Best Controller Settings for Nintendo DS Emulation on Android

The best starting layout is a familiar Nintendo-style arrangement: map the gamepad D-pad to the DS D-pad, four face buttons to A, B, X and Y, shoulder buttons to L and R, and dedicated buttons to Start and Select. Keep a way to touch the lower screen, because a controller does not replace the stylus for touch-dependent games. After confirming that a game works, hide the virtual controls or lower their opacity if they cover the picture.

There is no universal “best” map. The available menus and features differ between melonDS-Android, DraStic and RetroArch’s melonDS DS core, and the most comfortable physical arrangement depends on your controller and the game. The procedures below give reliable starting points without treating any untested layout as objectively superior.

What a good DS controller layout needs to do

A Nintendo DS emulator has two different input jobs: traditional buttons and a touchscreen. A gamepad handles the first job well, but it cannot inherently reproduce a stylus tap, drag or handwriting gesture. Set up the physical controls first, then deliberately preserve touch access for the lower display.

DS input Recommended gamepad target Why this is a useful starting point
D-pad Physical D-pad Directional movement and menus feel familiar when the directions remain in their original cross layout.
A and B Two primary face buttons These are the most frequently used action and confirm/cancel inputs in many DS games.
X and Y The other two face buttons They remain available for games that use all four face buttons, without forcing a shoulder-button reach.
L and R Left and right shoulder buttons Shoulders are easy to reach while your thumb stays on the face buttons.
Start and Select Dedicated menu buttons Keeping them separate avoids sacrificing an action button and makes pausing predictable.
Touchscreen Android touch input or a virtual cursor Touch-heavy games require taps, drags or a cursor that a normal button map cannot supply.

The table is a conventional starting suggestion, not a layout tested across every controller, Android device or game. If a particular title uses an unusual command scheme, remap the least-used physical control rather than abandoning touch access.

Prepare Android and the controller before opening the emulator

Use a compatible connection

An Android-compatible Bluetooth controller or USB gamepad is optional; touchscreen controls work without one. The melonDS information material describes both USB and Bluetooth connections, but compatibility still depends on Android, the controller and the emulator build. Pair the controller in Android first, or connect it by USB with the appropriate adapter, then verify that Android shows it as connected before launching the emulator.

Check the basic inputs

  • Press each D-pad direction and face button in another Android game or a controller tester so you know the operating system is receiving input.
  • Confirm that the emulator is the application receiving the controller. If Android is displaying a pairing prompt or another app has focus, mappings may appear to be missing.
  • Keep the controller awake during setup. Some wireless pads disconnect when idle, which can make a completed map appear to have failed.

Decide how you will use the lower screen

Before hiding on-screen controls, identify whether the game uses the touchscreen for inventory, aiming, drawing, minigames or menu selections. For an occasional tap, leaving a small amount of soft input visible may be more convenient than switching modes. For a game that constantly uses touch, plan to use the display itself or a virtual cursor and choose a screen layout that leaves the lower screen easy to reach.

Set up melonDS-Android

The project documentation places controller and software-control options under Settings > Input. That documentation was last edited on November 14, 2021, so a newer build can use slightly different wording or placement. If an item is not in the exact location below, look for an Input or Controller section rather than assuming the feature was removed.

Map the physical controls

  1. Open the emulator’s Settings, then choose Input.
  2. Open Key mapping. Select the connected controller when the app presents more than one input device.
  3. Assign the physical D-pad to the four DS directions.
  4. Assign four comfortable face buttons to A, B, X and Y. Use the labels printed on the controller consistently; do not assume that every pad’s A button is in the same physical position.
  5. Assign the left and right shoulder buttons to L and R.
  6. Assign dedicated buttons to Start and Select. If your controller has no convenient pair, use two spare face or system buttons, but record the choice so you can reproduce it in another profile.
  7. Save the mapping, launch a game and test movement, one-button actions, a shoulder action, Start and Select. Testing in a real game catches reversed directions and buttons that the Android system reports under unexpected names.

Choose or edit a software input layout

melonDS-Android also exposes software input layouts. From the Input settings, choose an existing layout or create and edit one. A layout determines how virtual controls are arranged on the touchscreen; it is separate from the physical key map. Keep a software layout available even when you normally play with a controller, because it provides a fallback for touch-only commands.

Hide or reduce virtual controls

  • Show soft input: the documentation says this can be disabled when a controller is being used. Turn it off when the overlay blocks the game image and you do not need on-screen buttons.
  • Soft input opacity: reduce opacity instead of hiding the overlay if you still need occasional taps or want a visual reminder of touch controls.
  • Touch vibration: vibration and its strength are configurable. Lower the strength if the overlay’s feedback is distracting, or leave it enabled if it helps you confirm taps.

Do not hide soft input permanently before testing a touch-dependent title. A clean top screen is not useful if a lower-screen puzzle becomes inaccessible.

melonDS-Android troubleshooting

  • No buttons appear in Key mapping: return to Android’s Bluetooth or USB settings, reconnect the pad, then reopen the emulator. A controller that was connected after the mapping screen opened may not be listed until the screen is refreshed.
  • A direction is reversed: edit only that direction rather than rebuilding the entire map. Test up, down, left and right separately in-game.
  • The game responds twice: check whether both a physical map and a visible software button are being activated. Temporarily hide soft input to determine whether the duplicate action comes from the overlay.
  • You cannot use the touchscreen after hiding controls: turn Show soft input back on or restore a less opaque layout. The physical controller does not create stylus input by itself.

Set up DraStic

DraStic’s documented path is Options > External Controller. Its settings guide says the mapping dialog can assign buttons and the D-pad, and that up to three mappings can be saved. That makes separate profiles practical when one controller is shared or when a game’s unusual controls justify a second arrangement.

  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

Create a primary mapping

  1. Open the emulator’s Options menu and select External Controller.
  2. Choose a mapping slot and open the mapping dialog.
  3. Press the physical D-pad directions when prompted for the DS directions.
  4. Map the four face buttons to A, B, X and Y, then map the shoulders to L and R.
  5. Assign Start and Select to dedicated buttons if available.
  6. Save the mapping, start a game and verify every assignment. Test both screens, because a control that works in the emulator menu can still be unsuitable for a game’s touch interaction.

Use the three saved mappings strategically

  • Keep one general-purpose map with the conventional DS arrangement.
  • Use a second slot for a controller whose face-button labels or orientation feel different.
  • Reserve the third for a title that relies heavily on touch or uses Start, Select, X and Y in an unusual way.

The three-slot capability is a documented feature, but the available documentation does not establish how every current build labels or exports those slots. If your version offers different names, save a note describing which game each slot serves.

Understand the MOGA exception

DraStic’s FAQ says MOGA controllers were automatically assigned from version 2.2.0.0a and identifies a mapping view at Options > External Controller > Show MOGA Button Mapping. This is a version- and controller-family-specific note, not a promise that every Bluetooth pad will map automatically. For other controllers, use the normal external-controller mapping dialog.

The same FAQ uses a Pokémon menu as an example: Start has no default in-game action in that menu and X opens the menu. Treat that as the behavior documented for that game and context, not as a universal rule for all DS software or a replacement for testing your own map.

DraStic troubleshooting

  • The automatic MOGA map is absent: confirm that the controller is actually a supported MOGA device and that the installed version matches the FAQ’s version-specific wording. Otherwise, map it manually.
  • One saved profile works but another does not: load the intended slot explicitly before launching the game and check that each slot was saved after the final button assignment.
  • Start or Select does nothing: test in the emulator’s own menus and in a game that uses those commands. Some games do not assign an action to every DS button in every screen.

Configure RetroArch’s melonDS DS core

RetroArch uses a different control system from the standalone Android apps. In the core’s controller settings, keep the user device type set to Nintendo DS – Joypad, as specified by the Libretro documentation. Do not look for these names in melonDS-Android’s Settings screen; they belong to RetroArch’s frontend and the melonDS DS core.

Map standard DS controls

  1. Open RetroArch’s controls menu while the melonDS DS core is loaded.
  2. Select the port or player using the controller, then choose the Nintendo DS – Joypad device type.
  3. Map the D-pad, A, B, X, Y, L, R, Start and Select using the same conventional arrangement described earlier.
  4. Save the core or game remap after testing. If only one title needs a special arrangement, keep the change per-game rather than changing every DS game.

Assign the DS-specific functions

The Libretro mapping table includes more than ordinary buttons. Depending on the game and your controller, assign spare controls or menu shortcuts for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Core function What it is for Practical assignment advice
Microphone Games that expect a microphone input or a microphone command. Use a spare button only if a game requires it; otherwise leave the control available for screen or cursor functions.
Next Screen Layout Cycles the arrangement of the two DS screens. Give it an easy-to-remember spare button if you switch layouts often.
Move Virtual Cursor Moves the pointer used for virtual touch interaction. Map it to an analog stick or another control that can provide directional movement.
Touch Virtual Cursor Activates the virtual cursor as a touch action. Pair it with the cursor movement control so tapping does not require a separate touchscreen gesture.
Close Lid Simulates closing the Nintendo DS lid. Leave it unassigned unless a game or test scenario needs that behavior.

Use screen-layout overrides

Next Screen Layout can cycle through the core’s available arrangements. RetroArch’s documentation recommends per-game core-option overrides where appropriate, so a title that needs a large lower screen does not force the same layout on every game. Save the override after you find a readable arrangement, then test both touch and physical input in that layout.

Keep touchscreen access usable

Touch-only games and hybrid games

Some DS titles use touch for nearly every command; others use it only for an occasional menu, map or minigame. For a touch-heavy title, leave the Android display unobstructed enough to tap and drag, or use RetroArch’s virtual cursor and touch controls. For a button-heavy title, hiding or dimming the soft overlay can make the top screen easier to see while retaining a way to bring touch input back when needed.

Choose a practical two-screen arrangement

  • Use a layout that keeps both screens large enough to read when the game alternates between them.
  • Prefer a larger lower screen for games whose primary action occurs through touch.
  • Assign Next Screen Layout in RetroArch if you need to switch arrangements during play.
  • In melonDS-Android and DraStic, use their available software-input or display options and verify the labels in your installed build, since the cited melonDS documentation is from 2021 and menu names can change.

Do not confuse opacity with input removal

Lowering soft-input opacity changes how much of the overlay you see; it does not necessarily remove its touch targets. Hiding the overlay removes visual clutter but can also remove an obvious way to invoke virtual controls. Choose the least intrusive option that still lets you complete the game’s touch actions.

Recommended layouts by game type

Button-heavy action games

Use the conventional D-pad, A/B/X/Y and L/R map. Put Start and Select on dedicated center buttons, hide the soft overlay after testing, and keep the touchscreen available for rare menus or item screens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Role-playing games and menu-driven titles

The standard map works well for movement and confirmation, but make sure Select is easy to reach if the game uses it for a map or shortcut. Leave touch input enabled until you have checked inventory, map and dialogue screens.

Touch-focused puzzles, drawing and minigames

Prioritize the lower screen over a perfectly clean overlay. Keep soft input visible at a usable opacity in melonDS-Android, or configure RetroArch’s virtual cursor and Touch Virtual Cursor. A physical controller can still handle movement and buttons, but it should not be treated as a complete stylus replacement.

Games with unusual button behavior

Start with the conventional map, then change only the commands that the game actually uses differently. The Pokémon menu behavior documented by DraStic’s FAQ illustrates why: a button’s effect can depend on the current game screen, so a map that looks correct in an emulator menu may not match a particular in-game context.

How to compare emulator setups without declaring a false winner

Documentation describes available features, but it does not provide controlled tests across controllers, phones, Android releases, games or emulator versions. Compare your setup on the following concrete axes instead of calling one arrangement universally best.

Use the emulator that gives you the mapping workflow, touch method and screen arrangement you can operate comfortably. A feature documented for one entry in the table should not be assumed to exist under the same name in another.

Fix the most common controller problems

The emulator does not detect the pad

  1. Disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth or USB, then confirm Android still lists the controller.
  2. Close and reopen the emulator so it refreshes available input devices.
  3. Open the emulator’s mapping screen and select the correct controller if multiple devices are listed.
  4. If the pad works in Android but not in the emulator, test a different connection method and check the emulator build’s input settings.

The wrong button is assigned

Delete or overwrite that individual assignment, press the intended physical button only once, save, and test in a game. Some controllers expose labels that do not match their printed legends; rely on the physical position and in-game result rather than the name alone.

The D-pad or analog control behaves unpredictably

Map the actual D-pad directions first. If you prefer an analog stick, assign each direction deliberately and test diagonals and menu navigation. Do not assume that an analog axis automatically becomes a four-way DS D-pad in every emulator.

Touch commands are impossible after setup

Restore melonDS-Android’s Show soft input, increase its opacity, or use the touchscreen directly. In RetroArch, check that Move Virtual Cursor and Touch Virtual Cursor are mapped and that the selected screen layout leaves the lower display accessible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A layout change affects every game

In RetroArch, save a per-game core-option override when only one title needs a different screen arrangement. In DraStic, use a separate saved mapping when a title needs different buttons. In melonDS-Android, keep a general software layout and edit a copy for touch-heavy games if the installed version supports that workflow.

A concise setup checklist

  • Connect and verify the Android-compatible Bluetooth or USB controller.
  • Map D-pad, A, B, X, Y, L, R, Start and Select.
  • Launch an actual game and test every mapped input, not just the emulator menu.
  • Keep direct touchscreen access for taps, drags, drawing and stylus-dependent commands.
  • Hide soft input only after confirming that the game does not need its virtual buttons.
  • Use opacity reduction when you want occasional touch access without a fully opaque overlay.
  • Save a separate mapping or per-game override for unusual titles.
  • Recheck menu labels against your installed version, especially when following melonDS-Android documentation last edited November 14, 2021.

What “best” means for your Android DS setup

The dependable answer is a conventional physical map plus deliberately retained touch input. melonDS-Android offers key mapping, editable software layouts, soft-input visibility, opacity and vibration controls; DraStic offers external-controller mapping with up to three saved mappings and a version-specific MOGA shortcut; RetroArch’s melonDS DS core adds a Nintendo DS – Joypad device type, virtual-cursor functions, microphone, lid and screen-layout controls. Choose among them by the controls and screen workflow you can actually use, then validate the result in the game rather than relying on a supposedly universal arrangement.
