Best Controllers for Playing Xbox Games on a Smart TV

For most people, the Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth is the safest starting point for Xbox cloud gaming on a smart TV. Xbox names it in its LG TV setup guidance and generally supports Xbox and PlayStation controllers on supported TV devices. The PlayStation DualSense is a credible alternative, while the Xbox Adaptive Controller and Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 suit specific accessibility or configuration needs.

That recommendation only applies after you confirm that your exact television or streaming device supports the Xbox app. Xbox games are streamed through the app; a generic smart TV and a generic Bluetooth gamepad are not automatically compatible.

What “playing Xbox on a smart TV” means

This guide covers cloud gaming through the Xbox app on a supported television or streaming device. The game runs on Xbox servers and the TV displays the stream, while your controller sends input over Bluetooth or USB. It is not a claim that smart TVs install and run Xbox console games locally.

An Xbox console is not part of the basic cloud-gaming setup described by Xbox. You need a supported device, an available region, an eligible Game Pass subscription or an eligible free-to-play title, a compatible controller, and a suitable network connection. Xbox lists the current requirements on its Xbox Cloud Gaming page.

  • VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.

Because support is model-, operating-system-, firmware- and region-specific, the first buying decision is not the controller. It is whether the screen you plan to use can run the Xbox app at all.

Quick comparison: which controller fits which player?

Controller Why consider it Connection and support notes Important limitation
Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth Most familiar choice for Xbox menus and button labels; the primary recommendation for a general user. Named in Xbox’s LG smart-TV setup guidance. Xbox also describes Xbox controllers as supported on compatible TV setups. Verify the exact controller revision and your TV or streaming device’s Bluetooth or USB support.
PlayStation DualSense Good alternative if you already prefer PlayStation’s shape and layout. Named by Xbox as a Bluetooth-enabled option in its LG TV setup examples. Button symbols and labels differ from the Xbox layout, which can make prompts less intuitive.
Xbox Adaptive Controller Useful when a standard gamepad does not match a player’s mobility or access needs. Listed by Xbox among LG TV cloud-gaming examples. The practical setup depends on the player, switches, mounts and other accessories; it is not a universal plug-and-play answer.
Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 For players who specifically need a more configurable Xbox controller. Listed as an LG TV example by Xbox. The cited guidance does not establish that its extra controls improve cloud performance or that every TV supports every function.
DualShock 4 An additional option for people who already own one. Xbox’s LG setup instructions mention it as compatible with LG TV cloud gaming. Confirm current model, firmware and pairing requirements before buying one solely for TV use.

This is a compatibility and usability comparison, not a laboratory ranking. The available Xbox guidance does not provide comparative measurements for latency, comfort, battery life, durability or price, so those factors should not be presented as proven winners for one model.

Check your TV before buying a controller

Xbox’s Xbox on TVs page lists selected—not universal—devices. The current scope includes selected Samsung smart TVs, LG televisions running webOS 24 or newer, select Fire TV devices, and select VIDAA OS televisions, including certain Hisense models running VIDAA OS 9.6 or higher.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LG televisions

LG support is tied to webOS 24 or newer, with some 2022 and 2023 models becoming eligible after the specified software update. An LG television that looks similar to a supported model can still be excluded if it has an older operating system, a different regional firmware build or an update that has not been installed.

Samsung televisions

Xbox describes Samsung availability as limited to selected models. Do not treat the presence of a Samsung app store or Bluetooth as proof that the Xbox app is available. Check the live Xbox compatibility information for your exact model and region.

Fire TV devices

The official FAQ identifies compatible examples including Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st generation and 2nd generation), Fire TV Cube (3rd generation), and Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd generation). These are device-generation examples, not a blanket approval for every Fire TV product.

Region and availability

Cloud-gaming access, supported game libraries and app availability can change by country. Before ordering, open Xbox’s current TV page and FAQ, search for the exact model number, and confirm that the Xbox app and cloud gaming are offered in your location. The official FAQ is available at Xbox on TVs FAQ.

Why the Xbox Wireless Controller is the default pick

The Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth is the least surprising choice for a player who wants Xbox-style controls. Its face-button letters match the prompts used by Xbox games, and Xbox explicitly includes the Bluetooth-enabled Xbox Wireless Controller in its LG TV setup examples. Xbox’s broader TV guidance also refers to Xbox controllers among supported choices.

Buy it only after checking the connection method your device accepts. Xbox says compatible controllers can connect by Bluetooth or USB, but the presence of a USB port or Bluetooth radio on a television does not independently prove that every controller model will work. Use the verified controller information linked from the current Xbox TV guidance, and check the individual controller listing for Bluetooth capability.

Best fit

  • Players who want Xbox button labels and familiar menu navigation.
  • Households buying one general-purpose controller for cloud gaming.
  • Users who want the clearest match to Xbox’s own LG setup instructions.

What the recommendation does not prove

It does not prove lower latency, longer battery life, greater comfort or better durability than the alternatives. Those would require controlled comparative testing that is not established by the cited Xbox pages.

When a PlayStation controller makes sense

Xbox’s LG instructions name the Bluetooth-enabled PlayStation DualSense, and they also mention the DualShock 4. That gives existing PlayStation owners a path to use hardware they already understand rather than buying an Xbox-branded pad.

Xbox Wireless Gaming Controller | Deep Pink | Textured triggers and bumpers, Hybrid D-pad, XBOX Wireless, Bluetooth, USB-C, Play across Console & PC & Cloud Devices
  • MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
  • PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.

The main trade-off is language, not a measured performance difference. Xbox games display Xbox button prompts, while DualSense and DualShock 4 use PlayStation symbols. You can learn the mapping, but a player who relies on letter prompts may find the Xbox controller more immediately clear.

Choose DualSense if

  • Your supported LG setup recognizes the controller and you already prefer its layout.
  • You are comfortable translating Xbox prompts to PlayStation symbols.
  • You want a named alternative without assuming that all Bluetooth gamepads are supported.

Verify before relying on DualShock 4

DualShock 4 appears in the LG-specific setup instructions, not as a promise that every supported Samsung, Fire TV or VIDAA device accepts it. Confirm the pairing method and current compatibility for your television or streaming device before purchase.

Specialized choices: Adaptive and Elite controllers

Xbox Adaptive Controller

Xbox lists the Adaptive Controller among examples for LG TV cloud gaming. It is the relevant option when a conventional two-stick gamepad cannot be comfortably operated. Its usefulness depends on the player’s movement, mounting position, switches, foot controls and other accessories. A television connection alone does not determine whether a complete accessible setup will work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying, list the inputs the player can reliably make, identify any external switches or mounts required, and confirm that the chosen TV or streaming device supports the controller connection you intend to use. Treat the Adaptive Controller as a configurable system rather than a universal replacement for a standard pad.

Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2

Xbox includes the Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 in its LG examples. It is appropriate when you specifically want configurable controls or already own one. However, the available Xbox material does not establish that the additional controls improve cloud-gaming latency, image quality or game performance. It also does not guarantee that every TV exposes every advanced function.

Choose it for a known configuration requirement, not because “Elite” is evidence of better streaming quality.

Use this decision framework before checkout

  1. Identify the exact screen. Record the television model number, operating-system version and region. If you use a streaming stick or box, record its generation instead.
  2. Confirm the Xbox app. Check the current Xbox on TVs page and FAQ for that exact device. If it is not listed, do not assume that Bluetooth support will make the app appear.
  3. Choose the control layout. Select the Xbox Wireless Controller if Xbox letters and prompts matter most; consider DualSense or DualShock 4 if you already prefer PlayStation controls and your device explicitly supports them.
  4. Account for access needs. If a standard pad is unsuitable, evaluate the Adaptive Controller together with required switches and mounting hardware. If you need remapping or extra physical controls, evaluate the Elite model, while recognizing that advanced functions may vary by device.
  5. Check the connection path. Xbox identifies Bluetooth and USB as connection methods for compatible controllers. Verify which one your TV or streaming device supports before ordering.
  6. Confirm service eligibility. Make sure your region, Game Pass plan or eligible free-to-play title and device meet Xbox’s current cloud-gaming requirements.

Cloud-gaming requirements beyond the controller

A compatible gamepad cannot compensate for an unsupported app or inadequate network. Xbox’s cloud-gaming guidance requires a supported device and region, an eligible Game Pass subscription or an eligible free-to-play title, and a compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For connectivity, Xbox recommends wired networking or 5 GHz Wi-Fi on its TV guidance. It recommends at least 20 Mbps, and the cloud-gaming page notes that some devices may require 20 Mbps for best quality. This is a service recommendation, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee of a particular frame rate, latency or image quality.

Prepare the network

  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi when your router and device support it, or use Ethernet if the device provides a wired connection.
  • Place the TV or streaming device where its wireless signal is reliable.
  • Check that the internet connection reaches the recommended speed before diagnosing the controller.
  • Remember that location, network congestion and device behavior can affect the stream even when a speed test looks adequate.

How to set up a controller on a supported TV

Menu names vary by television, firmware and streaming device. The following sequence follows Xbox’s stated connection options without assuming an identical interface on every model.

  1. Update the TV or streaming device. Install the software update required for your model, particularly when eligibility depends on a newer webOS or VIDAA OS version.
  2. Install or open the Xbox app. Use the device’s official app store and confirm that the app is available for your model and region.
  3. Prepare the controller. Charge or power it, then place it in Bluetooth pairing mode if you are using wireless connection. If Xbox lists your setup for USB, connect a suitable cable instead.
  4. Pair through the device settings. Open the TV or streaming device’s Bluetooth controls, select the controller when it appears, and wait for the connection confirmation. For USB, wait for the device to recognize the wired controller.
  5. Launch cloud gaming in the Xbox app. Sign in with the account that has the required entitlement, or select an eligible free-to-play title where available.
  6. Test navigation before starting a long session. Confirm that the directional controls, buttons and triggers respond in the app. If prompts use Xbox letters while your controller uses symbols, keep the mapping visible until it becomes familiar.

On LG televisions, Xbox’s published setup examples specifically include the Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth, Xbox Adaptive Controller, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, DualSense and DualShock 4. Other platforms may support a different subset, so do not transfer the LG list unchanged to Samsung, Fire TV or VIDAA.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The Xbox app is missing

First verify the exact model, operating-system version and region against Xbox’s current compatibility pages. If the device is not listed, the issue is platform support rather than controller pairing. A Bluetooth gamepad cannot add an unsupported Xbox app to a television.

The controller appears but will not connect

Confirm that the controller model is on the verified compatibility information for your device, that it is in pairing mode, and that no other nearby device has already claimed the connection. If your setup supports USB, try that connection to separate a Bluetooth problem from a broader compatibility problem. Restart the pairing process after disconnecting the controller from another device.

The controller connects but buttons behave unexpectedly

Check whether the controller uses Xbox letters or PlayStation symbols. A DualSense or DualShock 4 can be recognized while still displaying prompts that do not match its printed labels. This is a layout-mapping issue, not evidence that the controller is defective.

The stream looks soft or stutters

Check the network before replacing the controller. Use wired networking or 5 GHz Wi-Fi where possible, compare your connection with Xbox’s 20 Mbps recommendation, and account for congestion, location and device limitations. Controller choice does not determine stream resolution.

An advanced controller feature does not work

Do not assume that every Elite control or accessory function is exposed by every TV app. Xbox’s compatibility examples identify supported controller families, but they do not promise identical feature support across devices. Test the specific function on your model and use a standard control path when necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud gaming is unavailable after setup

Recheck region, account entitlement and title eligibility. Xbox requires a supported region and device plus an eligible Game Pass subscription or eligible free-to-play title. A successfully paired controller does not bypass those service requirements.

What cannot be determined from official compatibility lists

Xbox’s pages establish named controller and device support, connection methods and network recommendations. They do not provide a head-to-head test of controller latency, battery endurance, ergonomics, durability, noise or price. Those attributes can vary by hardware revision, batteries, firmware, distance from the TV and the player.

For that reason, the most defensible “best” choice is conditional:

  • Best general starting point: Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth, after device verification.
  • Best familiar alternative for PlayStation owners: DualSense on a setup that explicitly supports it.
  • Best accessibility-oriented direction: Xbox Adaptive Controller, planned around the player’s complete input system.
  • Best configurable direction: Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 when its controls meet a specific need, without assuming every advanced feature works on every TV.
  • Best use of an existing controller: DualShock 4 or DualSense where Xbox’s current device guidance confirms compatibility.

Buying checklist

  • Exact TV or streaming-device model checked on Xbox’s current compatibility page.
  • Required operating-system update installed.
  • Xbox app available in your region.
  • Controller model verified for that device, rather than assumed compatible because it uses Bluetooth.
  • Bluetooth or USB connection method available.
  • Eligible Game Pass plan or eligible free-to-play title confirmed.
  • 5 GHz Wi-Fi or wired networking available where possible.
  • Internet connection compared with Xbox’s 20 Mbps recommendation.
  • Button layout suitable for the person who will play.
  • Any accessibility switches, mounts or other accessories included in the plan.
