For most Android-tablet owners, choose the Microsoft Xbox Wireless Controller. Valve lists the Xbox One S Controller among Steam Link’s supported gamepads, and Microsoft’s documentation confirms that the current Xbox Wireless Controller connects to Android tablets over Bluetooth. It offers the lowest compatibility risk, familiar Xbox button prompts and a simple pairing process.
Choose the 8BitDo Pro 2 Bluetooth Gamepad instead if remapping, multiple device targets or a different stick layout matter more than absolute plug-and-play simplicity. Its Steam support depends on using the correct D-input/Bluetooth mode, and firmware or Android behavior can vary by revision.

Which controller should you buy?
The right choice is determined less by maximum specifications than by three practical questions: will Android pair with it reliably, will Steam Input expose the buttons correctly, and does the layout feel natural for the games you play?

Why the Xbox Wireless Controller is the safest default
Official support lines up with the way Steam Link is used
Valve’s Steam Link Android support information names the Xbox One S Controller as a supported controller. Microsoft’s product documentation for the current Xbox Wireless Controller says it can connect wirelessly to Windows 10/11 PCs, tablets, iOS and Android through Bluetooth. Those statements cover the two parts that matter here: the tablet can discover the controller, and Steam Link is designed to accept the Xbox family layout.
The controller’s ABXY labels and familiar offset analog sticks also match the prompts shown by many PC games. Steam Input can translate controller signals, but games that display Xbox-style prompts generally require less interpretation than titles expecting a generic DirectInput pad.
What you give up
This is a conventional full-size controller, not a tablet clamp. Put the tablet on a desk, use a case stand, or add a separate tablet holder; do not expect the controller itself to support the tablet’s weight. The controller normally uses two AA batteries. Microsoft’s 2020 product documentation quotes up to 40 hours of battery life, while warning that actual life varies with usage and accessories. Treat that figure as a manufacturer maximum, not a guaranteed session time.

When the 8BitDo Pro 2 makes more sense
Configuration and device flexibility
The Pro 2 is attractive when one controller must serve a tablet, a computer and other devices, or when you want remapped buttons and saved profiles. 8BitDo’s Steam compatibility guidance specifies D-input/Bluetooth mode for Steam. Its Android FAQ documents Bluetooth use for its Android-compatible controller families, which establishes the connection method but does not make every Pro 2 revision identical.
Check the exact mode before troubleshooting
Mode selection is the most common source of confusion. A Pro 2 can be paired successfully while presenting an input mode that a particular game does not handle as expected. Confirm the mode shown in the controller’s manual, install current firmware using 8BitDo’s supported updater, and then pair again after changing modes. The exact behavior of button labels, rumble and gyro data can vary with the controller revision, Android manufacturer and game.
Choose the Pro 2 when those configuration options solve a real problem. If you simply want to connect and play, the Xbox controller’s more predictable Xbox-style identity is easier.

Android tablet and network requirements
Android version and app availability
Valve says the Steam Link app extends to many Android phones, tablets and TVs running Android 5.0 and newer. That is a baseline, not a promise that every tablet will perform identically. Check that your tablet can install the current Steam Link app, has working Bluetooth, and receives security and system updates from its manufacturer.
Android’s Bluetooth menus differ by manufacturer. The labels may be Connected devices, Connections or simply Bluetooth. Pair the controller at the operating-system level first; Steam Link can then use the established input device.
Streaming quality is separate from controller compatibility
A controller can be perfectly paired while the stream still feels delayed. Valve’s setup guidance calls out a 5 GHz wireless router for a better Steam Link setup. This is a network recommendation, not a requirement of the controller. Keep the tablet within strong 5 GHz coverage, reduce congestion where possible, and remember that a fast controller connection cannot compensate for a weak streaming link.

- Place the tablet where the wireless signal is stable rather than at the edge of coverage.
- Diagnose network latency separately from button or pairing failures.
Bluetooth versus USB on an Android tablet
Bluetooth is the normal path
Bluetooth avoids a cable from the controller to the tablet and is the documented connection method for the Xbox Wireless Controller and the Android-compatible 8BitDo families. Pair once in Android settings, then reconnect before opening a game. Turn off or disconnect the controller from another nearby device if it keeps reconnecting to the wrong host.
USB can work, but the tablet must support it
A wired connection may be useful when Bluetooth is congested or the controller’s battery is low. Android tablets generally need a USB host connection, often through a USB-C OTG adapter or a hub, and the controller must expose a mode Android and Steam Input recognize. Support is not universal: a tablet may provide power without accepting the controller’s data, or Android may expose the pad under a generic identity. Because compatibility depends on the tablet, adapter, cable and controller mode, treat USB as a fallback to verify on your exact hardware rather than an automatic upgrade.

How to set up the Xbox Wireless Controller
- Update everything. Install available Android system updates, update the Steam Link app, and update the controller through an Xbox-compatible device if Microsoft’s updater offers one.
- Enter pairing mode. Turn on the controller, then hold its pairing button until the Xbox light flashes.
- Open Android Bluetooth settings. Use the tablet’s Settings app, open the Bluetooth or Connected devices page, choose Pair new device, and select the Xbox controller when it appears.
- Accept the pairing request. Wait for Android to show the controller as connected. If it does not appear, power-cycle the controller and temporarily disable Bluetooth on devices that previously used it.
- Launch Steam Link. Start the app after Android reports the connection. Follow Steam Link’s controller-check screen and move each stick or press each face button to verify input.
- Check Steam Input for the game. If the app menus respond but a game does not, open that game’s controller layout or Steam Input settings and confirm that an appropriate layout is active.
How to set up the 8BitDo Pro 2
- Confirm the intended mode. For Steam, 8BitDo’s compatibility guidance calls for D-input/Bluetooth mode. Use the Pro 2 manual for the exact button combination for your revision.
- Update firmware. Apply the current firmware offered for the exact Pro 2 model, then restart the controller. Firmware differences can change pairing and feature behavior.
- Pair from Android. In Settings, open Bluetooth, choose Pair new device, put the controller in its Android-compatible Bluetooth mode, and select it from the device list.
- Run Steam Link’s input test. Confirm sticks, triggers, bumpers and the D-pad before launching a game.
- Select or create a Steam Input layout. If a title expects another controller type, choose a layout that maps the Pro 2’s inputs to the game’s expected controls.
- Re-pair after changing modes. Android can retain an old identity. Remove the saved controller entry, restart Bluetooth, and pair again if the new mode is not recognized.
Steam Input, DirectInput and game-specific behavior
Steamworks documentation explains that Steam continually updates device support and accepts DirectInput gamepads. Steam Input can apply a global or per-game mapping, which is why a controller can work in the Steam Link interface but fail after a game starts.
What the different symptoms mean
- No controller in Android Bluetooth: the pad is not in pairing mode, is connected to another device, has a low battery, or the tablet’s Bluetooth stack needs restarting.
- Android says connected, but Steam Link sees nothing: the controller may be presenting an unsupported mode, or Steam Link was opened before the pairing completed. Close and reopen the app, then test again.
- Menus work but one game ignores input: inspect that game’s Steam Input override and controller layout. The title may expect Xbox-style input while the pad is exposing DirectInput, or vice versa.
- Buttons are swapped: select a different layout, check the controller’s mode, and look for an in-game controller-remapping screen.
- Rumble or gyro is missing: basic button input can work even when a particular Android implementation or game does not expose those features.
- Intermittent delay: compare a local controller test with streamed gameplay. If button tests are immediate but gameplay is delayed, investigate the 5 GHz network and host-PC connection rather than replacing the controller.
Use per-game overrides deliberately
Do not change global mappings to fix one title unless you want that change everywhere. Open the game’s controller settings, enable the appropriate Steam Input configuration, test the layout in a low-risk menu, and save only after every essential control responds. A title that already recognizes the Xbox layout may work best with the default profile, while a DirectInput-only game may need a custom mapping.
Ergonomics, battery and tablet support
Grip and stick layout
The Xbox Wireless Controller uses the familiar offset-stick Xbox arrangement and a full-size grip. It suits long sessions and games designed around Xbox prompts, but its size adds weight when the tablet is already on your lap. The Pro 2 offers a different arrangement and profile system; choose it only after confirming that its stick and D-pad placement suits the genres you play.
Power planning
The Xbox controller’s published figure is up to 40 hours on AA batteries, measured in Microsoft’s 2020 product documentation, with actual life dependent on usage and accessories. Keep spare AAs available or use a compatible rechargeable solution if you play away from an outlet. For the Pro 2, follow the battery and charging instructions for the exact revision; do not assume that behavior from another 8BitDo model applies unchanged.
Holding the tablet
Neither recommended controller is a universal tablet mount. A stand keeps the screen at a comfortable angle and prevents the controller cable or your hands from supporting the tablet. For a large tablet, a desk stand is usually more stable than balancing the device on your knees. If you buy a clamp or holder, verify its width and weight rating for your case and tablet before use.
A practical buying decision
- Pick Xbox first if you want standard Xbox prompts, the fewest mode decisions and the clearest documented path from Android Bluetooth to Steam Link.
- Pick Pro 2 if remapping, multiple saved profiles or use across several device types outweighs the need for a more carefully verified setup.
- Use an existing controller only after checking its Android pairing mode and testing the exact games you intend to stream. Generic compatibility claims do not guarantee identical prompts, rumble or gyro support.
- Plan the tablet position before buying. A reliable controller still needs a safe, readable screen setup.
Checklist before your first streamed session
- Tablet runs Android 5.0 or newer and can install the current Steam Link app.
- Controller firmware and tablet software are current.
- Controller is paired in Android Bluetooth settings, not only inside Steam Link.
- Steam Link’s controller test sees every stick, trigger, button and D-pad direction.
- Steam Input is enabled or overridden appropriately for the game.
- Tablet uses a stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection where possible.
- A stand or other support keeps the tablet secure and at a comfortable viewing angle.
- Spare batteries or a charging plan are available for the session.
Bottom line: Xbox for certainty, Pro 2 for control
The Microsoft Xbox Wireless Controller is the best all-around recommendation for Steam Link on an Android tablet because Valve and Microsoft document the relevant Steam Link and Android Bluetooth support, and its Xbox layout is widely understood by games and Steam Input. The 8BitDo Pro 2 is the better specialist choice for remapping and multi-device flexibility, provided you select the correct D-input/Bluetooth mode and verify the exact firmware and Android behavior. In either case, pairing in Android first, checking Steam Input per game and using a strong 5 GHz network will prevent more problems than switching between controllers at random.
