The right choice depends first on your device—computer-connected pen tablet, pen display, iPad, or Android tablet—and then on whether you mainly paint, draw comics, animate, or need vector artwork.
For a free desktop painting start, try Krita. For iPad illustration, compare Procreate with Adobe Fresco. For comics and animation across several device types, evaluate Clip Studio Paint, paying close attention to its edition and platform-specific license. Before installing or paying, confirm that the app supports your exact operating system, tablet driver, stylus, and file workflow.

These are starting points, not universal rankings. A pen display connected to a computer has different software choices from an iPad, even though both may be called a “drawing tablet.”

What kind of drawing tablet do you have?
Compatibility is the first decision because the phrase “drawing tablet” describes several different products.

Computer-connected pen tablet
A screenless pen tablet sends stylus input to a Windows, macOS, or other supported computer. You draw while looking at the monitor. The app must run on the computer, and the tablet must have a compatible driver. Krita is a natural free starting point for this setup because its feature set is designed for desktop painting. Clip Studio Paint is another option when comics, manga, or animation tools matter.
Pen display
A pen display has a built-in screen and also connects to a computer. Software compatibility still follows the computer’s operating system, not merely the display’s size or brand. Install the manufacturer’s current driver, calibrate the pen, and test pressure and buttons in the app before judging the software.
iPad
An iPad runs tablet-native apps rather than the full desktop versions of every art program. Procreate is specifically iPad-oriented. Adobe describes Fresco as a free drawing app with raster, live, and vector brushes. Clip Studio Paint also has iPad plans, but its licensing terms differ from desktop licensing.

Android support is app-specific. Do not infer compatibility from an iPad listing or from a desktop version. Clip Studio Paint’s publisher describes subscription plans that include Android, but you should still verify the current Android version, stylus support, and plan terms before committing.
How to choose the right drawing app
A useful choice comes from four questions: what device you own, what you make, how you will pay, and where your files need to go.

1. Match the operating system and input hardware
Write down the exact tablet model, stylus model, computer or tablet operating system, and whether the device is connected by USB, Bluetooth, or another method. Then check the app’s current store or vendor page. A software feature list cannot guarantee that your particular pressure-sensitive pen, tilt support, shortcut buttons, or display calibration will work.
2. Match the main workflow
- Painting and textured illustration: prioritize brush engines, layers, color management, and a comfortable canvas interface.
- Comics and manga: look for screentones, perspective rulers, panel tools, 3D references, speech balloons, and a materials library.
- Animation: confirm timeline, frame management, audio, onion-skin or equivalent tools, and the export formats you need.
- Vector artwork: verify that the app creates editable vector paths rather than only raster pixels.
- Cross-device work: check file formats, cloud or account synchronization, and whether the same edition is available on each device.
3. Understand cost and licensing
“Free” can mean a fully free application, a free tier with limits, or a free app whose surrounding services have conditions. Krita’s official feature page states, “Krita is, and will always be, free software.” Adobe describes Fresco as “completely free.” Those statements describe the publishers’ offerings, but device requirements and account services can still change.
Clip Studio Paint is different: its publisher describes perpetual licenses for Windows and macOS, while monthly or annual plans cover iPad, iPhone, Android, Windows, and macOS. The price and plan details are volatile and region-dependent, so use the current official terms rather than an old quotation. Procreate is purchased through the iPad ecosystem; check the current store listing for your iPad and region.
4. Plan your file handoff
If you move work between programs, identify the format before you start. Krita documents PSD loading and saving. Adobe says Fresco work can continue in Photoshop or Illustrator on desktop, with Fresco changes syncing automatically in the described workflow. Treat that as Adobe’s stated workflow, not a guarantee for every device, account, or document.
Krita: the strongest free desktop starting point
Krita is the clearest first recommendation when you want free painting software for a graphics tablet or pen display connected to a computer. Its official feature page documents layers, drawing assistants, vector, filter, group, and file layers, full color management, PSD loading and saving, and an animation workspace.

- Move Beyond the Mouse: Huion Inspiroy H640P is a pen tablet that replaces your mouse for more natural, precise control. Freehand draw, take notes, or even play OSU—everything you do with a mouse, you can do better with a pen. The precise tip makes it ideal for detailed photo editing, graphic design, or signing PDF. Meanwhile, the ergonomic pen grip helps you avoid the strain that comes from hours of using a mouse.
Why painters choose it
- Layer-based editing: Keep sketches, line work, color, effects, and references separate so you can revise without repainting the entire image.
- Drawing assistants: Perspective and other guides help with constructed scenes, technical forms, and repeated geometry.
- Color management: Useful when your work must remain consistent across displays or move into another production application.
- PSD support: Loading and saving Photoshop documents can simplify handoff, although complex documents may not translate perfectly between applications.
- Animation workspace: Krita describes layered animation, audio import, and export options, making it a credible way to explore 2D animation without buying software first.
Where Krita may not be the best fit
Krita is a desktop application, so it is not the direct answer for someone who wants an iPad-only workflow. Its interface also offers many professional controls; beginners who want a minimal tablet interface may need time to learn the workspace. If your project depends on a specialized comics production pipeline or a particular mobile platform, compare Clip Studio Paint and the iPad options instead.
Procreate: an iPad-first painting and illustration choice
Procreate is best considered when your drawing tablet is an iPad and your priority is painting or illustration. Creative Bloq’s comparative review recommends it for iPad drawing and painting, emphasizing its brush system and tablet-oriented user interface. That is a reviewer judgment, not an independent laboratory result or a guarantee for every artist.
Strengths for iPad artists
- A touch-oriented canvas and interface designed around direct drawing on the tablet screen.
- A broad brush-focused workflow for sketching, painting, and illustration.
- A straightforward choice when you want to work primarily on one iPad rather than maintain a desktop-and-tablet setup.
Important limitations
Procreate is limited to iPad availability, so it is not a cross-platform default. The review also identifies it as less suited to vector work than alternatives and primarily raster-based. If you need editable vector paths, extensive desktop continuity, or an Android version, choose another app or use a second application for that part of the workflow.
Adobe Fresco: free mixed-media brushes and simple animation
Adobe describes Fresco as a free drawing option with thousands of brushes, including raster, live, and vector brush types. It also documents frame-by-frame animation and a workflow in which sketches can continue in Photoshop or Illustrator on a desktop.
When Fresco makes sense
- You want to experiment with both pixel-based and vector-like brush behavior in one app.
- You draw on a supported tablet and may later continue the document in Adobe desktop software.
- You need simple frame-by-frame animation rather than a specialized animation production environment.
What to verify
Check the current supported devices, sign-in requirements, storage and synchronization behavior, and export options. Adobe’s statement that changes sync automatically describes its intended workflow; it does not remove the need to confirm that your account, device, and document type support that behavior. Fresco’s broad brush selection also does not automatically provide the comics-specific rulers, screentones, or panel tools a manga project may require.

Clip Studio Paint: workflow depth for comics and animation
Clip Studio Paint is the most workflow-oriented option in this group for comics, manga, and illustration projects that may extend into animation. Its publisher describes those uses and maintains a large official materials library. A tablet manufacturer’s guide highlights comics tools such as 3D models, screentones, and perspective rulers.
Choose the edition before you choose the price
Clip Studio Paint is sold under platform-dependent terms. The publisher describes perpetual desktop licenses for Windows and macOS, while monthly and annual plans cover iPad, iPhone, Android, Windows, and macOS. The edition also matters: PRO and EX do not represent the same feature set, so select based on the project requirements rather than the lowest displayed price.
Because plans, prices, trials, and regional availability change, consult the current official licensing page immediately before purchase. Do not assume that a desktop perpetual license transfers to a mobile device, or that every feature is included in every edition.
Why comics artists consider it
- Production aids: Perspective rulers, screentones, panel tools, and 3D references can reduce repetitive setup.
- Materials: The official materials library can provide brushes, patterns, tones, and references for a repeatable style.
- Animation path: The publisher includes animation in its positioning, making it relevant when a comic project may later include motion work.
- Cross-device availability: Plans covering mobile and desktop platforms can help a team or solo artist move between devices, subject to the exact license terms.
Painting, comics, vector art, or animation: a practical decision table
| Primary project | Start with | Reason | Potential mismatch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital painting on a computer | Krita | Free desktop tool with layers, assistants, color management, PSD support, and animation features. | May feel more complex than a minimal tablet app. |
| Illustration on iPad | Procreate | Reviewer-recommended iPad brush workflow and tablet-focused interface. | iPad-only and raster-first; not ideal for vector-dependent work. |
| Free mixed raster/vector experimentation | Adobe Fresco | Adobe documents raster, live, and vector brushes plus simple frame-by-frame animation. | May lack the specialized comics pipeline you need. |
| Manga or comics production | Clip Studio Paint | Publisher and guide describe comics-oriented tools, materials, rulers, screentones, and 3D references. | Edition and license choice can be complicated; current prices are not fixed. |
| 2D animation exploration | Krita or Clip Studio Paint | Both are positioned with animation capabilities, with Krita documenting an animation workspace. | Confirm the exact timeline, audio, export, and edition features for your production scope. |
| Editable vector illustration | Adobe Fresco or another verified vector-capable workflow | Fresco explicitly includes vector brushes. | Procreate’s reviewer-described raster focus may not meet vector-editing requirements. |
Install and test your drawing software in the right order
- Record your environment. Note the exact tablet or iPad model, stylus, computer or tablet operating system, available storage, and whether you need desktop and mobile versions.
- Check the app’s current compatibility page. Confirm operating-system support, minimum version, stylus features, and whether the required edition is available on your device.
- Install the tablet driver first when using a computer. Restart if the driver requests it, then confirm that the pen moves the cursor and that pressure is visible in the driver panel.
- Install the drawing app from its current official source. Avoid assuming that an old installer, store listing, or license key covers a newer platform or edition.
- Create a test document. Use a small canvas and test pen pressure, tilt if available, eraser behavior, shortcut buttons, palm rejection, display calibration, and zoom gestures.
- Test the file route you actually need. Save a native project, export a common image format, and—if you exchange files—open a PSD or another required format before beginning a large illustration.
- Test recovery. Close and reopen the document, verify where autosaves or synced files appear, and confirm that you can restore the file on the second device if your workflow depends on it.
- Only then commit to a paid plan. For Clip Studio Paint in particular, verify platform, edition, billing interval, and whether a perpetual desktop license or subscription matches your intended devices.
Common problems and how to diagnose them
The app installs, but the pen has no pressure
First determine whether pressure works in the tablet driver or system test. If it does not, fix the driver, cable, Bluetooth connection, or operating-system permissions before changing apps. If pressure works outside the app, inspect the app’s selected tablet API, brush settings, and permission prompts. Test with a default pressure-sensitive brush rather than a custom brush whose dynamics may be disabled.

Re-run display calibration in the tablet driver and check which monitor the driver assigns to the pen. A changed monitor arrangement, scaling setting, or display rotation can create an offset that looks like an app failure.

A mobile version does not match the desktop version
Mobile and desktop editions may have different tools, file behavior, and licensing. Confirm the exact edition and platform plan. Do not assume that a desktop perpetual license includes iPad, iPhone, or Android access.
A PSD opens with altered layers or effects
PSD compatibility helps with handoff but does not promise identical rendering of every blend mode, filter, text object, or adjustment. Keep the original native file, flatten a copy only when necessary, and test a representative document before moving an entire project.
Cloud synchronization is not appearing
Confirm that you are signed into the same account, that synchronization is enabled for the document type, and that the device has completed its upload. Adobe’s documented Fresco workflow depends on the relevant account and desktop applications; it should be verified with a small test file before relying on it for a deadline.
Buying a tablet after choosing software
Hardware should follow the software decision, not the other way around. If you already own a pen tablet or display, verify compatibility before replacing it. If you have not purchased one, decide whether you want a screenless tablet attached to a computer, a pen display, or a self-contained iPad or Android tablet. Then check the app, driver, stylus, pressure, tilt, shortcut, and operating-system requirements as one combination.
A more expensive display cannot compensate for an app that lacks the comic tools, vector workflow, or animation export your project requires. Conversely, a free application can be the best value when it supports the device you already own and the files your collaborators use.
Bottom line for each reader
- Choose Krita if you want a capable, free desktop painting application and are comfortable working on a computer-connected tablet or pen display.
- Choose Procreate if you draw primarily on an iPad and want a brush-centered illustration workflow, accepting its iPad-only and raster-first limits.
- Choose Adobe Fresco if you want a free app with raster, live, and vector brushes, plus a stated route into Photoshop or Illustrator and simple frame-by-frame animation.
- Choose Clip Studio Paint if comics, manga, illustration production, or animation tools justify learning a deeper workflow and checking platform-specific licensing.
The most reliable recommendation is the one that passes the compatibility test on your exact hardware and handles the file format and workflow you need. Install a free option where available, make a small test document, and verify the license before building a major project around it.
