For an i9-12900K running sustained, heavy workloads near its 241 W maximum turbo power, consider a high-capacity cooler such as the ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360, if your case supports its radiator. For air cooling, the Noctua NH-D15 G2 is a current high-end LGA1700 option, but check case height and memory and motherboard clearance. Neither is proven best for every gamer: workload, CPU power limits, case airflow and fan noise all affect the choice.
The i9-12900K uses the LGA1700 socket, has 125 W Processor Base Power and 241 W Maximum Turbo Power, and has a 100°C junction limit, according to Intel’s specifications. Those figures describe the CPU; they do not guarantee a particular temperature with any cooler. Intel does not bundle a fan heatsink with this K-series processor, so you need a separate cooling solution.

Cooler options for the i9-12900K
These choices combine current product coverage with historical testing. The direct i9-12900K tests in the sources concern older cooler models; newer products below have not been established as tested on this exact CPU.
| Cooler | Why consider it | Tradeoffs and caveats |
|---|---|---|
| ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 | PC Gamer lists LGA1700 support and selects it as its best liquid cooler in its current roundup. It is a high-capacity AIO candidate for a case with a suitable radiator mount. | The roundup tests an i7-14700K, not an i9-12900K. The direct 12900K evidence available here is for the older Liquid Freezer II 240. Check radiator dimensions and motherboard clearance; do not transfer test temperatures between generations. |
| Noctua NH-D15 G2 | A current dual-tower air cooler. Noctua lists LGA1700 support and eight heatpipes; PC Gamer reports strong air-cooling performance in testing on an i7-14700K. | Check case height, memory and motherboard clearance. Its comparative results are not direct i9-12900K tests. |
| be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 | Club386 directly tested it with an i9-12900K at 125 W and 241 W, making it useful evidence about the tradeoff at high CPU power. | The test dates from 2021 and does not establish current availability, pricing or included mounting hardware. At 241 W, Club386 reports an 87.5°C average Performance-core temperature at full fan speed. |
| Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE | PC Gamer’s 2026 roundup describes it as a value option and reports results on a high-power i7-14700K. | That is not a test on the i9-12900K, so do not promise a particular temperature under unrestricted 12900K loads. The roundup reports more noise at full fan speed than for the NH-D15 G2. |
Compare sustained-load performance, noise at a practical fan curve, case compatibility, mounting hardware, price and warranty. Radiator size alone does not determine the best choice: workload, power limits, airflow and acoustics matter too.

What testing says about cooling the 12900K
In a 2021 Club386 test, three be quiet! coolers were tested with an i9-12900K at 125 W and 241 W. At 241 W with fans at 500 RPM, all three reached the test board’s 100°C critical temperature. At full fan speed, the Dark Rock Pro 4 produced an average Performance-core temperature of 87.5°C. With a 125 W cap, temperatures fell substantially; even the Shadow Rock 3 stayed below an 80°C all-core average at the lowest fan setting. These are results from one test setup, not guaranteed temperatures for other builds.
Tom’s Hardware tested the ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 240 with an i9-12900K. In an unrestricted Cinebench run drawing a little over 230 W, it reached the CPU’s thermal limit and throttled. At a 200 W CPU limit, it averaged 63°C above ambient in Cinebench. In its OCCT test at 200 W and the default fan curve, it averaged 66°C above ambient; a quieter reduced-fan setup could not sustain that scenario.

- V2 Performance Upgrade: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE V2 is the upgraded version of the Peerless Assassin 120 SE, combining a dual-tower heatsink with a higher-airflow fan system to provide extra cooling headroom for gaming, content creation, and sustained desktop workloads
- Product Specifications: The cooler measures 125(L) x 135(W) x 155(H) mm (4.92 x 5.31 x 6.1 inches); the front fan can be raised to clear taller RAM, which increases the overall cooler height, so check both RAM height and the maximum CPU cooler height listed for your case
- Dual 28mm PWM Fans: The two TL-C12C-X28 V2 120mm fans are 28mm thick and run at speeds up to 1850RPM±10%, delivering up to 88.89CFM airflow and 2.21mm H2O static pressure with a rated maximum noise level of 29.5dBA; the 4-Pin PWM connection lets users adjust the fan curve through the motherboard BIOS or fan-control software, lowering fan speed and noise under light loads while allowing the fans to ramp up when more cooling is needed
- AGHP Gen 5.0 Technology: Six 6mm heat pipes help maintain heat transfer whether the case is used vertically or horizontally, while the pure copper base and fully electroplated, reflow-soldered construction distribute heat across both aluminum fin stacks
- Compatibility: The cooler supports Intel LGA1851/1700/1200/115X and AMD AM5/AM4; mounting plates, fasteners, TF7 thermal paste, and an installation manual are included, and AM4/AM5 installations reuse the motherboard’s original AMD backplate
PC Gamer’s 2026 comparison uses an i7-14700K, not an i9-12900K. Its approximately 230 W Prime95 air-cooler run reports 66°C average and 73°C maximum for the NH-D15 G2, and 71°C average and 80°C maximum for the Peerless Assassin 120 SE, normalised to 20°C ambient. These are results for PC Gamer’s test bench and should not be treated as 12900K temperatures.

Check socket, mounting and case fit
Intel specifies FCLGA1700 for the processor. Intel’s compatibility guidance says 12th-generation desktop CPUs use LGA1700. Because the socket hole pattern and stack-up height changed, older coolers may need a dedicated LGA1700 mounting kit. Verify support for the exact cooler SKU or revision, not just the product family.

- For a tower cooler, check the case’s CPU-cooler height limit and clearance around RAM, motherboard heatsinks and the PCIe area.
- For an AIO, verify radiator size and thickness, fan arrangement, tubing route and case mounting position.
- Consider your workload and power settings. Gaming loads, sustained rendering and motherboard power limits can create different cooling demands.
PC Gamer notes potential interference between the Liquid Freezer III Pro and tall M.2 coolers, and says its Intel installation requires replacing the built-in ILM with the included contact frame. Treat these as model-specific installation considerations, not requirements for all coolers.
What cooler do I need for an i9-12900K?
For sustained heavy workloads near the CPU’s 241 W maximum turbo power, shortlist a high-capacity AIO or a strong high-end air cooler, and check independent tests and build compatibility. For gaming or a CPU with a lower power limit, the demands can differ; no single cooler is guaranteed to be best for every system.

FAQ
Does the i9-12900K come with a cooler?
No. Intel lists K-series processors such as the i9-12900K among processors shipped without a fan heatsink, so plan to buy a separate cooling solution.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is a 240 mm AIO enough for an i9-12900K?
It depends on the exact cooler, workload, power limit, fan speed and case airflow. Tom’s Hardware’s test of the older ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 240 found that it throttled in an unrestricted Cinebench run above 230 W, while it averaged 63°C above ambient at a 200 W limit. That result does not establish performance for every 240 mm AIO.

Will an older CPU cooler fit the LGA1700 socket?
Not necessarily. Check the exact model and revision for LGA1700 support and the correct mounting hardware. Some older coolers may need a separate mounting kit, and case and motherboard clearance still matter.
Should I choose an air cooler or an AIO?
Choose based on tested performance for your workload, noise, case compatibility, mounting requirements and budget. AIOs need a suitable radiator mount; large tower coolers need enough case height and clearance around memory and motherboard components.
