The best DOOM (2016) audio mix is not one universal percentage preset. Start with a comfortable Master volume, raise Music until the soundtrack is clearly present during exploration, then adjust SFX so weapons, enemy attacks, pickups, and other gameplay cues remain easy to identify. Keep Voices high enough for mission dialogue and communications. Recheck the balance whenever you switch between speakers and headphones, because the playback device and room change what you hear.
What the four DOOM (2016) audio sliders do
DOOM (2016) separates its mix into four controls. Understanding each one is more useful than copying a percentage from another player, because the same in-game value can sound different through a television, monitor speakers, desktop speakers, or headphones.

| Slider | What it changes | What to listen for |
|---|---|---|
| Master volume | Overall game loudness | Comfortable listening level without clipping, harshness, or fatigue |
| Music volume | The soundtrack | Music remains present during exploration and does not disappear when combat begins |
| SFX volume | Weapons, enemies, pickups, impacts, and other gameplay effects | Combat and navigation cues are distinct enough to locate and react to |
| Voices volume | Spoken dialogue and communications | Mission instructions and character speech remain intelligible over the action |
These controls are the meaningful comparison axes for a personal mix: soundtrack audibility, cue clarity, dialogue intelligibility, comfort at your chosen listening level, and whether your device introduces distortion. No authoritative source publishes a measured ideal ratio or a cross-platform percentage setting that is best for every player, headset, speaker setup, and room.
A reliable starting mix
Use this sequence instead of moving every slider at once. It gives each decision a clear purpose and makes it easier to undo a change that hurts gameplay.

- Set Master first. Raise Master until normal play is comfortably audible at your usual seating position. Stop before the signal sounds strained or listening becomes tiring. Master changes the level of everything, so do this before judging the relative balance.
- Set Music during exploration. Load a section with no immediate firefight and raise Music until you can follow the soundtrack without concentrating on it. The goal is a clearly present score, not the loudest possible music.
- Check SFX in a real encounter. Fight normally and notice whether weapon fire, enemy attacks, pickups, impacts, and movement-related effects are easy to distinguish. If those cues cover the soundtrack more than you want, lower SFX gradually. If an attack or pickup becomes difficult to locate, raise SFX again.
- Set Voices with dialogue playing. Keep Voices high enough to understand mission dialogue and communications while combat or ambient effects continue. Do not judge it only in a quiet menu.
- Play for several minutes before fine-tuning. A mix that sounds balanced in a calm corridor may change during a heavy fight. Make one small adjustment at a time, then test the same type of moment again.
This workflow deliberately treats Music and SFX as a balance rather than a contest. Raising Music alone can make the soundtrack more prominent, but it can also hide an incoming attack or a pickup sound. Lowering SFX too far solves that problem by removing information from the game, so use the smallest change that produces the clarity you want.
How to make the soundtrack louder without losing enemy sounds
Begin with Music, not Master
Master affects every channel. Increasing it to make the score stand out also increases weapons, enemies, voices, and all other effects. Leave Master at a comfortable listening level and use Music for soundtrack presence.
Use combat as the deciding test
Exploration is useful for hearing musical detail, but combat determines whether the mix remains functional. During a firefight, listen for the first sign that the soundtrack is masking an attack, weapon impact, or pickup. Lower SFX only enough to restore the balance. If you later miss positional or warning cues, reverse part of that change.
Protect the cues you actually use
Not every effect needs to be equally prominent. Prioritize sounds that tell you something actionable: an enemy attack, a weapon firing, a pickup being collected, or another event you use to decide what to do next. Keep those cues distinct even if less important background effects become less dominant.

Keep Voices independent
Dialogue can be lost when both Music and SFX are prominent. Set Voices while listening to mission communications, then return to combat to make sure the voice level does not make the overall mix uncomfortable. Voices should be understandable, not necessarily the loudest channel.
A practical tuning procedure for different listening goals
If the soundtrack is your priority
- Set Master for comfortable long-session listening.
- Raise Music until the score remains clearly audible in quiet exploration.
- Test a combat encounter before making Music louder still.
- If weapons and enemy attacks disappear into the mix, lower SFX only as far as needed to restore the soundtrack’s presence while preserving those cues.
If competitive or reactive awareness is your priority
- Set Master at a level where sudden effects are not painful or fatiguing.
- Keep SFX high enough to identify attacks, weapons, pickups, and impacts immediately.
- Reduce Music only if it repeatedly masks those sounds; there is no need to remove the soundtrack entirely.
- Verify the result in a busy encounter rather than in a menu or quiet corridor.
If dialogue is difficult to understand
- Raise Voices while a mission communication is playing.
- Check whether excessive Master volume is causing fatigue; louder is not automatically clearer.
- Retest during combat, because a voice level that works in a quiet scene may still be covered by SFX during action.
- If voices remain unclear after adjustment, compare another playback device before changing every slider again.
If you want a low-fatigue evening mix
- Set Master below the level that makes explosions or weapons feel sharp.
- Keep Music and Voices clearly audible at that lower overall level.
- Use a short combat test, then take a break and reassess; discomfort can come from the playback device or listening level rather than the relative mix.
Official steps when DOOM audio is quiet or missing
Bethesda’s official DOOM PC troubleshooting procedure uses the game’s own audio menu and a full-level diagnostic check. Follow it before assuming that a preferred mix is responsible for a missing signal.
- Open the game menu.
- Select Settings.
- Select Audio.
- During diagnosis, ensure the audio bars are set to 100%, as Bethesda specifies for troubleshooting.
- Play sound and confirm whether a signal is audible.
- If you are using headphones and still hear nothing, try speakers. Bethesda specifically recommends comparing headphones and speakers to determine whether the playback device is the problem.
The 100% instruction is a troubleshooting condition, not a recommended everyday mix. Once you have confirmed that the game produces sound, return the sliders to levels that are comfortable and preserve the cues you need.
Headphones or speakers: which is better for DOOM (2016)?
Neither output type is automatically the best choice for every player. Headphones place the game directly at your ears and can make small effects easier to notice, while speakers interact with the room and your listening position. The practical result is that an identical slider position may not sound identical on the two setups.

Use headphones when
- You need to keep game audio contained to your listening position.
- You can comfortably identify effects without raising the level excessively.
- Your speakers produce a weak, distant, or uneven signal at your seat.
Use speakers when
- Headphones produce no audio, an uncomfortable fit, or an otherwise suspect signal.
- You want to test whether the output device is causing a quiet or missing channel.
- Your room and speaker placement provide a more natural listening level for you.
When changing devices, repeat the tuning sequence rather than assuming the previous balance transfers. Bethesda’s troubleshooting guidance explicitly supports comparing headphones and speakers when diagnosing sound problems.
How to test a setting without fooling yourself
A useful mix must work across the situations in which you actually play. Use the same short test whenever you make a change:
- Listen in exploration and confirm that Music is present without demanding attention.
- Enter a combat encounter and identify weapon fire, enemy attacks, and impacts.
- Collect a pickup and verify that its sound is not buried.
- Listen to mission dialogue or communications and check that Voices remain intelligible.
- Reduce or raise Master only if the entire presentation is too quiet, too loud, distorted, or tiring.
- Write down the slider positions that work for your current device before experimenting further. This gives you a known fallback.
Change one slider at a time. If Music, SFX, and Voices all move together, you will not know which change improved or damaged the result. Recheck after moving to a different room, changing your seating distance, switching output devices, or altering system volume.

Lowering SFX until the game loses information
Symptom: Music dominates, but enemy attacks, weapons, or pickups are difficult to identify. Fix: Raise SFX until those cues are reliably distinct, then make only a small Music adjustment if necessary.
Judging the mix in a quiet menu
Symptom: The settings sound excellent while standing still but fail during a fight. Fix: Use an actual combat encounter for the final SFX decision.
Assuming a percentage from another setup will transfer
Symptom: Someone else’s values sound too quiet, harsh, or unbalanced on your equipment. Fix: Treat published values, if you encounter them, as a starting point only. The available evidence does not establish a universal tested ratio for Music, SFX, and Voices.

Choosing an optional headset
A compatible stereo or gaming headset is the most directly relevant physical accessory for this adjustment problem. The important requirements are straightforward: it must work with your platform, provide a reliable audible signal, and remain comfortable at the level you use for extended play. Avoid choosing on a model name or advertised feature alone; compatibility and retailer details must be verified for your specific platform and connection.
If your current headphones pass the official signal test and let you distinguish Music, SFX, and Voices comfortably, replacing them is not required to obtain a better mix. A different device is useful when the existing one is uncomfortable, produces distortion, or behaves differently from speakers during troubleshooting.
Why the soundtrack deserves a careful mix
DOOM (2016) received the Best Music / Sound Design award at The Game Awards 2016, with Mick Gordon among the soundtrack’s creators. That context explains why many players want the score prominent, but it does not establish a numeric setting. The practical target remains the same: make the music easy to follow while retaining the sounds that communicate danger, action, pickups, and dialogue.

Final recommendation
Set Master for comfort, raise Music until the score is clearly present, and then tune SFX in combat so gameplay cues remain distinct. Set Voices for intelligibility, verify the result on your actual headphones or speakers, and use Bethesda’s Settings > Audio check at 100% only when diagnosing quiet or missing sound. Because no measured universal preset exists, the best DOOM (2016) settings are the ones that preserve both the soundtrack you want to hear and the cues you rely on to play.
