable historical price series or category-wide benchmark. TechRadar describes the market as more affordable and competitive and notes price reductions for the Nothing Ear (a), but that does not prove an all-time low for call-focused earbuds.
