For Apple TV 4K, choose a television and soundbar that support HDMI eARC. Apple says Apple TV 4K sends a high-bandwidth form of Dolby Atmos that does not work over ordinary ARC. Connect Apple TV 4K to the TV, connect the TV’s eARC port to the soundbar, turn on Dolby Atmos in Apple TV settings, and verify that the specific film or show includes an Atmos track. The models below are well-documented options to investigate, not a universal performance ranking: the available evidence contains manufacturer specifications and category guidance, but no comparable listening test or current price check.
What Apple TV 4K needs for Dolby Atmos
Dolby Atmos is not guaranteed merely because a bar has an Atmos logo. The Apple TV 4K, television, soundbar or AV receiver, HDMI connections and the program’s audio track all have to support the same signal path. Apple’s explicit warning is: “Apple TV 4K uses a high bandwidth form of Dolby Atmos that doesn’t work over ARC connections.” Read Apple’s complete setup guidance at Apple Support.

That makes HDMI eARC the safe recommendation for an Apple TV 4K system. ARC and eARC are not interchangeable labels: some compressed Atmos streams can pass through ARC, but Apple’s high-bandwidth Apple TV 4K output requires the greater capacity and format support of eARC. Check the television manual and the labels beside its HDMI sockets before buying. A port marked only “ARC” is not the port to use for this particular setup.

Sonos explains that most Dolby Atmos carried as Dolby Digital Plus can travel over HDMI ARC, while lossless Dolby TrueHD Atmos requires eARC. Sonos also states, “Your Sonos home theater speaker must be connected to HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC to play any Dolby Atmos content.” Those statements describe the general capabilities of Atmos formats and Sonos products; Apple’s separate Apple TV 4K guidance is narrower and more important for this buyer: use eARC rather than relying on ARC. See the format explanation in Sonos Support.

Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
The usual connection layout
- Plug Apple TV 4K into a suitable HDMI input on the television.
- Plug the soundbar’s HDMI eARC/ARC output into the television’s HDMI eARC input. Use the port explicitly labeled eARC, not another HDMI input.
- On the TV, enable eARC (and, where offered, passthrough or bitstream audio) in the sound settings.
- On Apple TV 4K, enable Dolby Atmos under Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format.
- Play a title that actually carries an Atmos soundtrack and look for the Atmos icon in its information panel.
If the soundbar supports Atmos but cannot pass HDR10 or Dolby Vision video, Apple says you may instead connect Apple TV 4K directly to the soundbar and then connect the bar to the TV. That arrangement is an exception to the normal TV-first path and depends on the bar’s video passthrough and the TV’s input capabilities.
Soundbars worth investigating
The following products meet the documented feature and connection requirements to merit consideration. They represent different system designs rather than a tested first-to-last ranking.

Samsung HW-Q990D: full speakers included
Samsung documents the HW-Q990D as an 11.1.4 system that includes the soundbar, a subwoofer and rear speakers. It lists HDMI eARC and HDMI 2.1 passthrough and notes that compatible sources and Dolby Atmos content are required. This configuration can create a more enveloping surround field than a bar-only installation, but it needs room for rear speakers, a subwoofer and power outlets.
The product information cited here is from Samsung Canada. Verify the exact regional model number, included speakers and accessories in your market; bundle contents can vary by region. Samsung’s “wireless Atmos” feature applies to selected 2022 and 2023 Samsung televisions. Do not assume an Apple TV 4K uses that television-specific wireless function: plan on a wired eARC connection unless your own manuals explicitly document another supported path. Product details are on Samsung’s HW-Q990D page.
Sonos Arc Ultra: bar-first, expandable design
Sonos lists Arc Ultra as supporting Dolby Atmos playback in a home-theater setup. Its normal connection is from the bar to the television’s ARC or eARC socket. Because Apple TV 4K’s Atmos signal is specifically described by Apple as high bandwidth and incompatible with ARC, pair Arc Ultra with a television that has eARC and enable that feature.

A bar-first system avoids the placement and wiring of separate rear speakers at the start. If you later add compatible Sonos speakers or a subwoofer, verify the supported products and room layout in Sonos documentation. The relevant Atmos and connection requirements are described in Sonos Support.
Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9: eARC and HDMI 2.1
Sony identifies an eARC HDMI terminal and HDMI 2.1 capability for the BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9. Its support guidance says eARC should be enabled on both the television and speaker system when sending higher-quality formats, including Atmos, from an external device. That is directly relevant when Apple TV 4K is the source.

Confirm the TV’s own HDMI 2.1 and eARC port arrangement: a television can have HDMI 2.1 inputs without putting eARC on every input. The product information and support links are available from Sony UK.
Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar: TV-centered routing
Bose describes the Smart Ultra Soundbar as supporting Dolby Atmos and AirPlay 2. Its stated wiring approach is to connect source devices to the television and then make one connection from the TV to the soundbar. For Apple TV 4K, that single return connection must use the TV’s eARC port if you want the safe high-bandwidth path.
Before purchase, check the television’s audio-output options and eARC behavior rather than assuming every TV passes Atmos identically. Bose’s feature and routing information is on the Smart Ultra Soundbar product page.

How to choose between a bar-only and full surround system
Choose a package with rears and a subwoofer when placement is practical
- A bundled subwoofer handles low-frequency effects without asking the bar’s small drivers to reproduce the deepest bass.
- Rear speakers place surround information behind the listener instead of attempting to reflect or virtualize every channel from the front wall.
- You need floor or shelf space, power for each rear speaker and a layout in which the listening position is not immediately against a wall.
The HW-Q990D is the option in this guide documented as including both rear speakers and a subwoofer. That is a configuration advantage, not a measured claim that it will sound better in every room.
Choose a standalone bar when simplicity and footprint matter
- A single bar is easier to place beneath a TV and avoids rear-speaker cable runs.
- Atmos effects depend more on the room, ceiling, listening position and the bar’s processing than on a discrete rear-speaker package.
- Expansion possibilities differ by ecosystem; check the manufacturer’s current compatibility list before planning upgrades.
Arc Ultra, BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 and Smart Ultra Soundbar are documented here as bar-centered choices. Their suitability depends on your TV’s eARC implementation, room and desired expansion path rather than on a universal ranking.
Check inputs and passthrough before finalizing
Count the HDMI sources you will use: Apple TV 4K, a game console, a disc player and a cable or satellite box may exceed the TV’s available inputs. A bar with HDMI passthrough can provide additional connections, but confirm which HDR formats and refresh rates it passes. Apple specifically notes that a direct Apple TV-to-soundbar connection can be useful when the bar supports Atmos but lacks HDR10 or Dolby Vision video support; otherwise, connect the Apple TV to the TV and return audio through eARC.
Apple TV 4K Dolby Atmos setup, step by step
1. Verify the hardware path
- Confirm that the television has an HDMI eARC socket, not merely ARC.
- Confirm that the soundbar has an eARC-capable HDMI output or input as specified by its manual.
- Use an HDMI cable suitable for the devices’ published bandwidth and connect the labeled eARC ports.
- Check whether the TV requires a setting such as eARC mode, enhanced audio return channel, passthrough or bitstream.
2. Connect Apple TV 4K
- Connect Apple TV 4K to an HDMI input on the TV, unless the soundbar’s documented video passthrough is the better option for your TV and HDR requirements.
- Connect the TV’s eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI eARC/ARC port.
- Set the TV’s audio output to the external soundbar or receiver and enable eARC.
3. Turn on Atmos in tvOS
On Apple TV 4K, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format and check that Dolby Atmos is on. Apple’s setup page at support.apple.com provides the same menu path and additional system notes.
4. Confirm the program’s soundtrack
Open the title’s information panel before playback. Apple says supported content may display an Atmos icon there. The absence of the icon can mean the title, language track or edition does not offer Atmos; it does not automatically indicate a defective soundbar.

5. Confirm the signal at the bar
Use the soundbar’s information display or companion app to see whether it reports Dolby Atmos. If the TV reports a stereo or generic multichannel signal, revisit the TV’s eARC and passthrough settings, then check that Apple TV 4K is connected to the intended HDMI input.

The TV has ARC but no eARC
This is the most consequential limitation for Apple TV 4K. Apple’s high-bandwidth Atmos path does not work over ARC. You can still get sound through an ARC connection in configurations that use supported compressed formats, but you should not expect Apple’s specified Apple TV 4K Atmos path. The practical fix is a TV with eARC or a different source-and-soundbar arrangement explicitly supported by the equipment manuals.
The soundbar is connected to the wrong HDMI socket
Many TVs have several HDMI inputs but only one eARC connector. Move the cable to the port labeled eARC, enable eARC in the TV menu and make sure the bar is on its HDMI eARC/ARC connection. A cable plugged into a regular TV HDMI input cannot carry the return-audio signal.
Atmos is enabled, but the title is not Atmos
Apple TV 4K cannot create an Atmos soundtrack that the service or title does not provide. Check the information panel for the Atmos icon and select the appropriate audio language or version when the app offers multiple tracks.

- Check that the TV’s digital-audio output is not forced to PCM or stereo.
- Enable eARC and passthrough/bitstream where the TV provides those choices.
- Confirm the soundbar is selected as the TV’s audio output.
- Restart the TV, Apple TV 4K and soundbar after changing HDMI settings; some sets renegotiate eARC only after a fresh handshake.
- If Apple TV 4K is connected through the bar, verify that the bar passes the TV’s required HDR format and resolution; otherwise move Apple TV 4K to the TV and use eARC.
There is no sound after enabling eARC
Temporarily disable eARC and test basic TV audio, then re-enable it and inspect each HDMI connection. Confirm that the TV and bar firmware support the selected mode and that the bar’s input is set to TV/eARC. If the problem persists, follow the exact reset and HDMI troubleshooting sequence in the TV and soundbar manuals; menu names vary by manufacturer.

Room, placement and system-fit decisions
Measure before choosing a multi-speaker package
A full 11.1.4 system requires a clear location for each rear speaker and a subwoofer position that does not block a doorway or ventilation. Keep rear speakers roughly beside or behind the seating area according to the manufacturer’s placement guidance, and leave a reliable power source for each wireless unit. Wireless rear speakers still need electrical outlets.
Consider the ceiling and listening position
Atmos virtualization and height effects vary with ceiling height, reflective surfaces and where you sit. A bar-only system may perform differently in an open-plan room than in a compact room with a flat ceiling. Treat manufacturer channel counts as configuration specifications, not guarantees of identical results in every space.
Plan for future expansion
If you expect to add surrounds or a subwoofer later, compare each manufacturer’s supported expansion products and connection limits. Ecosystem compatibility can be more important than a small difference in stated channel count, especially when you already own speakers from one system.

Crutchfield’s 2026 guide, “Best Dolby Atmos sound bars for 2026”, names the Samsung HW-Q990H, Sonos Arc Ultra, Bose Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar and Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 among its category choices and describes eARC as needed for Atmos or other uncompressed formats in its setup context. Those labels are the publisher’s editorial categories, not listening-test results reproduced here. The guide is useful for identifying products to investigate, while the final choice still depends on your TV’s eARC behavior, room and preferred system design.
A practical buying checklist
- TV: one HDMI port explicitly labeled eARC, with passthrough settings that support the formats you use.
- Soundbar: documented Dolby Atmos support and an HDMI eARC/ARC connection; verify whether HDMI passthrough handles your HDR formats.
- Apple TV 4K: connected to the TV or to a compatible passthrough input according to the manuals.
- Settings: Dolby Atmos enabled at Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format; TV eARC and appropriate passthrough enabled.
- Content: the specific title displays an Atmos icon or otherwise documents an Atmos track.
- Room: enough space and outlets for any included subwoofer and rear speakers.
- Region: confirm the exact model number and bundle contents in your country; the cited Samsung specification is from Canada.
- Connections: count every HDMI source and verify that the chosen routing preserves your required video resolution and HDR formats.
Bottom line for Apple TV 4K owners
Start with the TV, not the channel-count headline: Apple TV 4K’s documented high-bandwidth Atmos output calls for an eARC-capable path, and ordinary ARC is not sufficient for that signal. Once eARC is confirmed, choose between a complete surround package such as the documented Samsung HW-Q990D configuration and a bar-first system such as Sonos Arc Ultra, Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 or Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar. Enable Atmos in tvOS and verify the title’s Atmos track before diagnosing the hardware. No model can be declared universally best from manufacturer specifications alone, so let your TV’s ports, room, speaker-placement tolerance and expansion plans decide.
