Start with an Xbox-compatible XInput controller. It is the safest common denominator for the documented Windows Steam ports, especially when a game uses fixed cameras. Choose Original or tank controls when you want the classic, camera-independent feel; choose Alternate or analog movement when directional movement feels confusing. Keyboard play is perfectly workable when a port exposes complete remapping, but there is no universal key layout. Set up one clean baseline, tune sensitivity in small steps, and verify the individual game’s manual because older ports use different defaults and controller layers.
Which input should you use?
For most classic survival-horror games on Steam, an XInput controller is the least troublesome starting point. Capcom’s Resident Evil HD Remaster FAQ explicitly lists full mouse-and-keyboard support and XInput devices such as Xbox 360 and Xbox One gamepads. The Resident Evil Steam listing likewise recommends a genuine Xbox 360 PC-compatible controller or a comparable XInput gamepad. That does not make a controller mandatory; it means the game’s documented compatibility target is clear.

A controller also puts movement, turning, aiming and action inputs on controls that were designed around console-era layouts. If you prefer a keyboard, or if your desk setup makes a controller uncomfortable, use it when the port lets you remap every important action and provides a usable way to turn or aim. A fixed-camera game can feel natural on a keyboard once forward, back, turn, run and interact keys are placed close together.

Tank, alternate and analog movement explained
Original or tank controls
In a tank scheme, forward and back are tied to the character, while left and right turn the character in place or steer relative to the character’s facing. The camera can change to a new fixed angle without changing what “forward” means. This is why the scheme remains useful in rooms where a camera cut would otherwise make the controls appear to reverse.
Tank controls reward deliberate inputs. Tap the turn direction, let the character align, then press forward. Holding several directions at once can produce a turn or stop that feels slower than modern analog movement, but that friction is part of the original design. A left stick or D-pad both work; use whichever lets you make short, repeatable presses.
Alternate or analog movement
Alternate movement maps the stick direction to movement through the current view: pushing up generally moves the character toward the top of the screen, while left and right move sideways. Capcom describes the Resident Evil HD Remaster’s Alternate scheme as allowing fluid movement in any direction. It reduces the need to mentally translate a character’s facing after every camera cut.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use Alternate when tank controls cause missed doorways, accidental turns or repeated reorientation. The trade-off is that a camera change can alter the relationship between stick direction and the room, so a direction that was safe before a cut may require a new correction afterward.
How to decide in the first five minutes
- Enter a safe area with enough room to walk in a straight line.
- Test forward, back, left and right without touching the camera or aiming controls.
- Walk through a doorway or trigger a camera change, then repeat the same inputs.
- If the character keeps moving in the intended character-facing direction, Original/tank is behaving as expected.
- If you want the character to follow the stick’s screen direction instead, switch to Alternate or analog movement and repeat the test.
Keep the scheme that lets you make the fewest corrective inputs. “Classic” does not have to mean “most difficult”; the right choice is the one that makes exploration predictable for you.
Recommended settings matrix
| Situation | Controller setting | Keyboard setting | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preserve the original fixed-camera feel | Original/tank controls; use the left stick or D-pad deliberately | Keep forward, back and turn keys distinct and close to the action key | Character-facing movement stays consistent through camera cuts |
| Reduce directional confusion | Alternate or analog movement, if the game offers it | Remap movement and action to comfortable adjacent keys | Fewer mental translations between camera direction and character direction |
| Aim or turn feels sluggish | Raise stick sensitivity in small steps; Dead Space exposes separate stick and trigger sliders | Adjust only the look or aim bindings the game provides | Small changes are easier to evaluate than a maximum-sensitivity jump |
| Controller is not detected | Prefer XInput; check Steam Input only when the game or pad needs it | Confirm keyboard focus, then rebind from the game’s options menu | Prevents an extra translation layer from hiding the real problem |
| You need to restore a known baseline | Load the game’s default preset | Use RESET/defaults, then change one binding at a time | Creates a reference point for troubleshooting |
Set up an XInput controller before launching the game
1. Connect the controller directly
Use an Xbox-compatible XInput controller rather than beginning with a generic mode or an emulator. Connect it before launching the game so the port can enumerate it during startup. If you are using a wireless connection, make sure the operating system reports the controller as connected before opening Steam.
2. Check whether Steam Input is necessary
Steam Input can translate a controller into another input format, but adding that layer is not automatically better. Start with the game’s native XInput path. Enable or change Steam Input only when the game does not see the controller, the controller is not presenting itself as XInput, or the title’s documented support requires the configurator.

Resident Evil 2’s FAQ notes that keyboard/mouse and XInput devices are supported, while DualShock 4 use can require Steam Controller Configurator support. That is a title-specific exception, not a reason to enable a translation layer for every game.
3. Confirm the game sees the device
Open the game’s control options and look for a controller prompt, a gamepad icon or a binding screen that accepts stick movement. Press a face button and move each stick once. If the menu remains on keyboard prompts, quit and reconnect before trying a different software layer; otherwise you can end up diagnosing a configuration that never reached the game.
4. Select the movement scheme before remapping
Choose Original, Alternate or the game’s equivalent first. A remap made under one movement model may feel wrong after you change the model, especially if the port separates movement, turning and camera controls.
Build a reliable controller profile
Movement and turning
For Original/tank controls, assign movement to the left stick and reserve the D-pad for menus or inventory if the game allows it. The D-pad is useful when you need a single, unambiguous directional press, while the stick gives you a little more comfort during long exploration sections. Do not bind the same direction to two different physical controls until the basic profile works; duplicate bindings make accidental inputs harder to trace.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor Alternate or analog movement, keep the left stick dedicated to movement and avoid adding a second movement source unless the game specifically supports it. If the game provides a separate look or aim stick, leave it independent so camera-relative movement does not become mixed with aiming.
Actions, run and inventory
Place the primary action on a face button that is easy to reach without releasing movement. Put run on a neighboring button or a shoulder control if the game permits it. Inventory and map actions can be placed on less frequently used buttons, but keep them distinct from confirm and cancel so menu navigation does not trigger an in-world action when you return to play.
Restore defaults before diagnosing a problem
If a character will not move, an action fires twice or the menu appears to ignore a button, load the game’s default preset first. Change only one binding, test it, and then make the next change. This isolates a bad assignment from a detection problem.

Game-specific guidance from the documented PC controls
Resident Evil HD Remaster
Capcom documents both full mouse-and-keyboard control and XInput-based devices. It also documents two movement schemes: Original, which follows traditional tank controls, and Alternate, which permits fluid movement in any direction.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Use Original when you are replaying the game for its fixed-camera pacing or when you want forward and back to remain tied to the character. Use Alternate when camera-relative movement is easier for you to read. Test the choice in a safe room and change it before you begin a long exploration segment; the two schemes alter how every doorway and camera cut is approached.
Resident Evil 2
Capcom’s FAQ lists keyboard/mouse and XInput support. It also notes that DualShock 4 use can require Steam Controller Configurator support. If the game recognizes an XInput pad immediately, keep the setup native. If you use a different controller standard, verify whether Steam’s configurator is the compatibility layer the FAQ expects before changing in-game bindings.
Silent Hill 2
The PC manual lists both keyboard and gamepad bindings and includes a RESET option for returning to defaults. It specifically recommends changing Walk/Run Control to Analog when an analog stick is available. Follow that recommendation when your controller has a usable stick, then test walking and running separately; the option affects how those movement states are controlled, not merely which physical button starts a run.
For keyboard play, use the manual’s listed bindings as a starting point, then move the most frequent actions to keys that sit near movement. If experimentation leaves you unsure which assignment changed, use RESET and rebuild the profile one input at a time.
Dead Space
Electronic Arts documents Default, DS1, DS2 and Custom control presets. The same page exposes separate stick-sensitivity and trigger-sensitivity sliders, each running from 0 to 100, with a documented default sensitivity of 0.
Start with the preset that matches the control style you recognize, then switch to Custom only when you have a specific reason to change an input. Raise stick sensitivity in small increments if turning feels sluggish. Adjust trigger sensitivity independently when trigger activation feels too early or too late. Because the sliders are separate, changing one should not be used as a substitute for changing the other.

Keyboard and mouse settings that remain playable
Use complete remapping as the requirement
Keyboard play works best when the port lets you change movement, turn, run, interact, aim, attack, inventory and menu confirmation independently. A fixed layout can be playable, but if a critical action is locked to an uncomfortable key, no amount of mouse sensitivity tuning will solve the ergonomic problem.
A practical key arrangement
Keep forward, back, left and right together, with the main action and run keys within one hand’s reach. Put inventory and map functions on nearby keys that you can identify without looking away from the screen. Reserve a separate key for cancel or back. The exact letters are less important than consistency: every high-frequency action should be reachable without crossing over the movement cluster.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep turning distinct in tank-control games
Do not collapse forward and turning into one ambiguous command when the game expects tank controls. Give forward, back, turn-left and turn-right their own keys if the port exposes them. This makes short corrective turns possible and prevents a held movement key from producing an unexpected rotation.
Mouse use is game-dependent
Some ports offer full mouse-and-keyboard control, while others expose only limited mouse functions. Use the mouse for look or aim only when the game provides a corresponding binding. If the game does not expose a mouse action, leave the mouse out of the profile rather than forcing an operating-system remap that the game cannot interpret.
How to tune sensitivity without losing control
Change one variable at a time
Begin at the documented default, move the sensitivity a small amount, and test the same turn or aim task again. Large jumps make it impossible to tell whether an improvement came from the stick, the trigger or a different movement scheme.
Use repeatable tests
- Turn through one doorway and stop on a visible edge.
- Rotate to a fixed object, release the stick, and check whether the character stops cleanly.
- Walk a short straight path, then repeat it after a camera change.
- For trigger-sensitive actions, press slowly once and quickly once to compare activation points.
Dead Space is the clearest documented example of separate tuning: its stick and trigger controls each use a 0–100 range, with 0 listed as the default. Treat those values as game-specific controls, not a universal recommendation for every horror title.

Fix the most common control problems
The game does not detect the controller
- Close the game.
- Reconnect the controller and confirm the operating system sees it.
- Prefer an XInput mode or an Xbox-compatible XInput controller.
- Launch the game again and test the options menu.
- Use Steam Input only if the controller or the game’s documented support calls for it.
If the game detects keyboard input but not the controller, use the keyboard temporarily to reach the control menu and confirm whether a gamepad is listed. Do not remap every key until detection is solved.

The controller works in menus but not in play
Load the game’s default preset, select the intended movement scheme, and test the left stick in a safe area. A menu can accept a generic button while the gameplay profile still has no movement binding. Reassign movement first, then actions, testing after each change.
Directions feel reversed after a camera cut
This is usually a control-model mismatch rather than a faulty controller. If you selected Alternate or analog movement, remember that stick direction follows the current view; a camera change can therefore change the screen direction you need. If you want forward to remain tied to the character, switch to Original/tank controls.
Turning or aiming feels too slow
Increase the relevant stick sensitivity in small steps. In Dead Space, use the stick slider rather than the trigger slider for a turning problem. On keyboard, adjust only the look or aim option the game exposes; a faster key-repeat setting outside the game can make menus and movement behave unpredictably.
A new binding causes several actions at once
Reset to defaults and rebuild one binding at a time. Check for duplicate assignments, especially when a controller profile and Steam Input are both active. Keep a short note of each change so you can return to the last known-good profile.
Accessibility and comfort choices
Classic controls are not a test of authenticity. Use the scheme that reduces fatigue and accidental inputs. Analog movement can help players who find repeated directional taps uncomfortable; tank controls can help players who need a stable forward direction through camera cuts. A keyboard profile with nearby movement and action keys can be easier to operate than a controller for players who prefer firm, discrete presses.
Make changes during a safe section rather than during combat. Keep one default profile untouched and save a second custom profile when the game supports it. If the title offers only RESET and manual rebinding, take a screenshot or write down the working assignments before experimenting.
A quick decision framework
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Then adjust… |
|---|---|---|
| Authentic fixed-camera behavior | XInput controller with Original/tank controls | Use short stick or D-pad inputs; keep turning separate |
| Less camera-relative confusion | XInput controller with Alternate/analog movement | Practice after camera cuts and lower sensitivity if corrections overshoot |
| Precise, discrete inputs | Keyboard with complete remapping | Place movement, action and run in one compact cluster |
| Fast turning or aiming | Controller profile with adjustable sensitivity | Raise stick sensitivity gradually; leave trigger sensitivity independent |
| A non-XInput controller | Native game support first, then Steam Input if required | Check the title’s manual or FAQ before creating a custom layer |
Pre-session checklist
- Connect the controller before launching the game.
- Confirm the game sees XInput or the documented compatibility layer.
- Select Original/tank or Alternate/analog movement intentionally.
- Load defaults before making a custom profile.
- Bind movement, action, run, inventory and cancel separately.
- Test a camera change in a safe area.
- Adjust one sensitivity control at a time.
- Keep a written or saved copy of a working profile.
- Consult the individual game’s manual when labels or defaults differ.
The dependable formula is simple: begin with XInput, choose the movement model that matches how you read a fixed camera, remap only what you can test, and tune sensitivity gradually. That approach preserves the deliberate tension of classic survival horror without forcing every game or player into one control scheme.
