Tom’s Guide recorded 15 hours 24 minutes in its laboratory battery test on a 15-inch Snapdragon X2 Plus configuration with 16 GB of memory and 512 GB of storage. The review also found writing, email, spreadsheets, and multiple browser tabs responsive.
That result is not a guaranteed runtime, and the Arm processor makes compatibility a personal decision. Check every specialist application, game, driver, and peripheral you need before buying. If any essential item is uncertain, an Intel Core Ultra 200V or AMD Ryzen AI 300 Copilot+ PC is the lower-uncertainty route. Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 13.8-inch (8th Edition) has a manufacturer claim of up to 20 hours, but that figure is for local video playback on preproduction hardware and cannot be ranked directly against the Lenovo laboratory result.

What makes a PC a Copilot+ PC?
Microsoft describes Copilot+ PCs as Windows computers with a neural processing unit (NPU) capable of 40 trillion operations per second. The NPU is designed for local AI work such as Cocreator, Image Creator, live-caption translation, and camera or audio effects. It is a hardware capability threshold, not a promise that every model has the same processor speed, graphics performance, battery life, or application compatibility.
Microsoft’s business-device matrix lists current availability for the main Copilot+ feature groups across Snapdragon X, Intel Core Ultra 200V, and AMD Ryzen AI 300 systems. Wave 1 includes Live Captions, Windows Studio Effects, and a Recall preview with IT controls. Wave 2 includes Click to Do and improved Windows search. Windows version, language, region, device configuration, and rollout status can affect what appears on a particular machine, so verify the feature in the edition you intend to buy.
| Feature group in Microsoft’s matrix | Snapdragon X | Intel Core Ultra 200V | AMD Ryzen AI 300 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live Captions | Available now on the accessed matrix | Available now on the accessed matrix | Available now on the accessed matrix |
| Windows Studio Effects | Available now on the accessed matrix | Available now on the accessed matrix | Available now on the accessed matrix |

| Click to Do | Available now on the accessed matrix | Available now on the accessed matrix | Available now on the accessed matrix |
| Improved Windows search | Available now on the accessed matrix | Available now on the accessed matrix | Available now on the accessed matrix |
The common NPU label therefore tells you that local AI processing is supported; it does not tell you which laptop is faster in Word, a spreadsheet, a browser, a video call, or a specialized engineering application.
Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5x Gen 11: the evidence-backed everyday pick
Configuration tested
Tom’s Guide’s 2026-10-08 Windows-laptop guide lists the 15-inch IdeaPad Slim 5x Gen 11 with Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Plus X2P42100, integrated Qualcomm Adreno graphics, 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB of storage, a 1,920 × 1,200 LCD touchscreen, and a 3.1-pound weight. Lenovo’s 2026 datasheet identifies the 15-inch, 11th-generation family as a Copilot+ PC with Snapdragon X2 Plus.
Confirm that a store listing uses this same generation and configuration. Product-family names can cover multiple displays, memory capacities, storage devices, and regional keyboards. A different SKU may not deliver the tested weight or runtime.
Battery result and what it means
The measured result was 15 hours 24 minutes on a full charge in Tom’s Guide’s laboratory test. That is the most useful battery number in this guide because it comes from an independent review of a defined retail configuration. It remains a test result rather than a promise of typical use: brightness, wireless activity, browser tabs, calls, background synchronization, power mode, and software updates all change runtime.
Lenovo separately cautions that battery life depends on configuration, software, wireless use, power settings, and screen brightness. Those variables explain why two IdeaPad Slim 5x units with the same family name can behave differently.

Everyday responsiveness
Tom’s Guide found the tested system responsive for writing, email, spreadsheets, and multiple browser tabs. That is the kind of evidence that matters for school, office, and home work. It does not establish performance in a particular 3D game, a professional plug-in, a virtual machine, or a hardware-specific utility.

Who should buy it
- People who value a long independent battery result and a relatively light 15-inch touchscreen.
- Students and office users whose work is concentrated in browser applications, documents, mail, and spreadsheets.
- Buyers willing to verify that their essential Windows software and accessories work on Arm.
Who should choose something else
- Anyone whose most important program has no confirmed Arm64 support and behaves poorly under emulation.
- Users dependent on a particular printer, scanner, audio interface, security token, game anti-cheat system, or other device driver that has not been validated for the machine.
- Buyers who need a specific port arrangement that the selected IdeaPad configuration does not provide.
Microsoft Surface Laptop 13.8-inch (8th Edition): interpret the 20-hour claim correctly
Microsoft reports up to 20 hours of local video playback for the 13.8-inch Surface Laptop (8th Edition). The May 2026 test used preproduction software and preproduction hardware with Snapdragon X2 Plus, 16 GB of RAM, and 512 GB of storage.
Local video playback is a tightly controlled, relatively steady workload. It is not equivalent to browsing, writing, spreadsheet calculation, video meetings, or a mixed office day. The Surface figure should therefore be used as a manufacturer endurance ceiling under that stated procedure, not as proof that it lasts longer than the Lenovo in normal work.
Microsoft’s own disclosure is appropriately cautious: “Battery life varies significantly with settings, usage, and other factors.” Treat that sentence as applying to every advertised runtime, including the Surface claim.
How to compare battery claims without being misled
Battery numbers are meaningful only when you know who measured them, on what hardware, with which workload, and under what settings. Keep the following results separate rather than sorting them into one leaderboard.
| Figure | Measured by | Workload and hardware context | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 hours 24 minutes | Tom’s Guide, 2026-10-08 guide | Laboratory battery test of the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5x Gen 11, Snapdragon X2 Plus, 16 GB, 512 GB, 15-inch configuration | Best independent evidence for the named Lenovo configuration; not a guarantee for every user or SKU |
| Up to 20 hours | Microsoft, May 2026 | Local video playback on preproduction 13.8-inch Surface Laptop hardware and software with Snapdragon X2 Plus, 16 GB, 512 GB | Manufacturer estimate under a specific playback procedure; do not rank directly against the Lenovo result |
| Up to 19 hours of web browsing | Microsoft Learn, March 2026 | Selected preproduction 2026 Copilot+ systems using Microsoft’s specified web-browsing procedure | A selection-based claim, not a result for every retail Copilot+ PC |
Microsoft also reports up to 55% faster multi-core performance in selected comparisons, up to 2.5 times the graphics and AI performance versus selected 2024 Copilot+ PCs, and up to 3.3 times the web-browsing battery life versus selected five-year-old Windows PCs. These are controlled comparisons against named reference groups, not independent head-to-head rankings of the laptops in this guide.
Should you buy an Arm-based Windows laptop?
Arm is a good fit when your software list is mainstream and you prioritize efficiency. Many everyday Windows applications run, but support and speed can differ for niche software, games, drivers, and peripherals. Compatibility is not a theoretical issue: one unsupported driver or plug-in can matter more than several extra hours of battery life.
Use this compatibility check before ordering
- Write down every must-have application. Include accounting tools, VPN clients, browser extensions, development environments, creative plug-ins, virtual machines, enterprise security agents, and games—not only the applications you open daily.
- Identify the architecture. Look for an official Arm64 build from the software publisher. An x64 application may run through Windows emulation, but the publisher’s support policy and performance can differ.
- Check peripherals by exact model. Verify drivers and firmware for printers, scanners, audio interfaces, drawing tablets, capture devices, smart-card readers, docks, and specialized instruments.
- Check game requirements. Confirm both the game and its anti-cheat or launcher components. A game that starts is not necessarily a game that performs acceptably or remains supported.
- Ask your employer or school about managed software. Device-management, security, and authentication components can be stricter than consumer applications.
- Set a fallback. If one essential item remains uncertain, choose an Intel- or AMD-based Copilot+ PC instead of assuming an update will resolve the issue.
When every critical item is confirmed, the Lenovo’s independent battery result makes Arm attractive. When even one critical dependency is unresolved, compatibility certainty is usually worth more than a theoretical endurance advantage.
When Intel or AMD is the safer Copilot+ choice
Microsoft’s current processor matrix includes Intel Core Ultra 200V and AMD Ryzen AI 300 systems alongside Snapdragon X. These platforms can provide the same broad Copilot+ feature categories shown in the matrix, subject to Windows version, language, region, configuration, and rollout.

- BUILT FOR AI – Powered by a 45 TOPS NPU, this AI-driven Copilot+ PC crushes multitasking, smooths video calls, and lasts all day.
The reason to choose Intel or AMD is not that their NPU label is automatically better. It is that x86 software, drivers, and hardware tools may be a lower-risk match for a workload built around long-established Windows compatibility. You still need to verify the exact laptop, because a processor family does not determine its screen, cooling, ports, memory, storage, or battery result.
Choose Intel or AMD when
- Your work depends on a vendor utility, plug-in, driver, or anti-cheat system with uncertain Arm support.
- You use older x86 software that is business-critical and cannot be replaced or tested first.
- You need a particular dock, expansion card, laboratory device, or professional peripheral.
- You prefer to trade some potential efficiency for a more familiar compatibility path.
Do not choose by NPU number alone
NPU operations per second describe an AI accelerator. They do not measure CPU responsiveness, graphics frame rates, SSD speed, fan noise, display quality, or battery life. Compare independent reviews using your actual workload wherever possible.
Choose the exact configuration, not just the product name
Before paying, match the configuration in the review to the listing in your region. Record the following items and reject a listing that leaves a decision-critical specification unclear.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Processor and generation: Confirm Snapdragon X2 Plus, Intel Core Ultra 200V, or AMD Ryzen AI 300 as applicable, plus the exact model number.
- Memory: The tested Lenovo and Surface configurations use 16 GB. More demanding multitasking, development, or creative work may require a higher-memory option if one exists.
- Storage: Both named configurations use 512 GB. Account for operating-system space, local media, games, and work files before deciding that capacity is sufficient.
- Display: The Lenovo evidence applies to a 15-inch, 1,920 × 1,200 LCD touchscreen. A different panel can change brightness, weight, and battery behavior.
- Weight: The reviewed Lenovo configuration is 3.1 pounds. Do not assume every screen or battery option weighs the same.
- Ports and wireless: Count the connectors you need for charging, displays, wired networking, storage, audio, and peripherals. Port layouts can differ by configuration and market.
- Operating-system edition: Business management controls and feature rollout can vary between editions and organizational policies.
Ports, docks, and when a USB-C hub helps
A USB-C hub is not a universal requirement. It is useful when the laptop’s built-in ports do not cover your real connections—for example, when you need an additional display output, full-size USB, wired networking, or a memory-card reader at the same time.
- List the devices you connect simultaneously, not just occasionally.
- Compare that list with the exact laptop’s port specification and display-output limits.
- Check whether charging occupies the only high-speed USB-C port.
- Only then select a hub or dock whose operating-system and display requirements match the laptop.
Buying a hub first can hide a mismatch rather than solve it. Tom’s Guide’s accessory guidance is conditional for this reason: thin laptops often have fewer ports, but the need depends on the chosen model and the reader’s equipment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What everyday performance should you expect?
For the tested Lenovo, published observations cover writing, email, spreadsheets, and multiple browser tabs. Those tasks are a better indicator of ordinary usability than an NPU headline. A Copilot+ label does not guarantee that a lower-power configuration will feel identical to a larger, actively cooled system in sustained compiling, rendering, or gaming.
Use a workload-based checklist when reading a review or evaluating a return window:
- Open the number of browser tabs you normally keep and include your password manager and extensions.
- Run a representative document and spreadsheet rather than an empty benchmark file.
- Join a video call while screen sharing if that is part of your routine.
- Test sleep, wake, external-display output, audio, camera, and any dock you depend on.
- Observe fan behavior and responsiveness after an hour of sustained work, not only immediately after startup.
Microsoft’s selected-system claims of up to 55% faster multi-core performance and up to 19 hours of web browsing are useful context for the generation, but they do not replace testing the exact retail model and configuration.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing unlike battery tests
Do not place the Surface’s up-to-20-hour local-video figure beside the Lenovo’s 15-hour-24-minute laboratory result and declare a winner. The workloads, hardware status, and procedures differ. Keep each qualification attached to its number.
Assuming every Snapdragon laptop is the same
Screen resolution, memory, storage, firmware, brightness, wireless radios, and power modes alter endurance. Use the tested SKU, not only the processor family.
Treating Copilot+ as a speed guarantee
The NPU threshold enables local AI features. It does not establish CPU, GPU, storage, or application performance. Read workload-specific reviews.

Buying on a manufacturer maximum alone
Words such as up to describe controlled conditions. Microsoft’s Surface test used preproduction systems and local video playback; your workload may involve brightness changes, wireless traffic, calls, and background tasks.
A practical buying procedure
- Define the workload. Separate light office work, creative work, development, gaming, and specialized equipment instead of calling everything everyday use.
- Build the compatibility inventory. Record applications, games, drivers, peripherals, and organizational security tools.
- Choose the architecture. Select the Lenovo Arm configuration only when the inventory is confirmed; otherwise start with Intel or AMD Copilot+ models.
- Match the tested SKU. Compare processor model, RAM, SSD, display, weight, and ports with the published configuration.
- Interpret battery evidence. Prefer independent results with a named workload, and keep manufacturer video-playback claims separate.
- Check regional availability. Confirm keyboard layout, warranty, operating-system edition, and the actual configuration sold in your market.
- Test immediately. Install required applications, connect every essential peripheral, update firmware, and run a normal work session while the return option remains available.
How strong is the evidence for this shortlist?
The Lenovo recommendation is supported by an independent 2026 review with a named configuration, a measured runtime, and observations of ordinary productivity use. The Surface endurance figure is official Microsoft testing with clear preproduction and local-video qualifications. Microsoft’s processor matrix is useful for feature availability, while its performance and battery disclosures are selection-based comparisons rather than a complete independent ranking.
That evidence supports a focused buying decision, not a claim that these are the only good Copilot+ PCs sold in every market. Retail inventory, regional configurations, pricing, and future Windows feature rollouts can change. Recheck the listing and the software-support status immediately before purchase.
