What “cross-play” means for a racing group
Cross-play lets different platforms share a race
Cross-play means a player on one supported platform can be matched with or invited to players on another supported platform. A PC player and a console player can therefore enter the same online event, provided the game supports cross-play for that event and both accounts meet the game’s requirements.

Platform lists are specific, not interchangeable. “PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S” does not mean PS4, Xbox One, Switch or mobile versions are included. The platform combinations in the table are the combinations confirmed for these games; check the store page for the edition you are about to buy.
Cross-progression is a different feature
Cross-progression carries some combination of career progress, cars, unlocks or purchased content between platforms. It is not required to race with friends. A game can let you compete with a friend on another system while keeping your progress tied to the platform where you earned it.
Need for Speed Unbound is the clearest warning: EA confirms cross-play, but says progress and content do not transfer when you switch platforms. Ubisoft describes cross-progression separately for The Crew Motorfest; that does not establish that every multiplayer mode has cross-play. Treat each feature as a separate yes-or-no question.

Mode support matters as much as the platform list
A game may support cross-play in ranked races but not a particular event, or in selected matchmaking activities rather than every mode. F1 25 has an unusually explicit list of cross-play modes. The Crew Motorfest has a narrower confirmation: cross-platform matchmaking is available in some multiplayer modes. Ask “Can our group play this exact mode together?” rather than only “Does the game have cross-play?”
Forza Horizon 5: the broadest mixed-platform recommendation
Why it is the default pick
Forza’s official announcement for the PS5 release confirms cross-play among Xbox consoles, PC and PS5, and says the PS5 version has the same content as the Xbox and PC releases. That combination covers the most common mixed group in this list without requiring everyone to move to one console family.
The game’s open-world format makes it a natural fit when your group does not want a formal championship. Friends can meet for informal drives, set up races and change activities without committing to a single Formula-style session. “Open-world” is a style description, not a claim that it wins a measured quality test.

What to verify before you buy
- Confirm that each friend is buying a version for Xbox, PC or PS5—the platforms identified in the official announcement.
- Check the exact edition and current retailer listing for your region. The announcement confirms cross-play, not a universal purchase entitlement across platforms.
- Make sure everyone is signed in to the platform account required by their version and has completed any first-run online setup.
- Agree on the platform where each person will actually play; cross-play does not merge separate purchases into one shared license.
A practical group setup
- Choose one person to organize the session and decide whether you want free driving or a specific race activity.
- Have every player finish updates and launch the same current game release on Xbox, PC or PS5.
- Use the game’s in-game social or convoy invitation flow to add the other players. Menu wording can differ by platform and edition, so follow the labels shown in your installed version.
- Start with a short event. If one player cannot see the invitation, confirm that both players are online, signed in to the intended account and using the same regional service availability.
- Once everyone can join, move to longer routes or a planned sequence of races.
The official confirmation establishes that the platforms can play together; it does not promise identical network conditions, input devices or frame-rate settings on every system.
F1 25: best for Formula racing, leagues and private lobbies
Cross-play modes are clearly documented
Electronic Arts Help lists PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as supported cross-play platforms for F1 25. It specifically names F1 World, ranked and unranked play, local multiplayer, leagues and custom lobbies. That makes F1 25 the strongest choice when your group has a planned format rather than wanting an open-ended driving world.
Custom lobbies are useful for a private evening: choose the participants, set the session rules and avoid relying on public matchmaking. Leagues suit a recurring group that wants results across multiple meetings. Ranked and unranked modes serve different priorities, while F1 World provides another documented cross-play destination.

How to enable or disable cross-play
- Open F1 25 and go to Settings.
- Find the cross-play option and leave it enabled if players on different platforms need to match.
- If you disable it, expect matchmaking to be limited to players on the same platform, as EA’s support page explains.
- Choose the documented mode—F1 World, ranked, unranked, local multiplayer, leagues or a custom lobby—and invite the group through that mode’s multiplayer flow.
Because cross-play is configurable, a group can accidentally create a same-platform-only session even though the game supports cross-platform competition. Check the setting before troubleshooting invitations.
Who should choose it?
- Choose F1 25 when everyone owns a PC, PS5 or Xbox Series X|S and wants track-based Formula racing.
- Choose it for organized play when custom lobbies or leagues matter more than a shared open world.
- Look elsewhere if someone in the group uses a platform outside the documented list, or if the group mainly wants casual street racing.

Platforms and default behavior
EA documents cross-play for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with cross-play enabled by default. Friends are located through their EA ID and then added as EA Friends, so the key to a smooth first session is collecting the correct account names before anyone starts searching.

How to add friends and check the toggle
- Ask each friend for the exact EA ID they use for the game, including spelling and numbers.
- Open the game’s social or friend-search interface and search for that EA ID.
- Send the friend request and wait for it to be accepted as an EA Friend.
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Game and confirm that cross-play remains enabled.
- Invite the accepted EA Friends to your online session and test with a short event before planning a longer group run.
The documented path is important: cross-play is not only a platform-store setting. A player can be on a supported system and still fail to connect if the EA ID search or in-game toggle is wrong.

Understand the no-cross-progression trade-off
EA says progress and content do not transfer when you switch platforms. If you move from PC to PS5 or from Xbox Series X|S to PC, do not expect your earned progress or owned content to follow you. This does not prevent cross-play; it affects what happens to your personal account history when you change systems.
For a group that stays on one platform, this limitation may never matter. For a player who regularly changes platforms, it is a purchase decision that should be made before investing time or money in the game.

Ubisoft’s help information confirms cross-platform play and describes matchmaking in some multiplayer modes. That wording is narrower than a promise that every race, activity or social feature works across platforms. Ubisoft also describes cross-progression across platforms, but cross-progression should not be read as proof of unrestricted cross-play.

- Write down the exact activity your group wants to play, rather than relying on the general game title.
- Check Ubisoft’s current support information for that mode and the platforms your friends own.
- Confirm whether the activity uses the cross-platform matchmaking Ubisoft identifies.
- Only then choose an edition and platform. If the mode is not explicitly covered, treat cross-play as unconfirmed.
This extra check is the reason Motorfest belongs in a qualified recommendation. It may be a good fit for a particular supported activity, but the available confirmation does not justify promising unrestricted cross-platform sessions.

Cross-play troubleshooting checklist
If a friend cannot be found
- Confirm the platform is one of the documented supported platforms for that game.
- Check the account identifier: EA ID search is required for Need for Speed Unbound.
- In F1 25, verify that cross-play is enabled in Settings.
- Restart the game after accepting a friend request or changing a cross-play setting if the social list does not refresh.
If an invitation works but the race does not start
- Check the selected mode. F1 25 lists specific cross-play modes; Motorfest only has confirmation for some multiplayer modes.
- Have the host leave and recreate the lobby after every player has joined the relevant friend list.
- Test a smaller, short session first. This separates a mode-compatibility problem from a general account or network problem.
- Confirm everyone is running the current version available for their platform and has completed required online sign-in.
If someone changes platforms
Do not assume saved progress will appear on the new system. Need for Speed Unbound explicitly lacks progress and content transfer between platforms. For other games, verify the publisher’s cross-progression terms separately from the cross-play terms; Motorfest’s cross-progression description does not change the mode limitation on matchmaking.
Buying and planning checklist for a mixed-platform group
- List every platform. Write down Xbox console generation, PC, PS5 or any unsupported system before choosing a game.
- Choose the mode. Identify open-world driving, Formula racing, street racing, a league, a ranked session or a particular Motorfest activity.
- Verify the exact combination. Use the platform and mode table, then confirm the current store listing and support page because editions and availability can change.
- Separate cross-play from progression. Decide whether moving between platforms is likely. If so, investigate progression before purchasing.
- Standardize accounts. Collect EA IDs for Unbound, keep F1 25 cross-play enabled and make sure each player can access the relevant platform account.
- Run a test session. Schedule a short race before a league night or long group event. It is easier to fix an invitation or mode issue before everyone commits to a full session.
Bottom line by use case
Pick Forza Horizon 5 when your group spans Xbox, PC and PS5 and wants the least ambiguous broad cross-play choice. Pick F1 25 for Formula racing, custom lobbies, leagues or ranked competition, provided everyone uses PC, PS5 or Xbox Series X|S and cross-play is enabled. Pick Need for Speed Unbound for street racing when EA ID friend search is convenient and you do not need progress to follow you between platforms. Consider The Crew Motorfest only after confirming that the particular multiplayer mode your friends want is covered by Ubisoft’s cross-platform matchmaking support.
