The most reliable Dead by Daylight setup is not one universal preset. Start with the highest graphics quality that keeps frame pacing stable, adjust Brightness/Gamma until dark areas are readable without washing out bright surfaces, tune Colorblind controls if red information is difficult to distinguish, and choose Hold or Toggle interaction behavior separately for Survivor and Killer. Validate every change in an actual Trial because display, HDR, platform, eyesight, and role all affect the result.
The best starting point: a stable, readable baseline
Use this order when configuring the game:
- Open the Graphics or Video settings and set Brightness/Gamma so that shadowed areas are readable while bright walls, windows, and outdoor surfaces still retain detail.
- Open the Colorblind controls if red game information blends into the environment. Adjust the type and intensity to your own vision rather than copying another player’s value.
- Choose the highest graphics-quality option that produces stable frame pacing on your hardware. If you notice stutter, delayed input, or visual artifacts, lower the quality option and test again.
- Open Options → Controls and configure Interaction Behavior for Survivor and Killer independently.
- Test the result in a real Trial, not only in a menu. Check dark corners, generators, hooks, scratch marks, chase movement, repairs, healing, and Killer interactions before deciding that a setting is finished.
This approach reflects what the available official guidance establishes: gamma is now an official cross-platform visibility control; color tools matter because the game uses red for several important cues; graphics presets can change visual quality as well as speed; and interaction behavior is a genuine Hold/Toggle choice that can be different for each role.

Why there is no single “best” DBD setting
Dead by Daylight is displayed through many combinations of console or PC hardware, monitor or television panels, HDR modes, operating-system settings, room lighting, and individual eyesight. A value that reveals a dark hook on one display can make another display look gray and remove useful contrast. A graphics preset that feels smooth on one system can produce hitching or input delay on another.
Behaviour Interactive has not published a universal numeric gamma value, FPS target, mouse sensitivity, or controller layout in the guidance used for this article. Treat any number you see elsewhere as a personal starting point, not an official optimum. The meaningful test is whether you can identify game information quickly while the game remains responsive on your own setup.

Evaluate a profile on six axes:
- Readability in dark areas: Can you identify a survivor, scratch mark, hook, pallet, or generator without turning every shadow into a flat gray patch?
- Color discrimination: Can you separate red-coded information from the map and from other UI colors?
- Frame-time stability: Does camera movement remain consistent, without recurring spikes or hitching?
- Input comfort: Can you hold, release, or cancel an interaction without accidental inputs?
- Role: Does the same behavior make sense during Survivor actions and Killer actions?
- Platform and display constraints: Are console video options, HDR, panel contrast, and room lighting changing what you see?
Make dark areas readable with Brightness/Gamma
Dead by Daylight now includes an official Brightness/Gamma adjustment on all platforms. Behaviour Interactive introduced the control because, in its words, “Dead by Daylight can get a little dark – not just thematically — and sometimes excessive darkness can hinder playability.” That makes gamma the correct first adjustment when you cannot read a dark area, rather than relying immediately on television contrast or an unofficial filter.
Step-by-step gamma setup
- From the main menu, open the game’s Graphics or Video settings.
- Locate Brightness or Gamma. The exact presentation can vary by platform and display mode.
- Raise the value gradually until important details in dark areas become distinguishable.
- Check a bright surface immediately afterward. If walls, sky, fog, or other light areas lose texture and become a featureless white or gray field, reduce the value.
- Enter a Trial and inspect several conditions: an indoor room, a shaded outdoor area, a hook or generator in shadow, and a normally lit section of the map.
- Save the setting only after checking both visibility and contrast during movement. A static menu can look acceptable while a moving camera reveals crushed shadows, excessive haze, or washed-out highlights.
How to judge the result
A useful gamma setting lets you distinguish shapes and game objects; it does not make every corner equally bright. Preserve enough contrast that a dark object remains visually separate from a dark background. If you keep increasing gamma because one particular map remains abnormally dark, first determine whether the problem is a map or game issue rather than a normal visibility limitation.
Display settings can change the outcome. HDR configuration, a television’s local contrast or shadow-detail controls, a monitor’s black-level setting, and strong room lighting all affect perceived darkness. Adjust one layer at a time so you know which change helped. Keep the in-game control as your primary adjustment and avoid extreme display processing that clips bright detail or creates artificial halos.
When gamma is not the real fix
Official developer notes have documented fixes for overly dark map areas. That means some darkness complaints can be bugs or map-specific rendering problems. More aggressive brightness changes will not repair a defective lighting state; they can instead wash out every other map. If one location looks dramatically darker than the rest of the game after a patch, record the map, platform, display mode, and whether HDR is enabled, then check current patch notes or the game’s support channels before rebuilding your entire profile.
Use Colorblind controls for red-coded information
Color settings are a gameplay-accessibility issue, not merely a cosmetic preference. Behaviour Interactive explains that the game “relies heavily on the color red to highlight and identify critical game elements like scratch marks, generators, hooks, and more.” Dark environments can make that dependence harder for players who have difficulty distinguishing particular colors.

Configure the control for your own vision
- Open Graphics and find the Colorblind controls.
- Select the color adjustment that best addresses the colors you confuse. If you are unsure, try each available type in a safe menu or custom test situation rather than choosing from a screenshot.
- Increase or decrease intensity until red-coded information separates clearly from the map without making every other color distracting.
- Check scratch marks during a chase, generator highlights, hook indicators, and any red environmental cues.
- Run a Trial in both a dark and a bright environment. A filter that helps on a dark map may create excessive saturation or reduce contrast on a brighter one.
Do not assume that a color filter replaces gamma. Gamma changes luminance; color controls change how hues are separated. If both darkness and color confusion are affecting you, tune them independently and retest after each change.
What a successful color profile looks like
- Scratch marks remain visible while the camera moves, not only when you stop.
- Generator and hook cues are distinguishable from nearby map textures.
- Important red information does not disappear into dark foliage, stone, or indoor surfaces.
- The filter does not make ordinary environmental colors so intense that they compete with gameplay cues.
Improve FPS and frame-time stability without sacrificing readability
Graphics quality is a trade-off between visual detail and consistent responsiveness. The practical baseline is the highest quality option that keeps frame pacing stable on your hardware. A higher preset is not automatically better if it introduces recurring hitching, delayed input, or distracting artifacts.
Recommended Free Tools
A safe performance-tuning procedure
- Begin at the highest graphics-quality option available on your system.
- Play long enough to encounter ordinary movement, a chase, a crowded scene, indoor darkness, and multiple effects. A short menu check cannot reveal every frame-time problem.
- Watch for repeated stutter, uneven camera motion, delayed-feeling input, or visual corruption rather than chasing a single momentary slowdown.
- If any of those problems persist, lower the quality option one step and repeat the same situations.
- Stop when movement is consistently responsive and the image remains readable. Do not lower quality further merely because a lower preset is popular.
- After a game update, repeat the check. Rendering changes can alter both performance and lighting behavior.
Why the Low Quality option is not automatically the clearest
Developer notes document a shadow artifact associated with Low Quality settings. Separate notes also document fixes for overly dark map areas. These details matter because a preset can affect visual interpretation as well as speed. If Low Quality removes detail from shadows, creates an unexpected pattern, or makes a scene harder to parse, compare it with the next higher option instead of assuming the lowest setting is the competitive choice.
There is no published universal FPS gain for a particular preset in the official material used here. Results depend on the system, resolution, display mode, and other settings. Record your own observations in terms of frame-time consistency and input feel; do not treat an internet benchmark from different hardware as a promise.
Performance symptoms and the appropriate response
| Symptom | Likely setting response | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring stutter during ordinary movement | Lower the graphics-quality option and retest the same route | Whether the issue repeats after a full Trial rather than only during loading |
| Input feels delayed while the image remains detailed | Prefer the stable lower-quality option | Whether the delay disappears when frame pacing improves |
| Shadow pattern or visual artifact on Low Quality | Compare with the next higher quality option | Whether the artifact is tied specifically to the preset |
| One map or area is abnormally dark | Do not keep raising gamma automatically | Recent patch notes, map identity, HDR state, and whether other maps look normal |
| Bright surfaces lose detail after visibility changes | Reduce gamma or display shadow enhancement | Indoor and outdoor highlights in an actual Trial |
Choose Hold or Toggle interaction behavior
Interaction Behavior is configured under Options → Controls and can be set separately for Survivor and Killer. The two basic choices solve different comfort problems:

- Hold: You keep the interaction button depressed for the action. Releasing the button ends the input according to the game’s normal interaction rules.
- Toggle: You press once to begin instead of continuously holding. Behaviour Interactive’s developer notes state: “When set to Toggle, you no longer need to hold the interaction button for interaction.”
Toggle can reduce hand fatigue during long repairs, heals, searches, or other sustained actions. Hold can feel more deliberate when you want the physical act of releasing the button to stop an interaction. Neither is objectively faster, and neither changes the underlying action time.
Configure Survivor behavior
- Open Options.
- Select Controls.
- Find the Survivor section and locate Interaction Behavior.
- Choose Hold or Toggle.
- Apply the change, enter a Trial, and test a sustained action plus an action that you may need to abandon quickly.
Evaluate whether the setting lets you stop intentionally, move the camera comfortably, and avoid accidental cancellations. A profile that feels excellent for repairing may feel less natural during a tense escape, so test more than one interaction type.
Configure Killer behavior separately
- Remain in Options → Controls.
- Switch to the Killer controls section.
- Set Interaction Behavior independently of the Survivor value.
- Test actions that involve sustained input and actions that require quick movement afterward.
Separate role settings are useful because hand posture and action rhythm differ. You can use Toggle for Survivor while keeping Hold for Killer, or the reverse, without forcing one role to inherit the other’s comfort trade-off.
When to enable Run to Cancel
Run to Cancel is an additional control option for players who prefer movement to end an interaction. Enable it only if that behavior matches your muscle memory. It can make leaving an action feel immediate, but it also means an accidental movement input can cancel an interaction you intended to complete. Test it in both roles and during ordinary, low-pressure actions before relying on it in a chase.
Practical profiles you can adapt
These profiles are decision frameworks, not universal numeric presets. They use the available settings and describe when each trade-off makes sense.

How to test a setting without fooling yourself
Change one category at a time. If you alter gamma, color intensity, graphics quality, and interaction behavior together, you cannot tell which change solved or created a problem.
- Record the baseline: Note your current graphics option, gamma position, color setting, and role-specific interaction behavior.
- Choose a single test: For example, raise gamma slightly or move from Low to the next graphics option.
- Check contrasting scenes: Use a dark interior, a shaded outdoor area, and a bright open area.
- Check information cues: Look for scratch marks, generators, hooks, and other red-coded elements while moving.
- Check responsiveness: Perform normal movement and a chase; look for recurring hitching or input delay.
- Check the relevant role: Survivor settings need Survivor testing, and Killer settings need Killer testing.
- Keep or revert: Retain the change only if it improves the target problem without creating a larger one.
Repeat the process after a major patch or when changing monitor, television, HDR mode, resolution, or room lighting. A setting can be correct for one display chain and wrong for another.
Common mistakes and recovery steps
Raising gamma until every map looks gray
This usually trades one unreadable area for lost contrast everywhere else. Return gamma toward its previous value, verify the display’s HDR and black-level configuration, and check whether the dark area is map-specific or bug-related.
Using Low Quality solely because it sounds faster
Low Quality can be associated with a shadow artifact, so compare visual clarity as well as frame pacing. If shadows become harder to interpret, use the next stable quality option.

Best Value
Changing color settings without checking red information
A filter should be judged by scratch marks, generators, hooks, and other red cues during movement. If ordinary colors become distracting or red cues still disappear, adjust the type or intensity and test again.
Blaming every dark scene on the display
Some excessive-darkness problems have been addressed as game or map issues. If only one location is affected, gather reproducible details and look for a game fix before making extreme global changes.
Recommended decision checklist
- Can you read dark areas while retaining texture on bright surfaces?
- Can you identify red-coded information in both dark and bright environments?
- Does your graphics option avoid recurring stutter, input delay, and visible artifacts?
- Have you tested the setting in an actual Trial rather than only in menus?
- Are Survivor and Killer Interaction Behavior values configured separately?
- Does Toggle reduce holding fatigue without causing accidental interactions?
- Does Run to Cancel match your movement habits, or does it cancel actions unintentionally?
- Did you retest after changing HDR, display hardware, room lighting, or the game version?
Frequently asked questions
What is the best gamma value for Dead by Daylight?
There is no official universal numeric value. Adjust Brightness/Gamma until dark details are readable while bright surfaces retain detail, then validate the result in a Trial on your display.
Can I make Dead by Daylight brighter on a console?
Yes. The official gamma adjustment was introduced across all platforms. Use the Graphics or Video settings, while remembering that console display and HDR configuration still affect the result.
Will lowering graphics quality always improve visibility?
No. Lower quality can improve stability, but developer notes document a shadow artifact on Low Quality, and presets can change readability as well as speed. Choose the highest option that is stable and visually clear for your system.
Should Survivor and Killer use the same interaction setting?
Not necessarily. Interaction Behavior is configurable separately, so choose Hold, Toggle, and, where appropriate, Run to Cancel for each role’s actions and your own comfort.
Why is one map still extremely dark after I raise gamma?
Some darkness issues have been identified as game or map problems. Check whether other maps are normal and look for a patch or developer note before increasing gamma so far that every other environment loses contrast.
