1. Start with the device and account you already use

2. Match the catalog to your must-play list
EA Play is publisher-specific. A replacement can be broader, such as a platform catalog, or equally publisher-focused, such as Ubisoft+. Neither automatically contains the games you leave EA Play to find. Search the live catalog for your exact games, editions and DLC before paying; catalogs rotate and a title can disappear during your billing period.
3. Separate downloads from cloud streaming
Download access installs a catalog game on your console or PC while your membership is active. Streaming avoids a large download but depends on server availability and your connection. PlayStation Plus Premium offers both modes for selected titles; Extra is primarily a download catalog. 4. Check multiplayer separately

5. Understand what happens when access ends
These are access subscriptions, not purchases. When you cancel or a game leaves a catalog, you lose the ability to launch it through the membership unless you buy it separately or rejoin while it is still included. Associated catalog DLC can also become unusable when the base game leaves or the subscription expires.

The US page displayed $16.99 per month or $134.99 for 12 months on October 13, 2026. The annual option costs less than paying that displayed monthly rate for twelve months, but only if you expect to remain subscribed for the year and the price has not changed at renewal.
Why it suits an EA Play switcher
Extra is broader than a publisher-only membership and does not require a Windows launcher. It is a strong fit when your priority is downloading a changing selection of major and independent games directly to PlayStation. It is not a permanent library: titles can leave, and the catalog you see today may differ next month.
Limits to check first
- Search the current Game Catalog for your must-play games before subscribing; “hundreds” is not a promise that any particular EA or non-EA title is included.
- Sony says PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026, so do not assume a steady flow of new PS4 additions.
- Catalog games require an active eligible membership. Buying DLC for a catalog game does not preserve access to the base game after it leaves.
PlayStation Plus Premium: downloads plus selective streaming
What changes from Extra
Premium includes Essential and Extra benefits, then adds the ability to download or stream games from the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, selected game trials and cloud streaming for eligible titles on PS4, PS5 and PC. This is the best option in this comparison if you want to try games without waiting for a full download or play some PlayStation titles on a computer.
Streaming requirements and boundaries
Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. Those figures describe the required connection speed, not a guarantee of image quality or latency; Wi-Fi congestion, distance from the streaming region and household traffic still affect play. Streaming is limited to selected titles, so a game being downloadable in Extra does not necessarily mean it is streamable in Premium.
Catalog and DLC risk
Sony warns that some titles leave the service. When your membership expires, or when the base game is no longer available through the service, associated catalog DLC access is lost. Treat a trial or streamed session as a way to evaluate a game, not as ownership.

Who should pay for Premium?
Choose Premium when streaming, classics or trials are features you will use repeatedly. If you plan to download contemporary catalog games to a PS4 or PS5 and rarely stream, Extra supplies the central benefit at a lower displayed price.

Ubisoft+ Premium: a publisher-focused alternative
What the US plan includes
The US Ubisoft Store page displayed Premium at $15 per month or $179.99 per year on October 13, 2026. It advertised 145+ PC games, new releases on day one, early access when available, monthly rewards, discounts and Xbox play. The catalog count is Ubisoft’s own current claim, not an independent market statistic.
Best use case
Ubisoft+ is sensible when most of your wanted games come from Ubisoft and you value immediate access to that publisher’s releases. It is not a general-purpose substitute with equivalent coverage of EA’s catalog. A player who wants a mixture of publishers may get more use from a platform-wide catalog, even if Ubisoft+ has the stronger selection of one publisher’s games.
Edition and DLC caveat
Ubisoft warns that an included premium or special edition may not contain every premium item or DLC shown for a game. Open the individual game listing and confirm the included edition, expansions and platform before subscribing. If a particular expansion is the reason you are joining, verify it explicitly rather than relying on the edition name.
PC and Xbox account planning
On PC, access is through Ubisoft Connect. Xbox support lets you play on that console ecosystem, but the plan does not turn into a PlayStation catalog. Keep track of which Ubisoft account is linked to your console account so that progress and entitlements attach to the account you intend to keep.
Xbox Game Pass: broader libraries, but EA Play is still inside
Which tiers include EA Play
EA’s support documentation says Xbox Game Pass Ultimate includes EA Play on Xbox and PC, while PC Game Pass includes EA Play on Windows through the EA app. The same documentation says Core and Standard do not include EA Play. This makes Ultimate or PC Game Pass a poor choice if your goal is specifically to stop paying for EA content; they bundle it rather than remove it.
When Game Pass is still the right alternative
Game Pass can be the strongest value for a PC/Xbox household that wants a wider first-party and third-party catalog and does not mind retaining EA Play. Ultimate is the cross-device option in the cited plans. PC Game Pass is the focused choice for Windows players who do not use an Xbox console. Check the live plan page for current games, benefits and price because the cited page did not provide reliable tier prices.

EA app and PC requirements
PC Game Pass’s EA Play benefit runs through the EA app, so you need an EA account, the EA app and the account linking requested during setup. Installing a Game Pass title does not eliminate that launcher requirement for EA games.

EA Play Pro is a different membership available only through the EA app. EA says it is not included with Ultimate or PC Game Pass. It also cannot be transferred to Xbox. If you are comparing subscriptions because you want new EA releases or Pro-level access, do not assume a Game Pass upgrade provides the same entitlement.
Standalone EA Play may still be the cheapest fit
An alternative is not automatically better. The Xbox US EA Play page displayed $5.99 per month on October 13, 2026. That is a US recurring price example subject to tax, promotions and future changes. If you mainly play the EA games already in the service and do not need a larger catalog, paying for a broader subscription can increase your bill without adding games you will actually launch.
EA defines EA Play as “a gaming membership that lets you play some of EA’s best games and gives you exclusive perks and benefits.” The membership remains publisher-focused. Compare its current game list with the exact titles in Extra, Premium, Ubisoft+ or Game Pass instead of comparing brand names alone.

Xbox EA Play to Game Pass Ultimate
EA says an existing Xbox EA Play membership is automatically canceled when you join Ultimate. Remaining time is rounded up and converted to Ultimate time at a 3:1 ratio. For example, three months of remaining Xbox EA Play time become one month of Ultimate time after the applicable rounding. Check the conversion shown on your account before confirming, especially if you recently renewed.

Existing PC EA Play time does not convert when you join Ultimate or PC Game Pass. EA Play Pro time also cannot be transferred to Xbox. If you have prepaid time, calculate whether joining immediately wastes that balance; waiting until the term ends may be simpler.

Moving from a catalog to a purchase
Before canceling, record which games you installed, their save locations and any DLC you bought. A save file may remain on the device, but the game will not launch through the membership after access ends. If you later buy the title, use the same platform account where possible so the save and add-ons can be recognized.
How to choose in five steps
- List your hardware: PS4, PS5, Windows PC, Xbox, or a combination. Eliminate plans that do not support the device where you actually play.
- Write down five must-play games: Include the exact platform, edition and expansions. Search the current service catalog for each one.
- Decide download versus streaming: Choose Premium only if selected-title streaming or trials justify it; downloads are less sensitive to connection quality once installed.
- Add multiplayer costs: On PlayStation, Extra and Premium include online multiplayer. On Xbox, follow EA’s requirement for a Game Pass subscription when online multiplayer is needed with EA Play, and verify the current rule for other catalog games.
- Calculate the time you will stay subscribed: Compare the displayed monthly and annual prices over the number of months you expect to use the service, then include any separate subscription required for multiplayer or another launcher.

Assuming a larger catalog contains a specific game
Catalog counts are broad marketing descriptions. Fix this by searching the live listing for the title, platform and edition before checkout, and note its removal date if one is shown.
Confusing a subscription with ownership

Pick PlayStation Plus Extra for a PS4/PS5 download catalog, and choose Premium only when streaming, classics or trials are central to your use. Pick Ubisoft+ Premium when Ubisoft releases are the reason you subscribe and you have verified the exact editions and DLC you need. Pick Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass when you want a broad PC/Xbox library and accept that EA Play remains bundled. If none of those conditions describes you, standalone EA Play at its current local price may be the more rational choice.
The deciding test is simple: confirm your platform, search the current catalog for your must-play games, price the full recurring setup and read the cancellation and DLC terms. That process prevents an apparent alternative from becoming a more expensive subscription that still does not include the games you wanted.
