The best cabinet for a small-room corner is the one that fits the measured footprint, leaves space for its door and wall anchor, and provides enough clear shelf height for your tallest item. For most tight corners, the current IKEA BLÅLIDEN (35 × 32 × 151 cm) is the compact starting point. A Detolf-format tower (about 43 × 37 × 163 cm outside) is better when you can spare a little more depth and want wider shelves.
Start with the corner, not the cabinet
A cabinet that fits between two walls can still fail if the door cannot swing open, a skirting board pushes it forward, or the frame cannot be anchored. Measure the installation site before comparing models.

Measure the usable width
Measure from the corner to the nearest obstruction on both walls, then subtract clearance for the door, hinge side and any trim. Use the smaller result as your maximum cabinet width. Do not assume a nominal cabinet width is the same as the space it needs: handles, hinges and a door swing can project beyond the box.

Record the unobstructed floor depth from the corner outward. Mark the cabinet’s front edge with tape and draw the door’s expected arc. If the door opens into a walkway, desk or chair, the cabinet may be technically small enough but functionally unusable. A shallow cabinet is not automatically a corner fit if its door needs more room than the aisle provides.

Measure height and the route into the room
Measure from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction, including a ceiling beam, picture rail or sprinkler pipe. Tall units also need a safe tipping margin while being stood upright. Check the package and assembled dimensions against stair turns, lift doors and the room entrance before ordering.
Plan an anchor point
Every tall display cabinet should be level and secured to a suitable wall or structural surface. Identify the wall type (stud, masonry or another construction) before selecting an anchor. Leave enough access behind or beside the unit to install the restraint without pressing the cabinet against the wall.
Best compact choice: IKEA BLÅLIDEN
BLÅLIDEN is the most space-efficient current option in the documented comparison. IKEA lists it at 35 cm wide × 32 cm deep × 151 cm high. That footprint suits a narrow corner where a deeper tower would obstruct circulation.

Best wider narrow-tower format: Detolf dimensions
A Detolf-format cabinet remains useful when you want more shelf width than a compact case provides without moving to a deep bookcase. The documented exterior measurement is approximately 43 cm wide × 37 cm deep × 163 cm high. The usable interior is about 38.5 cm wide × 33 cm deep.
How the interior is arranged
The standard layout has four shelves, creating five compartments. Typical clearance is about 28 cm per compartment, enough for many standard figures and models but not every large statue or boxed set. Removing or repositioning shelves can create a taller bay when the hardware and replacement parts for your particular unit allow it.

Production runs, assembly tolerances and aftermarket parts can change the effective dimensions. If you are buying a second-hand unit, measure the actual glass opening, shelf supports and frame before ordering inserts. Use the 43 × 37 × 163 cm figures as a planning reference, not a guarantee for every used cabinet.
When this format is preferable
Pick the Detolf format when an extra 8 cm of width and roughly 5 cm of usable depth will improve how figures stand or how many you can display per shelf. It is less suitable for an extremely tight corner, a narrow passage or a room where the additional depth blocks furniture clearance.

Choosing by collection size and object shape
For standard figures and small models
Start with shelf width and depth, then check vertical clearance. A cabinet can have enough total height while still forcing a tall figure into an awkward compartment. Leave a small handling margin above each item so it can be removed without scraping the glass or underside of the shelf.
For mixed-height collections
Movable shelves are more valuable than a nominally taller cabinet if your collection changes often. Place the tallest item first, set the shelf above it, and use the remaining levels for shorter pieces. Keep dense objects on separate shelves when the maker publishes a load limit.
For boxed collectibles
Measure the box diagonal as well as its width and depth. Door frames reduce the opening compared with the internal shelf area, and a box that fits diagonally may not pass through the door when held upright. Leave room to rotate the package during loading.
For oversized statues or dioramas

Glass, visibility and lighting decisions
Tempered glass
Tempered panels are used throughout BLÅLIDEN, including the sides, back, door and shelves. Even tempered glass can fail if an edge is struck, so carry panels by their frame or broad face and keep metal tools away from the corners during assembly.
Clear versus mirrored presentation
Clear sides make a corner display readable from more than one angle. A reflective back can visually deepen a collection but may also reveal cables, dust and the room behind the cabinet. Decide whether your priority is photographing the display, viewing it from a desk or maximizing the sense of depth.
Lighting and cable routing
BLÅLIDEN is prepared for integrated-lighting cable management. Route wires before loading the shelves, keep connectors away from pinch points and leave a service loop so a light can be replaced without dismantling the entire display. Do not let a cable pull the cabinet out of level.
Safe assembly, loading and anchoring

- Inspect the parts. Check glass panes, shelf supports, fasteners and the door before assembly. Do not install a chipped or cracked pane.
- Assemble on a protected, level surface. Use the specified hardware and avoid twisting the frame while tightening screws.
- Level the cabinet in its final position. A spirit level across the front and side helps prevent door binding and uneven shelf loading.
- Install the wall restraint. Select hardware suited to the wall construction and attach it to a structural fixing point where possible. Follow the maker’s anchoring instructions.
- Fit shelves evenly. Confirm every support is fully seated, then distribute objects instead of placing the heaviest items on one level.
- Test the door and stability. Open the door through its full travel, check that the cabinet does not rock, and verify that the anchor remains tight before adding valuable pieces.
Glass-handling precautions
- Keep glass edges off concrete, tile corners and metal tools.
- Use two people for tall panels and for standing the assembled frame upright.
- Do not slam the door or allow a shelf to rest on an unlatched support.
- Keep children and pets away while the cabinet is unanchored or partly assembled.
Adding shelves, risers and inserts
“Detolf-compatible acrylic shelves” is a useful search phrase for replacement shelves, tiered risers and inserts cut to the Detolf interior format. Acrylic can add display levels without the weight of another glass panel, but compatibility is not universal.

What to verify before ordering an insert
- Measure the actual internal width and depth of your cabinet, not just the model name.
- Check the shelf’s thickness and how it sits on the supports.
- Confirm edge finish and corner shape so the insert does not contact the glass frame.
- Verify the accessory’s stated load and keep heavy pieces on the original shelves when the manufacturer does not specify a rating.
For a used Detolf-format unit, remeasure after assembly because frame alignment and replacement hardware can change the opening by a small but important amount. Acrylic risers are especially useful when a single 28 cm compartment contains several short figures that would otherwise be hidden behind the front row.
Common fit problems and fixes
The cabinet fits, but the door hits furniture
Move the tape outline through the full door arc before assembly. If the swing overlaps a desk or chair, rotate the cabinet only if the new orientation still permits anchoring and does not place the glass against a traffic path. Otherwise choose the shallower footprint.
Tall pieces touch the shelf above
Measure the item with its base and any raised accessories. On a movable-shelf model, relocate one shelf to create a taller compartment. On a fixed-layout unit, remove a shelf only when the manufacturer or compatible hardware supports that change; never rest a shelf on improvised blocks.

The frame rocks or the door will not align
Unload the cabinet, check the floor and frame diagonals, then level it before adjusting the door hardware. Anchoring a twisted or unlevel cabinet can transfer stress to the glass and hinges.
A shelf is overloaded
Use the published limit where one exists: BLÅLIDEN’s maximum is 3 kg per shelf. Weigh or estimate the combined load, move dense objects to separate levels and remove anything that causes visible deflection. Do not treat a shelf’s apparent stiffness as proof of a higher safe capacity.
Dust and reflections reduce visibility
Leave a small service gap where the design permits, clean with a soft cloth and non-abrasive cleaner, and route lighting cables behind the frame. Avoid abrasive pads that can haze clear panels and avoid spraying liquid directly near electrical connectors.
A practical selection checklist
- Maximum measured width, depth and height, including trim and door swing.
- Largest object dimensions, including bases, handles and antennas.
- Required clear height for each shelf, not just total cabinet height.
- Published shelf load and the estimated weight of each display level.
- Wall type and a realistic anchor location.
- Door direction, walkway clearance and access for cleaning.
