The best cross-training shoe depends on what you do most: lifting calls for a firm, stable base, while circuits and short cardio need more cushioning and flexibility. These eight picks cover different workout mixes, but none is a substitute for a running shoe on long distances or a specialized lifting shoe when that is your main activity. Fit matters too: a roomy toe box can suit one person and feel unstable to another.
How to choose a cross-training shoe
Cross-training shoes balance a stable platform for strength work with enough cushioning and flexibility for short runs, jumps and fast-paced sessions. That compromise makes them useful for mixed workouts, but it also means they may not excel at a single specialized activity. If most of your training is heavy lifting, prioritize firmness and stability; if you run regularly or cover longer distances, choose a purpose-built running shoe instead.

Will Griffiths, retail manager at WIT Fitness, describes the intended range as activities “from a short run to a max back squat,” in Fit&Well’s guide. A typical session can span even more movement types: CrossFit athlete Lucy Campbell told Marie Claire UK that her training combines gymnastics, plyometrics, weightlifting and cardio machines.
- Stability: A firmer base is helpful for heavy lifts and loaded movements.
- Cushioning: More cushioning can make jumps, circuits and brief cardio more comfortable, but a very soft or high platform may be less suitable for heavy lifting.
- Fit: Check the toe box and forefoot rather than relying on a general “wide” or “true to size” label. Foot shape varies, and reviewers report different fit concerns across these models.
- Workout-specific details: Grip, outsole durability and rope guards can matter for functional fitness sessions. Match these features to your training rather than treating them as universal requirements.
Men’s Health says its editors evaluated versatility, stability, durability, breathability, fit and weight, testing shoes in the gym, on the track and in HIIT classes. Fit&Well says its reviewer wore shoes for HIIT, quick cardio, resistance training and weightlifting, assessing fit, materials, breathability, cushioning, heel lift and ankle support. The recommendations below reflect those publications’ stated categories and reviewer observations; they are not independent test results.

For CrossFit, circuits and mixed movement
Reebok Nano X5 appears in both Men’s Health’s Crossfit category and Fit&Well’s wide-feet category, making it a logical option to consider for functional fitness if its fit suits you. Fit&Well specifically warns that it may feel too wide on narrow feet, so try it on if possible and pay attention to how securely your foot sits during lateral movement.
R.A.D One V2 is Fit&Well’s CrossFit pick, while Marie Claire UK names the R.A.D ONE for HIIT. These source labels refer to the names used in each guide; the available evidence does not establish that the guides evaluated the same version. Fit&Well also reviews the TYR CXT-2 as stable for resistance training and mixed-modality work. Its reviewer found the forefoot snug despite the brand’s wider-fit claim and cautioned people with bunions; the reviewer also suggested more cushioning for running-focused or high-intensity interval sessions.
Rank #2
- Breathable mesh upper with leather overlays for added durability & versatility
- Full-length Charged Cushioning midsole for optimal balance of responsiveness & comfort
- Full rubber outsole with wrap up on sides for additional durability
- Style #: 6007140
- Offset: 6mm
For circuits, Marie Claire UK includes the TYR CXT-1. Its guide also names lululemon Chargefeel 3 as an all-rounder, while reporting that the shoe can run small. These are editorial assessments, not official fit guarantees, so confirm the current model and sizing before buying.

If strength work dominates your week, Men’s Health’s Nike Metcon 10 category and Fit&Well’s NOBULL Outwork lifting category point toward shoes selected for stability rather than distance comfort. Marie Claire UK also describes the Metcon 10 as stable and notes rope guards, but says it is not suited to running. Fit&Well says the Outwork may feel heavy and stiff for distance running or walking.
Rank #3
- The rubber outsole comes with built-in cutouts for flexibility. And there are thin slits in the forefoot for added flexibility.
- A full-length foam midsole offers comfort and cushioning.
- An elastic band around the heel supplies added support.
- The upper is made of mesh for lightweight, breathable, support. The mesh collar gives you soft comfort around your ankle.
- HV9972-003
Fit&Well’s Under Armour Commit 4 is an overall-use option, but the reviewer says its cushioning may be excessive for heavy lifting. That trade-off is worth considering if you want one shoe for varied classes but also perform demanding barbell lifts.
For short cardio, comfort and outdoor sessions
Fit&Well lists the Hoka Solimar for comfort and says its high cushioning may not suit heavy lifting. Its Under Armour Reign 6 is the guide’s pick for outdoor workouts, but the reviewer considers it heavy for long-distance running. For running-focused training, Fit&Well lists the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25; the source excerpt does not establish it as a lifting or all-purpose gym shoe.
Rank #4
- ABZORB HEEL CUSHIONING - IMEVA midsole with ABZORB heel pad absorbs impact and provides added cushioning for all-day comfort during training and everyday wear
- SUEDE LEATHER UPPER - Quality suede upper delivers a classic, durable look with supportive structure that molds comfortably to your foot over time
- LACE-UP CLOSURE - Traditional lace-up design allows you to adjust the fit for maximum comfort and a secure feel during workouts and daily activities
- CUSHIONED FOOTBED - Lightly cushioned footbed provides an extra layer of soft comfort underfoot, keeping you supported through long days on your feet
- DURABLE OUTSOLE - Sturdy outsole construction offers reliable traction and long-lasting durability on gym floors, sidewalks, and everyday surfaces
For style or a broadly versatile gym shoe
Men’s Health places the While On Earth The Move Trainer in its casual-style category and the Under Armour Project Rock BSR 5 in its versatility category. Its Nike Free Metcon 7 is the publication’s overall pick. These are that guide’s editorial distinctions, not a universal ranking: compare the intended use with your main workout and check current fit information before choosing.

How to make the final choice
- Write down your main training mix. Separate heavy lifts, functional fitness, HIIT, short cardio and outdoor sessions. Choose for the activity you do most, not the one you do occasionally.
- Decide which trade-off matters more. Favor a stable, firmer feel for lifting; give cushioning and flexibility more weight for jumps and short cardio.
- Check your foot’s fit in the specific model. A model suggested for wide feet can still feel too roomy if your feet are narrow, and a snug forefoot may be uncomfortable if you have bunions.
- Verify the exact model and current sizing. Product generations, sizing and availability can change. Confirm the listing is for the named model and consult current size guidance before ordering.
- Use a specialized shoe when your training requires it. A versatile trainer is a compromise; long-distance running and specialized lifting can call for purpose-built footwear.
