Citi Strata: choose live entertainment or streaming
Citi Strata earns 3X ThankYou Points on one eligible Self-Select Category, which includes Live Entertainment and Select Streaming Services. Select Streaming Services is the default when the account opens, and the primary cardmember can change the selection once each calendar quarter. Check Citi’s Strata Card details for the current eligible-category terms.
The card is most relevant when your spending is concentrated in one of those categories and you are willing to manage the selection. Because the reward is in points, do not compare 3X directly with a cash-back percentage without checking how you expect to redeem the points and what that redemption is worth to you.

Blue Cash Preferred: for eligible streaming subscriptions
American Express lists 6% cash back on eligible U.S. streaming subscriptions from select providers on the Blue Cash Preferred Card. The annual fee is $0 for the first cardmember year and $95 afterward. The card may suit a household with enough eligible streaming and other card spending to make the fee worthwhile, but the 6% rate does not apply to every subscription. Review American Express’s current Blue Cash Preferred terms for provider eligibility and conditions.
Billing path matters: a subscription billed through a third party or bundled with another service may not qualify. The terms also describe a monthly streaming credit for enrolled cards and qualifying direct subscriptions at DisneyPlus.com, Hulu.com, or Stream.ESPN.com, subject to the credit’s conditions. Treat that credit as a separate benefit, not as proof that every subscription earns the 6% rate.

What counts as an entertainment purchase?
There is no universal card-network definition that guarantees the same reward across issuers. Chase puts it plainly: “Not all credit card issuers code entertainment purchases the same way.” Issuers rely on merchant information and their own card terms, so a concert ticket, streaming charge, or attraction admission can be treated differently depending on the seller and transaction. Does it work for concert tickets?
It depends on the card’s eligible-category definition and the ticket seller’s merchant coding. A concert purchase may qualify when bought from an eligible promoter or venue, but a third-party ticket marketplace or another seller may process it under a different category. Check the issuer’s terms and, where practical, the merchant details before counting on a bonus reward.

How to compare cards for your actual spending
- List your main purchases. Separate live-event tickets, movies, attractions, and streaming subscriptions; a card’s broad label may not cover every merchant you use.
- Match each purchase to the issuer’s terms. Check the named eligible categories, provider lists, billing conditions, and exclusions—not just the word “entertainment.”
- Account for effort and timing. Discover requires quarterly activation; Citi Strata requires a category selection that can be changed once per calendar quarter. Savor’s listed entertainment rate is ongoing, while Discover’s cited offer is for Q4 2026.
- Compare limits and fees. Include Discover’s combined quarterly category cap and Blue Cash Preferred’s annual fee after the first year when estimating the value of rewards.
- Value rewards realistically. Cash back is straightforward to estimate. Citi ThankYou Points require you to consider your likely redemption rather than assume a fixed cash-back equivalent.
- Count only benefits you will use. A statement credit or other perk adds value only if you meet its conditions and would use the qualifying service or purchase.
For a final check, consult the issuers’ terms close to the application or purchase date. Merchant coding and card benefits can change, and a plausible-looking entertainment purchase is not a guarantee of bonus-category rewards.
