For most Discord users buying a separate desktop microphone, a USB model is the simplest place to start: connect it to your computer, select it in Discord, and run the built-in mic test. Choose an XLR microphone only if you also want the flexibility of an audio interface or mixer; it is not a requirement for better Discord chat, and Discord documents inconsistent interface input on macOS.
Which microphone connection makes sense for Discord?
USB: the straightforward choice for voice chat
A compatible USB microphone connects directly to a computer, without a separate audio interface. Discord lists USB audio devices among the device types it supports. That makes USB a practical starting point if your priority is joining calls rather than building a more elaborate recording setup. See Discord’s voice connection troubleshooting guidance and its Voice & Video settings instructions.

XLR: consider it for an expanded audio setup
An XLR microphone needs a compatible audio path, such as an audio interface or mixer. That adds equipment and setup steps, so XLR is best treated as an expansion option rather than a Discord necessity. There is also a platform-specific caveat: Discord’s macOS support page describes inconsistent input with audio interfaces and recommends a traditional headset or microphone for the most consistent performance while the issue persists. Check Discord’s current macOS guidance before choosing an interface-based setup, since platform support can change.

RØDE PodMic USB: a USB microphone with an XLR path
RØDE describes the PodMic USB as a dynamic microphone for speech applications. It can connect to a computer over USB or to an analog mixer or audio interface over XLR. The manufacturer also lists onboard DSP, a headphone output with level control, and an internal pop filter and shockmount. Those features may suit someone who wants direct USB connection now and the option to add XLR equipment later; they may be unnecessary for Discord-only use. These are manufacturer-listed features, not independent performance findings. Details are on RØDE’s PodMic USB product page.
Shure MV7+: a close-mic USB option to investigate
Shure describes the MV7+ as a USB dynamic microphone intended for close-mic use. The manufacturer says its cardioid pickup pattern and digital processing are designed to focus on voice and reduce unwanted background noise. Those are design intentions, not a guarantee that it will reject noise in a particular room. Confirm the current connection options and controls on Shure’s MV7+ product page; available information here does not support a direct sound-quality comparison with the PodMic USB.

How to choose for your desk and use
- Connection: Pick USB if you want a direct computer connection. Choose XLR only if the interface or mixer is part of the setup you want, and take Discord’s macOS caveat into account.
- Placement: A desktop microphone works best when you can place it conveniently near you. Consider its distance from your keyboard and other noise sources; performance in any particular room has not been established here.
- Controls and monitoring: Hardware mute, level controls, or headphone monitoring can make everyday use easier. Verify the exact controls on the manufacturer’s current page. RØDE lists headphone output and level control for the PodMic USB.
- Processing: Built-in processing may help shape a voice without a separate software chain, but it does not guarantee compatibility with Discord or a measured improvement in sound.
- Total setup cost: Account for a stand or arm and, for XLR, the required interface or mixer. Current prices were not verified, so check the full setup cost before buying.

Select and test the microphone in Discord
- Open User Settings > Voice & Video in the desktop app or browser, then choose the intended microphone as the input device. Confirm that your operating system has granted Discord microphone access. See Discord’s Voice & Video settings guide.
- Check that the USB or 3.5 mm connection is secure, try another available port if the input is missing, and check for a hardware mute. Discord also recommends checking whether Voice Activity or Push to Talk is selected and confirming appropriate device software or drivers.
- In Voice & Video > Mic Test, choose Let’s Check. Discord plays the recording back through the selected output device, so confirm that output is also set correctly. The mic test is available on desktop and browser; see Discord’s test instructions.
- If Discord does not detect the microphone, recheck the selected input and output, operating-system permissions, connection, and hardware mute. Discord’s troubleshooting guidance also discusses trying another audio subsystem where appropriate.
- If an XLR microphone connected through an interface produces choppy or intermittent input on macOS, consult Discord’s current guidance; it recommends a traditional headset or microphone for the most consistent experience while the interface issue persists.
