Best Cricut Print Then Cut Settings for Sticker Paper and Printable Vinyl

The best Cricut setting is the material preset that matches your exact sticker paper or printable vinyl and your machine. There is no single pressure, blade depth, or pass count that works for every brand and finish. In Design Space, open Browse All Materials, select the stock that matches what is loaded, and run a small test cut before committing a full sheet.

For Cricut printable sticker materials, print with an inkjet printer, keep the black registration marks unobstructed, use the print layout shown by Design Space, and calibrate if the cut does not follow the printed artwork. Bleed is normally useful, but Cricut’s Create Sticker workflow specifically says to turn Bleed off when a design has no border.

What to set first: a reliable baseline

Print Then Cut has three separate parts that must agree: the artwork in Design Space, the printer’s page output, and the cut setting selected for the physical stock. A perfect blade setting cannot correct a page that was scaled, centered, or printed with unreadable sensor marks.

Decision Recommended starting point Why it matters
Material setting Choose the preset that names the exact sticker paper or printable vinyl, or the closest Cricut-compatible stock listed for that material. Presets coordinate pressure and blade behavior for a material category; copying a number from another stock can cut through the liner or fail to cut the face.
Printer Use an inkjet printer for Cricut printable sticker paper and Cricut printable vinyl. Cricut warns that laser heat can damage these materials or the printer.
Print layout Portrait orientation, one page per sheet, high print quality, normal printable margins, and no scaling, centering, or edge-printing option. Changing the page geometry moves the registration marks away from the positions the machine expects.
Bleed Leave bleed enabled for ordinary Print Then Cut artwork when a small color extension around the edge is acceptable. Turn it off for a Create Sticker design with no border. Bleed gives the machine a little extra color to trim; a borderless design can look better without that extension.
Calibration Use Design Space’s calibration flow when cuts consistently miss the printed lines or when the software requests calibration. Calibration corrects the relationship between the printer’s output and the machine’s sensor and blade position.

These are starting decisions, not a universal recipe. Thickness, coating, adhesive construction, color, and finish vary by stock, so test an inconspicuous shape on the actual sheet.

Check compatibility before designing

Which Cricut machines support Print Then Cut?

Current Cricut guidance lists Print Then Cut support for the Explore, Maker, Venture, Joy Xtra, and Joy 2 families. The original Cricut Joy is not Print Then Cut capable. Select the exact model in Design Space rather than assuming that a setting for one generation applies to another; support and material lists can change as software and machines are updated.

Machine group Print Then Cut status and sensor guidance
Explore Air 2 and earlier Print Then Cut is available, but Cricut says these machines are limited to non-reflective white materials for reliable sensor reading.
Newer supported Explore and Maker models Cricut’s current compatibility guidance allows non-reflective white, lightly colored, and simple patterned materials, subject to the listed material and finish restrictions.
Venture Supported in the current guides. Follow the on-screen placement instructions during calibration and loading; the calibration-sheet placement differs from other smart cutting machines.
Joy Xtra and Joy 2 Listed as supported for Print Then Cut. Use the model selected in Design Space and the material options it presents.
Original Cricut Joy Not Print Then Cut capable.

Choose the right printer

For Cricut printable sticker paper and printable sticker material, use an inkjet printer. Cricut’s Create Sticker and Printable Sticker Paper instructions describe these stocks as inkjet-only and warn that a laser printer’s heat can damage the material or the printer. A general Print Then Cut guide notes that laser printers can be used for ordinary paper or specialty media specifically made to tolerate laser heat, but that exception does not make a laser printer suitable for Cricut’s printable sticker paper or printable vinyl.

Identify the printable face and feed direction

Look at the packaging and the sheet before loading it. Cricut describes current printable sticker stock as having a blank printable face and a reverse side carrying a grid or logo. Older versions can differ, and third-party media may use another marking system, so do not rely on the appearance alone. Confirm which side your printer feeds upward or downward, then make a small test print to verify that ink lands on the intended face.

Check the finish before you print a full sheet

Print Then Cut’s optical sensor must read the black registration marks around the page. Reflective, metallic, glitter, glossy, dark, and some holographic surfaces can reflect or absorb the sensor’s light and shift the cut. Cricut lists exceptions for certain Cricut-branded specialty materials, but an exception for one named stock should not be generalized to every shiny or dark material. If your sheet has a difficult finish, test one page first and use a supported non-reflective stock when accuracy is critical.

Design Space workflow, step by step

1. Select the correct machine

Open Design Space, connect the machine you will use, and verify its model in the machine-selection step. The material menu and sensor expectations are tied to that selection.

2. Create or import the artwork

Set the finished size before sending it to the printer. Keep important artwork away from the page edges so the registration area remains clear. If you want one outside contour around a multi-layer illustration, select all of the layers and choose Flatten. Flatten turns the design into one printable layer with one outer cut boundary. Using Attach instead can preserve separate cut lines around individual elements, which is not the result you want for a single sticker outline.

3. Decide whether the design has a border

A visible white or colored border is different from bleed. For ordinary Print Then Cut work, Cricut recommends bleed because the added color gives the blade coverage if the cut is fractionally inside or outside the printed edge. In the Create Sticker workflow, Cricut says: “For best results if your sticker design does not have a Border, turn off Bleed before printing.” Apply that instruction to a borderless Create Sticker design; otherwise, keep the normal bleed choice when its extra edge color will be trimmed away cleanly.

4. Choose the material preset

Click Browse All Materials and select the preset that matches the stock. In Create Sticker, the Compatible tab narrows the choices for the selected machine and project. Choose a paper preset for sticker paper and a printable-vinyl preset for printable vinyl when those exact options exist. If your brand is not named, select the closest documented material category, then test a small shape rather than copying a pressure value from an unrelated product.

On an Explore Air 2, Cricut says to turn the Smart Set dial to Custom before choosing a material in Design Space. On machines without that dial, follow the on-screen material prompt. Do not override the selected preset unless a test cut shows a clear problem and you understand which variable you are changing.

5. Print without changing the registration geometry

  1. Send the project to the printer from Design Space and keep the page in portrait orientation.
  2. Use the printer’s high-quality setting so the artwork and black sensor marks have solid, clean edges.
  3. Print one page per sheet. Do not use “fit to page,” “shrink to fit,” “enlarge,” or a manual percentage.
  4. Disable centering and edge or borderless printing. Keep the printer’s normal printable margins.
  5. Do not rotate the page after it prints. The orientation and location of the registration marks must remain exactly as Design Space laid them out.

Let the ink dry according to the printer and material instructions before placing the sheet on the mat. Handling a wet or soft-coated print can smear the sensor marks or the artwork.

6. Place the sheet on the mat

Use the mat type and placement shown in Design Space. Cricut’s Create Sticker instructions include a LightGrip mat among the supporting supplies; use a mat that holds the sheet flat without stretching or buckling it. Align the top and left edges to the mat guides, smooth the page down, and keep the black registration border visible. A curled corner, lifted edge, or piece of tape crossing a sensor mark can prevent scanning.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Load and scan

Load the mat when Design Space prompts you. The machine scans the registration marks before cutting. Keep the machine still while it searches; if it cannot find the marks, unload only when instructed and inspect the page for glare, smudges, cropping, or a blocked border.

8. Run a test cut

Before sending an entire sheet of valuable stock, cut a small circle, square, or spare sticker. Check two things separately: whether the blade cuts the intended layer without cutting excessively into the backing, and whether the contour follows the printed edge. A good contour with a poor depth points to the material setting; a clean cut that is consistently offset points to printing geometry, sensor reading, or calibration.

How material presets affect pressure and blade behavior

Design Space’s presets are the meaningful setting to select; Cricut’s current instructions do not establish one numerical pressure or blade-depth value that applies to every printable sticker paper or printable vinyl brand. The same label can describe sheets with different coatings and liners, and machine generations use different cutting systems. For that reason, an online number copied from another machine or stock is not a dependable baseline.

When the preset is not an exact match

  • Start with the closest material category shown under Browse All Materials or the Compatible tab for your machine.
  • Use a test cut on the actual sheet, preferably in a corner or on a sacrificial sheet from the same package.
  • If the face is cut but the backing remains intact, the setting is doing what a kiss cut should do. If the design lifts with an uncut edge, stop and reassess the preset, blade condition, and sheet loading.
  • If the blade cuts deeply through the liner or mat, stop the job rather than increasing speed or pressure blindly; return to the documented preset and test again.

These checks help you distinguish an unsuitable preset from a dull or obstructed blade. They do not create a universal numeric recipe for an unlisted brand.

Sticker paper and printable vinyl: what changes

Factor Sticker paper Printable vinyl
Preset choice Choose the sticker-paper preset that matches the stock and machine. Choose the printable-vinyl preset that matches the stock and machine.
Printer requirement for Cricut-branded material Inkjet only; laser heat may damage the sheet or printer. Use an inkjet printer for Cricut printable vinyl and sticker material.
Printable face Confirm the blank printable side; current Cricut stock uses a marked reverse, but older versions may differ. Confirm the face and feed direction from the package because construction and markings vary.
Sensor concern Glossy or reflective coatings can interfere with registration-mark scanning. Glossy, dark, metallic, glitter, and some holographic finishes can also reduce scan reliability.
First-run approach Print one sheet, allow the ink to settle, then test a small contour. Print one sheet, verify the surface is compatible with the sensor, then test a small contour.

The table describes setup decisions, not a promise that one material is universally easier to cut. Follow the package directions for drying, storage, and application, and use the preset that names the stock whenever Design Space provides one.

Bleed: when to leave it on or turn it off

Bleed is a small extension of color beyond the artwork edge. Cricut defines it as “a small border of color added around each image that allows for more precise cutting.” It compensates for tiny differences between the printed contour and the blade path, so a white sliver is less likely to appear around a design that already has a border.

Keep bleed enabled when

  • The design has a colored or white border that will be trimmed away.
  • You are using ordinary Print Then Cut and want the extra edge coverage recommended in Cricut’s general guidance.
  • A slight extension beyond the visible artwork will not change the finished look.

Turn bleed off when

  • You are using Create Sticker and the design has no border, following Cricut’s specific instruction.
  • The extended color would create an unwanted halo or change a deliberately edge-to-edge graphic.

Bleed does not fix a mis-scaled print or a miscalibrated machine. It only changes the pixels printed around the edge.

Calibration for inaccurate cuts

Cricut machines are supplied pre-calibrated, but calibration can improve Print Then Cut alignment when the blade repeatedly misses the printed contours or Design Space asks you to calibrate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Design Space and choose the machine’s Print Then Cut calibration command. Follow the on-screen prompts for the connected machine.
  2. Print the calibration sheet in portrait mode with black ink, high print quality, and sufficient ink.
  3. Use plain, white, non-textured copy paper for the calibration sheet. Print one page per sheet.
  4. Do not scale, enlarge, shrink, center, or use edge printing. The calibration pattern must retain its intended dimensions.
  5. Place the sheet on the mat exactly as the screen shows and load it. Venture’s placement instructions differ from those for other smart cutting machines.
  6. Let the machine scan and cut the indicated lines, then answer the prompts based on which line is most accurately aligned.
  7. Repeat only when Design Space requests another pass. After calibration, reprint a small sticker test using the same printer settings you intend to use for the project.

If calibration is accurate but one glossy or dark sheet still fails to scan, the finish is a more likely cause than the calibration value.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause Correction
Design Space cannot find the registration marks Glare, dark or reflective stock, smudged marks, a covered border, or an unsupported finish. Use a non-reflective white or otherwise supported material, keep the mark area clear, check that the page printed at full size, and test again.
Cuts are shifted by the same amount on the whole page Print scaling, centering, orientation, or calibration error. Reprint in portrait with no scaling or centering, then run the calibration flow if the offset remains.
Cut follows some stickers but misses others Sheet movement, a lifted corner, inconsistent mat adhesion, or artwork that was not flattened as intended. Secure the sheet flat, verify mat alignment, and flatten multi-layer artwork when one outside contour is required.
Blade cuts through the liner or mat Preset does not match the stock, or the material is thinner than the selected category. Stop, return to the closest documented preset, and test a small shape on the actual stock before changing anything else.
Sticker edge has a white sliver Bleed was disabled on a design that needed edge coverage, or the contour is slightly outside the printed color. For a bordered design, use the normal bleed recommendation. Keep bleed off only where the borderless Create Sticker instruction applies.
Ink smears during loading or cutting Print surface is still wet or the sheet was handled on the printable face. Allow the print to dry as directed by the printer and stock manufacturer, then reload a clean sheet.
Only an older Explore machine fails with colored stock Explore Air 2 and earlier machines have stricter sensor compatibility. Use non-reflective white material or a machine and stock combination listed as compatible.

A repeatable setup checklist

  • Confirm that the connected model supports Print Then Cut; the original Cricut Joy does not.
  • Check whether your machine is an Explore Air 2 or earlier, because those models have the non-reflective-white limitation.
  • Confirm the printable face and printer feed direction on the actual package.
  • Use an inkjet printer for Cricut printable sticker paper and printable vinyl.
  • Keep the sensor-mark area free of tape, glare, smudges, and cropping.
  • Flatten layers when the finished sticker needs one outside contour; use Attach only when separate element cuts are intentional.
  • Select the matching material preset under Browse All Materials or Compatible.
  • On Explore Air 2, set the Smart Set dial to Custom before choosing the material in Design Space.
  • Print portrait, at high quality, one page per sheet, with no scaling, centering, shrink-to-fit, enlargement, or edge printing.
  • Choose bleed deliberately: generally on for edge coverage, off for a borderless Create Sticker design.
  • Place the sheet squarely on the mat, load it as prompted, and let the machine scan.
  • Run a small test cut before using the entire sheet.
  • Calibrate if the cut is consistently inaccurate, using the unscaled portrait calibration sheet and the placement shown for your machine.
