USDC is the stablecoin with the clearest first-party support across these products. The reviewed documentation does not establish equivalent USDT support, so an agent-payment design should not assume USDT parity. Your decision should be based on custody, network, spending controls, approval escalation, monitoring and recovery—not the token symbol alone.

What an autonomous agent wallet must do
An agent wallet is more than an address and a private key. It is the signing, policy and payment layer that lets software act without a person clicking “Confirm” for every request. A useful implementation must answer six questions:
#1 Best Overall
- Effortlessly build your crypto portfolio via the all in one Ledger Wallet app: buy, sell, send, receive, swap, stake and more across popular blockchains. 15,000+ coins & tokens in a single dashboard. Keep a close eye on the market. Compare service providers. Track performance. Get timely alerts. Build your portfolio with confidence.
- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Who controls the keys? A managed wallet can isolate keys from your application; a self-custodial wallet puts recovery and signing responsibility on you; an enterprise orchestrator may expose only short-lived payment instruments.
- What can the agent spend? Limits should cover both each transaction and an aggregate session or time period.
- Where can it spend? Allowlists and network restrictions reduce the chance that a prompt injection redirects funds.
- How is payment delivered? x402 turns an HTTP payment challenge into a machine-readable flow. Other systems may use payment sessions or ordinary token transfers.
- When must a human intervene? Large transfers, policy changes, unusual destinations and production-wallet changes need escalation.
- How do you investigate failure? You need transaction logs, policy decisions, screening results, nonce or session state and a way to revoke credentials.
These controls matter because an agent can be manipulated, call a faulty tool repeatedly or misunderstand a price. Autonomous signing should be narrow, observable and easy to stop.

Circle Agent Wallets: strongest documented USDC support
Circle defines an Agent Wallet as “a wallet type designed for AI agents to hold, trade, and bridge USDC across chains and pay for services autonomously within human-defined spending policies.” That definition directly matches an agent that must buy API calls, data or compute without a person approving each request.
What it supports
- USDC transfers and bridging between supported chains.
- Circle nanopayments and x402 payment flows.
- Arbitrum, Arc testnet, Avalanche, Base, Ethereum, Monad, OP Mainnet, Polygon PoS and Unichain.
The list mixes production networks with Arc testnet, so treat testnet funds and production funds differently in configuration and monitoring. A chain being listed does not mean every asset, contract or application on that chain is approved for your use.

Policies are defined by people and enforced by the wallet. Mainnet policy changes require email one-time-password verification, which creates a human checkpoint for a particularly sensitive operation. Set narrow destination, asset, network and amount rules before giving the agent a production credential. Keep policy administration separate from the runtime identity that signs ordinary payments.
Nanopayments
In a May 11, 2026 announcement, Circle said its Gateway-powered nanopayments enable gas-free USDC transfers as small as $0.000001 at machine speed and scale. That figure is a stated minimum transaction size, not a promise that every service or network will price requests at that amount. Confirm the applicable network, service and production availability before designing around micropayments.
Coinbase CDP Agentic Wallets: integrated funding and x402
Coinbase’s agentic wallet stack keeps keys isolated in its infrastructure and combines wallet operations with funding and payment tooling. It supports x402, agent skills, gasless Base trading and stablecoin onramp or payment workflows.
Controls that matter
- Per-session caps: limit what an agent can spend during one task or conversation.
- Per-transaction caps: stop a single erroneous or malicious call from consuming the wallet balance.
- KYT screening: screen transactions and destinations as part of the payment flow.
Gasless Base trading can reduce the need to pre-fund a separate gas balance for that workflow, but it does not make every action on every network gas-free. Keep network-specific gas requirements in your design and test failure handling when a transaction cannot be sponsored.
When to choose it
Choose this model when your team wants one developer workflow for wallet creation, funding, stablecoin payments and x402. It is less suitable if your policy requires the organization to hold and recover keys independently of the provider.
MetaMask Agent Wallet: self-custody with EVM breadth
MetaMask Agent Wallet is the self-custodial option in this comparison. At launch it targets EVM DeFi on Ethereum, Linea, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Optimism, Base, Polygon, BSC and Sei.

- This is what security feels like: Ledger touchscreen signers all come with a private, offline, PIN-protected backup, Ledger Recovery Key, to never lose access to your assets.
Security features
- Guard Mode: limits the wallet’s operating scope.
- Allowlists: restrict approved destinations or contracts.
- Transaction simulation: preview expected effects before signing.
- Blockaid scanning: scan transactions for malicious or deceptive behavior.
- 2FA escalation: require an additional human factor for sensitive actions.
Self-custody changes the recovery path. Your team must protect seed material or signing credentials, test recovery and decide who can rotate or revoke access. If the agent process loses its signing authority, the provider cannot restore a key that your organization failed to back up. Conversely, a compromised self-custodial key can authorize transactions until you revoke or move funds.
When to choose it
Use this model when direct control of keys and broad EVM access outweigh the operational burden of custody. It is a poor fit for teams that cannot maintain secure key storage, simulation checks, allowlist administration and incident response.
Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Payments: enterprise orchestration
AgentCore Payments is designed for agents operating in AWS workflows. It uses embedded wallet instruments through connectors and supports Coinbase CDP and Privy infrastructure. The payment layer can create sessions for APIs, MCP servers and web content and supports x402 and MPP flows.
Controls and credentials
- Session expiry: automatically ends an authorization window.
- Maximum spend amount and currency: constrain the value and denomination available to a session.
- IAM and JWT authorization: bind payment actions to AWS identities and signed application claims.
- AWS Secrets Manager: store connector credentials rather than placing them in prompts, source code or agent memory.
AWS documents separate payment instruments for separate networks. Design one instrument per network where required, rather than assuming a single wallet balance is universally spendable. This is an operational distinction that affects funding, reconciliation and failover.
When to choose it
Choose AgentCore Payments when identity, secrets, logging and deployment already live in AWS and you want payment authorization to follow those controls. Teams running agents outside AWS may incur unnecessary integration complexity compared with a direct wallet SDK.
USDC or USDT for agent payments?
| Question | USDC | USDT |
|---|---|---|
| First-party support in the reviewed agent-wallet products | Explicitly documented by Circle, Coinbase examples and AWS stablecoin payment documentation. | Equivalent support is not established in the reviewed primary documentation. |
| Agent-specific capabilities | Circle Agent Wallets, x402 examples and Circle nanopayments are USDC-oriented. | No matching agent-wallet, x402 or nanopayment capability is documented here. |
| Recommendation for this stack | Default starting asset, subject to network and service compatibility. | Treat as an open research question; do not assume parity. |
USDC is the practical default because the documented products and examples are built around it. That is a statement about this agent-payment stack, not a claim that USDT is unusable everywhere. If a vendor accepts USDT, verify the exact chain, contract address, decimals, settlement time, screening rules and refund process. Do not substitute a token merely because its ticker looks familiar.

How x402 lets an agent pay per request
x402 is an HTTP-native payment pattern. Coinbase describes it as an open, web-native protocol for instant stablecoin payments over HTTP, allowing pay-per-use monetization without subscriptions or manual checkout. AWS describes the exchange as an HTTP 402 response containing payment details, followed by an agent-signed retry carrying an X-PAYMENT proof.
Request sequence
- The agent requests an API, MCP server operation or web resource.
- The merchant returns HTTP 402 with machine-readable payment details: amount, asset, network, recipient and any expiry or nonce information.
- The agent checks the request against its wallet policy, session cap, destination allowlist and network rules.
- The wallet signs the payment proof or transfer without exposing its key to the application prompt.
- The agent retries the request with the X-PAYMENT proof.
- The merchant verifies settlement and returns the paid response.
- The agent records the request, payment identifier, policy decision and response for reconciliation.
Circle’s September 12, 2025 x402 example follows this discover-price, transfer-USDC and receive-paid-response pattern. A 402 response is a payment challenge, not an instruction to spend automatically: malformed amounts, unexpected destinations, expired challenges and unsupported networks must fail closed.

Implementation plan for a safe autonomous payer
1. Define the payment envelope
Write down the services the agent may call, the maximum amount per call, the maximum session total, approved currencies, approved networks and approved recipient addresses. Separate testnet and mainnet credentials. If a service cannot provide a stable recipient identity or machine-readable price, require human approval.
2. Select custody before selecting a token
Use Circle or Coinbase when managed key isolation and integrated payment tooling reduce your operational burden. Use MetaMask when your organization is prepared to own recovery and signing security. Use AgentCore when AWS identity, secrets and session controls are central to the deployment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Fund the correct network
Confirm whether the service settles on Base, Ethereum, Arbitrum or another supported network. AWS documents separate payment instruments for separate networks, and the Circle and MetaMask lists are also network-specific. A balance on one chain cannot be assumed to pay a request on another without a bridge or a funded instrument on the destination chain.
4. Enforce policy outside the model
Do not ask the language model to remember a spending limit. Enforce limits in the wallet or payment middleware, and reject requests when the amount, currency, chain, recipient or contract falls outside policy.
5. Add simulation and screening
Use transaction simulation and threat screening where available. MetaMask provides simulation and Blockaid scanning; Coinbase provides KYT screening. For other flows, add equivalent contract and destination checks before signing.
6. Require escalation for exceptional actions
Escalate policy edits, wallet recovery, new destinations, unusually large payments, bridge operations and transfers to an unrecognized contract. Circle’s email OTP requirement for mainnet policy changes illustrates the kind of human checkpoint that should exist for control-plane changes.
7. Log and reconcile
Store request metadata, 402 challenge details, policy results, signature or transaction identifiers, network, settlement status and the returned content. Never log private keys, seed phrases or reusable bearer credentials. Reconcile wallet activity against application records so duplicate retries are visible.
8. Test failure and shutdown
Test expired sessions, insufficient balance, wrong-chain requests, rejected screening, duplicate retries, malformed 402 responses, bridge delays and provider outages. Keep a kill switch that blocks new signatures while allowing investigators to inspect existing transactions.

Common failure modes and fixes
The agent pays on the wrong chain
Symptom: the wallet has funds, but the merchant reports no payment. Fix: compare the challenge network with the wallet instrument and transaction network. Fund or select the destination-chain instrument; do not resend blindly.
The payment exceeds a cap
Symptom: a legitimate request is rejected by policy. Fix: inspect both per-transaction and session limits. Increase the limit only through an authenticated control-plane change, then record who approved it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The challenge is stale or malformed
Symptom: the agent signs an amount that no longer matches the service response, or the retry is rejected. Fix: require a fresh 402 challenge, validate recipient, asset, amount, expiry and nonce, and make retries idempotent.
The wallet runs out of gas
Symptom: the stablecoin balance is sufficient but submission fails. Fix: check native gas requirements for that network. Gasless Base trading in Coinbase’s workflow does not imply gasless operation everywhere.
A destination fails screening
Symptom: KYT, Blockaid or another screening layer blocks the transfer. Fix: stop and investigate the destination; never bypass screening solely to complete an automated task.
The agent repeats a charge
Symptom: a timeout causes multiple payment attempts. Fix: persist an idempotency key or transaction reference, check settlement before retrying and cap the number of retries per request.

Decision framework
- Choose Circle Agent Wallets if your priority is documented USDC automation, bridging, x402 and nanopayments across the listed chains with policy-based control.
- Choose Coinbase CDP Agentic Wallets if you want managed keys plus integrated funding, agent skills, x402 and per-session or per-transaction limits.
- Choose MetaMask Agent Wallet if self-custody, EVM DeFi reach and organization-controlled recovery are non-negotiable.
- Choose Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Payments if agents run in AWS and you need IAM, JWT, Secrets Manager and expiring payment sessions around connector-based wallets.
For the stablecoin, start with USDC where the merchant, chain and wallet explicitly support it. Treat USDT acceptance as a separate integration that needs current primary documentation and end-to-end testing.
What the product teams say about the agent economy
Circle co-founder, chairman and CEO Jeremy Allaire said on May 11, 2026: “Financial infrastructure has historically been built for people, with manual onboarding, approvals, and payment flows that were never designed for software acting on its own.” Circle chief product and technology officer Nikhil Chandhok said in the same announcement that “USDC is uniquely well-suited for the agentic economy because it is internet-native, programmable, and always available.”
In a June 8, 2026 MetaMask announcement, Consensys founder and CEO and Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin said: “The next great expansion of the onchain economy won’t be driven by humans alone.” These statements describe the direction of the products, but production safety still depends on limits, identity, screening, observability and a tested recovery plan.
Bottom line
For autonomous API and content payments, use a policy-controlled wallet and USDC unless your specific merchant documents another combination. Circle Agent Wallets have the clearest end-to-end USDC, x402 and nanopayment story. Coinbase is compelling for an integrated managed-wallet workflow, MetaMask for self-custody, and AgentCore Payments for AWS-native enterprise orchestration. Whichever you choose, make the agent’s authority smaller than its capabilities, expire sessions, cap spend, restrict destinations and keep a human in the loop for changes that could permanently move funds.
