Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a practical starting point, test your site on an iPhone running Safari and an Android phone running Chrome. Add an iPad running Safari if tablet traffic or tablet-specific behavior matters. Then refine the device list using your own audience, geography, supported browser versions, and reported problems: there is no single set of phones that is best for every website.
Which phones and tablets should you test your website on?
Choose devices to cover the browsers and form factors your visitors actually use—not to collect a supposedly universal set of the newest models. A small baseline can reveal major platform differences, while analytics and bug reports help you decide where broader coverage is worth the effort.

A practical baseline
- iPhone with Safari: Check the iOS browser path on a model and supported iOS version representative of your visitors.
- Android phone with Chrome: Check Android behavior on a device that reflects your audience when possible. A flagship alone may not represent the Android devices your customers use.
- iPad with Safari: Add a tablet when analytics show meaningful tablet visits or your site has tablet-specific layouts, navigation, or interactions.
These are platform and form-factor categories, not claims that particular current models are universally best. BrowserStack’s device-selection page is one vendor reference, but its displayed device lists can include older models. BrowserStack says it considers operating systems, viewports, manufacturers, launch year, popularity, and country-specific additions; validate its suggestions against your own analytics before buying. Start with first-party analytics: identify the devices, operating systems, browsers, and countries associated with meaningful traffic or conversion paths. Then choose a manageable set that covers distinct risks. Device use varies by audience and geography, so a model popular in one market may be a poor priority in another.

Compare candidates against these criteria
- Audience and geography: Prioritize devices that appear in your customer data and markets you serve.
- Browser and OS versions: Cover the browser families and supported software range your site promises to support. A viewport preset does not test an actual browser version.
- Viewport geometry: Include materially different widths and heights, especially narrow phone layouts and tablet widths. Consider how safe areas, cutouts, and pixel density affect the interface.
- Manufacturer and hardware variation: Android hardware is diverse. Expand coverage where your traffic or a device-specific issue justifies it rather than trying to test every handset.
- Form factor: Add tablets, foldables, or other less common formats when your users or product features make them relevant.
- Cost and frequency: Compare the cost of maintaining a small physical set with the cost and current capabilities of a cloud-device service. Check a vendor’s catalogue, real-device availability, browser versions, and terms directly before choosing.
The W3C’s 2009 Working Group Note on device-independent tests cautions that accounting for every possible device constraint would make device-independent testing impossible. Use that as a reason to choose representative coverage, not as a reason to ignore devices important to your audience. W3C, Guidelines for writing device independent tests
When browser emulation is enough—and when it is not
Use desktop browser emulation to iterate quickly on responsive layout and breakpoint behavior. It is useful for checking how a page fits at different viewport sizes, but it cannot establish how every mobile browser or physical device will behave. Google Chrome for Developers notes that emulators do not reproduce all mobile differences in APIs, CSS support, and behavior. Its page was last updated on 13 April 2015, so treat its specific commercial-service references as dated rather than current recommendations. Chrome for Developers: Emulate and Test Other Browsers

A practical testing sequence
- Iterate on desktop: Use responsive emulation to check layout across the widths your design supports and fix obvious overflow, spacing, and breakpoint issues.
- Validate real mobile browsers: Check important journeys on an iPhone with Safari and an Android phone with Chrome when those platforms serve your audience.
- Add relevant form factors and accessibility paths: Test tablet layouts, assistive technologies, or other device types when your audience and features call for them.
- Expand from evidence: Add devices based on analytics, support reports, and defects that point to a browser, OS, or hardware-specific issue.
Desktop emulation, OS simulators, cloud emulators, and cloud real-device services serve different purposes. Simulators can help with OS integration such as virtual keyboard behavior; cloud emulators can help automate cross-platform checks; real-device testing is useful when reproducing behavior tied to actual hardware or browser implementations. Verify present-day vendor offerings rather than relying on service details in older documentation.
Include mobile accessibility in the device plan
If accessibility is in scope, test with assistive technology on the mobile platforms your visitors use. Screen-reader and other assistive-technology behavior can differ between platforms, so a responsive desktop window alone cannot stand in for every mobile accessibility check. The ICT Accessibility Testing Symposium’s November 2018 methodology describes testing on mobile or tablet devices, devices with assistive technology, responsive desktop windows, and desktop environments; use it as a testing-method reference, not as a source for current OS versions or features. - Turn hidden problems into visible fixes – identify leaks and faults faster, improving uptime, reliability, and efficiency.
- Transform your Android smartphone into an acoustic camera. Detect compressed air leaks and gas leaks anytime, anywhere.
- Find More. Fix Faster. Quickly locate hidden leaks to reduce unplanned downtime and energy waste.
- Put the power of acoustic imaging leak detection in every pocket.
For sites serving people who rely on particular assistive devices or configurations, include those technologies where feasible. Prioritize the combinations supported by your audience and the tasks your site must make accessible.

A screenshot can document a page’s appearance, but it does not replace interacting with the site on a real phone or checking mobile accessibility behavior. For scripted captures, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it can return an image or PDF, but a capture should be treated as visual evidence rather than proof that a mobile browser behaves correctly.
