EDuke32 is the best default choice for most modern-PC players. It offers the broadest Duke Nukem 3D feature set, including hardware-accelerated OpenGL and classic software rendering, widescreen and modern FOV controls, extensive CON scripting, major mod support, modern audio formats, and builds for Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, and handheld systems.
Choose Raze if you want one GZDoom-backed launcher for several Build-engine games. Choose JFDuke3D if you prefer a comparatively lean, historically important port and do not need EDuke32’s larger scripting and mod ecosystem. All three are engines: you must supply legally obtained Duke Nukem 3D game data separately.

What a Duke Nukem 3D source port actually provides
A source port is a replacement engine built from released game-engine source code. It supplies the executable, renderer, input handling, audio layer, save-game behavior and extension features. It does not normally include the commercial game’s maps, textures, sounds, music or other copyrighted data.

That separation matters during installation. You need a legitimate Duke Nukem 3D release and its data files, then place or select those files for the port. A source-port download by itself is not a free copy of the game.
Required game data
EDukeWiki’s installation guidance says EDuke32 can detect a normal Steam or GOG.com installation. If automatic detection does not find it, copy DUKE3D.GRP and DUKE.RTS from a qualifying release into the location used by EDuke32. JFDuke3D likewise documents that original Duke Nukem 3D data is required. Raze also needs the data for each commercial game you intend to run.
Use files from the edition you legally own rather than downloading an unidentified archive. Different releases can contain different expansions or executable assumptions, so keeping each game’s data in a clearly named folder makes troubleshooting easier.
Why EDuke32 is the default recommendation
Modern rendering without abandoning the original look
EDuke32 supports hardware-accelerated OpenGL renderers while retaining a classic software mode. That gives you two useful choices: a higher-resolution presentation with modern display scaling, or a renderer closer to the original game’s software appearance. You can change the visual style without changing the underlying campaign or map data.
Widescreen resolutions are supported, so a current 16:9 or ultrawide monitor does not have to be forced into a stretched 4:3 image. Modern FOV controls let you set a horizontal view that feels appropriate for your display. If a high-resolution mode looks too different from the 1996 presentation, switching to software rendering or a narrower FOV is a deliberate fidelity choice rather than a compatibility failure.
Controls that fit a current PC
Mouse-look and modern mouse controls are documented features. You can therefore use a conventional keyboard-and-mouse layout instead of the limited control assumptions of the original DOS release. Widescreen and FOV settings are especially useful together: correcting the aspect ratio first and then adjusting FOV avoids treating a distorted image as a sensitivity problem.

The strongest Duke-specific mod foundation
EDuke32 extends the CON scripting system and exposes a large set of mod-focused engine features. That makes it the safest starting point for total conversions, gameplay overhauls, scripted campaigns and projects that target EDuke32-specific behavior. It is also the port most likely to be named by current Duke mod documentation when a project needs modern scripting or renderer features.

Always read a mod’s own readme: a package written for EDuke32 may not run correctly in JFDuke3D or in Raze’s Duke module even when the original map files are identical.
Audio and platform coverage
EDuke32 supports Ogg Vorbis and FLAC audio in addition to legacy formats, allowing music and sound packs to use current lossless or compressed files. The project documents native builds for Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD, as well as support for handheld systems. That breadth is valuable if you move the same game data between a desktop and another supported device.
The EDuke32 project describes itself as “an awesome, free homebrew game engine and source port of the classic PC first person shooter Duke Nukem 3D.” The important practical point is its continuing maintenance and wide feature surface, not a claim of measured superiority in frame rate.
When Raze is the better choice
One launcher for several Build-engine games
Raze is a Build-engine port backed by GZDoom technology. Its purpose is convenience across a family of games rather than an exclusively Duke-centered tool. The project covers Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior, Redneck Rampage and Exhumed/Powerslave, with additional support for NAM and World War II GI.

If your library includes several of those games, Raze avoids maintaining a separate engine and configuration style for each one. You learn one launcher, one general option layout and one set of display habits, then select the appropriate game module and legally obtained data.

What the Duke module combines
The Duke implementation draws from JFDuke, EDuke 2.0 and DukeGDX World Tour extensions, with a limited set of EDuke32 fixes. That blend explains both its usefulness and its boundary: it offers a modernized, consolidated Duke experience, but it is not identical to running the newest EDuke32 codebase.
Raze’s project describes it as a “Build engine port backed by GZDoom tech.” Flathub calls it a “source port for the modern era,” reflecting its focus on current hardware and operating systems. Those descriptions indicate design goals, not a published compatibility benchmark for every mod.
Where Raze can disappoint a Duke specialist
A Duke mod that depends on a particular EDuke32 CON extension, renderer behavior or file-loading convention may need adaptation in Raze. Before moving a large mod collection, check whether the author lists Raze support. For unmodified campaigns and a mixed Build-engine library, the shared launcher is often worth more than exact parity with every EDuke32 extension.
Why you might still choose JFDuke3D
A lean, historically important implementation
JFDuke3D is a comparatively focused port and an important part of the Duke port lineage. EDukeWiki notes that EDuke32 is based on JFDuke3D and contains a large amount of its code, including work associated with JonoF’s Polymost renderer and modern sound and music handling. Running JFDuke3D gives you a useful reference for that earlier branch of the engine.
Documented operating-system range
The repository documents Windows Vista through Windows 10+, Linux and BSD through SDL2, and macOS 10.15 or later. It offers optional OpenGL 2.0 and OpenGL ES 2.0 acceleration. These requirements are modest compared with modern 3D games, but the project does not present the same breadth of scripting and mod extensions as EDuke32.
Who benefits from the leaner choice
JFDuke3D suits a player who wants classic Duke behavior, a smaller option surface or a cross-platform port close to the lineage from which later projects grew. It is also useful when a mod’s documentation explicitly targets JFDuke3D. If you want extensive contemporary mods, high-resolution enhancements and the largest set of convenience controls, start with EDuke32 instead.

Choosing by the feature that matters most
Duke-specific mods, scripting and high-resolution packs
Select EDuke32 unless the mod author names another port. Its expanded CON scripting and extension set are the strongest match for projects that go beyond original maps and weapons. Raze can run many Duke scenarios, but compatibility depends on the subset of extensions implemented by its Duke module. JFDuke3D is the conservative choice for projects written specifically for its behavior.
Visual style
For a modern monitor with widescreen correction, FOV adjustment and hardware acceleration, EDuke32 provides the clearest Duke-focused control. Raze offers GZDoom-derived technology and options across multiple games. JFDuke3D’s optional OpenGL 2.0 or OpenGL ES 2.0 path is appropriate when you want a simpler renderer choice. None of the documentation establishes that one port produces a universally better image; decide whether you value original software rendering, filtered hardware output or a consistent multi-game presentation.
Windows 10 or 11
EDuke32 is the straightforward recommendation for a current Windows desktop because its project documents native Windows support and modern display and input features. JFDuke3D’s documentation reaches Windows 10 and later, while Raze is aimed at current hardware and operating systems. If a particular build has a launcher problem, try another official build rather than replacing game data or downloading a modified executable.
Linux, macOS or BSD
EDuke32 has documented Linux, macOS and FreeBSD support. JFDuke3D documents Linux and BSD through SDL2 and macOS 10.15+. Raze is distributed for current systems through packages such as Flathub. Package availability can vary by distribution and release, so use the package’s architecture and runtime requirements instead of assuming that a Windows configuration file will transfer unchanged.
Several Build-engine games
Raze is the natural fit when Duke is one title in a larger Build-engine collection. EDuke32 is the better tool when Duke Nukem 3D is the main game and your priority is Duke-specific mod support. JFDuke3D is best viewed as a focused alternative, not a unified multi-game library manager.
Installation: a safe path from purchase to first launch
1. Obtain the game legally
- Purchase or otherwise obtain a qualifying PC release of Duke Nukem 3D from an authorized storefront.
- Install that release once so the original data files are present locally.
- Keep the installation directory intact until the source port has successfully located the data.
2. Install EDuke32
- Download the current EDuke32 build for your operating system from the official project distribution.
- Extract or install it in its own folder, separate from the commercial game’s original executable.
- Launch EDuke32 and allow it to search for a normal Steam or GOG.com installation. If it does not detect one, copy
DUKE3D.GRPandDUKE.RTSfrom your qualifying release into the EDuke32 data folder. - Start the original campaign before adding mods. This confirms that the engine can read the data and that keyboard, mouse, audio and display output work.
- Set the desired renderer, resolution, aspect-ratio correction, FOV and mouse behavior, then exit normally so the configuration is saved.
3. Install Raze
- Install a Raze build or a package supplied for your operating system.
- Place each legally obtained game’s data where Raze’s documentation expects it, keeping Duke Nukem 3D data separate from Blood, Shadow Warrior or other titles.
- Select the Duke module and test an unmodified episode first.
- Add one mod at a time and retain its readme, because a package that targets EDuke32 may not support Raze’s implementation.
4. Install JFDuke3D
- Install the SDL2-based build for your operating system.
- Provide the original Duke Nukem 3D data required by the repository documentation.
- Choose the software path or optional OpenGL 2.0/OpenGL ES 2.0 acceleration, then verify the original game before changing renderer settings.
Troubleshooting common failures
“DUKE3D.GRP” or “DUKE.RTS” is missing
The engine is installed, but the commercial data is not in a searchable location. Confirm the spelling and capitalization of both filenames, copy them from the release you own, and restart the port. Do not substitute a similarly named demo or shareware archive unless the port’s documentation explicitly supports it.
The port starts but the screen is stretched
Set the display to a widescreen mode with aspect-ratio correction enabled, then adjust FOV separately. If the result still looks wrong, switch temporarily to the software renderer. This separates a renderer configuration problem from a bad data installation.
A mod loads but crashes or behaves incorrectly
Check the mod’s required port and version before changing settings. EDuke32-specific CON commands may not exist in JFDuke3D or Raze. Remove the mod from the launch configuration, confirm that the original campaign works, then test the mod alone rather than combining several packages.
No sound or music
Verify that the operating system output device is available to the port and that the selected data directory contains the expected audio files. EDuke32’s Ogg Vorbis and FLAC support applies to files supplied by the game or a compatible mod; it does not convert an incompatible package automatically.

There are no published controlled benchmarks in the project material, so avoid assuming that a port is defective because another installation feels different. Compare software and hardware renderers, disable heavy visual effects, and test the original campaign without mods. Record the exact build, operating system and renderer when asking a project maintainer for help.

Install EDuke32 first if your main question is “What should I use for Duke Nukem 3D on a modern PC?” It covers the widest range of displays, controls, platforms and Duke-specific modifications. Add Raze when a shared Build-engine library is more important than perfect EDuke32 extension compatibility. Keep JFDuke3D in mind for a lean installation, a historically aligned setup or a project that explicitly targets it. Whichever engine you select, provide only legally obtained game data and treat renderer and performance preferences as subjective rather than benchmarked facts.
