The best-supported alternatives to the Dell XPS 13 are the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 for people whose work fits macOS, and the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition for buyers who need Windows. Choose by operating system and the exact configuration—not by screen size or a headline battery claim alone.
Which XPS 13 alternative should you choose?
| Option | Best fit | What the available evidence establishes | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 | Work, school, and travel if macOS supports your apps and devices | Apple’s 2026 specifications list a 13.6-inch display, 1.23 kg weight, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, and manufacturer estimates of up to 15 hours of wireless web use and up to 18 hours of video streaming. Apple specifications | App and peripheral compatibility, configuration, local price, and whether two Thunderbolt ports meet your needs |
| Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition | Windows users looking for a somewhat larger display and more ports | RTINGS’ 2026 13–14-inch guide names it as an XPS 13 alternative for a larger display, wider port selection, and more configuration options. Choose the operating system before comparing specs
The MacBook Air is a cross-platform alternative, not a Windows replacement. Check that required work or school software runs on macOS, and that your organization supports it. Also verify compatibility for specialist applications, exam software, printers, docks, and other peripherals before switching platforms.

If Windows is essential, the ThinkPad is the named alternative in RTINGS’ current guide. Its recommendation is a useful starting point, not a substitute for checking the specific configuration offered in your region.

Apple’s 2026 specification page lists a 13.6-inch display with a 2560-by-1664 resolution, 16 GB of unified memory and a 512 GB SSD in the baseline configuration, plus upgrade options. The listed weight is 1.23 kg (2.7 pounds). For travel, that is a published laptop weight—not a whole-bag figure that includes its charger and accessories. See Apple’s MacBook Air specifications.

Those qualitative advantages do not establish that every X1 Carbon configuration is lighter, lasts longer, or costs less than an XPS 13. Before choosing a listing, confirm its generation and screen, processor, memory, storage, weight, warranty, local price, and availability. Do not assume that a configuration discussed in a buying guide is identical to the one sold in your country.

Compare portability, battery, and ports in context
Portability includes the kit you carry
Screen diagonal alone does not tell you which laptop is easier to travel with. Compare device weight and dimensions, then factor in the charger, adapters, or dock your normal setup requires. Apple publishes the MacBook Air’s 1.23 kg weight; the cited sources do not provide a uniform whole-bag comparison across both candidates.
RTINGS’ travel-laptop guide frames travel choices around size, weight, and battery life. Use those as practical checks, rather than treating “travel laptop” as a single specification. See RTINGS’ travel laptop guide.

Do not rank battery life from unlike numbers
Apple’s “up to” figures describe its own wireless-web and video-streaming workloads. They cannot be directly ranked against another laptop’s result unless the test workload and conditions match. The cited guides do not provide a uniform independent battery-test comparison for these two specific configurations.
Match ports to your daily connections
The MacBook Air’s published port list is specific: two Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe 3, and a headphone jack. RTINGS describes the ThinkPad as having a wider port selection than the XPS 13, but that qualitative comparison does not replace checking the port list for the exact configuration you plan to buy.

How to make a fair price and configuration comparison
- Set the platform requirement. Eliminate any laptop that cannot run your essential work or school software or connect to required devices.
- Match the configurations. Compare processor, memory, storage, display, and warranty—not just the model names.
- Check current local listings. Compare prices and availability in your country for those matched configurations. A like-for-like regional price comparison is not established here.
- Evaluate your actual carry setup. Include laptop, charger, and adapters or dock, then consider the ports and display connections your routine needs.
- Interpret battery claims by workload. Keep manufacturer estimates separate from independent tests, and compare test results only when their workloads and conditions are comparable.
What the available comparisons do not settle
The cited material does not establish a universal winner for keyboard feel, touchpad quality, camera, microphone, whole-bag weight, or like-for-like price. It also does not supply a complete official specification matrix for the ThinkPad or uniform independent battery tests across both candidates. Check those details against the exact models and regional listings you are considering rather than inferring a winner from the product family name.
