Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGOG is the clearest choice if your priority is a store-wide DRM-free policy and standalone offline installers. itch.io is an excellent second source for independent games, but its DRM position is decided by each creator rather than guaranteed across the storefront. Whichever store you use, treat a library entry as an entitlement, not as your archive: download the installers or game files, preserve patches and extras, and record the requirements needed to run them later.
What “DRM-free” means for a game you want to keep
Digital rights management (DRM) is a technical restriction that can require a license check, launcher, account, or online service before a game starts. A DRM-free release removes that particular restriction from the game files. It does not change copyright, the purchase licence, or the game’s own technical requirements.

For long-term reinstalling, three separate questions matter:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Can you obtain a complete set of files? A standalone installer or archive is more useful than a client that must fetch the game again.
- Can the files start without the storefront? A game may be DRM-free yet still need an account for multiplayer, cloud saves, leaderboards, or another online service.
- Will the files remain available? A purchase page can change, and a creator or publisher can alter access. A local copy protects against that particular loss of availability.
“DRM-free” therefore is not a promise that a title will run forever on every future computer. Operating-system support, graphics APIs, dependencies, language packs, patches, downloadable content, and online servers still determine whether a preserved copy is usable.

Store comparison: GOG versus itch.io
| Store | What its published policies support | What you should verify for each game |
|---|---|---|
| GOG | Games released on the platform must meet a store-wide DRM-free requirement. GOG says offline-capable single-player features should work without Galaxy authentication, the Galaxy client, or an internet connection. Your account provides offline backup installers. | Online-only modes and services; operating-system support; installer edition; included language, patch, DLC, and bonus content. |
| itch.io | Creators upload files directly, and itch.io says it does not modify those files or impose DRM. Most releases have DRM-free builds, but creators are encouraged—not required—to provide them. Purchases expose download pages. | The actual files supplied; system requirements; account or launcher needs; whether the creator continues to make the project and its downloads available. |
| Other stores or individual titles | A comparable store-wide guarantee is not established here. A particular game can be usable without DRM even when sold through a client-based store, but that does not create a blanket policy for the storefront. | The exact edition’s store page, publisher documentation, launcher requirement, offline behavior, and local-backup options. |
This makes GOG the most straightforward default for a buyer who wants a predictable preservation workflow. itch.io is especially useful for independent and experimental games, provided you inspect the project’s files and terms rather than assuming every upload is DRM-free.
Why GOG is the strongest default for offline ownership of files
A platform-wide DRM requirement
GOG’s developer policy requires games released there to be DRM-free. The company says single-player features that do not inherently depend on an online service should work without Galaxy authentication, without the Galaxy client, and without an internet connection. That is a stronger baseline than checking the DRM status of every title in a mixed-policy storefront.
The qualification is important. Multiplayer, online matchmaking, leaderboards, account-linked services, and other network-dependent features cannot be made offline merely by removing a copy-protection check. A game can launch from a local installer while those features remain unavailable when servers or external accounts are required.
Offline backup installers
GOG support provides offline backup installers through the buyer’s account. These files are intended to be downloaded and retained locally, then used to install supported games without the Galaxy application. Galaxy is optional for installing and playing games that support the offline route; it remains useful for convenience features such as automatic updates, but it is not the foundation of the offline installer process.
What to check before you download
- Confirm that the product page lists your operating system and architecture.
- Check whether the download is a self-contained installer, a collection of installers, or an archive requiring separate steps.
- Record the game version and patch state if the page identifies them.
- Check which languages, DLC packages, manuals, soundtracks, and other extras are included.
- Read the notes for multiplayer, third-party accounts, anti-cheat, or other online services.
Those checks prevent a common mistake: preserving a base installer while assuming it contains a later patch, a language pack, or every DLC item shown in the store listing.

How to make a GOG purchase genuinely reinstallable
- Open your account’s game library. Select the title and choose the offline backup installer or equivalent download option supplied on the game’s page.
- Download every installer component. Some releases divide the game, language files, patches, and extras into separate files. Keep all components together.
- Keep the original filenames. Names often identify the game, version, language, or installer sequence. Renaming them casually can make later troubleshooting harder.
- Save a copy outside the computer you play on. An external hard drive is a practical category for a large installer collection; the required capacity depends on your library and backup plan. A portable SSD or writable optical disc can also suit particular workflows, but no one medium is required.
- Write a small inventory. Record the title, version, operating system, language, DLC, extras, and the date you downloaded each file.
- Test one installation from the archive. Install to a separate folder or another computer, disconnect the network if practical, and confirm that the intended single-player mode launches. Do not delete your only copy until this check succeeds.
A local copy is useful only if you can identify what it contains. Keep patches and bonus downloads with the matching game version, and preserve installation notes for unusual prerequisites.
Why itch.io is valuable—and why it requires title-by-title checking
Creator-controlled downloads
itch.io delivers files uploaded by individual creators. Its creator FAQ says the service does not modify uploaded files or impose DRM, and buyers receive a purchase download page. That direct delivery model works well for small independent games, prototypes, source releases, tools bundled with games, and unusual editions that may not appear in larger storefronts.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
DRM-free is encouraged, not mandatory
itch.io’s quality guidance encourages creators to upload DRM-free builds, but it does not require every project to do so. A project may contain a launcher, a license check, an account requirement, or multiple builds with different restrictions. Read the project description and inspect the actual download names before treating a purchase as independently launchable.
Availability can change
The purchase page can reflect files that a creator updates or replaces. Creators also control project visibility and access. That flexibility is useful for active development, but it means an itch.io library entry should not be mistaken for an immutable archive. Download the files you are entitled to keep while they are available, and retain the version information shown with them.
Using the itch.io app offline
The itch.io app can operate with a remembered account while offline, but that behavior does not prove that every game build is DRM-free or that each game can launch independently of the app. For preservation, keep the project’s downloaded files in your own storage and test the game without relying on the app when the creator’s instructions permit it.

How to preserve an itch.io purchase
- Open the purchase download page in a browser. Save every file offered for the edition, including alternate operating-system builds, patches, manuals, and bonus content that you want to retain.
- Read the creator’s installation notes. Look for launcher steps, runtime dependencies, account sign-in, required folders, or instructions that distinguish a DRM-free build from another download.
- Store the files in a descriptive folder. Include the project name, platform, version, and download date in the folder or an accompanying text file.
- Keep a second copy. Use storage separate from your main PC; the medium and capacity should follow the size of your collection and your backup plan.
- Test the preserved build. Install it from the local copy, then try the offline single-player path. If the project needs an account or service, document that dependency instead of assuming the local files are sufficient.
Because creator access can change, a local copy is particularly important for itch.io purchases you intend to reinstall years later.

A buying checklist for any DRM-free claim
Use this checklist on the exact edition you are considering rather than relying on a store’s general reputation:
- Policy scope: Is DRM prohibited across the store, or does the creator or publisher decide per title?
- Delivery format: Can you download a standalone installer or archive, or is a client the only delivery route?
- Offline launch: Does the documentation say the game starts without the client and an internet connection?
- Online boundaries: Which modes need servers, matchmaking, external accounts, leaderboards, or cloud services?
- Platform fit: Does the build support your Windows version or another operating system you use? Are both 32-bit and 64-bit requirements relevant?
- Version and patches: Is the installer current, and are updates separate downloads you should archive?
- Content coverage: Are language packs, DLC, soundtracks, manuals, and other extras separate files?
- Future access: Can the seller or creator change, hide, or remove the project’s downloads?
- Local test: Have you installed the files from your archive rather than only launching through a storefront client?
Library entitlement versus a local archive
A purchase normally gives you a licence or account entitlement to use the software under the seller’s terms. It does not automatically hand you a permanent, independently maintained copy of every installer, patch, DLC package, or bonus file. DRM-free policies improve practical control over the files, but they do not convert a licence into unrestricted ownership or guarantee perpetual compatibility.
The distinction affects how you plan backups. If the goal is to reinstall after replacing a drive, preserving installers may be enough. If the goal is to play decades later, also preserve patch levels, configuration notes, dependencies, and the information needed to identify which files belong together. Keep your archive for personal use within the licence terms that apply to the purchase.
Online features do not become offline features
DRM and networking solve different problems. Removing DRM can allow a local executable to start without a licence check, while the game’s multiplayer or service-backed systems still need a connection. Expect the following to remain dependent on external systems when the title is designed that way:

When you archive a game, note which features are local and which are service-dependent. That note is more useful than a simple “DRM-free” label because it describes what you can actually do after reinstalling offline.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Storage and verification practices that prevent failed reinstalls
Use two copies for anything you cannot replace
Keep one working archive and one separate backup. An external hard drive is a sensible option for large installers; choose its size from the total data you need to store rather than from a generic capacity recommendation. A portable SSD offers a compact alternative, while optical media fits a narrower archival workflow. The important property is separation from the computer’s internal drive.
Organize by title and version
A practical folder can contain the installer, patches, DLC, extras, a licence or purchase record where permitted, and a plain-text note with operating-system requirements and offline limitations. Use the same naming pattern across your library so that a future reinstall does not depend on memory.
Verify before deleting older files
Install a copy from the archive and launch the mode you care about. If the title has multiple installers, test the complete sequence. For large collections, periodically compare the archive copies and replace a failing storage device before it becomes the only source of a game.
Troubleshooting a failed offline reinstall
The installer refuses to start
- Confirm that you downloaded every part of a split installer and kept the files in one folder.
- Check that the build matches the operating system and architecture listed on the product page.
- Read the original installation notes for required runtimes, permissions, or a specific installation order.
The game launches but asks for a login
Determine whether the prompt belongs to DRM, multiplayer, cloud services, or a third-party account. GOG’s offline policy covers supported offline-capable features, not services that inherently require a network. On itch.io, inspect the creator’s documentation because DRM-free uploads are not mandatory.

A DLC item or language is missing
Check your inventory and archive for separate installers or files. Storefront pages can present a package as one product while delivering its content in multiple downloads. Record which components you installed so you do not mistake an incomplete archive for a broken game.
The purchase page no longer shows an old file
Use the local copy you saved instead of assuming the current page represents the version you bought. This is especially relevant to creator-controlled projects whose files or visibility can change over time.
The game runs, but an online feature does not
That behavior can be expected. Test the local single-player path separately, then document the service dependency. A DRM-free installer does not recreate servers, accounts, or network infrastructure.

Choose GOG when predictability is the priority
Select GOG when you want a published store-wide DRM-free requirement, a documented offline single-player expectation, and account access to offline backup installers. It is the clearest fit for building a conventional archive of commercially released PC games.
Choose itch.io when the creator and project matter most
Select itch.io when you are seeking independent games or creator-distributed releases and are willing to inspect each project. Its direct-upload model can provide unusually flexible files, but the creator decides what is included and whether a DRM-free build exists.
Use another storefront only after checking the exact title
A client-based storefront may sell an individual game that runs without DRM, but an isolated title does not establish a store-wide guarantee. Read the game’s own documentation and confirm how downloads, account recovery, and offline installation work before making it the foundation of an archive.
A practical long-term reinstall workflow
- Buy from a listing whose offline behavior you understand. Save the product description and requirements with your purchase records.
- Download the complete set of files immediately. Include installers, patches, DLC, language packs, manuals, and extras you intend to keep.
- Record dependencies. Note operating-system support, launchers, accounts, online-only modes, and unusual installation steps.
- Create a second local copy. Store it on separate hardware from your primary PC.
- Perform an offline test. Install from the archive and launch the features you expect to use without a connection.
- Maintain the archive. When you deliberately replace an installer with a newer version, keep a note of what changed and retain older files when compatibility may matter.
This workflow turns a storefront purchase into a usable personal backup without claiming more than DRM-free policies actually provide.
