Microsoft Purview is the strongest native starting point for Microsoft 365, Google Workspace DLP for Gemini is the natural choice for Google organizations, Netskope One DLP fits broad multi-cloud SaaS monitoring, and Nightfall Firewall for AI is designed for API-driven or custom workflows. The important qualification is that prompt text and file uploads are separate control problems. A product may inspect one without reliably inspecting the other, so verify both before buying or deploying.
This guide compares where each product enforces policy, which AI interactions it can inspect, how it handles clipboard and file exfiltration, what deployment work is involved, and where its documented scope stops. Official documentation describes capabilities, not independent accuracy, false-positive rates, or total cost, so the comparisons below do not claim a numerical performance ranking.

Why monitoring AI prompts requires more than ordinary file DLP
Generative-AI usage creates at least two data paths. A user can paste a paragraph, source-code fragment, database record, or credential directly into a prompt. The same user can attach a document, spreadsheet, image, or export from a business system. Prompt inspection and upload inspection may occur at different enforcement points, use different classifiers, and produce different audit records.

Clipboard controls are another distinct path. A user may copy sensitive content from a managed application and paste it into a browser prompt without creating a file event. Conversely, an employee may upload a file through a browser or synchronize it through a cloud-storage client. A useful policy therefore states exactly what is covered: typed text, pasted text, linked resources, files, clipboard operations, browser destinations, API calls, and cloud-sync uploads.

Inspection location also determines what a tool can see. Endpoint controls can act before data leaves a managed device. Browser controls can inspect a prompt in real time. Network or SaaS controls can cover traffic from many applications, but encrypted or unmanaged paths may require additional configuration. APIs can protect custom applications and data pipelines, although engineering teams must place the scan call at the right point in the workflow.
Microsoft Purview for Microsoft 365 environments
What it can monitor
Microsoft documents Purview auditing for AI interactions, including prompts and responses, and describes retention, eDiscovery, communication-compliance, and DLP controls that can use those records. This makes Purview more than a blocking product: investigators can connect an AI interaction with the user, device, policy decision, and subsequent compliance work.
Microsoft’s Endpoint Data Loss Prevention guidance states: Use Microsoft Purview Endpoint Data Loss Prevention (DLP) to block pasting and uploading of sensitive information to AI apps. Endpoint DLP monitors activity on managed devices and can block a sensitive paste to a browser, an upload to a cloud service, or a copy operation for AI application websites.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteEdge Browser Data Security adds a browser-level control. Microsoft says it can inspect text typed or pasted into prompts in real time before submission for consumer ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek, and Google Gemini. That distinction matters: endpoint rules can govern device actions, while the browser feature evaluates the content of the prompt itself.
Deployment path
- Inventory devices and browsers. Identify which Windows endpoints are managed, which users access AI services through Edge, and whether other browsers or unmanaged devices are in scope.
- Define sensitive information types. Map the policy to the information you actually need to protect, such as customer identifiers, regulated records, credentials, source code, acquisition material, or confidential contracts.
- Start in audit mode. Observe prompt, paste, clipboard, and upload events before blocking. Use the audit trail to find legitimate workflows that would otherwise be interrupted.
- Enable Endpoint DLP actions. Apply graduated actions for browser paste, cloud upload, clipboard copy, and other exfiltration routes. Use user notifications and business justification where your policy permits exceptions.
- Configure Edge Browser Data Security. Add the AI destinations and prompt inspection rules relevant to your organization, then test typed and pasted content separately.
- Connect investigation workflows. Confirm that alerts, audit events, retention, eDiscovery, and communication-compliance processes are accessible to the teams that will respond.
- Expand coverage deliberately. Reassess non-Edge browsers, personal devices, virtual desktops, mobile access, and AI features embedded in other applications instead of assuming the initial policy covers them.
Best fit and limitations
Purview is the most coherent first option when your organization already operates Microsoft 365, manages Windows endpoints, and can standardize on Edge for protected workflows. Licensing and exact feature availability depend on the tenant and purchased plan; Microsoft’s capability description does not provide a universal price or an independent effectiveness score. Treat browser and device prerequisites as procurement requirements, not implementation details to solve later.
Google Workspace DLP for Gemini
What the Gemini rule evaluates
Google documents that DLP for Gemini scans user-entered text, direct-linked sources, and Workspace data that Gemini finds for all Gemini interactions, including Workspace Studio flows. Administrators can configure rules to block data access or audit the event without blocking it.
The documented restriction is focused on Google Drive resources and specified Gemini services. Google lists the Gemini app, Gemini in Workspace, Gemini Notebook, Personal Intelligence in Workspace, and Workspace Studio in that scope. The same documentation says Gemini Enterprise and Gemini in Chrome are not subject to those Drive access restrictions under the Gemini DLP rule. Do not interpret a Gemini DLP policy as universal coverage of every Google or third-party AI surface.

- Classify Drive data. Identify labels, organizational units, shared drives, and sensitive-information rules that should govern Gemini access.
- Choose audit or block first. Audit-only mode reveals which prompts and linked resources would trigger a policy. Blocking is appropriate for clearly restricted data, while lower-confidence detections may need monitoring and user education.
- Test each interaction type. Use a prompt containing sensitive text, a prompt that links directly to a restricted file, and a request that causes Gemini to retrieve Workspace data. These are separate test cases.
- Review excluded services. Check whether users rely on Gemini Enterprise, Gemini in Chrome, or another AI service that falls outside the documented Drive restriction. Add a complementary endpoint, browser, SaaS, or API control where necessary.
- Operationalize audit records. Decide who reviews blocked access and audit events, how long records are retained, and how a legitimate user requests an exception.
Best fit and limitations
Google Workspace DLP for Gemini is the natural native control for organizations whose sensitive content lives in Drive and whose principal AI use is Gemini. Its strength is context: the rule can consider the prompt, directly linked sources, and Workspace data Gemini uses. Its limitation is scope. The documented Drive restriction is not a blanket control for every Gemini product or every external AI website, so broader use cases need another enforcement layer.
Netskope One DLP for multi-cloud SaaS coverage
What it contributes
Netskope says its DLP inspects sanctioned and unsanctioned cloud services and logs incidents when policies are violated. Incident records include the object, application, site, exposure, last action, status, severity, and timestamp. Those fields are useful when a security operations team must determine what left the organization, where it went, which policy fired, and whether the action was blocked or merely recorded.
Netskope’s documentation for integration with Microsoft Purview describes extending visibility and control to AI interactions and uploads to unauthorized cloud storage, public email, and form services. This is relevant when users move between approved copilots, consumer AI sites, file-sharing services, and browser-based forms rather than staying inside one productivity suite.

- EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.
Deployment considerations
- Map the application estate. List approved AI services, consumer AI sites, cloud drives, public email, and form destinations. Separate sanctioned applications from unsanctioned ones so policy intent is explicit.
- Choose the traffic path. Determine whether enforcement will rely on endpoint agents, inline cloud controls, API integrations, or a combination. Coverage depends on how traffic reaches the service.
- Build destination-aware rules. A policy may allow a low-risk prompt to an approved service while blocking the same sensitive object uploaded to an unsanctioned site.
- Use incident context. Tune severity and response around the object, application, exposure, action, and timestamp fields rather than treating every alert as identical.
- Validate exceptions. Test service accounts, browser extensions, personal devices, encrypted paths, and newly adopted AI applications before declaring the control complete.
Best fit and limitations
Netskope is a strong candidate for a multi-cloud enterprise that wants one operational view across many SaaS destinations. It is less of a turnkey answer for a single-suite organization that only needs native controls. Confirm which applications, traffic paths, and integrations are available in your specific tenant; the published capability description does not establish universal coverage or a comparative detection rate.
Nightfall Firewall for AI for API and custom workflows
Scanning arbitrary text and files
Nightfall documents a Firewall for AI DLP API that scans arbitrary text with configured detectors. It also supports file-upload sessions for custom applications, retrieval-augmented-generation data, analytics stores, pipelines, and SaaS products that are not otherwise supported. This model lets an engineering team place inspection directly in an application workflow instead of waiting for a browser or network control to recognize the destination.
The API approach is useful when an internal assistant, support tool, data notebook, or RAG pipeline accepts user prompts and uploaded context. The application can submit content for inspection, receive a policy decision, and then permit, redact, quarantine, or reject the request according to its own user experience.
Endpoint exfiltration controls
Nightfall’s endpoint exfiltration documentation lists clipboard paste and cloud-sync uploads as monitorable events. Policies can monitor uploads to every cloud-sync storage application or to selected applications. That provides a second layer for organizations whose custom API controls do not cover ordinary desktop behavior.
Deployment considerations
- Define detectors. Specify the sensitive-information patterns, dictionaries, classifiers, and confidence thresholds that the API should apply.
- Place the scan before persistence or transmission. Inspect prompt text before the model call and inspect files before they enter a RAG index, analytics store, pipeline, or external service.
- Design the response contract. Decide whether a match blocks the request, removes the sensitive span, routes it for approval, or creates an alert while allowing the action.
- Protect upload sessions. Test large files, partial uploads, retries, unsupported formats, and users who abandon an upload halfway through.
- Add endpoint policies where needed. Monitor clipboard paste and cloud-sync uploads on supported endpoint platforms to cover data paths outside the custom application.
- Check operational limits. Verify API quotas, latency expectations, supported endpoint platforms, detector maintenance, and integration ownership before rollout.
Best fit and limitations
Nightfall fits engineering-led programs that need custom detectors, API inspection, or protection for unsupported SaaS and data pipelines. It requires more implementation work than a suite-native policy. The documentation describes the available interfaces and events but does not provide an independent benchmark for accuracy, latency, or cost.

How to choose without creating blind spots
Choose by data location first
If most sensitive information is in Microsoft 365 and users work on managed Windows devices, begin with Purview and verify Edge coverage. If it is in Google Drive and users mainly use Gemini, begin with Google’s native DLP rule. If users move data among many cloud services, prioritize a control that can see sanctioned and unsanctioned destinations. If prompts and files flow through software you build, put an API inspection point in that software.
Then map the user action
- Typing or pasting a prompt: require documented prompt-text inspection, not merely file scanning.
- Attaching a document: require upload inspection and a policy decision before transmission.
- Copying from a business system: require clipboard or endpoint controls.
- Linking a cloud document: require resource-aware access control, because the model may retrieve the content after the initial prompt.
- Sending data through an internal AI app: require an API or application-level scan before the model call and before storage.
- Using a personal or unsanctioned service: require SaaS, browser, network, or endpoint visibility that covers destinations outside the approved catalog.
Match enforcement to your response tolerance
Audit-only policies are useful for discovering real behavior and tuning detectors. Blocking is appropriate for clearly restricted data, such as credentials or regulated identifiers, but can disrupt legitimate work if classifications are broad. A staged policy can audit first, notify users for medium-confidence matches, require justification for selected cases, and block high-confidence exfiltration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical rollout plan
- Write the data policy in plain language. Name the data classes, approved AI services, prohibited destinations, exception owners, and retention period for events.
- Build a coverage matrix. Put prompt text, pasted text, linked resources, file uploads, clipboard, cloud-sync, browser, API, unmanaged device, and mobile access in separate rows. Mark which control covers each one.
- Run representative tests. Use synthetic records and harmless sample documents that resemble real confidential data. Test allowed, blocked, and near-match cases.
- Measure operational impact. Record alert volume, user notifications, blocked actions, exception requests, and time to investigate. None of the cited vendor documents supplies an independent accuracy or false-positive baseline, so your pilot data is essential for tuning.
- Train users at the point of failure. Explain why a prompt or upload was stopped, what approved workflow to use, and how to request an exception. Generic annual training will not address a real-time browser block.
- Expand to unsanctioned paths. Review personal browsers, consumer AI sites, public email, form services, cloud-sync clients, and copied text. Add controls rather than assuming the approved application policy follows the data everywhere.
- Review after product changes. AI services, browser features, connectors, and tenant licensing change frequently. Re-test after a new model, browser release, integration, or policy-plan change.
Common failure modes and fixes
Only files are blocked, while prompt text leaves freely
This occurs when an organization enables traditional upload DLP but does not configure browser or API prompt inspection. Add a prompt-specific control and test typed and pasted text independently.
Prompts are inspected, but linked documents are not governed
A prompt can contain no sensitive text while directing the model to a restricted document. Use resource-aware Gemini or application permissions where available, and test direct links as a separate case.

Users bypass a browser rule with clipboard, sync, or screenshots
Use endpoint controls for clipboard and cloud-sync events, and include alternative exfiltration paths in the coverage matrix. No single prompt rule can represent every way data leaves a device.
Blocking creates too many false positives
Start with audit mode, narrow sensitive-information types, separate high-confidence identifiers from broad keywords, and introduce user justification or approval for lower-risk matches. Tune with representative synthetic data before expanding to the whole organization.
Alerts lack enough context to investigate
Ensure records identify the user, device or application, destination, object, action, severity, and timestamp. Netskope explicitly documents these incident fields; other products may expose comparable context through their audit and compliance records, but you should verify the exact fields in your tenant.
Licensing, costs, and what is not established
The cited official documentation does not publish comparable prices for these products, nor does it provide independent figures for detection accuracy, false-positive rates, breach reduction, or total cost of ownership. Licensing can vary by tenant edition, endpoint coverage, browser features, API volume, integrations, and support tier. Obtain a tenant-specific quote and confirm which capabilities are included rather than comparing list prices from unrelated editions.
During procurement, ask for a written answer to five questions: which AI applications are covered; whether typed and pasted prompt text are both inspected; whether file contents are scanned before upload; which endpoint platforms and browsers are supported; and how audit events can be exported to your investigation system. For API products, add quota, latency, file-size, format, and failure-handling requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one DLP product monitor ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot equally?
Not automatically. Coverage depends on the product’s enforcement point, browser or endpoint support, application integrations, and tenant configuration. Test each service and each action—typed prompt, pasted prompt, linked resource, and file upload—separately.
Should an organization block every AI prompt containing confidential data?
Use a risk-based policy. Block high-confidence secrets and regulated identifiers, while auditing or requiring justification for lower-confidence matches after testing business impact.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is an AI DLP API useful if employees also use browser-based AI sites?
Yes, but it covers the application workflow where it is integrated. Browser, endpoint, SaaS, or network controls are still needed for separate consumer or unsanctioned destinations.
What should a pilot measure before production rollout?
Measure covered actions, blocked events, audit volume, user disruption, exception requests, investigation time, and bypass paths. Use representative synthetic data because the cited documentation does not provide independent accuracy or false-positive benchmarks.
The Bottom Line
Choose Microsoft Purview for a managed Microsoft 365 and Edge environment, Google Workspace DLP for Gemini when Drive governance is the priority, Netskope One DLP for broad multi-cloud SaaS visibility, and Nightfall Firewall for AI when APIs and custom workflows are central. Whichever you select, validate prompt text and file uploads as separate controls before treating your AI data-loss policy as complete.
