Best Defensive Investments for Reducing Technology-Stock Volatility

The most reliable defense against technology-stock volatility is not a single “safe” asset. It is a portfolio built around a cash reserve, high-quality fixed income, and equity exposure spread across sectors and regions. Treasury bills, insured deposits, and money-market funds can protect money needed soon. High-quality bond funds usually provide better long-term diversification and income potential than holding all of that money in cash. Broad stock funds reduce dependence on technology while preserving growth, and minimum-volatility funds can moderate equity swings without removing stock-market risk. Gold and other alternatives are optional diversifiers, not dependable insurance.

The right mix depends on when you need the money, how much price movement you can tolerate, your tax situation, and how concentrated your current technology holdings are. The guide below compares the main choices and gives a sequence for reducing concentration without making a rushed all-or-nothing move.

What makes a defensive investment defensive?

A defensive investment is intended to make a portfolio less vulnerable to a particular source of loss, usually by having lower price volatility, a different economic exposure, or enough liquidity to cover spending without selling risky assets. “Defensive” does not mean guaranteed to rise when technology stocks fall. Every option has a different failure mode: cash can lose purchasing power to inflation, bond funds can decline when interest rates rise, broad stock funds still fall in bear markets, and gold can be volatile without producing income.

The Securities and Exchange Commission defines diversification as “the practice of spreading money among different investments to reduce risk.” Its investor guidance also says bonds are generally less volatile than stocks but offer more modest returns. The practical implication is to combine assets whose prices and cash flows do not respond identically to technology-sector news.

Start with your time horizon and technology concentration

Match the defense to when you will spend the money

  • Within the next year: prioritize principal stability and access. Treasury bills, insured certificates of deposit, savings deposits, and money-market funds are cash equivalents with a very low probability of loss, although they carry inflation and reinvestment risk.
  • One to five years: use a ladder of short-term Treasuries or CDs and, where appropriate, short-duration high-quality bonds. Avoid taking long-duration interest-rate risk for a near-term liability.
  • More than five years: a diversified high-quality bond allocation and broad equity exposure can provide more durable purchasing-power potential than keeping everything in cash. Short-term reserves should still be separated from long-term investments.

Measure concentration before selling anything

Look through mutual funds and exchange-traded funds to estimate how much of the portfolio depends on technology companies. A portfolio may appear diversified while several funds own the same large technology holdings. Also check employer stock, options, restricted shares, and sector-specific funds. Concentration risk is the combined effect of the position itself and the income or career risk tied to the same industry.

Write a target range for technology exposure rather than trying to identify the exact market top. A gradual schedule can reduce the chance that one emotional decision determines the outcome. Taxable accounts may require a tax-aware transition; retirement accounts generally offer more flexibility, but account rules still matter.

Defensive choices compared

The table uses qualitative descriptions because actual volatility, yield, duration, and credit quality vary by security and fund. A short Treasury bill and a long-duration bond fund are both commonly called “bonds,” yet their behavior can be very different.

Option Expected price volatility Interest-rate sensitivity Issuer or credit risk Liquidity Inflation exposure Income generation Equity upside retained Best fit
Treasury bills Very low when held to maturity; market value can move before maturity Low because maturities are short Very low federal credit risk High in normal markets High: fixed payments may lose purchasing power Interest set by prevailing short-term rates None Cash reserves and spending within roughly one year
Certificates of deposit Low when held to maturity; early-withdrawal penalties may apply Low for short maturities; varies with term Bank credit, usually with applicable deposit insurance limits Lower than Treasury bills if funds are locked High Contractual interest None Known spending dates and principal stability
Savings deposits and money-market funds Very low for deposits; money-market funds are not bank deposits Low Deposit or fund-portfolio risk, depending on vehicle Generally high High Variable short-term yield None Emergency reserves and immediate liquidity
Short-term, high-quality bond fund Low to moderate; daily net asset value changes Lower duration than longer bond funds Low when focused on Treasuries and investment-grade issuers High on trading days High to moderate Regular distributions, not guaranteed None Short- to medium-term goals where modest fluctuations are acceptable
Diversified high-quality bond fund Usually much lower than stocks, but can decline materially Depends on average duration; longer duration means greater sensitivity Low to moderate, depending on government and corporate mix High on trading days Moderate to high Regular distributions, not guaranteed None Medium- and long-term ballast around equities
Long-duration Treasury or bond fund Higher than short-term bonds when rates move High Very low Treasury issuer risk; interest-rate risk remains High on trading days High Interest distributions None Investors with a long horizon who understand rate risk
Broad multi-sector, multi-region equity fund Moderate to high; still falls in stock sell-offs Not applicable as a bond duration measure Company and market risk spread across holdings High for widely traded funds Lower than cash over long periods, but uncertain Dividends vary Yes Long-term growth with less technology concentration
Minimum-volatility equity fund Designed to be lower than its broad equity benchmark, not low in absolute terms Not applicable as a bond duration measure Stock-market and model-concentration risk Usually high for an exchange-traded fund Still exposed to equity inflation risk Dividends vary Yes, but may lag strong rallies Equity investors seeking a lower-volatility objective
Gold or other alternatives Can be high and unpredictable Not applicable No issuer credit risk for allocated physical metal; vehicle and market risks vary Depends on the vehicle Price may respond to inflation, but no protection is assured None for gold itself No direct equity upside Optional, modest diversifier rather than insurance

High-quality bonds: the core ballast for a long horizon

Why bonds can offset stock volatility

High-quality government and investment-grade bonds have contractual interest and principal terms, so their cash flows are generally less sensitive to company earnings than stocks. Vanguard President and Chief Investment Officer Greg Davis wrote on March 26, 2024, that over the long term, high-quality bond funds have tended to offer better diversification against stock volatility and higher yield potential than cash. That statement describes a historical tendency, not a promise that bonds will rise whenever technology shares fall.

Understand duration before buying a bond fund

Vanguard’s bond guidance states that “bond prices change in the opposite direction of interest rate changes.” Duration is a practical estimate of that sensitivity. If a fund has a longer average duration, a given increase in market yields normally produces a larger decline in its price; a decrease in yields normally produces a larger gain. The fund’s maturity, coupon structure, and portfolio turnover also matter.

Use shorter duration when the money has a near-term job or when a temporary price decline would force a sale. A longer-duration allocation can be reasonable for an investor with many years to wait and a deliberate view about interest-rate risk, but it should not be labeled cash.

Choose credit quality deliberately

Treasury-heavy funds minimize issuer default risk, but their long-term return may be lower than a diversified portfolio that includes investment-grade corporate bonds. Adding corporate issuers can increase income potential while adding credit-spread and default risk. Read the fund’s credit-quality breakdown, average duration, maturity distribution, and concentration by issuer before treating it as a defensive holding.

Short-term Treasuries, CDs, and cash equivalents

When a Treasury bill is safer than a bond fund

A Treasury bill has a stated maturity of one year or less. If held to maturity, the investor receives the bill’s face value, subject to the federal government’s obligations, and is not forced to sell at an interim market price. A bond fund has no maturity date for the investor: its net asset value changes every trading day, and the manager continually buys and sells securities. Even a fund holding only Treasuries can lose value temporarily when yields rise.

That difference matters for an emergency reserve or a payment due on a known date. A ladder of bills maturing before each payment can reduce the need to sell during a market decline. The trade-off is that each maturity must be reinvested at whatever rates are available then.

CDs and deposits

Certificates of deposit can lock in a rate for a chosen term, while savings deposits and money-market funds provide more immediate access. Check withdrawal rules, insurance coverage, settlement timing, and whether a money-market vehicle is a bank deposit or a fund. Short-term instruments generally offer lower expected growth than a diversified long-term portfolio and can lose purchasing power if inflation exceeds their yield.

Broad diversification away from technology

Moving from a concentrated technology position into one other sector is not true diversification. A broad equity fund that owns many sectors and regions spreads company, sector, and country exposure while retaining participation in long-term economic growth. The SEC notes that selecting assets that behave differently can reduce fluctuations and smooth the ride, but diversification cannot guarantee a profit or prevent losses.

Build a deliberate equity mix

  • Use a broad domestic fund or portfolio rather than a technology-sector fund as the core equity exposure.
  • Add international developed and emerging-market exposure if it fits your tax, currency, and risk constraints.
  • Check the underlying holdings of every fund to avoid recreating technology concentration through overlapping mega-cap positions.
  • Keep the equity allocation consistent with the years until the money is needed; diversification does not make a short-horizon stock investment safe.

What diversification cannot do

Technology companies can fall together with other growth stocks, broad indexes, and international markets during a global risk-off event. A diversified equity portfolio may reduce the damage from one company or sector, but it will not eliminate market drawdowns. Its benefit is a smoother distribution of risks over time, not a guaranteed positive return in every month.

Minimum-volatility equity funds

A minimum-volatility fund remains an equity investment. Vanguard’s Global Minimum Volatility Fund, for example, seeks lower volatility than the global equity market through quantitative security selection, diversification constraints, and currency hedging. The approach can tilt toward defensive sectors, lower-beta companies, or other characteristics identified by its rules.

When it can help

It may suit an investor who needs to remain invested in stocks for long-term growth but wants a lower-volatility objective than a standard global equity index. It can serve as a satellite allocation around a diversified core, especially when the alternative would be abandoning equities after a sharp decline.

Risks and trade-offs

  • It can still lose substantial value in a broad stock-market decline.
  • Its rules may concentrate the portfolio in particular sectors or factors at times.
  • It can lag a conventional equity index during a strong technology-led rally.
  • Quantitative screens and currency hedges introduce implementation choices that should be reviewed in the prospectus.

Evaluate the fund against its stated benchmark and objective, not against a cash return. “Lower volatility” is a relative target, not a guarantee of a positive result.

Gold, commodities, and other alternatives

Gold, silver, commodities, and cryptocurrencies do not provide contractual interest or dividends. Their prices can respond to inflation expectations, real interest rates, currency moves, supply disruptions, and investor sentiment. Those drivers may differ from technology-stock drivers, but the relationship is unstable.

Vanguard warns that “treating gold, or any alternative, as dependable portfolio insurance embeds an expectation that is inconsistent with how diversification actually works.” If an alternative is included, size it according to its volatility and intended role. Decide in advance what loss you could tolerate and how you would rebalance; do not assume a fixed hedge ratio will work in every sell-off.

What current forecasts imply—and what they do not

Forecasts can help set expectations, but they are not a reason to trade a personal portfolio on a precise date. Vanguard’s 2024 outlook projected the following annualized ranges for the next decade:

Asset group Forecast annualized return Qualification
U.S. equities 3.7%–5.7% Vanguard forecast published in 2024; not a guarantee
International equities 6.9%–8.9% Vanguard forecast published in 2024; not a guarantee
U.S. and international bonds 3.9%–4.9% Vanguard forecast published in 2024; nominal annualized return; not a guarantee

In a 2025 asset-allocation report, Vanguard estimated a 25%–30% probability of an AI-growth disappointment scenario and reported an expected 4%–5% return range for the referenced fixed-income allocation as of September 30, 2025. These are scenario estimates and allocation assumptions, not predictions of what any individual bond fund or portfolio will earn.

A practical implementation sequence

  1. Set the reserve first. Calculate essential spending, emergency needs, taxes, and planned withdrawals. Hold the amount needed soon in an accessible savings vehicle, money-market fund, short Treasury bills, or a CD ladder whose maturities match the spending dates.
  2. Separate near-term money from ballast. Decide how much of the remaining portfolio should be in bonds. Select duration and credit quality based on the time horizon and the largest temporary decline you could tolerate without selling.
  3. Reduce technology concentration gradually if appropriate. Set a target range for technology exposure, then direct new contributions, dividends, and scheduled sales toward underrepresented sectors, regions, and fixed income. In taxable accounts, compare capital-gains taxes with the risk of leaving the concentration unchanged.
  4. Choose broad equity exposure. Review sector, country, company, and fund overlap. A broad fund should be genuinely broad rather than several products that all hold the same technology leaders.
  5. Add a minimum-volatility fund only for a defined role. Treat it as equity, examine its benchmark and methodology, and keep its allocation consistent with your ability to withstand stock losses.
  6. Treat alternatives as optional. If gold or another alternative is used, document its purpose, maximum allocation, and rebalancing rule. Do not count it as a substitute for cash or high-quality bonds.
  7. Rebalance on a written rule. Rebalance on a calendar schedule or when an allocation moves materially outside its target band. A rule-based sale of an outperforming asset and purchase of an underweight asset is less dependent on headlines.
  8. Review account details before trading. Check expense ratios, bid-ask spreads, fund concentration, taxes, settlement times, insurance limits, and whether the account permits the intended security. Seek individualized advice when withdrawals, concentrated employer stock, or tax constraints are complex.

Common mistakes and fixes

Moving everything to cash after a technology sell-off

Cash removes immediate stock-market volatility but creates reinvestment and inflation risk. Fix the problem you actually have: keep the reserve needed for spending, then set a long-term allocation for bonds and diversified equities rather than making an indefinite market-timing decision.

Assuming every bond fund is stable

Long duration, lower credit quality, and concentrated portfolios can produce large losses even when the word “bond” appears in the name. Read duration and credit data before purchasing.

Using a minimum-volatility label as a guarantee

The label describes an objective relative to an equity market. It does not promise that the fund will preserve capital or outperform in a downturn.

Buying gold as a guaranteed hedge

Gold has no contractual cash flow and can decline at the same time as stocks. If its role cannot be explained in one sentence and sized within a loss limit, it is probably being used as an emotional insurance purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring taxes and fees

A lower-volatility portfolio can still be damaged by unnecessary taxable gains, high expense ratios, trading spreads, or penalties for breaking a CD. Estimate the after-tax, after-fee result before changing allocations.

Bottom-line decision framework

  • Need the money within a year? Favor Treasury bills, suitable deposits, money-market funds, or a short CD ladder.
  • Need a steadier long-term portfolio? Use high-quality bonds with duration matched to your horizon, while keeping enough cash for near-term spending.
  • Want growth with less technology concentration? Shift the equity core toward broad sector and geographic funds.
  • Want to remain in stocks but reduce relative swings? Consider a minimum-volatility fund as a limited equity satellite, understanding that it can still lose money.
  • Considering gold or another alternative? Treat it as an optional, sized diversifier—not portfolio insurance.

Defensive investing works best as a repeatable allocation and rebalancing process. It is less about finding the one asset that will win during an AI-stock sell-off and more about ensuring that no single sector, maturity range, issuer, or market outcome can determine whether your financial plan succeeds.
