Best controller settings for playing Ocarina of Time on Switch 2

Use Nintendo’s official Nintendo 64 Controller if you want Ocarina of Time to feel closest to the original. Its three-pronged shape and button placement match the game’s original ergonomics, including the classic grip with your left index finger on the rear Z button. If you prefer Joy-Con 2 or a Switch 2 Pro Controller, start with Nintendo’s displayed N64 mapping, then assign the three C-button actions to distinct, reachable inputs and test the result before a dungeon.

The best setup at a glance

Ocarina of Time is unusually sensitive to controller layout. You are moving with the left stick, steering the camera, locking on with Z, raising a shield, selecting items with the C buttons and entering ocarina notes. A layout that is comfortable for an ordinary 3D game can become awkward when you must reach three separate C actions quickly without losing camera or movement control.

Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller Players who prefer a conventional modern pad Not an N64 hand-position match Right-stick or face/shoulder assignments can work, depending on reach Confirm the game’s displayed Z and shield labels Depends on whether C actions can be reached without losing camera control In-game and system-level remapping are available Not stated Not stated in the available information
8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller Players seeking an N64-style third-party option Designed as an N64-style alternative, but not the official Nintendo controller Intended to provide a dedicated C-button arrangement Verify every label in the game Likely to suit players who prefer N64-style placement, but personal fit varies Confirm Switch 2 support and available remapping before buying Not stated TechRadar reported wireless testing on Switch 2 with Ocarina of Time; verify current US compatibility, stock, price and retailer terms

For most players, the official Nintendo 64 Controller is the simplest recommendation. The modern-controller alternatives are perfectly workable, but they reward careful assignment and a short practice session rather than an assumption that an unlabeled preset will feel right.

Why Ocarina of Time needs a careful layout

The three C buttons do more than select items

The C buttons are used frequently to select items and to play ocarina notes. On an original N64 pad, the three yellow C buttons sit together where the right thumb can select one without moving to a distant face button. A modern controller must reproduce that reach with three separate inputs. If two actions share an awkward direction or one requires the thumb to leave the camera stick, ordinary exploration can become a sequence of pauses and misinputs.

Camera, movement and Z targeting compete for attention

Movement stays on the left stick. Camera control and C actions are generally handled on the right side, while Z targeting and shield functions remain tied to the labels Nintendo displays for the original Z and the relevant shoulder control. Your goal is not merely to make every command available; it is to make the high-frequency commands reachable at the same time. Keep the thumb that controls movement available, and avoid placing all three C actions where camera control becomes difficult.

Ocarina notes expose a poor mapping quickly

Playing a song requires repeated, deliberate C inputs. A layout that feels acceptable while opening a chest may feel tiring or error-prone during a song. Test an ocarina sequence before committing to a long session. If a note requires an exaggerated thumb movement, move that C action to a nearer direction or button and retest.

Why the official Nintendo 64 Controller is the closest match

Nintendo describes its Nintendo 64 Controller as made for the Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics library and designed to look and operate like the original N64 controller. That matters in Ocarina of Time because the game was built around the original three-part hand position, not a conventional two-stick layout.

Use the classic hand position

  1. Place your left hand around the left and center grips so the left thumb rests on the analog stick.
  2. Keep your left index finger ready for the rear Z button, following the position described in the original manual.
  3. Use your right hand for the A button, the B button and the three C buttons.
  4. Use the C directions for item selection, camera-related actions and ocarina notes exactly as the game presents them.

This grip gives Z targeting and shield access without forcing your right thumb away from the C cluster. It is the most direct way to reproduce the original game’s intended reach. Players with smaller hands may still prefer a modern pad; comfort matters more than authenticity if the original shape causes strain.

When the N64 controller is not the right choice

Choose another controller if you dislike the three-pronged shape, need a conventional two-stick pad, play primarily in handheld mode or cannot comfortably reach the rear Z button. The game’s control screen is designed to let you adapt the mapping rather than forcing a single grip.

How to view and change controls in Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics

Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics exposes the original assignments and lets you customize controls for the game-and-controller combination. Use the in-game screen instead of guessing which modern button represents an original N64 input.

A practical modern-controller layout

There is no single best Joy-Con 2 or Switch 2 Pro Controller arrangement for every hand. Thumb length, whether you use the right stick for camera control and whether you prefer face or shoulder buttons all change the answer. Use these principles as a starting layout, then confirm every assignment in View/Change Controls.

Game function Placement goal Why it helps
Movement Keep it on the left stick Preserves the game’s normal directional control and leaves the right side free for C actions and camera work
C-left, C-down and C-right Use three distinct right-side directions or face/shoulder inputs that your right thumb can reach separately Prevents item and ocarina commands from colliding
C-up/Navi Reserve one immediately reachable input Lets you call Navi or use the C-up action without hunting through the layout
Z targeting Keep it on the input Nintendo identifies as the original Z function Maintains reliable lock-on access during combat and interaction
Shield Keep it on the relevant shoulder or trigger label shown by Nintendo Allows defensive input without sacrificing the movement stick
Ocarina notes Put the three note inputs on adjacent, clearly differentiated controls Reduces wrong notes and makes repeated songs less tiring

Right-stick assignments

Using three right-stick directions for the C actions can feel natural because the directions are visually distinct and the thumb already occupies that area. The trade-off is camera control: if the same stick is needed for camera movement, a C action can compete with that input. Try the arrangement in an open area and during an ocarina song. If the camera keeps moving when you intend to select an item, move one or more C actions to face or shoulder inputs.

Face-button assignments

Face buttons can make item selection and ocarina notes easy to identify by touch. They are a good choice when your right thumb can move between three buttons without losing the camera. Do not assume that the button nearest your thumb is automatically the best C-up/Navi input; use the function you call most often in the position that requires the least reach.

Shoulder-button assignments

Shoulders can free the right thumb for camera control, but they may be less comfortable for repeated ocarina notes. They are often better for a function you want immediately available, such as C-up/Navi or a defensive action, provided the game’s control screen identifies the assignment clearly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the layout before relying on it

Make your first test in a low-risk area, not immediately before a dungeon or a difficult boss. A five-minute check can reveal a bad assignment before it costs progress.

  1. Walk in several directions with the left stick and confirm that no remapped input interferes with movement.
  2. Use Z targeting on a nearby enemy or object, then release and reacquire the target.
  3. Raise the shield and confirm that the defensive control is reachable while moving.
  4. Use each C action individually. Check an item, a camera-related action and C-up/Navi.
  5. Play an ocarina song that uses multiple notes, watching for missed or duplicated inputs.
  6. Move the camera while selecting an item. If your thumb must leave the camera for too long, relocate a C action.
  7. Repeat the test after saving the mapping and after waking the console from sleep.

Keep the layout only when you can perform these checks without consciously searching for buttons. Muscle memory develops around the saved arrangement; frequent changes can be more disruptive than a slightly imperfect but consistent layout.

Joy-Con 2 and Switch 2 Pro Controller: what to expect

Joy-Con 2

Joy-Con 2 is practical when you play handheld or already have the controllers paired. Its modern button arrangement does not reproduce the N64 hand position, so the C actions need intentional placement. Use the in-game screen to identify each original N64 function, then choose inputs that your hands can reach without loosening the grip. Test both detached and attached play if you use both modes; a layout that feels comfortable with the controllers separated may not feel the same on the console.

Switch 2 Pro Controller

The Pro Controller offers the familiar modern-pad shape and is a strong choice for long sessions if you prefer two analog sticks. Start from Nintendo’s displayed mapping. Keep movement on the left stick, decide whether the right stick can serve both camera and C actions, and move any conflicting C action to a face or shoulder input. Confirm Z targeting and shield labels before saving because their physical location may differ from what you remember from another controller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

System-level button mapping versus the game’s mapping

Switch 2 also provides system-level button mapping for Joy-Con 2, Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, Joy-Con and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. These custom mappings are saved on the console, not on the controller, and can be reset from Quick Settings.

Use in-game mapping for Ocarina-specific decisions

The Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics View/Change Controls screen shows how original N64 buttons map to the current controller and lets you customize that game/controller combination. This is the clearest place to arrange C actions, ocarina notes, Z targeting and shield functions for Ocarina of Time.

Use system mapping for broader accessibility changes

System mapping is useful when you need a physical-button swap across games or when a controller’s standard reach does not work for your hands. Remember that the setting belongs to the Switch 2 console. A different player using the same console may encounter your remapped buttons, so reset or change the profile when appropriate.

Third-party N64-style hardware

An N64-shaped third-party controller can be appealing if the official controller is unavailable or you want a different shell, wireless behavior or price. TechRadar reported testing an 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller wirelessly on Switch 2 while playing Ocarina of Time. That report establishes practical use in that test, not permanent availability, a guaranteed regional feature set or a current retail price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check before buying

  • Confirm that the exact model supports Switch 2, not only the original Switch or another platform.
  • Check whether every original N64 input appears in Nintendo’s View/Change Controls screen.
  • Verify current US stock, price, warranty and return terms.
  • Test wireless pairing and button recognition before beginning a long save file.
  • Do not assume an N64-style shell has the same button feel or rear Z placement as Nintendo’s controller.

Troubleshooting common control problems

A C button performs the wrong action

Open Minus → View/Change Controls and inspect the displayed original mapping. If you changed the controls, confirm that the new assignment was saved. Then test the specific C action in a safe area. Avoid correcting the problem only with a system-level swap, because that can alter other games on the console.

The camera moves when you select an item

Your C action and camera input are competing for the same stick direction or nearby movement. Move that C action to a distinct face or shoulder input, or assign all three C actions to a clearly separated set of directions. Retest while moving the camera, not just while standing still.

Z targeting or shielding feels slow

Check which physical input Nintendo assigns to the original Z and shield functions. Keep targeting on an immediately reachable input, ideally one you can press while the left thumb remains on movement. If the button is physically uncomfortable, try a different controller or use the game’s remapping rather than relying on memory.

Ocarina notes are inconsistent

Play a multi-note song slowly and watch which input the game receives. If two notes are adjacent but difficult to distinguish by touch, separate them across clearer controls. A short practice test is safer than discovering the problem during a required song.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The remap changed another game

System-level mappings are stored on the Switch 2 console. Open Quick Settings and reset the custom mapping, then make Ocarina-specific changes in Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics. This keeps a global accessibility adjustment from being mistaken for the game’s own control configuration.

Choose by priority

Choose the official Nintendo 64 Controller when authenticity is first

Select it if you want the original hand placement, a dedicated C-button cluster and the rear Z position described in the original manual. It minimizes translation between the game’s design and your hands.

Choose Joy-Con 2 when portability is first

Use Joy-Con 2 when handheld play or existing hardware matters most. Spend time on C-button placement and verify the layout in both attached and detached use if you switch between them.

Choose the Switch 2 Pro Controller when modern comfort is first

Pick the Pro Controller if its conventional shape is more comfortable for long sessions. Keep movement on the left stick and resolve any right-stick conflict before you begin difficult sections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a third-party N64-style controller when availability or shape is decisive

Consider an N64-style alternative only after confirming Switch 2 compatibility, current US terms and the exact inputs Nintendo exposes. Treat reported wireless play as evidence that a particular test worked, not as a promise about every retailer, firmware version or region.

Recommended final setup

For the least troubleshooting, connect the official Nintendo 64 Controller, open the game’s control screen once and verify the original mapping. For a modern controller, keep movement on the left stick, give each C action its own reachable input, reserve an easy C-up/Navi control and leave Z targeting and shield on the labels Nintendo provides. Save the layout, test movement, combat, item use and an ocarina song in a safe area, and reset any console-wide mapping that interferes with other games.
