The right choice depends on whether the specific bill and payment route qualify for rewards—and whether those rewards exceed any card-processing fee. For U.S. cardholders, compare each bill separately, account for reward caps and category-selection rules, and check current issuer and biller terms before switching autopay.
How to choose a card for bills and utilities
Start with the way each bill is charged, not the card’s headline rewards rate. An electric bill paid directly to the utility, a mobile bill paid through a retailer, and a streaming subscription may post under different merchant categories. A reward applies only when both the purchase and its payment route meet the card’s terms.

- List your recurring bills. Separate household utilities, phone and internet, streaming, insurance, and rent or mortgage payments; issuers may treat them differently.
- Check category eligibility. Read the issuer’s category definitions and confirm that your biller and payment channel qualify.
- Check fees. Look at the biller’s payment screen or published terms for a credit-card processing or convenience fee.
- Calculate net rewards. Subtract the fee from the value of rewards you expect to earn, and account for any category cap or annual fee.
- Review card conditions and benefits. Check whether you must activate or choose a category, and whether a relevant protection benefit applies to your bill.
- Pay the statement in full. Interest can quickly outweigh rewards; consider the ongoing APR as well as the rewards rate.
Bankrate principal writer Ana Staples advises: “Definitely check if there are any processing fees associated with using credit cards when you’re setting up the payment.” That is a check to make, not an assumption that every biller charges a fee. Bankrate also recommends comparing fees with reward value. Bankrate’s bill-payment guidance explains the trade-off.

Three card approaches to compare
The October 2026 comparison below describes examples to investigate, not a universal ranking. Terms can change, and the issuer’s current rules control. Annual fees and biller-specific processing fees are not stated in the comparison; check them before applying or changing a payment method.

| Card | Potential fit | Rewards and conditions described | Other relevant detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa Signature Card | Household utilities | Home utilities are described as one of the selectable 5% categories. The comparison reports a $2,000 combined quarterly limit across two selected categories. Cardholders must select categories each quarter. | Selection is required each quarter; spending beyond the combined limit does not earn the described bonus rate. Annual fee and biller fee: not stated in the comparison. |
| Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards | Some online services | Online shopping is described as a selectable category that includes cable, streaming, internet, and phone plans. The comparison reports a quarterly cap on combined bonus categories; verify the current cap and terms with the issuer. | A bill’s actual transaction must qualify under the issuer’s terms. Annual fee and biller fee: not stated in the comparison. |
| Wells Fargo Active Cash | Eligible purchases where a simpler rate is preferred | The comparison describes unlimited 2% cash rewards on purchases. | It also describes up to $600 in cell-phone protection when the monthly bill is paid with the card, subject to a $25 deductible. Confirm current coverage terms and eligibility. Annual fee and biller fee: not stated in the comparison. |
A flat-rate card is easier to manage across eligible purchases. A category card may produce a higher return on a qualifying bill, but only if the category fits, required selections are made, and the spending stays within the cap. Confirm each card’s current terms directly with its issuer before applying.
Why a bill may not earn the expected category bonus
A bill’s subject matter does not guarantee how the charge is classified. Chase’s rewards category FAQ lists electric, household fuel, water, sanitation, internet, cable, satellite television and radio, cellular, wireless data, and landline services in its utilities category. It also cautions that a transaction may not qualify if the merchant is classified in another category. For instance, paying a phone bill through a retailer coded as a telephone-equipment store may not count as a service-category purchase.
Check the issuer’s category rules and, where possible, how the biller’s charge appears on your statement. If you use a third-party payment route, do not assume it will code the same way as paying the service provider directly. When eligibility is unclear, ask the issuer how it applies the category and monitor the first statement before relying on the bonus.

Compare fees with the value of rewards
There is no universal break-even calculation because bill amounts, fees, card rewards, and qualification vary. For each bill, estimate the reward value on the amount that qualifies, then subtract the biller’s card fee. Include an annual fee if you are evaluating the card as a whole, and consider any capped bonus spending separately from spending that earns a lower rate.
Rank #3
Discover likewise advises checking whether a utility company charges processing fees and ensuring rewards offset the cost. Its utility-bill guidance was last updated February 4, 2026. A fee can make a higher headline rewards rate a worse deal than a fee-free payment method.

KUBRA’s 2025 Credit Card Usage for Bill Payments Research, published in April 2025 and sponsored by KUBRA, reports that respondents used cards for subscriptions (59%), internet or phone services (54%), utilities such as electricity and water (42%), insurance (39%), and rent or mortgage (10%). In the report, 66% said rewards or cash back would encourage more card use for bills, while 48% cited lower fees or no interest. These are survey responses, not population-wide estimates; the methodology and sample details are not established here. The report is hosted on American Express’s document domain.
The figures show that people report using cards across several kinds of bills, but they do not establish that a given bill qualifies for a card’s bonus category or that paying by card is financially worthwhile. Those decisions depend on the issuer’s terms and the biller’s fees.
