Choose according to your rendering engine, JavaScript needs, workflow, document size and effective cost. PDFShift is the most straightforward option to evaluate when a published free allowance and size-based credits matter. CloudConvert is a strong candidate when you need Chrome rendering, cloud-storage integrations or chained asynchronous jobs. DocRaptor itself remains a useful baseline for Prince-powered, print-oriented layouts. Test your own templates before switching: the available vendor pages do not establish an independent winner for rendering quality, speed, uptime or security.

What DocRaptor provides
DocRaptor’s documentation says it converts HTML into PDF with the Prince engine. Its feature list includes headers and footers, footnotes and sidenotes, columns, cross-references, page floats, custom page sizes, bookmarks, forms, encryption, font embedding and accessible PDFs. It also documents asynchronous and parallel generation. These are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent performance ranking.
The API accepts HTML in document_content or fetches a document_url. A JSON POST request uses HTTP Basic Authentication, with the API key as the username and a blank password. A normal request returns binary document data; hosted requests can return a public URL, while asynchronous generation returns a status identifier. The documentation reviewed lists pipeline version 10.1, mapped to Prince 15.1 and JavaScript engine 2; check the live API documentation because versions can change.

PDFShift: the free-tier alternative
PDFShift’s pricing page lists up to 50 free credits each month. Billing is based on generated output size: one credit covers 5 MB, so a 14 MB PDF uses three credits. The free plan lists a 15 MB maximum file size and a 30-second timeout. Those figures are from the pricing page accessed in 2026 and should be rechecked before committing.
PDFShift also lists CSS and JavaScript injection, advanced headers and footers, encryption, watermarking, S3 delivery and parallel or asynchronous responses. The important cost distinction is that a document is not automatically one credit; measure your typical output size and include retries in your estimate.
When PDFShift is a good fit
- You want a documented free allowance for development or low-volume production.
- Your PDFs stay below the free plan’s stated size and timeout limits.
- You need hosted controls such as headers, footers, injected CSS or S3 delivery without operating a browser worker.
What to verify
- Whether your JavaScript finishes before the service captures the page.
- How large images and embedded fonts affect the 5 MB credit calculation.
- Current limits, retention, regional processing, rate limits and support terms.
CloudConvert: Chrome, storage and chained jobs
CloudConvert’s HTML-to-PDF API page describes a headless Chrome pipeline with advanced page options. It supports asynchronous processing with webhook completion by default, a synchronous mode, S3, Azure and Google Cloud storage integrations, and chained jobs that can convert formats, add watermarks or create thumbnails.

- Create & Manage PDFs. Create new PDFs, combine multiple files, scan documents, and compress for easy sharing.
- Fill & Sign Forms. Complete forms and digitally sign documents with secure e-signature tools.
The page displays “Starting at $0.008 per file.” Treat that as a displayed starting price, not a quote for every HTML-to-PDF workflow. A chain may involve several operations, and storage, retries and output handling can change the bill. Ask for or calculate the cost using your actual operation graph and document volume.
When CloudConvert is a good fit
- Your source and output files already live in object storage.
- You want a webhook-driven asynchronous pipeline rather than holding an HTTP request open.
- You need post-processing such as watermarking or thumbnail generation in the same job chain.
Chrome is not a guarantee of identical output
Chrome-based rendering can match a web application more closely than a print engine for some CSS and JavaScript, but the cited page does not fully specify waiting behavior or every JavaScript control. Test fonts, network-loaded assets, lazy content, print media styles and page-break rules with your own templates.
API2PDF and vendor comparison pages
API2PDF’s alternatives page is useful for seeing how one vendor models costs, but it is not an independent benchmark. Its example assumes 10,000 PDFs per month, each 0.1 MB and taking two seconds. Do not turn those assumptions into a general throughput or savings claim. Recalculate with your own document sizes, rendering time, retries and storage operations, then confirm current competitor prices.
How to choose an alternative
1. Classify your layout
- Print-first: books, reports, invoices with strict pagination, footnotes, floats or accessible-PDF requirements. Start with DocRaptor’s Prince-oriented feature set, then test alternatives.
- Web-first: pages whose appearance depends on modern browser CSS or client-side scripts. Evaluate CloudConvert’s Chrome pipeline and verify JavaScript completion.
- Simple documents: stable HTML with modest CSS and predictable assets. PDFShift may reduce adoption friction if its limits fit.
2. Decide how content enters the service
Compare inline HTML versus a URL fetch. Inline content avoids exposing an internal URL but requires you to package images, fonts and styles correctly. URL fetching is convenient, yet it introduces authentication, firewall, cookie and external-asset questions. Ask whether the provider supports custom headers, cookies, private storage and deterministic asset versions.

3. Select synchronous or asynchronous delivery
Synchronous calls are convenient for a user waiting on one short document. Asynchronous jobs with webhooks are safer for long reports and batch work: persist the job ID, authenticate webhook requests, make completion handling idempotent and retain a retry path. Confirm whether a failed job is billed and how long output URLs remain valid.
4. Model the real bill
Build a worksheet with monthly documents, average and worst-case PDF size, retries, parallel jobs, storage transfers and post-processing. PDFShift’s size-based credits and CloudConvert’s per-file display illustrate why “one PDF” is not a universal billing unit. API2PDF’s 0.1 MB example may be far smaller than your reports.
5. Test correctness and operations
- Assemble representative templates, including the longest and most image-heavy documents.
- Compare page count, widows and orphans, tables split across pages, fonts, links, bookmarks, metadata and accessibility requirements.
- Exercise authenticated assets, slow APIs, missing images, JavaScript timeouts and malformed HTML.
- Measure end-to-end latency, retry behavior and webhook delivery in your own environment.
- Review current terms for data retention, encryption, processing geography, rate limits, SLA and support before production approval.
Migration checklist
- Keep your HTML and CSS fixture set unchanged while testing each provider.
- Pin fonts and image URLs; do not rely on a developer laptop’s installed fonts.
- Set explicit print CSS, page size, margins, background handling and page-break rules.
- Record provider version or pipeline settings with each release.
- Use checksums or visual regression tests to detect silent layout changes.
- Design idempotent retries so a timeout cannot create duplicate invoices or charges.
- Redact secrets from URLs, logs and webhook payloads.
Common failure modes and fixes
Blank or partially rendered PDF
Usually an inaccessible asset, blocked authentication request or unfinished JavaScript. Inline critical CSS, make assets reachable with the provider’s supported credentials, wait for a known element or completion signal, and capture service logs where available.
Unexpected page breaks
Browser and print engines apply different pagination rules. Add explicit print styles, test break-before, break-after and break-inside, set page dimensions and remove layout assumptions based only on screen width.

Missing fonts or icons
Package web fonts or host them at stable, permitted URLs. Check font licensing and verify that the generated PDF embeds or references the intended faces.
Timeouts on long reports
Reduce unnecessary images, avoid serial external calls, split extremely long jobs where business rules permit, and move to asynchronous processing. Do not simply increase a client timeout without checking the provider’s server-side limit.
Costs higher than expected
Inspect output size, retries and chained operations. A 14 MB PDF consuming three PDFShift credits is a concrete reminder to model size-based billing rather than counting documents.

If your requirement is a clean URL capture or a PDF of a rendered webpage rather than a print-engine document assembled from private HTML, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and offers an MCP server for AI agents.
Its API supports PDF capture with paper size, margins, landscape mode and page ranges, alongside full-page screenshots, CSS-selector element capture, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable caching TTLs, signed links, asynchronous jobs, signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call and a usage API. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status.

FAQ
Can I send a URL instead of HTML?
Yes. DocRaptor documents both document_url and inline document_content. URL fetching requires you to solve access, authentication and asset-availability issues for the renderer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Which option is safest for confidential documents?
No provider can be selected safely from feature pages alone. Review retention, encryption, processing location, access controls and contractual terms, then run a security review for the data in your PDFs.
Should I switch without a visual regression suite?
No. Build fixtures for your real layouts and compare generated PDFs before changing production traffic; engine and pipeline differences can alter pagination even when the source HTML is unchanged.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a free tier mean unlimited testing?
No. PDFShift lists 50 free monthly credits, with one credit covering 5 MB of generated PDF data and a 15 MB free-plan file limit. Your output size determines how quickly the allowance is consumed.
Is CloudConvert’s $0.008 price my final cost?
No. It is the starting price displayed on CloudConvert’s HTML-to-PDF page. Storage, chained operations, volume and retries can change the cost; confirm pricing for your workflow.
Quick Recap
When is ScreenshotNeo preferable to an HTML-to-PDF API?
Use it when you need a rendered website capture or PDF and want consent banners, popups and chat widgets removed without maintaining a browser worker. It is not a substitute for every Prince-style print-layout requirement.
