For most PCSX2 players, the best choice is a modern PC gamepad that works through SDL. PCSX2 lists SDL as its preferred input source and supports automatic mapping for SDL and XInput devices. If you already own an original PS2 controller, the MAYFLASH AD001 is a documented adapter option that presents the controller as a standard HID gamepad in its PC Gamepad mode. Neither option should be bought on an assumed latency or reliability advantage: the available documentation does not provide controlled comparisons.
The short answer: which option fits you?
Choose according to the hardware you have and the amount of setup you want to do. PCSX2’s own controller documentation is more useful here than a generic “best gamepad” ranking because input-source compatibility determines whether the emulator can map your buttons automatically.

| Option | Best for | Connection and PCSX2 path | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modern SDL-compatible PC gamepad | Most players buying a controller for PCSX2 | Use SDL in Settings > Controllers; automatic mapping is available for SDL devices | Compatibility depends on the individual controller and operating system |
| Windows XInput-compliant gamepad | Windows users whose device is not working through SDL | Try the XInput input source in PCSX2 | XInput is a fallback, not the preferred source in PCSX2’s guide |
| MAYFLASH AD001 | Players who already own an original PS2 controller | Set the adapter to PC Gamepad mode; it appears as a standard HID gamepad | The manufacturer does not claim PCSX2-specific testing, and pressure-sensitive PS2 input is not established |
| DirectInput device | Older or unusual Windows controllers that fail with SDL and XInput | Select DirectInput and map every control manually | PCSX2 describes it as the least reliable source and provides no automatic mapping |
PCSX2 describes SDL this way: “SDL is cross-platform and should work for most controllers and operating systems.” Read the current official PCSX2 Controllers guide for the input-source labels and operating-system notes used by your build.

- Input-source support: SDL is the preferred route. XInput is a documented Windows fallback. DirectInput is a last resort.
- Mapping effort: SDL and XInput can be automatically mapped; DirectInput requires manual mapping.
- What you already own: An original PS2 controller plus an adapter can avoid buying another gamepad, but it adds an adapter and a separate troubleshooting point.
- Connection preference: A modern pad may be wired or wireless. The AD001 wirelessly connects a PS2 controller to a PC, according to its manufacturer listing.
- Pressure-sensitive controls: Do not assume that a USB or wireless adapter carries the DualShock 2’s analog button pressure into PCSX2. The emulator’s documented support is narrower.
No source used for this guide supplies controlled latency tests, failure rates, or reliability rankings. Treat compatibility and mapping behavior—not an invented response-time score—as the basis for the choice.
How PCSX2’s input sources differ
SDL: the default starting point
SDL is PCSX2’s recommended input source because it is cross-platform and intended to cover most controllers and operating systems. When an SDL device is recognized, PCSX2 can generally apply an automatic mapping. That makes SDL the sensible first selection on Windows, Linux, and macOS.
Automatic mapping does not mean every button is guaranteed to be perfect. A device can expose an unusual layout, duplicate an axis, or identify itself differently from the mapping database. If that happens, keep SDL selected and correct the individual controls before abandoning it.
XInput: a Windows fallback
XInput is intended for XInput-compliant controllers on Windows. PCSX2 documents it as a fallback when a controller does not work properly through SDL. A contemporary Xbox Wireless Controller is therefore a sensible shopping search for a Windows player looking for a common XInput-oriented device, but the protocol guidance is not a guarantee for every hardware revision or connection method.
Select XInput only after checking SDL, or when the controller’s Windows documentation specifically identifies XInput support. XInput is not the universal solution for every third-party pad.
DirectInput: use only when necessary
DirectInput can expose older or unusual controllers that fail through SDL and XInput. PCSX2’s guide calls it generally the least reliable source and states that automatic mapping is unavailable. Expect to assign the left and right sticks, triggers, face buttons, shoulder buttons, D-pad, Start, Select, and any other controls yourself.

SDL Raw Input: a targeted workaround
Some third-party devices are misidentified by their normal SDL presentation. PCSX2 documents SDL Raw Input as a possible workaround for those cases. Raw Input trades convenience for control: mappings must be made manually, so use it when standard SDL sees the wrong device or produces unusable assignments rather than as a first choice.

Best default: a modern PC gamepad
Why it is the easiest recommendation
A modern PC gamepad avoids the extra hardware layer involved in converting a PS2 plug or wireless signal. With SDL selected, PCSX2 can often map the controller automatically; if a Windows controller does not cooperate with SDL, XInput gives you a documented second path. This is the lowest-effort route for someone who wants to install PCSX2 and start configuring games rather than preserve original hardware.
Look for a controller whose documentation identifies SDL compatibility directly, or one that is known to expose a standard PC gamepad interface. On Windows, an XInput-compliant model is useful as a fallback. Do not select a product solely because a retailer calls it “console compatible”; that description says nothing about which PC input API it exposes.
When a modern pad is the better value
- You do not already own a working PS2 controller.
- You play other PC games and want one controller that uses a conventional PC interface.
- You want automatic mapping instead of assigning every control by hand.
- You do not need to preserve the feel or shell of an original DualShock 2.
- You want to avoid adapter firmware, pairing, or mode-switching issues.
What this recommendation does not promise
SDL support is a compatibility guideline, not a certification that every revision of every controller will map identically. Wireless behavior can also vary with the controller, operating system, and receiver. Configure the pad in PCSX2 and verify every control before starting a long play session.
Best adapter path for an original PS2 controller: MAYFLASH AD001
What the manufacturer documents
The MAYFLASH AD001 product listing describes a wireless adapter for PS2 controllers and a PC Gamepad mode. In that mode, the controller is presented using standard HID axes, buttons, and POV input—the kind of gamepad interface a PC application can read.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat makes the AD001 a relevant candidate when you already have an original PS2 controller and want to reuse it on a computer. It does not establish that the adapter has been tested specifically with PCSX2, so treat it as a hardware option that still requires mapping and verification inside the emulator.

Who should consider it
- Owners of an original PS2 controller who prefer its shape, sticks, or button feel.
- Players who want to avoid purchasing another full-size gamepad.
- Users willing to check the adapter’s mode and map controls manually if automatic detection is imperfect.
Who should choose a modern PC pad instead
If you do not already own a PS2 controller, buying both a controller and an adapter adds cost and another possible failure point. A modern SDL-compatible pad is simpler to configure. The AD001’s value comes primarily from reusing hardware you already possess, not from a documented PCSX2 performance advantage.
Pressure-sensitive PS2 buttons: the critical limitation
Original PlayStation 2 controllers can report varying pressure on several face and shoulder buttons. That feature is often the reason readers look for an adapter rather than a modern PC gamepad. PCSX2’s official guide sets a strict boundary: “Pressure sensitivity is currently only available when using original DualShock 3 controllers.”
Accordingly, do not buy a generic DualShock 2 USB adapter expecting PCSX2 to receive the original pressure values. The AD001 documentation establishes standard HID axes, buttons, and POV input, but it does not establish DualShock 2 pressure support in PCSX2. The safe expectation is ordinary digital button presses unless you have verified a particular setup yourself.
For the documented pressure-sensitive path, PCSX2 describes original DualShock 3 controllers. On Windows, its instructions involve DsHidMini in SXS mode with SDL; Linux and macOS support are described through SDL. Follow the current PCSX2 controller documentation for the operating-system-specific procedure rather than applying assumptions from a PS2 adapter.
Set up a modern controller in PCSX2
- Connect the controller first. Pair the wireless pad or plug in its USB cable/receiver and confirm that the operating system sees it.
- Open the controller settings. In PCSX2, go to Settings > Controllers.
- Choose SDL. Select the SDL input source before trying alternatives. The controller should appear in the device list if SDL can read it.
- Apply automatic mapping when offered. Accept the generated layout, then inspect the result rather than assuming every control is correct.
- Test both sticks and every button. Check stick direction, trigger range, D-pad diagonals, shoulder buttons, Start, and Select. Correct any individual assignment in the same controller screen.
- Try XInput on Windows if SDL fails. Select the XInput source for an XInput-compliant controller and map it again. Do not switch to DirectInput merely because the first automatic map is imperfect.
- Save and test in a game. A menu test confirms recognition; a game confirms that analog movement, triggers, and the D-pad behave as expected under load.
Set up the MAYFLASH AD001 with a PS2 controller
- Connect the PS2 controller to the adapter according to the AD001’s hardware instructions.
- Select PC Gamepad mode. This is the mode the manufacturer describes as using standard HID axes, buttons, and POV input for a PC.
- Connect or pair the adapter with the computer. Wait for the operating system to finish detecting the gamepad before opening PCSX2.
- Open PCSX2’s controller page. Use Settings > Controllers and start with SDL.
- Map the controls. Try automatic mapping if PCSX2 offers it. If the layout is wrong or incomplete, assign each control manually, including both stick axes and the D-pad.
- Check the result with a test application. PCSX2 points to the PS2 Pad Test homebrew as a way to display the inputs being received. Use it to confirm that each button and axis reaches the emulated console.
- Record the working mode. If you later switch the adapter to another mode, PCSX2 may see a different device and require a new mapping.
The AD001 is documented as a possible adapter route, not as a PCSX2-certified accessory. If a control is missing, test the adapter’s PC Gamepad mode again, reconnect it, and verify the device under the operating system before changing emulator settings.
Fix incorrect or missing mappings
Only some buttons are wrong
Stay on the current input source and remap the affected controls manually. A single mislabeled face button does not mean the controller needs a different API. Check that the D-pad is assigned as a D-pad or POV input rather than as an analog stick, and that left/right stick axes are not reversed.

The controller is detected but appears as the wrong device
Try SDL Raw Input, which PCSX2 documents for some misidentified third-party devices. Raw Input requires manual mapping, so write down the intended layout and test every control after assigning it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The controller is not detected through SDL
On Windows, test XInput if the controller is XInput-compliant. If neither SDL nor XInput recognizes an older device, DirectInput may expose it, but expect a complete manual setup and less reliable behavior.
The sticks or triggers move incorrectly
Remove duplicate assignments, confirm that each axis has the correct positive and negative direction, and check whether a trigger is reported as a separate axis or as part of a combined axis. Re-run the mapping after changing the adapter mode or connection type.
Steam sends keyboard commands while you play
PCSX2’s guide warns that Steam Input can send unwanted desktop keyboard inputs. Its documented workarounds are to fully exit Steam, disable Steam’s controller support, or change Steam’s desktop and hotkey mappings. Apply one of those changes before diagnosing PCSX2 as the source of the extra keystrokes.
You need proof that the PS2 controller is sending input
Use the PS2 Pad Test homebrew recommended in PCSX2’s documentation. It separates an adapter or controller problem from a game-specific mapping problem by showing the signals that reach the emulated PS2.

Adapter paths that should not be treated as equivalent
Not every product described as a “PS2 adapter” solves the same problem. Brook’s Wingman PS2 FAQ discusses switching a controller connection to XInput when the Wingman PS2 is connected to a PC, but the documentation checked does not establish the use case of connecting an original PS2 controller to a PC through that device. Brook also advises checking its tested-controller compatibility list and notes that unlisted controllers may be incompatible or untested.

That is why the Wingman PS2 is not a recommendation in this guide. The AD001 has a manufacturer-described PC Gamepad mode for a PS2 controller; the Wingman documentation cited here does not establish the same PS2-to-PC path.
Buying checklist before you order
- Identify the operating system. SDL is cross-platform; XInput is the documented Windows fallback.
- Check the controller’s PC interface. Prefer explicit SDL compatibility, or XInput compliance if you are on Windows.
- Decide whether you are reusing a PS2 controller. If yes, verify that the adapter has a PC gamepad/HID mode rather than assuming console compatibility is enough.
- Set expectations for pressure sensitivity. PCSX2 documents it only for original DualShock 3 controllers, not generic DualShock 2 adapters.
- Allow time for mapping. SDL and XInput may map automatically; DirectInput and SDL Raw Input require manual work.
- Plan a verification step. Test every control in PCSX2 and, for an adapter setup, use the PS2 Pad Test homebrew if a signal is uncertain.
- Check for software conflicts. Steam Input can inject desktop keyboard commands unless it is exited, disabled, or remapped.
Final recommendation by reader type
Starting PCSX2 with no controller
Buy a modern PC gamepad with SDL support. On Windows, choose an XInput-compliant model if you want a documented fallback. Configure SDL first, apply automatic mapping, and verify the layout.
Already own an original PS2 controller
Consider the MAYFLASH AD001 in PC Gamepad mode. It is the adapter path in the available manufacturer documentation that explicitly describes presenting a PS2 controller as a standard HID gamepad for PC use. Map and test it in PCSX2, and do not assume pressure sensitivity will survive.
Need pressure-sensitive buttons specifically
Do not rely on a generic PS2 USB adapter. PCSX2’s documented pressure-sensitive support is for original DualShock 3 controllers, using its operating-system-specific SDL setup.
Using an old or unusual controller
Try SDL, then SDL Raw Input if the device is misidentified, and XInput on Windows when the controller supports it. Use DirectInput only when those routes fail, because you will need to map the controls manually and PCSX2 considers it the least reliable source.
Sources and version-sensitive details
Input-source behavior and pressure-sensitivity support can change as PCSX2 develops. The authoritative references for the current setup are the PCSX2 Controllers documentation, the MAYFLASH AD001 product page, and the relevant controller’s own manual. PCSX2’s 2.0 release information is available in its official release post, but the controller guide remains the specific reference for mapping and input-source configuration.
