What “co-op” means in Cyberpunk 2077
CD PROJEKT RED’s official Cyberpunk 2077 feature material describes a story-driven game centered on V, quests and gigs, skills, combat, and the Phantom Liberty expansion. It does not document a supported mode in which two or more players share a world, nor does it document an in-game voice channel. You therefore cannot invite a friend into your save, synchronize missions, or use a Cyberpunk 2077 party lobby in the retail game.

The practical setup for friends is co-op-style coordination: everyone plays their own session and talks through a separate voice service. You can compare builds, stream a mission, coordinate a challenge, or make the same choices together, but progress, enemies, loot, and quest state remain separate. Settings in this guide target that arrangement: stable frame times for play and a dependable microphone connection for conversation.
Official performance targets and what they mean
CD PROJEKT RED’s current PC requirements publish targets rather than a guarantee for every computer. The company notes that frame rate changes with hardware, software, graphics settings, and output resolution. Treat the figures below as starting points for choosing a preset, not as an independent benchmark.

Ray-traced modes use separate, heavier hardware tiers. Path Tracing, also called Overdrive, is intended as a premium image-quality mode, not as the sensible baseline for a smooth group session. A stable 60-FPS raster setup is more useful for voice-coordinated play than an attractive but inconsistent frame rate.
Prepare the PC before changing graphics options
Install the game on an SSD
Current PC support requires SSD storage. CD PROJEKT RED says SSDs provide faster loading, improved streaming, and better overall performance than hard disk drives. If you are buying or upgrading storage, an NVMe SSD is the preferred choice. The published ultra target specifies a 70 GB NVMe SSD; leave additional free space for patches, shader caches, and the operating system.
Match resolution to your actual goal
Choose the resolution you intend to use before judging performance. Output resolution directly affects rendering work, and changing from 1080p to 1440p or 2160p can move the bottleneck to the GPU even when every other setting is unchanged. Use the display’s native resolution when your hardware can sustain it; otherwise select a lower, consistent resolution rather than constantly changing it while testing.

Close avoidable background load
Before testing, close applications that capture video, compile shaders, synchronize large files, or run heavy browser workloads. Keep your voice application open, but disable unnecessary overlays and visual effects if they compete for GPU memory or CPU time. Restart after a major driver or game update so shader compilation and cache creation can complete cleanly.
A reliable settings workflow
- Start with the appropriate preset. If your PC is near the official recommended 1080p/60 hardware tier, select High. For minimum-tier or older hardware, select Low or Medium. Do not begin with Ultra or Overdrive and then attempt to rescue performance one option at a time.
- Turn ray tracing and path tracing off. Establish a consistent non-ray-traced frame time first. Ray tracing adds a large GPU workload, while path tracing is heavier still.
- Apply the game’s supported upscaling only when appropriate. Choose an upscaler your GPU and display support. Evaluate motion clarity, fine detail, and frame-time consistency rather than trusting an uncapped FPS number.
- Test a repeatable route. Walk or drive through the same busy district, enter a market, rotate the camera quickly, and engage in a short fight. Compare the worst moments, not only the quiet alley where the FPS counter looks high.
- Change one group of settings at a time. After each change, repeat the route. This identifies whether the limit is CPU-side simulation, GPU rendering, memory, or streaming.
- Set a frame-rate cap if needed. A cap just below the refresh rate can reduce oscillation and fan noise. A consistent 55–60 FPS usually feels better in voice-coordinated play than a counter that jumps between 45 and 90.
Settings that matter most for smooth frame times
Crowd Density: the first fix for busy-city stutter
Update 2.0 moved Crowd Density to the Graphics tab and made it independent of the main preset. That makes it the most useful first adjustment when performance worsens in crowded districts. Lower it one step, retest the same street, and continue only if the hitching remains. Crowd simulation is primarily a CPU-side workload, so lowering texture quality or other GPU-focused options will not address a CPU limit.
Resolution and upscaling: the main GPU levers
If the GPU is fully loaded while the CPU has headroom, reduce output resolution or use a supported upscaling mode. Inspect distant signs, hair, fences, and moving foliage for shimmering or softness. The best setting is the one that improves frame-time consistency without making the image distracting. Frame generation can increase displayed FPS on supported hardware, but it does not remove the underlying simulation workload; judge input response and pacing as well as the counter.

Ray tracing and Path Tracing/Overdrive
Leave both disabled until raster performance is stable. Ray-traced reflections, lighting, and shadows can consume substantial GPU capacity. Path Tracing/Overdrive raises image quality further and has its own high hardware requirements. If you later enable ray tracing, do so after setting a cap and retesting the same route; if busy-area stutter appears, return to raster settings before lowering unrelated options.
Textures, shadows, volumetrics, and reflections
Texture quality mainly affects VRAM use and image detail. If you see texture pop-in or hitching while turning the camera, lower textures one step and verify that the game is not exhausting video memory. Shadow, volumetric, and reflection options are generally more GPU-sensitive. Lower the most expensive group only after resolution and upscaling choices are settled. Keep a change log so you know which option produced a measurable improvement.
Motion blur and other preference settings
Motion blur does not solve a hardware bottleneck. Disable it if blur makes camera movement uncomfortable, or retain it if you prefer the cinematic look. The same principle applies to film grain and chromatic aberration: treat them as visibility preferences, not performance cures.

Diagnose the bottleneck instead of guessing
Signs of a CPU or crowd-simulation limit
- Frame time worsens mainly in dense markets, traffic, or pedestrian-heavy streets.
- Lowering resolution produces little improvement.
- One or more CPU threads remain heavily loaded while total GPU utilization falls.
- Lowering Crowd Density improves the hitching.
Use Crowd Density first, then reduce other simulation-heavy options if available. Keep the resolution you want if the GPU is not the limiting component.
Signs of a GPU limit
- GPU utilization remains near maximum during the slowest scenes.
- Lowering resolution or enabling a supported upscaler produces a clear improvement.
- Ray tracing causes a large performance drop compared with the same scene in raster mode.
Reduce resolution, select a balanced upscaling mode, or disable ray tracing. Do not expect a microphone or voice application change to fix a GPU-bound frame rate.
Signs of streaming, storage, or memory pressure
- Short hitches occur while driving quickly into a new area.
- Textures appear late or briefly become blurry.
- The game is installed on an HDD or the SSD is nearly full.
- Background applications consume substantial RAM or VRAM.
Move the installation to an SSD, preferably NVMe for a new upgrade, free space, close competing workloads, and allow shader compilation to finish after updates. Re-test only after the system has settled.

How to set up voice chat for group sessions
Since Cyberpunk 2077 does not document an in-game voice channel, use a platform party-chat feature or a desktop voice application while each player runs their own session. Create one private room, ask everyone to select the correct microphone, and perform a short test before launching the game.
Headset and microphone choices
- A wired headset avoids battery drain and most wireless interference.
- A low-latency USB headset is a practical alternative when your computer lacks a clean analog input.
- Position the microphone slightly to the side of your mouth, and use a pop filter or the supplied windscreen if plosives are loud.
- Prefer a closed-back headset in a noisy room so the microphone does not pick up game audio.
Dolby Atmos is optional for ordinary voice chat. CD PROJEKT RED’s requirements page says a PC audio solution containing Dolby Atmos is required for a Dolby Atmos listening experience; that requirement does not make Atmos necessary for speaking to friends.
Voice settings that prevent common problems
- Select the intended microphone and headset explicitly in the voice application instead of leaving both on “Default” when several devices are connected.
- Use push-to-talk if keyboard noise, fans, or room noise trigger the microphone. Choose a key that does not conflict with movement or combat.
- If using voice activation, raise the threshold until idle breathing and keyboard clicks stop opening the channel.
- Enable echo cancellation and noise suppression only if they improve clarity; aggressive suppression can clip quiet speech.
- Ask one person to speak while another checks volume, distortion, and delay. Adjust the input level before starting a mission.
Can friends play together through REDmod or community projects?
REDmod is CD PROJEKT RED’s official tool for creating and loading Cyberpunk 2077 modifications. Its compatibility is maintained alongside game updates, but it is a mod-creation and mod-loading system, not proof of an officially supported multiplayer mode.

Do not assume synchronized quests, stable player movement, integrated voice chat, or compatibility with every update. Keep an unmodified installation or a separate game profile so an experiment does not disrupt your ordinary single-player saves.
Troubleshooting checklist
Stutter remains after lowering Crowd Density
- Confirm the game is on an SSD and that the drive has free space.
- Disable ray tracing and path tracing, then retest.
- Check whether the GPU is saturated; if so, reduce resolution or use supported upscaling.
- If GPU load is low in crowded scenes, reduce other CPU-heavy background activity and keep Crowd Density lower.
- Use a frame-rate cap to prevent large swings while you identify the cause.
Voice sounds muffled, robotic, or delayed
- Verify the correct input and output devices in the voice application.
- Lower microphone gain if the signal clips; increase it if normal speech is barely detected.
- Disable duplicate microphone processing in both the operating system and the voice application.
- Try a wired connection or a USB headset if wireless interference is audible.
- Close overlays or recording tools that consume CPU time or alter the selected audio device.
Performance changed after an update
Updates can alter graphics defaults, shader caches, mod compatibility, and requirements. Re-check the preset, Crowd Density, ray-tracing state, resolution, and upscaling mode. If a mod is installed, test once with the supported retail configuration before attributing the change to hardware.
A repeatable routine for every player
- Install or move Cyberpunk 2077 to an SSD; use NVMe when upgrading storage.
- Choose the display resolution and frame-rate goal you can maintain.
- Start at Low, Medium, or High according to how close your hardware is to the official target tiers.
- Keep ray tracing and Path Tracing/Overdrive disabled during baseline testing.
- Drive through a crowded district and record the worst frame-time behavior.
- Lower Crowd Density first for city-center CPU dips; lower resolution or upscale for GPU dips.
- Cap the frame rate if pacing fluctuates.
- Join the external voice room, test microphone levels, and then launch your separate sessions.
This approach gives friends a predictable way to play alongside one another without implying that Cyberpunk 2077 contains a co-op feature it does not document.
