1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you want one dark-fantasy action RPG to play while you wait, choose ELDEN RING for the broadest mix of open-world exploration, dungeons, and boss battles. Choose Lords of the Fallen (2023) if an explicitly grim setting and exploration across two parallel realms matter more. For a newer option, The Blood of Dawnwalker was released on 3 September 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
None is a direct substitute for At Fate’s End, which is planned for 2027 and centers on family conflict, narrative puzzles, and duels with the protagonist’s siblings. Its developer also says a Steam demo is available and estimates that it takes about 90 minutes to complete.

What makes a good game to play before At Fate’s End?
The best fit depends on which part of the upcoming game interests you. Thunder Lotus describes At Fate’s End as an action-adventure starring Shan, a young heiress who wields the God Sword Aesus. Its announced ingredients include a hand-crafted fantasy world, combat, narrative puzzles, and emotional duels with her estranged siblings. That points toward fantasy combat and a story shaped by family relationships—not necessarily the huge open worlds or Soulslike progression associated with the recommendations below.
The developer lists the game as single-player and plans to release it in 2027 on Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox, and Xbox Game Pass. The current demo is on Steam; the FAQ estimates about 90 minutes to finish it. Thunder Lotus says development is active, so details may change. It has not confirmed a console demo or whether demo progress will carry into the full game. Read the developer’s FAQ for those details.

ELDEN RING: choose it for exploration and scale
Bandai Namco describes ELDEN RING as an action RPG set in an authentic dark-fantasy world, and highlights treacherous dungeons and boss battles. It is the strongest all-around pick if you want a substantial world to roam alongside demanding-looking combat encounters, rather than a closer match for At Fate’s End’s family drama.

Lords of the Fallen (2023): choose it for two realms and a grim tone
The official game page identifies Lords of the Fallen as a dark-fantasy action RPG available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. Its central exploration hook is moving between two parallel realms: the living and the dead. The developer also describes fast, challenging tactical combat, a large selection of weapons and magic, and optional online co-op.
Rank #3
- ENTER THE WORLD OF SKYRIM: Experience the legendary open-world RPG as a tabletop adventure, exploring Tamriel through branching quests, iconic factions, and rich Elder Scrolls lore.
- COOPERATIVE OR SOLO PLAY: Designed for 1–4 players, allowing you to adventure solo or team up to face dragons, uncover conspiracies, and shape the fate of Skyrim together.
- OPEN-ENDED QUEST SYSTEM: Choose how you approach each mission—diplomacy, stealth, or combat—as your decisions permanently impact the story and the world around you.
- DEEP CHARACTER PROGRESSION: Build unique heroes with evolving skills, gear, and abilities inspired by the video game’s iconic progression systems.
- HIGH REPLAYABILITY: Modular scenarios, multiple quest paths, and varied character builds ensure every campaign feels fresh and every journey through Skyrim is different.
This is the better fit if you want an explicitly grim setting and combat-led exploration. Its parallel-world premise is a useful point of distinction from ELDEN RING, but it should not be mistaken for a close narrative match to At Fate’s End’s duels between family members.
The Blood of Dawnwalker: a recently released alternative
Bandai Namco describes The Blood of Dawnwalker as an open-world dark-fantasy action RPG set in 14th-century Europe. Its protagonist, Coen, is human by day and vampire by night; the publisher says choices and the timing of quests shape the world and story. The official release notice lists 3 September 2026 as its release date on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

- 🎲 FAST, REWARDING & ADDICTIVE GAMEPLAY – Constant upgrades and meaningful choices keep every turn exciting
- 🔁 HIGHLY REPLAYABLE WITH SCALABLE DIFFICULTY – New heroes, quests and challenges every time
That makes it a current option if you want a new open-world dark-fantasy setting and a story responsive to choices. The available description does not establish that its combat or narrative structure resembles At Fate’s End’s sibling duels, so treat it as an adjacent pick rather than a like-for-like alternative.
What about Lies of P?
Lies of P’s Steam listing is a possible secondary candidate for readers considering a stylized dark-fantasy game. The listing available for this comparison redirected to an age-check page, so its current platform list, physical editions, and detailed gameplay could not be verified here. Check an accessible official listing for the version and features you need before choosing it.
