Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe best starting point for Cyberpunk 2077 on Steam Deck is the official Steam Deck preset at 1280×800, with AMD FSR 2.1 set to Balanced, High textures, Low crowd density, ray tracing off and frame generation off. This combination generally targets about 30–35 FPS with responsive controls. PCGamesN’s testing of that profile found roughly 35 FPS, occasional spikes into the mid-40s and rare drops below 30 FPS.
If you prefer a sharper image and can accept larger drops in Phantom Liberty’s Dogtown, use FSR 2.1 Quality and the tested 40-FPS-oriented settings below. Dogtown can fall into the low 30s and reach 28 FPS even with that profile, so a locked 30 FPS target is often more consistent than pursuing 40 FPS everywhere.

Quick answer: choose one of these two profiles
There is no single setting combination that makes every area of Night City run at the same speed. The base game is lighter than the open areas of Dogtown, and a profile that feels smooth in most missions can still dip during dense crowds, heavy weather or large firefights. Start with the profile that matches your priority, then make only one change at a time.
| Profile | Target | Upscaling | Image quality | Heavy-area behavior | Input response |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Balanced performance | About 30–35 FPS | FSR 2.1 Balanced | Softer than Quality, but the best broad performance target | Usually playable; occasional dips below 30 FPS | Frame generation off for direct response |
| Sharper 40-FPS profile | 40 FPS in much of the base game | FSR 2.1 Quality with 0.50 sharpening | Sharper image and finer detail | Dogtown can fall to the low 30s and as low as 28 FPS | Frame generation off |
Both profiles use 1280×800, the Steam Deck panel’s native resolution. Neither profile uses ray tracing. Ray-traced lighting is expensive enough that it works against an FPS-first goal on this hardware.

Before changing settings: check the Steam Deck requirements
Install the game on an SSD
CD PROJEKT RED changed the PC requirements with Update 2.0 and stated that running Cyberpunk 2077 on an SSD is now a requirement on Steam Deck. Use the Deck’s internal SSD or a Steam Deck-compatible SSD rather than planning around slower storage. This is a game requirement, not merely an optional loading-time tweak.
Use the current game and SteamOS installation
CD PROJEKT RED confirmed Steam Deck compatibility in February 2023 and later published an updated Steam Deck graphics profile with improved frame-rate stability in Update 2.0. Keep the game updated so the in-game profile and current compatibility work are available. Menu labels can change slightly after patches, but the relevant controls remain in the Graphics section.
Reset to a known baseline
Custom changes from an earlier experiment can make comparisons unreliable. In Cyberpunk 2077, open Settings, select Graphics, apply the Steam Deck quick preset, and then set the profile you want below. Restart the game if it asks you to do so after a graphics change.
Recommended 30–35 FPS profile
This is the safest first setup when your priority is a stable, responsive game rather than maximum sharpness.
- Open Settings → Graphics.
- Set the display resolution to 1280×800.
- Choose the Steam Deck quick preset.
- Set Resolution Scaling to AMD FSR 2.1.
- Set FSR Super Resolution to Balanced.
- Set Texture Quality to High.
- Set Crowd Density to Low.
- Set Ray Tracing to Off.
- Set Frame Generation to Off.
PCGamesN reported about 35 FPS with this general setup, with occasional mid-40s readings and rare dips below 30 FPS. Treat those figures as an observed result for that testing setup, not a guarantee for every scene, patch or Steam Deck unit.

Why keep textures High?
Texture quality primarily affects the detail stored in surfaces and the memory needed to display them. The supplied Steam Deck profile keeps textures at High while reducing settings that more directly affect frame time. Lower textures only if you encounter texture-streaming problems, visible asset corruption or a memory-related issue; lowering them first is not the most efficient route to higher FPS for this profile.
Why lower crowd density?
Crowd density controls how many pedestrians and related background actors the game must simulate and draw. Busy streets can become CPU-limited, so Low crowd density helps frame-time consistency in places where reducing image effects alone may not help. It also makes the city look less populated, which is the main visual trade-off.
Sharper 40-FPS-oriented profile
SteamDeckHQ tested the following combination as a 40-FPS target. It is sharper than the Balanced profile because it uses FSR 2.1 Quality, but it has a lower worst-case result in Dogtown. Apply these values individually after selecting the Steam Deck preset.
| Setting | Value | What the change prioritizes |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 1280×800 | Native panel output |
| Resolution Scaling | AMD FSR 2.1 | Upscaled rendering for performance |
| FSR Super Resolution | Quality | Sharper reconstruction than Balanced |
| FSR sharpening | 0.50 | Moderate edge/detail sharpening |
| Ray tracing | Off | Avoids the largest rendering cost |
| Crowd density | Low | Reduces busy-scene CPU work |
| Contact shadows | On | Retains local grounding shadows |
| Improved facial lighting geometry | On | Preserves character-face lighting detail |
| Anisotropy | 8x | Clearer surfaces viewed at an angle |
| Local shadow mesh quality | Medium | Moderate local-shadow geometry |
| Local shadow quality | Medium | Moderate local-shadow detail |
| Cascaded shadows range | Low | Reduces distant shadow workload |
| Distant shadows resolution | Low | Reduces far-away shadow detail |
| Volumetric fog resolution | Medium | Balances atmospheric quality and cost |
| Volumetric clouds quality | Off | Removes a costly atmospheric effect |
| Dynamic decals | Medium | Retains moderate bullet, impact and surface markings |
| Screen-space reflections quality | Medium | Moderate reflection detail |
| Subsurface scattering quality | Medium | Moderate skin and translucent-material lighting |
| Ambient occlusion | Low | Reduces contact-darkening calculations |
| Color precision | Medium | Moderate color-processing precision |
| Mirror quality | Low | Reduces the cost of mirror views |
| Level of detail | Medium | Moderate geometry and object-detail distance |
| Frame Generation | Off | Native rendered frames and lower latency |
SteamDeckHQ reported mostly smooth 40 FPS in the base game with these settings. The same review found that open Dogtown can run in the low 30s and reach 28 FPS. That result is why a 40-FPS cap should be treated as a base-game target rather than a promise for the whole map.
FSR Quality versus Balanced
FSR Super Resolution determines how aggressively the game renders below the output resolution before reconstructing the final image. Balanced gives the GPU more performance headroom and is the better default when your priority is maintaining a playable rate through varied scenes. Quality preserves more source detail and usually looks cleaner on fine geometry, signs and distant objects, but leaves less headroom for demanding areas.

| Choose | When it makes sense | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| FSR 2.1 Balanced | You want the broadest performance target and fewer severe drops | Softer image, especially in motion or on fine distant detail |
| FSR 2.1 Quality | You can accept lower worst-case FPS for a sharper picture | Dogtown and other heavy scenes have less performance headroom |
Change only the FSR mode first when comparing image quality. Keep resolution, crowd density and the other settings unchanged so you can tell whether the visual improvement is worth the frame-time cost on your Deck.

Frame generation: why it stays off for an FPS-first setup
Cyberpunk 2077 supports both FSR 2.1 and FSR 3 options, allowing players to choose between image quality and performance features. CD PROJEKT RED recommends reaching at least a 60 FPS baseline before enabling FSR 3 frame generation. A Steam Deck profile that renders around 30–40 FPS does not meet that recommendation.
Frame generation inserts synthetic frames between traditionally rendered frames. It can make a counter appear higher, but it does not provide the same underlying input cadence as raising the genuinely rendered frame rate. CD PROJEKT RED’s 60-FPS guidance is intended to reduce artifacts and frame-pacing problems. PCGamesN also reported noticeable input lag from frame generation on Deck. For aiming, driving and menu response, leave it off unless you have a specific reason to test it and accept those limitations.
Ray tracing: the easy setting to rule out
Ray tracing adds substantially more lighting work. Both recommended profiles leave it off because the goal is higher and more consistent FPS on Steam Deck. If you turn it on for screenshots or a short visual test, return it to Off before judging the performance of the normal profile; otherwise you are comparing different rendering workloads.

- Confirm the FSR mode. Use Balanced for performance or Quality for sharpness. Do not change several unrelated settings at the same time.
- Keep crowd density Low. Test a crowded market, a major intersection and a combat encounter. If those scenes remain slow, the limitation may be simulation or CPU-side work rather than a single visual effect.
- Reduce shadow settings. Cascaded shadows, distant shadows, local shadow mesh and local shadow quality can be lowered before touching textures. The 40-FPS profile already uses Low for cascaded and distant shadows and Medium for local shadow options.
- Reduce volumetrics. Volumetric fog at Medium and volumetric clouds Off are the sharper-profile values. Lowering fog further can help in atmospheric scenes, while clouds Off avoids spending performance on a feature that is often less important during combat.
- Reduce reflections and ambient occlusion. Screen-space reflections at Medium and ambient occlusion at Low preserve some depth and reflections without using the higher presets.
- Lower mirrors and level of detail. Mirror Quality Low and Level of Detail Medium are useful compromises when interiors, reflective surfaces or busy city views cause spikes.
- Only then consider a lower output resolution. The recommended profiles keep 1280×800 because it is the native panel resolution. Dropping resolution can improve speed, but it also makes the entire image softer and is a larger visual compromise than lowering individual effects.
After every change, revisit the same route or save location for at least a few minutes. A single quiet street cannot reveal whether a setting helped in a crowd, during combat or in a weather-heavy scene.
Frame caps and choosing a realistic target
A cap can make uneven frame times feel more consistent, but it cannot create performance the hardware does not have. If the Balanced profile frequently sits around the mid-30s, a 30-FPS target is more realistic than chasing 40. With the Quality profile, 40 FPS may feel smooth in much of the base game, but Dogtown’s reported 28–low-30s behavior means a 30-FPS cap can be steadier across the full game.
Use the same cap while testing each profile. Avoid comparing one profile uncapped with another capped, because the frame counter and pacing will not describe the same workload. If a scene repeatedly falls below your cap, lower a setting that affects that scene or choose the lower target rather than relying on frame generation to hide the deficit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Dogtown runs worse than many Night City areas
Dogtown, introduced with Phantom Liberty, is a useful worst-case test because its open areas can combine long sightlines, dense geometry, crowds, effects and combat activity. SteamDeckHQ’s 40-FPS test found the base game mostly smooth but Dogtown in the low 30s and as low as 28 FPS. That difference does not mean your settings failed; it means the same average target is not equally realistic in every environment.

When entering Dogtown, judge consistency rather than the highest number shown in a quiet corridor. If you want a profile that behaves predictably there, use FSR Balanced and a 30-FPS target, keep crowd density Low, and retain the low shadow, cloud, reflection, ambient-occlusion, mirror and level-of-detail values listed above.

Common problems and fixes
The game looks blurry
Change FSR Super Resolution from Balanced to Quality and set sharpening to 0.50, as in the 40-FPS-oriented profile. If performance becomes inconsistent in heavy areas, return to Balanced and keep the lower-cost effects rather than immediately lowering the native output resolution.
The frame counter is high but controls feel delayed
Check that Frame Generation is Off. Synthetic frames can increase the displayed rate while adding latency, and PCGamesN reported noticeable input lag from frame generation on Deck. A lower but genuinely rendered frame rate is preferable for responsive aiming and driving.
Performance is acceptable in the city but poor in Dogtown
This is expected from the tested results. Use a 30-FPS target, switch from FSR Quality to Balanced, or lower volumetric, shadow, reflection, mirror and level-of-detail settings. Do not treat a 40-FPS reading in a light scene as evidence that every Dogtown area can hold 40.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChanging settings did not improve FPS
Return to the Steam Deck preset and verify that the change was applied in the Graphics menu. Test in a repeatable busy location, not only in a quiet room. If lowering visual effects has little impact, the scene may be limited by crowd simulation or another CPU-side workload; Low crowd density is the relevant setting to check.
The game is installed on a microSD card
Update 2.0 lists an SSD as a Steam Deck requirement for Cyberpunk 2077. Move the installation to the Deck’s internal SSD or another Steam Deck-compatible SSD before diagnosing graphics performance. Storage does not turn a 30-FPS scene into 60 FPS, but running below the stated storage requirement can undermine expected behavior.
A practical decision guide
- Want the simplest reliable setup? Apply the Steam Deck preset, FSR 2.1 Balanced, High textures, Low crowds, ray tracing Off and frame generation Off.
- Want a sharper image and mostly 40 FPS in the base game? Use FSR 2.1 Quality with 0.50 sharpening and the complete SteamDeckHQ values.
- Play Phantom Liberty mainly in Dogtown? Favor Balanced and a 30-FPS target because the tested Quality profile can reach 28 FPS there.
- Care most about control response? Keep frame generation Off, regardless of the number shown by an overlay.
- Need extra performance after choosing a profile? Lower shadows, volumetrics, reflections, ambient occlusion, mirrors and level of detail before reducing texture quality.
What the official compatibility information means
CD PROJEKT RED’s February 28, 2023 announcement confirmed Cyberpunk 2077 as Verified for Steam Deck Compatibility. Verification means the game meets Valve’s compatibility criteria; it is not a promise of a locked 40 or 60 FPS in every location. The company’s Update 2.0 notes also specifically mention an updated Steam Deck graphics profile for improved frame-rate stability and the SSD requirement. Those statements support using the official preset as the baseline while treating custom targets as compromises between image quality, latency and consistency.
