There is no single best deepfake detector. The right choice depends on whether you are checking a still image, recorded or live video, audio, or an identity-proofing session. Detection systems estimate the likelihood that the analyzed file contains manipulation signals; they do not automatically prove who created it, who appears in it, whether the person consented, or whether the file is legally authentic. For high-stakes decisions, combine a modality-appropriate detector with preserved provenance, content credentials or watermark checks where available, a defined test set, and human review.
What a deepfake detector can actually tell you
Most automated tools answer a narrow forensic question: Does this media contain patterns associated with synthetic generation or editing? The output may be a confidence score, a binary flag, a heat map, an explanation, or an analyst case record. Treat that output as evidence about manipulation likelihood, not as a certificate of truth.

A positive result can mean that the system found artifacts consistent with a known manipulation technique. It does not identify the generator, establish the date or place of recording, or prove that every frame or word is fabricated. A negative result means only that the system did not detect its target signals at the chosen threshold. New generators, aggressive compression, cropping, low light, re-recording and deliberate adversarial changes can all reduce detection performance.
Questions a detector does not settle on its own
- Identity: A detector is not a biometric identity match. It cannot establish that the speaker is the named person.
- Origin and chain of custody: Pixel analysis does not prove which camera, application or account produced the file, or whether it was altered after capture.
- Consent and intent: A manipulated clip does not by itself show who authorized it, why it was made, or whether a person agreed to its use.
- Legal authenticity: Courts and investigators may require documented custody, validated methods and expert testimony in addition to a model score.
NIST’s identity-proofing guidance states: “A biometric comparison performed with a captured sample does not prevent these attacks.” In practice, identity systems need media-manipulation checks, protected capture channels and a human escalation path rather than relying on a face match alone.

Deepfake detection tools compared
The following comparison uses the capabilities described by the UK government’s deepfake review and Microsoft’s 2020 announcement. Where the cited material does not establish a feature, it is marked accordingly instead of being inferred.
| Tool | Primary modality | Evidence approach | Output | Deployment described | What it can support | What the cited material does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Video Authenticator | Still images and video, including real-time analysis | Signals associated with artificial manipulation; developed with the FaceForensics++ public dataset and tested on the DeepFake Detection Challenge Dataset | Confidence score that media is artificially manipulated | Real-time analysis is described; current public availability and commercial terms are not stated | Prioritising a file or stream for further forensic review | Creator identity, consent, chain of custody, legal authenticity, or universal accuracy across current generators |
| Intel FakeCatcher | Real-time video | Biological signals, specifically photoplethysmography (PPG) patterns inferred from blood-flow changes in video pixels | Real-time authenticity assessment | Real-time video detection | Checking whether live facial video contains expected biological-signal patterns | Reliable operation on still images, audio, every edited-file condition, replay attacks, or all cameras and lighting environments |
| Reality Defender | Audio deepfake detection is specifically identified; broader multimodal scope is not established in the cited material | Audio signals associated with synthetic speech; a partnership with ElevenLabs is noted | Enterprise detection capability; exact score format is not stated | Enterprise provider; current access, pricing and partner terms are not stated | Adding a specialised audio check to a fraud or media-review workflow | Coverage of every voice, codec, replay condition or generator, and any guaranteed performance level |
These are not interchangeable products. A live-video biological-signal system is solving a different problem from an audio model, and a confidence score from one system cannot be compared directly with a score from another without a shared benchmark and calibration procedure.
How detection methods work
Pixel and image-artifact analysis
Image-oriented models inspect local texture, edges, lighting and other pixel relationships that can be disturbed by face replacement, reenactment or image synthesis. They may examine a complete frame or highlight regions that influenced a result. Resizing, screenshots and social-platform recompression can erase or imitate those patterns, so the original file and its processing history matter.

Video systems can compare adjacent frames for unstable facial boundaries, inconsistent expressions, lighting changes or motion that does not match the surrounding scene. A detector trained on one generation method may miss a newer method that produces different temporal artifacts. A score therefore needs the model version, threshold and test conditions attached to it.

Biological signals in live video
Intel FakeCatcher is described as using photoplethysmography: subtle blood-flow changes inferred from face pixels. This approach expects a live stream with enough visible skin area, frame quality and temporal continuity to estimate the signal. It should not be presented as a universal detector for photographs, audio or every file that has been edited and re-encoded.
Audio-signal analysis
Audio detectors look for characteristics associated with voice cloning or synthetic speech. Codec conversion, background noise, telephone bandwidth, loudspeaker replay and overlapping speakers can change the signal. Ask whether a service evaluates direct recordings, replayed audio and the codecs used in your workflow before treating a result as decisive.
Metadata, provenance and watermarks
Metadata and provenance answer a different question: What history and attestations travel with this file? Content credentials, signed capture records and watermarks can help establish origin or editing history when they are present and valid. Their absence does not prove manipulation, because many ordinary cameras and platforms do not preserve them. Their presence also does not prove that the depicted event is truthful; it shows what the credentialing system recorded or signed.

NIST’s synthetic-content work treats detection as one layer in a broader transparency stack that includes authentication, provenance, watermarking, testing and auditing. A robust review uses these layers together rather than asking a detector to answer every authenticity question.

Why one universal accuracy number is misleading
Detector performance is conditional. A percentage is meaningful only with the corpus, media type, generator families, compression, capture conditions, threshold and error trade-off stated alongside it. A model can perform well on a benchmark and degrade on an unseen generator or a file that has been repeatedly transcoded.
Test both genuine and forged media
NIST recommends evaluating genuine material as well as forged artifacts, documenting expected false-positive and false-negative rates, and adding human review. A useful acceptance test should include the kinds of files your organization actually receives: camera originals, messaging-app downloads, screen recordings, low-light clips, different resolutions and the codecs used by your publishing or call systems.
Record the operating point
Changing the threshold changes the balance between missed fakes and innocent files flagged for review. Keep the threshold, model or API version, preprocessing steps and date with every result. If a vendor quotes a number without identifying its test set and threshold, you cannot safely compare it with another vendor’s figure.
Do not generalize morph-detection results
NIST’s 2025 morph guidance reports that differential detectors reached 72% to 90% accuracy in best cases across the tested face-photo morphs. Those systems require an additional genuine photo for comparison. The figure concerns face-photo morph detection, not arbitrary video or audio deepfakes, and should not be used as a general deepfake-detector accuracy claim.

Expect distribution shift and adversarial changes
- Unseen generators: A new synthesis pipeline may not leave the artifacts represented in training data.
- Compression and resizing: Re-encoding can remove useful traces or create patterns that trigger false alarms.
- Capture conditions: Lighting, camera quality, frame rate, occlusion and motion affect both pixel and biological-signal methods.
- Replay and re-recording: Filming a screen or playing audio through a speaker changes the evidence available to the model.
- Adversarial editing: Small, intentional changes can target the detector without making the media obviously different to a viewer.
Choose by use case
For a newsroom or fact-checking desk
- Preserve the original. Save the file exactly as received, including its filename, download time, message or post URL, and any available metadata. Work on a copy so the evidentiary original is not altered.
- Document provenance. Record who supplied the file, how it was obtained and every conversion or export performed during analysis.
- Match the detector to the modality. Use an image or video system for visual media and an audio system for speech. A live-stream detector is not automatically suitable for an uploaded recording.
- Run independent checks. Compare detector output with frame-level inspection, audio waveform or spectrogram review where qualified staff are available, and provenance or credential checks.
- Escalate consequential findings. Have an independent reviewer repeat the analysis and inspect the original before publishing an allegation about a person or event.
- Report the result precisely. Say that the tool found signals consistent with manipulation at a stated confidence or threshold. Do not write that it proved a person or event was fake unless separate evidence supports that conclusion.
For identity proofing and fraud prevention
- Define the attack model. Include face replacement, presentation attacks, replayed video, injected files and synthetic or replayed audio if those threats are relevant.
- Require genuine and forged test sets. Measure false positives and false negatives on data representative of your devices, regions, lighting and network conditions.
- Use a protected capture channel. Bind the analysis to a controlled capture flow where possible, rather than accepting an arbitrary upload that could have been edited before submission.
- Set thresholds by risk. A high-value account opening may justify more manual review than a low-risk login. Document who can override a flag and why.
- Add human-in-the-loop cues. NIST recommends random challenges such as requesting a movement or placing an object between the camera and face. These cues are an additional control, not a replacement for media analysis.
- Monitor drift. Re-test when cameras, codecs, vendors or attack patterns change, and review error rates by relevant user groups.
For live video
Ask whether the system analyzes the stream at capture time or only a saved file, what frame rate and latency it needs, and how it behaves with network jitter, compression, occlusion and replay. Biological-signal methods need a sufficiently continuous view of the face; a short, low-quality or heavily filtered stream may not provide usable evidence. Plan a fallback path when the signal is inconclusive rather than converting “no result” into “real.”
For audio and voice-cloning checks
Confirm whether the service covers cloned voices, replay through a speaker, mixed or overlapping speakers, telephone codecs and common messaging-app exports. Request an interpretable explanation or segment-level evidence when possible. A single score without the tested codec and recording conditions is difficult to audit, especially when a decision affects a person’s reputation or access to funds.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical selection framework
| Question | If the answer is yes | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| What media do you receive most often? | Choose a detector built for that modality; add a second modality only when the workflow genuinely needs it. | Still-image, video, live-stream and audio models rely on different evidence. |
| Must the decision happen during capture? | Evaluate real-time latency, frame requirements and behavior under replay and network degradation. | An upload scanner cannot protect a live session by itself. |
| Do you need an auditable case record? | Prefer documented model versions, thresholds, input hashes, analyst notes and exportable results. | A score without context is hard to reproduce or defend. |
| Are false positives costly? | Demand genuine-media testing and a human escalation path before deployment. | Overly aggressive thresholds can block legitimate people or publication. |
| Are files routinely recompressed? | Test the exact platform and codec pipeline, including screenshots and screen recordings. | Compression can change both detection sensitivity and false-alarm rates. |
| Do you need origin evidence? | Add provenance, content-credential or watermark verification to detection. | Manipulation likelihood and chain of custody are separate questions. |
Common failure modes and what to do
The tool returns “inconclusive”
Do not treat an inconclusive result as authentic. Check whether the file is too short, low resolution, heavily compressed, cropped, occluded or outside the tool’s supported modality. Preserve the original, obtain a higher-quality copy from the source and send the case to human review.
Two detectors disagree
Different models may target different signals and use different thresholds. Verify that both analyzed the same unmodified file, then compare their test coverage and operating points. The disagreement is a reason to inspect provenance and escalate, not to average the scores or choose the more convenient result.
Best Value
A genuine file is flagged
Check for unusual lighting, makeup, motion blur, aggressive sharpening, screen capture or a codec absent from the benchmark. Add similar genuine examples to your validation set, adjust the threshold only after measuring the resulting false-negative rate, and retain a manual appeal route.
A known fake passes
Record the generator, edit path, resolution and compression, then add the sample to a controlled challenge set. Re-test after model updates and avoid claiming coverage of generator families that were not evaluated. A pass means the detector did not find its target signals at that operating point.
The file has valid provenance but looks manipulated
Verify the credential signature and the scope of what it attests to. Provenance can show that a particular device or service created or edited a file; it does not guarantee that the scene itself was truthful or that later transformations were harmless. Resolve the conflict through independent review and documented chain-of-custody analysis.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How to report a detector result responsibly
Use language that preserves the boundary between evidence and conclusion. A defensible report identifies the file, tool and version, preprocessing, threshold, date, result, known limitations and reviewer. For example: “The analyzed video produced a high manipulation-likelihood score from [tool name] at threshold [value]. The result is consistent with synthetic or edited content; it does not establish the speaker’s identity, the source recording, consent or legal authenticity.” Put any variable syntax such as [tool name] and [value] in your internal template rather than publishing unresolved placeholders.
When the evidence is negative, write: “The system did not detect its evaluated manipulation signals under the stated conditions.” That wording avoids turning a model’s limitation into a claim that the media is genuine.
Bottom line: combine specialized detection with provenance and review
Microsoft Video Authenticator is described as providing a confidence score for manipulation in still images and video; Intel FakeCatcher focuses on biological signals in real-time video; Reality Defender is identified for audio deepfake detection. None of these descriptions establishes universal accuracy or proves identity and legal authenticity. Select the system that matches your modality, validate it on genuine and forged media from your own pipeline, document false-positive and false-negative behavior, and keep a trained human in the decision loop. Detection is strongest as one component of a broader authenticity process that also checks provenance, credentials or watermarks and chain of custody.
