Best Destiny 2 Raids to Play If You Miss Wrath of the Machine

Start with Deep Stone Crypt. It is the closest overall match for Wrath of the Machine’s machine-focused atmosphere, industrial spaces and Fallen-adjacent science-fiction feeling. Choose King’s Fall for a grand D1-era story and returning threat, or Vault of Glass for the most direct connection to Destiny’s original raid tradition. If what you miss most is tightly assigned jobs and constant callouts, play Vow of the Disciple; if you want the hardest modern coordination test, choose Salvation’s Edge.

Wrath of the Machine was Destiny’s Year 3 raid, released with Rise of Iron in 2016. It is not listed as a current Destiny 2 raid, so the recommendations below match particular parts of its appeal rather than reproducing the raid itself.

What made Wrath of the Machine distinctive?

Wrath of the Machine combined a strong visual identity with encounters that made a six-person team feel like a crew operating dangerous technology. Its industrial machinery, Fallen-linked science-fiction tone and escalating set pieces gave it a different character from the ritual spaces of Hive raids or the abstract geometry of Vex activities. It also occupied a useful middle ground: the raid expected coordination and role discipline, but its objectives were usually legible enough for a group to learn through practice.

That combination matters because “a raid like Wrath” can mean several different things. One player may want the same mechanical atmosphere; another may want a returning Destiny 1 landmark; a third may simply miss raids in which every guardian had a clear responsibility. No single Destiny 2 raid duplicates all of those qualities. The best choice depends on which part you are trying to recover.

How to choose your substitute

What you miss about Wrath Best Destiny 2 choice Why it fits
Machines, technology and Fallen-adjacent science fiction Deep Stone Crypt Closest overall atmospheric match and the strongest technology-centered alternative.
A major D1 story with a familiar historical connection King’s Fall Returns the fight against Oryx in Destiny 2 and delivers large-scale narrative drama.
The original Destiny raid formula Vault of Glass A direct reprise of the raid that established the series for many players.
Assigned jobs, symbols, timing and frequent callouts Vow of the Disciple Communication is central, with denser coordination than a typical nostalgia run.
A demanding modern coordination challenge Salvation’s Edge A current-era difficulty jump for experienced teams, even though its atmosphere differs from Wrath.

The ordering is an editorial fit guide, not an official Bungie ranking. Bungie’s activity information establishes that raids are high-level, mechanics-heavy, six-player activities with exclusive weapon and armor rewards; the similarity judgments here describe how each raid feels to play.

1. Deep Stone Crypt: the closest overall match

Why it feels familiar

Deep Stone Crypt is the first stop for anyone who remembers Wrath primarily as a raid about dangerous machines, industrial scale and Fallen-linked technology. Its identity is built around science-fiction infrastructure rather than a temple, throne world or purely mystical setting. The result is the nearest match for the feeling of moving through a massive, compromised facility while a technologically minded enemy faction turns the environment into a weapon.

How the encounter experience compares

The raid still requires every player to understand a role and communicate when a state changes, but its visual language makes many objectives easier to contextualize than the symbol-heavy mechanics in newer raids. You can teach it by explaining what the team is monitoring, which player handles a task and when the group moves. That makes it a strong choice for a returning D1 player who wants serious mechanics without beginning with the densest possible callout system.

Who should choose it

  • Players who want machinery and technology to be part of the raid’s identity, not merely background decoration.
  • Returning players who remember the industrial energy of Wrath more than a specific boss or story beat.
  • Groups rebuilding their raid roster that want a substantial encounter without starting at the modern difficulty ceiling.

Deep Stone Crypt is therefore the best single answer to “What Destiny 2 raid feels most like Wrath of the Machine?” That is a comparison of mood and play pattern, not a claim that the two raids share encounters or locations.

2. King’s Fall: the best classic-Destiny spectacle

Why it belongs on a Wrath nostalgia list

King’s Fall is the right choice when your memory of Wrath is tied to Destiny 1’s sense of historical scale. Bungie’s returning-player material presents it as a Destiny 2 raid in which guardians take the fight to Oryx, and Bungie’s franchise history places its Destiny 2 return in Year 5. That gives it a direct connection to the earlier game without requiring the new raid to imitate Wrath’s industrial setting.

What the raid emphasizes

Its payoff is monumental rather than mechanical-industrial: the activity feels like a campaign-level confrontation with a known threat. Encounters ask the group to divide responsibilities, maintain timing and survive punishing boss phases. The atmosphere is rooted in Hive ritual and royal menace, so it will not satisfy someone seeking Fallen machinery, but it is excellent for players who want the drama and scale of a classic D1 raid.

Choose King’s Fall if

  • You want a recognizable Destiny 1 story brought forward into Destiny 2.
  • Your favorite part of Wrath was the feeling that the fireteam was confronting a threat larger than a normal strike boss.
  • You are comfortable learning several roles and carrying those responsibilities through multiple encounters.

King’s Fall is a historical and narrative substitute, not an atmospheric one. That distinction helps set expectations before your team commits to a run.

3. Vault of Glass: the most direct foundational callback

Why veterans pick it

Vault of Glass is Bungie’s reprise of the raid that introduced many players to Destiny raiding. It is listed among Destiny 2’s available raids and functions as the clearest bridge to the original raid template: an expedition through Vex architecture in which the group learns an unfamiliar ruleset, protects a shared objective and eventually confronts a defining enemy.

How it differs from Wrath

Vault of Glass is a nostalgia recommendation, not a claim that its enemy faction or setting duplicates Wrath. Its Vex environment is more abstract and its historical importance comes from being first, whereas Wrath’s appeal came from industrial machinery and Fallen-linked science fiction. The overlap is the feeling of revisiting a foundational Destiny activity with a team that may include both veterans and newcomers.

Best use case

Choose it for a reunion run, a returning-player introduction or a group that wants a raid whose identity is easy to explain before the first encounter. It is also a practical way to reconnect with Destiny’s raid vocabulary—relics, timed phases, arena control and synchronized damage—before moving to a denser modern activity.

4. Vow of the Disciple: the communication-heavy option

When communication is what you miss

Some players describe missing Wrath when they really mean missing raids in which every guardian has a job and a missed callout can derail the entire attempt. Vow of the Disciple is the better match for that preference. Bungie lists it among the current raids, and its encounters make communication, symbol recognition, timing and role handoffs central to progress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to expect from a first clear

Your team should agree on names for symbols, locations and states before starting. Callouts need to be short and consistent; two players using different words for the same object can create more confusion than the mechanic itself. New players should learn one role at a time rather than trying to memorize every possible assignment in the opening explanation.

Why it is not the closest visual substitute

Vow’s identity is not industrial or Fallen-focused. It earns its place here through coordination density and the satisfaction of a team operating as a unit. If you remember Wrath for its machinery and atmosphere, start with Deep Stone Crypt instead; if you remember the feeling of a six-person system clicking into place, Vow may be the stronger choice.

5. Salvation’s Edge: the modern difficulty jump

Who should play it

Salvation’s Edge is for experienced raiders who want a demanding modern coordination test. Bungie’s history identifies it as the Year 7 raid, and it appears on the current Destiny 2 raid list. It is not a close aesthetic replacement for Wrath, but it is a compelling destination when the thing you miss is mastering a complicated endgame activity with a practiced team.

How to set expectations

Do not select Salvation’s Edge because you expect a Fallen-industrial mood. Select it because your group is ready to spend time learning layered mechanics, precise positioning and longer progression. A team that has not raided recently will usually have a better experience starting with Deep Stone Crypt, Vault of Glass or King’s Fall, then moving here after rebuilding its communication habits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a veteran roster, however, Salvation’s Edge supplies the sense of occasion and achievement that made a successful Wrath clear memorable. The comparison is about challenge and teamwork, not setting.

Other current raids worth considering

Raid Choose it when you want How it relates to a Wrath-shaped preference
Crota’s End A Destiny 1-era nostalgia run A historical callback for players who want another returning-era experience, without claiming Wrath’s industrial tone.
Last Wish A large, elaborate Dreaming City adventure Best for scale and spectacle rather than Fallen technology or a compact teaching curve.
Garden of Salvation Vex environments and raid puzzles Fits players who prioritize mechanical problem-solving and Vex architecture over D1 nostalgia.
Root of Nightmares A newer raid option Useful when recency and a different visual identity matter more than matching Wrath.
The Desert Perpetual The newest option on the current list Consider it when your priority is current content; its presence and reward details should be checked in-game because the activity lineup changes.

Bungie’s current Activities listing also includes Deep Stone Crypt, Vault of Glass, Vow of the Disciple, King’s Fall and Salvation’s Edge, along with Last Wish, Garden of Salvation, Crota’s End and Root of Nightmares. Availability is subject to change, so verify the live listing before scheduling a group.

What raids require in practice

A six-person fireteam

Bungie defines raids as high-level activities for up to six players. They rely heavily on teamwork rather than allowing one player to solve every mechanic alone. Assemble a real fireteam with enough time for teaching, retries and a final clear; a group that treats a raid like a short matchmaking activity is likely to leave frustrated.

A communication plan

  1. Choose one voice channel. Keep encounter calls in the same channel and ask nonessential conversation to pause during damage phases.
  2. Standardize names. Before an encounter, agree on labels for rooms, lanes, symbols, switches and enemy positions. Use the same labels every pull.
  3. Assign ownership. Give each mechanic to a named player or pair. Everyone should know who is watching the timer, carrying an item, reading a symbol or starting a transition.
  4. Define the wipe call. Decide who can call a reset and what information must be reported after a failed attempt. A useful post-wipe note identifies the mechanic and timing that failed instead of assigning blame.
  5. Reserve questions for safe moments. Ask for explanations between pulls or while the team is regrouping. During an active mechanic, use concise status calls such as “ready,” “missed,” “safe” or “need help.”

Entitlement and access checks

Raid availability in the activity menu does not by itself tell you which expansion or other entitlement a particular account needs. Check the raid’s in-game launch screen and each player’s account access before the scheduled session. This avoids discovering that one member cannot enter after the team has assembled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Time and difficulty planning

Raids have complex mechanics, tough enemies and bosses, and exclusive weapon and armor drops. Reserve a longer block than you would for a strike, especially when teaching a first-timer. If the group has limited time, agree in advance whether the goal is a learning checkpoint, a partial clear or a full completion.

Loot, featured rotations and changing rules

Bungie has announced updates to raid and dungeon rewards that revisit weapons and armor with tier parity, set bonuses and new perks, alongside the return of weekly featured raids and dungeons. Those systems can affect which activity is most attractive on a particular week, but the exact featured rotation and reward rules are not permanent. Check the current in-game reward panel before choosing a raid for a specific drop.

That distinction is important for returning players: a raid can be the best Wrath substitute even when it is not the week’s featured activity, while a featured raid can be the efficient choice when your immediate goal is a reward rather than a mood match.

A quick decision path

  1. Want the machinery and Fallen-adjacent feeling? Start with Deep Stone Crypt.
  2. Want a returning D1 story and a huge confrontation? Choose King’s Fall.
  3. Want the original Destiny raid connection? Run Vault of Glass.
  4. Want dense symbols, handoffs and callouts? Play Vow of the Disciple.
  5. Already have a practiced raid team and want the hardest modern test? Move to Salvation’s Edge.
  6. Want a different flavor? Pick Crota’s End for D1 nostalgia, Last Wish for an elaborate Dreaming City journey, Garden of Salvation for Vex puzzles, or a newer option such as Root of Nightmares or The Desert Perpetual.

Final recommendation

Deep Stone Crypt is the best first choice for someone who specifically misses Wrath of the Machine. It preserves the strongest combination of machinery, technology and Fallen-adjacent science-fiction atmosphere while remaining a substantial six-player raid. King’s Fall and Vault of Glass are better when the memory is primarily about Destiny 1 history; Vow of the Disciple and Salvation’s Edge are better when the memory is about communication and challenge. Match the raid to the part of Wrath you actually miss, then confirm the live activity list, access requirements and weekly rewards before your fireteam launches.
