Best Deadhand Theater settings for Steam Deck and low-end PCs

Start with the lowest quality preset, a 30 FPS cap, and native output: 1280×800 on Steam Deck or 1280×720 on a low-end Windows PC. Reduce shadows, ambient effects, and post-processing before lowering texture quality, then change one option at a time while checking frame pacing and card text. These are cautious starting points inferred from the published PC requirements, not measured benchmarks.

Deadhand Theater is still unreleased. Steam shows its release date as “To be announced,” SteamDB lists Windows support, and neither the developer nor the store listing publishes a Steam Deck rating, Deck preset, graphics-menu list, or FPS test. Exact performance therefore remains unverified until a released build is tested.

The recommended starting profile

Use the following profile before trying to raise visual quality. It favors stable animation and readable cards over maximum effects, which is appropriate for a turn-based game whose interface carries much of the action.

Setting Steam Deck Low-end Windows PC Why this starting point
Output resolution 1280×800 1280×720 These are conservative targets that avoid unnecessary scaling while leaving headroom for the published minimum GPU.
Quality preset Low or the lowest available Low or the lowest available There is no official Deck preset, so begin with the least demanding profile the released build exposes.
Frame-rate cap 30 FPS 30 FPS A fixed cap is easier to pace consistently than an uncapped rate that repeatedly rises and falls.
Shadows Lower first Lower first Dynamic shadows can be expensive without improving the readability of cards or menus.
Ambient effects and post-processing Lower after shadows Lower after shadows These effects are usually less important than clear text and stable frame delivery.
Textures Keep above the minimum only if frame pacing and memory use remain stable Lower after shadows and post-processing Texture quality often affects image clarity more than frame time, so it should not be the first sacrifice.
Input Mouse, trackpad, or another pointer that the build accepts Basic USB or wired gaming mouse Steam tags the game “Mouse Only,” making pointer input the safest assumption.

Do not treat any row as a guaranteed FPS result. The game has not shipped a public Deck profile, and the only official graphics baseline currently listed is a GTX 1060 minimum for Windows.

What Deadhand Theater is and why the settings question is uncertain

Bag Track Games describes the project as “a dark, turn-based roguelike deckbuilder where you play poker hands to command your shadow puppet’s attacks.” The design combines card and poker decisions with body-horror customization: the itch.io page says you can sacrifice body parts for active effects, build decks with cards and sigils, buy talismans, reattach limbs, and deal with hexes and stage modifiers.

The same page identifies build v0.3.1 and says it was updated 9 September 2026. Its published content counts are 60 talismans, 40 sigils, 45 hexes, 25 grafts, and 30 stage modifiers. Steam uses similar wording, including the line “Tear off a limb for a desperate edge, refine your deck, and survive one more fight.” Steam lists Bag Track Games as both developer and publisher, but the release date remains to be announced and the game is not yet available there.

That status matters for hardware advice. Menus, shader compilation, controller handling, and performance can change between an early build and launch. A recommendation can identify a sensible order for testing, but it cannot turn an unpublished Deck profile into a benchmark.

Published PC requirements and what they imply

Steam’s 2026 listing gives the following Windows requirements. The storage figure is listed as 1 GB available; the page does not publish a separate recommended-storage figure, so the same published requirement is shown in both rows below.

Tier Operating system Processor Memory Graphics Storage
Minimum Windows 10 Intel Core i3 8 GB RAM GeForce GTX 1060 1 GB available
Recommended Windows 10 Intel Core i5 8 GB RAM GeForce RTX 2060 1 GB available requirement; no separate recommended value stated

These are compatibility targets supplied by the publisher through Steam, not a promise of a particular resolution or frame rate. A desktop or laptop that meets the minimum should be evaluated at the low preset first. Hardware older than a GTX 1060, especially an unspecified integrated GPU, cannot be assumed to meet the requirement simply because the game is turn-based.

SteamDB currently identifies the parent app as Windows-only and records Unreal Engine. That metadata does not establish SteamOS or Proton compatibility, and it is not a substitute for an official Deck rating.

Steam Deck setup: a cautious step-by-step profile

1. Confirm what the released build actually exposes

Once the game is available, open its video or graphics menu and note the exact labels. The early material does not publish a graphics-option breakdown, so you may see different names for quality presets, render scale, ambient effects, or post-processing. Record the initial values before changing anything; this makes it possible to undo a change that harms readability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Use the Deck’s native output first

Choose 1280×800 when that resolution is offered. Native output avoids an additional scaling step and gives card text and menus the clearest starting image. If the game presents only a 16:9 list, 1280×720 is a reasonable fallback, but inspect the interface afterward for cropped or unusually small text.

3. Select the lowest available preset

Choose Low, or the lowest named preset in the final build. A preset is only a starting point: some games leave expensive shadows or effects enabled even on Low, while others reduce texture detail more than necessary. Use the individual controls in the next steps to recover clarity without immediately raising every option.

4. Set a fixed 30 FPS target

Use the game’s own frame-rate limiter if it has one. If the build provides no limiter, use the frame-limit control available in your SteamOS performance tools. A fixed 30 FPS target is a conservative choice for a turn-based title because consistent frame delivery makes selecting cards and reading combat feedback more dependable than a fluctuating higher rate.

5. Reduce shadows, ambient effects, and post-processing

Lower shadows first, then ambient effects and post-processing. These controls can reduce GPU work while preserving the texture detail that keeps cards, talismans, and menus legible. If the game separates bloom, depth of field, motion blur, or film grain, disable or reduce those options when they obscure small text; do not assume every effect has the same performance cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Test texture quality separately

Leave textures above the lowest value if memory use and frame pacing remain stable. Textures are often the setting most visible in a card-driven interface, so lowering them can make the game look muddy without fixing a bottleneck caused by shadows or effects. If you see hitching when entering a new room or stage, test a lower texture level and compare the result over several transitions.

  • The durable, compact design with built-in nano receiver storage makes G305 not just a great portable desktop mouse, but also a great laptop travel companion, use with a gaming laptop and play anywhere

7. Check readability after every change

Open a deck screen, a combat screen, and any shop or upgrade screen. Verify that card names, costs, status icons, and tooltips remain readable from your normal handheld distance. A setting that improves an FPS counter but makes a key value hard to read is not an improvement for this game.

Low-end Windows PC setup

Start at 1280×720

Set 1280×720 in fullscreen or borderless mode, whichever gives steadier frame delivery on your system. The lower target than the Deck’s 1280×800 recommendation is intentional: many low-end monitors and laptops have a 16:9 panel, and 720p reduces the number of pixels the GTX 1060 minimum has to process.

Use Low, then cap at 30 FPS

Apply the lowest preset and set a 30 FPS cap. Do not begin with an uncapped mode to see a large peak number; a short burst of high FPS says little about consistency during effects, room transitions, or a busy combat board.

Close competing software while diagnosing stutter

Temporarily close browser windows, overlays, background capture, and hardware-monitoring tools that add their own rendering layers. This is a troubleshooting step, not a permanent requirement. Re-enable one utility at a time after the game is stable so you can identify which program, if any, causes hitching.

Change one option per test scene

Use the same combat encounter or menu sequence for each comparison. Change one setting, play long enough to observe frame pacing, and write down whether the result improved, worsened, or stayed the same. Changing several controls together hides the cause and makes it harder to return to a readable configuration.

How to tune resolution, effects, and frame pacing

Resolution and render scale

Resolution changes affect both performance and legibility. Lowering output or render scale can help when the GPU is saturated, but it also makes text and card borders softer. Because Deadhand Theater relies on reading cards, sigils, and status information, use the smallest reduction that solves a real frame-time problem. Restore native output if menus become difficult to parse.

Shadows and lighting

Shadows are a sensible first cut because they can involve several light sources and do not usually change the information conveyed by a card or tooltip. If the game offers shadow distance, map size, or contact-shadow controls, reduce the broadest quality option before turning every light completely off. The exact controls may differ in the final build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Post-processing and ambient effects

Post-processing can include screen-space effects, bloom, depth of field, color grading, or motion blur. Disable effects that reduce contrast or make the interface harder to read. Ambient occlusion and similar scene-wide effects can be reduced after shadows. Keep a note of each change because an early build may group several effects under one slider.

Frame cap versus visual quality

When the game cannot hold the chosen cap, lowering visual quality is preferable to leaving the limiter uncapped and allowing repeated swings. If reducing resolution produces no meaningful change, the limitation may be CPU time, shader compilation, background activity, or frame pacing rather than raw pixel load. In that case, keep the stable cap, close competing processes, and test again after the same scene has been cached.

Input: why a mouse matters

Steam assigns Deadhand Theater the user-defined tag “Mouse Only.” That tag does not specify whether the final build will support a controller, but it does establish that mouse input is the most defensible assumption for desktop and docked play.

  • Desktop: keep a basic USB or wired gaming mouse available, especially if the laptop’s trackpad is slow or imprecise.
  • Docked Deck: connect a mouse before judging the game’s control feel. A keyboard-and-mouse setup may be more practical than trying to force controller bindings that the build does not expose.
  • Handheld Deck: test the built-in trackpad or touchscreen only if the released version accepts those inputs cleanly. Pointer acceleration, small hit targets, and text selection can make a technically functioning control scheme uncomfortable.

No particular mouse model has been tested or endorsed. The useful requirement is accurate pointer movement and a reliable connection, not a gaming specification.

Choosing a target based on your hardware

Your situation Practical starting decision What you can and cannot conclude
Windows PC at or above the listed minimum Use 1280×720, Low, 30 FPS, then tune shadows and post-processing. The hardware matches the published baseline, but no FPS guarantee is provided.
Windows PC near the recommended tier Start with the same conservative profile, then raise one effect at a time if frame pacing stays consistent. The RTX 2060 and Core i5 are the published recommended examples; the listing does not state a tested resolution or frame rate.
Older GPU or integrated graphics below the listed baseline Try the lowest settings only if you already own the game, beginning at 720p and a 30 FPS cap. Compatibility and performance are unverified; do not assume the GTX 1060 minimum is met.
Steam Deck Use 1280×800, Low, 30 FPS, and reduce shadows and post-processing before textures. No official Deck rating, Deck preset, or measured FPS is published, and SteamDB currently lists Windows support.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The frame rate fluctuates even on Low

  • Keep the 30 FPS cap instead of switching to an uncapped mode.
  • Lower shadows, ambient effects, and post-processing in that order.
  • Close overlays and capture software on Windows, then repeat the same scene.
  • On Deck, check whether the problem appears during room transitions or shader-heavy effects rather than during static menus.

If none of those changes affects frame pacing, lowering textures or resolution may not address the limiting factor. Preserve readability and wait for a later build or an official performance profile rather than assuming a higher cap is sustainable.

The game looks sharp but still hitches when new areas load

Test texture quality separately and observe several transitions. A lower texture level may reduce memory pressure, but a hitch can also come from shader compilation or background activity. Avoid changing the preset, resolution, and texture setting simultaneously; otherwise you will not know which change helped.

Cards or tooltips are hard to read

  • Return to native 1280×800 on Deck or the clearest 720p output your display supports.
  • Raise textures one step if memory use and pacing allow it.
  • Reduce blur, bloom, depth of field, or other effects that lower contrast.
  • Check the display’s scaling mode and sit closer before lowering additional quality settings.

A controller does not work as expected

Because the Steam tag is “Mouse Only,” test with a physical mouse before treating the behavior as a fault. If a controller works in the final build, consider that an extra feature rather than a published requirement. The early materials do not promise controller support.

The game will not launch on Steam Deck

Do not interpret a launch failure as proof that the hardware is too slow. SteamDB’s current Windows-only listing means SteamOS compatibility is not established. Check the final store metadata and the developer’s launch notes for an official compatibility statement; until then, there is no verified Deck troubleshooting profile to apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to check when the game releases

Before replacing hardware or locking in a permanent profile, verify the information that is currently missing:

  • Whether Steam assigns a Steam Deck compatibility rating.
  • Whether the graphics menu includes a Deck preset, render-scale control, or a frame limiter.
  • Whether the final build supports controller input in addition to the Mouse Only tag.
  • Whether the Windows-only metadata changes and whether SteamOS support is documented.
  • Whether launch patches alter the published minimum or recommended hardware.

Record the build number with any performance observation. The currently identified itch.io build is v0.3.1 from 9 September 2026, while Steam still shows an unreleased product; results from an early build should not be presented as launch guarantees.

Bottom line for each platform

Steam Deck

A 1280×800, Low, 30 FPS profile with shadows and post-processing reduced is the safest starting point. Keep textures as high as the memory and frame-pacing behavior permit, and use a pointer device if trackpad or touchscreen control is uncomfortable. Treat compatibility and performance as unknown until an official Deck profile or released-build testing exists.

Low-end Windows PC

Start at 1280×720 with Low settings and a 30 FPS cap. The published minimum is Windows 10, an Intel Core i3, 8 GB RAM, a GTX 1060, and 1 GB available storage; systems below that graphics baseline may work, but no evidence establishes that they will. Tune one option at a time, prioritizing readable cards and consistent pacing over extra effects.
