The right dual charger depends first on the label on your Nikon battery. Nikon’s official options are single-bay units: MH-25a charges EN-EL15 and EN-EL15a, while MH-34 charges EN-EL15b and EN-EL15c. A third-party dual-bay USB-C charger can be more convenient, but buy it only when its current manufacturer documentation explicitly names your battery generation, simultaneous charging behavior and input requirements.

What to buy at a glance

If you need two batteries ready at the same time, a verified dual-bay charger is the most compact solution. However, no cited source establishes a specific third-party model’s current compatibility, reliability, price or stock. Treat every dual-bay listing as unverified until the maker’s own documentation confirms the exact EN-EL15 variant you use.

For the lowest compatibility risk, use Nikon’s official charger for your battery generation. Because both official models have one bay, photographers who need two cells charging concurrently can use two matching Nikon chargers, accepting the extra space and cables.

  • EN-EL15 or EN-EL15a: Nikon MH-25a is the official match.
  • EN-EL15b or EN-EL15c: Nikon MH-34 is the official match.
  • Mixed generations: do not assume one charger handles all four labels. Verify each battery and the camera entry in Nikon’s compatibility table, which was updated on March 13, 2026.
  • USB-C priority: MH-34 accepts Nikon’s EH-8P arrangement, EH-7P, or a third-party USB-C Power Delivery adapter rated at least 27 W (9 V/3 A), subject to Nikon’s warning that not every third-party adapter or cable is guaranteed to work.

Identify the exact EN-EL15 battery before comparing chargers

“EN-EL15” is a family name, not a guarantee that every charger is interchangeable. Read the complete model marking printed on each battery. The suffix determines which official charger Nikon specifies, and it can also determine whether a third-party dual-bay charger is electrically and mechanically suitable.

Nikon’s compatibility table maps chargers to camera and battery combinations. Check the exact camera model as well as the battery suffix, particularly if you own more than one Nikon body or use batteries purchased at different times. A charger that fits physically is not automatically approved for every EN-EL15 generation.

Official single-bay chargers: the dependable baseline

Nikon MH-25a for EN-EL15 and EN-EL15a

The MH-25a is Nikon’s documented charger for EN-EL15 and EN-EL15a batteries. It has one charging position, so it cannot charge two cells simultaneously. Its value is clear compatibility rather than dual-bay convenience. If your batteries carry either of those labels and you want the least ambiguous setup, this is the reference point against which third-party products should be judged.

Nikon MH-34 for EN-EL15b and EN-EL15c

The MH-34 is Nikon’s documented charger for EN-EL15b and EN-EL15c. Nikon explicitly states that it cannot charge EN-EL15 or EN-EL15a. That exclusion is the most important reason not to choose a charger by appearance, connector or the broad “EN-EL15” wording used in a marketplace title.

Two official chargers as a dual-battery workaround

Using two matching official chargers gives you two active bays without asking one unverified accessory to support multiple generations. The trade-off is physical: two units occupy more room, require two power connections and do not provide a single shared battery-level display. For studio or overnight charging, that may matter less than maker-backed compatibility.

Approach Bays charging at once Battery support established by Nikon USB-C considerations Main trade-off
One MH-25a 1 EN-EL15, EN-EL15a Use the power arrangement specified for that charger; USB-C dual-bay claims do not apply. Cannot charge a second battery concurrently.
One MH-34 1 EN-EL15b, EN-EL15c EH-8P with USB-C cable, EH-7P, or USB-C PD rated at least 27 W (9 V/3 A); third-party compatibility is not guaranteed. Cannot charge EN-EL15 or EN-EL15a.
Two matching official chargers 2 Each charger follows its own documented generation Provide the correct power source for each unit. More cables, outlets and packing volume.
Third-party dual-bay USB-C charger Potentially 2, only if the maker says so Not established in the cited material; verify the exact suffix Confirm USB-C input, PD requirements and whether a cable or adapter is included. Compatibility, safety, warranty and availability vary by maker and region.

How to evaluate a third-party dual-bay USB-C charger

A dual-bay product is worthwhile only when it answers the practical questions that a generic listing often leaves out. The following checklist turns “fits EN-EL15” into a testable specification.

1. Exact battery generations

Look for explicit text naming EN-EL15, EN-EL15a, EN-EL15b and/or EN-EL15c. “For Nikon batteries” or “EN-EL15 series” without a suffix is insufficient when your kit contains mixed generations. Save a copy of the maker’s compatibility page or manual in case a listing changes.

2. Simultaneous charging behavior

Some two-slot chargers alternate between bays; others charge both at once but reduce current when two batteries are inserted. Confirm whether “dual bay” means simultaneous charging, sequential charging or merely two physical slots. If the documentation does not state the behavior, treat it as unknown rather than assuming both batteries finish together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Input and included accessories

Check whether the charger accepts USB-C Power Delivery, ordinary USB-C power, or a proprietary input. Confirm the required wattage and voltage, whether a cable is included, and whether an AC adapter is included. A USB-C socket alone does not prove that a high-power PD adapter is required or supported.

4. Per-slot status information

A display can show percentage, charging state or only a few bars. Confirm that the indication is independent for each bay. A single light for the whole charger cannot tell you which battery is nearly full. A Nikon-owner discussion specifically asked for a battery-level display as a bonus; that request demonstrates a useful feature, not proof that any particular model measures capacity accurately.

5. Physical security and portability

For travel, inspect how batteries are retained, whether contacts are recessed, and whether the USB-C plug can be bumped out of the socket. A compact charger that lets a battery move during transit can be less useful than two larger units with secure bays. Look for a lid, firm springs and strain relief around the input connector in the maker’s photographs and manual.

6. Maker-backed support

Verify the model number on the maker’s site and on the package before relying on it for a paid assignment or trip.

MH-34 USB-C power requirements and charging times

For the MH-34, Nikon identifies three power arrangements: an EH-8P adapter used with a USB-C cable, an EH-7P charging adapter, or a third-party USB-C PD adapter rated at least 27 W (9 V/3 A). Nikon also says it does not guarantee that every third-party adapter and cable will work. Choose an adapter that meets the electrical specification, then keep the cable connection secure and inspect it for damage.

Battery in MH-34 Nikon manual estimate with EH-8P How to interpret the figure
Exhausted EN-EL15c About 2 hours 30 minutes Manufacturer estimate, not an independent test; actual time can vary with temperature, battery condition and power delivery.
Exhausted EN-EL15b About 2 hours 50 minutes Manufacturer estimate, not an independent test; actual time can vary with temperature, battery condition and power delivery.

Those times apply to the single-bay MH-34 under Nikon’s stated EH-8P setup. They cannot be used to claim that an untested dual-bay charger will charge two batteries in the same period. A dual-bay design may divide available power, alternate bays or use a different charging profile.

Reading the MH-34 charge indicator

The MH-34 communicates charge state through a repeating flash pattern rather than a numeric percentage:

  • One flash: below 50 percent.
  • Two flashes: about 50 percent.
  • Three flashes: about 80 percent.
  • Steady lamp: charging is complete.

Rapid flashing can indicate that the battery was inserted incorrectly or that the ambient temperature is outside the specified operating range. The MH-34 should be operated between 0 and 40 °C (32 and 104 °F). Move the charger to a suitable environment, remove and reinsert the battery correctly, and check the contacts before concluding that the battery or charger has failed.

Safe charging workflow for a Nikon kit

  1. Inventory every battery. Write down the complete label, including the suffix, and separate batteries by generation.
  2. Check the camera match. Use Nikon’s compatibility table and confirm the camera entry as well as the battery entry.
  3. Select the charger category. Choose MH-25a for EN-EL15/15a, MH-34 for EN-EL15b/15c, or a dual-bay model only after its maker documents your exact labels.
  4. Confirm power. For MH-34, use EH-8P with its USB-C cable, EH-7P, or a USB-C PD adapter meeting at least 27 W (9 V/3 A). Do not assume an unmarked USB-C supply is adequate.
  5. Inspect before insertion. Check for bent contacts, debris, swelling or damaged insulation. Do not charge a visibly damaged or swollen battery.
  6. Insert with the correct orientation. A rapid indicator pattern or failure to start can result from incorrect insertion.
  7. Place the charger in the rated temperature range. Keep it between 0 and 40 °C (32 and 104 °F), on a hard, ventilated surface away from heat and moisture.
  8. Watch each bay. On a dual-bay charger, verify that both slots indicate charging independently. If one bay is idle, consult the manual to determine whether the unit is sequential rather than simultaneous.
  9. Remove finished batteries and label them. Store charged and depleted cells separately so a partially charged battery is not mistaken for a full spare.

Troubleshooting common dual-charger problems

The charger does not recognize a battery

  • Recheck the suffix against the charger’s documented compatibility list.
  • Remove the battery, inspect contacts and reinsert it firmly.
  • Try the battery in the Nikon charger specified for its generation, if available. If it works there, the dual-bay unit’s compatibility claim is the likely issue.
  • Check that the USB-C adapter and cable meet the maker’s input requirement; a connector that fits is not evidence of adequate power.

Only one battery charges

Read the manual for the words “simultaneous,” “alternating” or “priority.” Some products use two slots but charge one cell at a time. If simultaneous charging is essential, do not infer it from the number of bays or from a photograph showing two batteries.

Charging stops or takes much longer than expected

  • Confirm the adapter’s wattage and voltage, especially with MH-34’s 27 W (9 V/3 A) minimum for a third-party USB-C PD adapter.
  • Test with a known-good cable and a cooler environment within 0–40 °C (32–104 °F).
  • Remember that Nikon’s 2-hour-30-minute and 2-hour-50-minute figures are MH-34 estimates using EH-8P, not universal targets for dual-bay products.

The indicator flashes rapidly

With MH-34, rapid flashing can signal incorrect insertion or temperature outside the operating range. Correct the orientation, move the charger to a suitable room, and allow a hot or cold battery to return to a normal temperature before trying again.

Choosing by shooting scenario

Travel with one camera and two batteries

A documented dual-bay USB-C charger can reduce packing volume and let one cable serve the charger and other devices. Choose it only after confirming both battery labels, simultaneous operation and secure retention. Carry a compatible spare cable if the charger depends on a removable lead.

Professional or paid assignments

Use Nikon’s official charger, or carry two official chargers, when an unverified accessory could jeopardize a shoot. The extra space is easier to justify than losing access to both batteries because a generic charger does not support one generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mixed EN-EL15 generations

Separate the batteries and choose a charger that explicitly supports each group. If no single dual-bay product documents both groups, two official chargers are the straightforward solution. Never insert an EN-EL15 or EN-EL15a into MH-34.

Best Value
MH-25a Battery Charger (repl.)
  • The MH-25A is a battery charger designed specifically for recharging Nikon EN-EL15 Lithium-ion batteries

Home or studio charging

Two official single-bay chargers can be left in a dedicated charging area. This arrangement avoids unknown dual-bay firmware, ambiguous indicators and undocumented power sharing, while still charging two cells at once when both units are powered.

Availability, pricing and evidence limits

Retail stock, regional listings and prices change, and the cited material does not establish current inventory or pricing for any dual-bay model. A US-based Nikon-owner discussion shows that photographers actively seek a “good quality, dual bay, USB-C charger,” but forum mentions are anecdotal and do not constitute a controlled test or Nikon approval.

Do not rank a named third-party charger by speed, reliability or safety without current maker documentation and comparable testing. When a listing conflicts with the manual, favor the dated manufacturer manual and contact the maker before charging valuable batteries. Keep the receipt and verify the return policy, because compatibility can vary by revision and region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buyer’s checklist

  • Have you photographed or recorded the full battery label?
  • Does the charger’s own manual name that exact EN-EL15 generation?
  • Does “dual bay” explicitly mean simultaneous charging?
  • Are both slots monitored separately?
  • What USB-C voltage and wattage are required?
  • Is the cable included, and is an AC or PD adapter included?
  • Does the maker state warranty coverage and provide support documentation?
  • Will the batteries stay locked in place during travel?
  • Have you checked Nikon’s camera-and-battery compatibility entry?
  • Is a two-charger official setup safer for your deadline or assignment?

Verdict

There is no universally best dual charger for every Nikon EN-EL15 battery. Match the suffix first: MH-25a is Nikon’s documented choice for EN-EL15 and EN-EL15a, while MH-34 is for EN-EL15b and EN-EL15c and requires the stated USB-C power arrangements. A third-party dual-bay USB-C unit earns consideration only when its current documentation proves exact battery compatibility, simultaneous charging, power requirements, per-slot status and support terms. If any of those details are missing, two matching Nikon single-bay chargers are the more defensible way to charge two batteries at once.
