As of October 13, 2026, the most defensible starting point is SCUF’s beta-era controller baseline, not a guaranteed final preset: Tactical layout, 1.65 sensitivity, Dynamic response, Instant ADS, aim assist enabled, low deadzones, and vibration off. Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to launch on October 23, 2026, so every value below must be checked against the live menu and later patches.
No reliable official audio recipe has been published in the material available before launch. Use the game’s current audio menu and your actual headphones or speakers, then tune for clear game sound and voice chat rather than copying invented “footstep” numbers.

What this guide can—and cannot—promise before launch
Modern Warfare 4 is listed for release on October 23, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2. Activision describes multiplayer as precision-focused combat with fluid movement, physical weapon handling, improved visibility, and refined audio design. Those descriptions explain the design goals; they do not establish a canonical controller or audio preset.

The game is expected to include 12 new 6v6 maps at launch, making a comfortable setup useful across close-quarters, open sightline, and movement-heavy environments. However, no setting is universally optimal. Controller wear, hand comfort, aim habits, display latency, and preferred movement style all affect the result.
Provisional controller baseline
Enter these values as a starting point if the live game uses the same labels. Change one item at a time in a private match or training space, record what you changed, and keep a setting only if it improves repeatable control.
| Setting | SCUF beta/pre-launch starting point | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Button layout | Tactical | Moves crouch or prone access to a stick-click arrangement on supported layouts, helping movement without removing a thumb from the right stick. |
| Stick layout | Default | Keeps the game’s standard movement and look-stick positions. |
| Horizontal sensitivity | 1.65 | Controls left-right camera speed. |
| Vertical sensitivity | 1.65 | Controls up-down camera speed. |
| ADS sensitivity multiplier | 0.95–1.00 | Scales look speed while aiming down sights. |
| Aim response curve | Dynamic | Changes how stick movement is translated into camera acceleration across small and large inputs. |
| ADS transition timing | Instant | Applies the ADS sensitivity behavior immediately when aiming, if the live menu retains this option. |
| Target aim assist | On | Enables the game’s target-assist behavior, subject to the final build and mode rules. |
| ADS aim assist | On | Enables aim assistance while aiming down sights. |
| Motion sensor | Off | Prevents controller-motion input from altering aim. |
| Left-stick minimum deadzone | 3 | Sets the smallest movement that the game will recognize from the left stick. |
| Left-stick maximum deadzone | 65 | Sets the input point at which left-stick travel reaches maximum movement. |
| Right-stick minimum deadzone | 3 | Sets the smallest right-stick movement recognized for aiming. |
| Right-stick maximum deadzone | 99 | Sets the upper response boundary for right-stick travel. |
| Trigger deadzones | 0–5 | Reduces the amount of trigger travel required for input, depending on the final control behavior. |
| Vibration | Off | Removes haptic feedback that can distract from fine aim; this is a preference, not a rule. |
| Sprint assist | Tactical Sprint Assist; delay 1; single-tap sprint activation | Automates or shortens the input needed to enter tactical sprint, if those options exist in the launch menu. |
SCUF’s figures are recommendations for the beta/pre-launch version. They are not population statistics, laboratory measurements, or values confirmed by the game’s developer. Verify every label and number in the live build before relying on it.

How to apply the setup safely
- Open the controller settings. From the main menu, enter the game’s Settings area and select the controller or input section. The exact navigation labels may differ by platform and launch update.
- Set the physical layout first. Choose Tactical and leave Stick Layout on Default. Play a few minutes without changing sensitivity so you can learn the button positions.
- Set aim behavior. Enter 1.65 for both horizontal and vertical sensitivity, choose Dynamic, set ADS sensitivity between 0.95 and 1.00, and choose Instant ADS transition if available.
- Enable assistance options. Turn Target Aim Assist and ADS Aim Assist on. Leave Motion Sensor off unless you deliberately want motion aiming.
- Enter deadzones. Start with 3 minimum and the SCUF maximum values of 65 for the left stick and 99 for the right stick. Use the lowest drift-free minimum, as explained below, rather than assuming 3 will suit every controller.
- Configure triggers and feedback. Start with trigger deadzones in the 0–5 range and vibration off. If the game offers separate haptic or trigger-effect controls, treat them as independent options and test them rather than assuming one switch controls all feedback.
- Configure sprint assistance. Choose Tactical Sprint Assist, delay 1, and single-tap sprint activation if those labels are present. Check that the behavior does not cause unwanted sprinting when you need a quiet, precise movement.
- Test in a controlled space. Fire at stationary and moving targets, make a 180-degree turn, track a target while ADS, and strafe around cover. Change only one variable after each test.
Choosing sensitivity without chasing a magic number
Start with equal horizontal and vertical values
The 1.65/1.65 starting point gives symmetrical camera behavior. Equal values make it easier to diagnose whether a problem comes from overall speed or from a particular axis. If horizontal turns feel slow but vertical corrections feel stable, raise horizontal only by a small increment. If recoil control feels too fast, lower vertical only.
Use a repeatable turning test
Stand beside a fixed visual reference, push the right stick for the same duration, and observe how far the camera rotates. Repeat the test at hip fire and ADS. A useful sensitivity lets you turn onto a nearby target without overshooting while still allowing a rapid turn when an opponent appears behind you. Do not judge it from one lucky kill.

Adjust ADS separately
The 0.95–1.00 ADS multiplier is intentionally close to your normal look speed. Choose 0.95 if small corrections feel twitchy, and move toward 1.00 if tracking feels sluggish. Keep the value stable for several matches before changing it; frequent changes prevent your muscle memory from settling.
When higher sensitivity makes sense
- You regularly lose close-range fights because you cannot rotate onto a target quickly enough.
- You use movement techniques that require fast camera turns and can stop the reticle accurately.
- Your display and controller feel responsive enough that increased speed does not become unpredictable.
When lower sensitivity makes sense
- You overshoot targets during small corrections.
- Your reticle shakes while tracking at medium or long range.
- You play primarily with precise, deliberate aim and do not need rapid 180-degree turns.
These are tuning decisions, not tested head-to-head findings. The SCUF number is simply the documented pre-launch baseline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDeadzone tuning and stick-drift diagnosis
What the minimum deadzone does
A minimum deadzone ignores tiny stick movements. A low value gives faster response but exposes drift from worn or imperfect hardware. A high value hides drift but creates a noticeable delay before movement begins. Start at 3, then watch the reticle and character while you leave both sticks untouched.
Raise the minimum only as needed
- Load a quiet practice area and release the sticks.
- Observe whether the camera moves or the character walks without input.
- Increase that stick’s minimum deadzone by one step.
- Repeat until unwanted movement stops, then test the smallest deliberate adjustment you can make.
Use separate values for left and right sticks if only one is drifting. Do not raise both to a large number to compensate for a single faulty stick.
Understanding maximum deadzones
The maximum value determines how soon full input is reached. SCUF’s 65 left-stick and 99 right-stick recommendations are starting points for the beta menu, not universal hardware requirements. If the right stick reaches maximum turn speed before you expect it, inspect the live menu’s response behavior and adjust cautiously. If full movement requires pushing the stick almost to its physical edge, a lower maximum may feel more immediate, provided the game allows it.

Button layout, sprint assistance, and motion controls
Tactical layout
Tactical is intended for players who want crouch or prone access without taking the aiming thumb off the right stick. It can make sliding, crouching, and strafing easier during a gunfight, but it also changes muscle memory. Spend time in a safe area learning the new press and hold behavior before entering ranked or high-stakes matches.
Tactical Sprint Assist
The documented baseline uses Tactical Sprint Assist with delay 1 and single-tap activation. This can reduce repeated stick clicks, but automated sprinting may expose you when you want to move quietly or make a fine adjustment around cover. If you find yourself sprinting past doorways or losing control immediately after spawning, disable or lengthen the assist rather than changing aim sensitivity to solve a movement problem.
Motion sensor off
Motion aiming is a separate control method. Leave it off while learning the baseline so motion input cannot mask a stick-sensitivity problem. Turn it on only if you intentionally want to practice motion corrections and your platform’s controller supports the feature.
Aim assist and response curve choices
Aim assist on
The baseline enables both Target Aim Assist and ADS Aim Assist. These options can change how the reticle behaves near targets, so evaluate them in the actual mode you play. Assistance does not replace positioning, recoil control, or target identification, and its behavior can be modified by game updates.
Dynamic response curve
A response curve controls how far the camera moves for a given stick displacement. Dynamic is SCUF’s documented starting point. If the reticle feels too sensitive around the center, test another curve only after recording your baseline performance. If you switch curves and sensitivity at the same time, you will not know which change helped.

Vibration and PlayStation trigger effects
SCUF recommends vibration off to reduce feedback during aiming. That is a preference for a quieter, less distracting controller, not an official rule or proof of a competitive advantage.
The PlayStation listing confirms support for DualSense vibration and adaptive trigger effects. On PlayStation 5, you may therefore see additional feedback controls beyond a simple vibration switch. Try the baseline with vibration and trigger effects disabled, then enable one feature at a time if you value immersion or physical cues more than an unobstructed aiming feel. A new controller is not required to follow this guide.
Audio settings: what is actually established
Activision’s August 21, 2026 multiplayer overview describes refined audio design as part of its combat-fidelity system, alongside trajectory, weapon motion, stance, camera behavior, field of view, and target visibility. It does not publish a Modern Warfare 4 audio preset, named mix, dynamic-range option, master-volume value, music level, effects level, or voice-chat recommendation.
Because those values are not established, do not copy a fabricated recipe or assume a particular mix guarantees earlier footstep detection. Audio perception depends on the final mix, your output device, room noise, hearing, volume limits, and platform processing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Practical audio setup when the live menu is available
- Open the current Audio menu. Record the exact labels shown by your platform and build. Do not substitute settings from another Call of Duty title.
- Choose the output type that matches your device. If the game offers speaker, headphones, or similar output modes, select the one you are actually using. An incorrect mode can make the tonal balance or spatial cues feel unnatural.
- Set a safe, intelligible master level. Raise volume only until dialogue, weapon reports, and movement sounds are clear. Excessive volume can cause fatigue and does not guarantee more detail.
- Separate competing sources where the menu allows it. Lower music or menu sounds if they mask gameplay, and set voice chat independently when separate controls exist. Use the labels in the live menu rather than assumed slider names.
- Check chat routing. Confirm whether voice chat is coming through the controller speaker, television, headset, or another output. A routing error can make both teammates and game effects seem too quiet.
- Test in the same environment you play in. Compare a quiet room and your normal room, then verify that explosions do not overpower quieter sounds. Save the configuration only after several matches.
These are general troubleshooting steps, not a verified Modern Warfare 4 preset. If a post-launch update adds an official mix guide or changes menu labels, prefer that current information.

Audio troubleshooting by symptom
Everything sounds muffled
- Confirm that the selected output mode matches your headphones or speakers.
- Check for platform-level surround, equalizer, or volume processing that may be duplicating the game’s own processing.
- Test another known-good output device before changing multiple in-game sliders.
Explosions drown out other sounds
- Reduce the game’s effects or master level only if the live menu provides those controls.
- Lower external system volume rather than increasing individual channels beyond safe listening levels.
- Retest after a full match, because a short firing-range sample may not represent multiplayer peaks.
Voice chat is too quiet
- Verify chat-volume and game-volume separation in the current menu.
- Check console or PC communication output and microphone monitoring settings.
- Ask a teammate to speak while you adjust the level, rather than judging from menu sounds.
You hear no directional difference
- Confirm that both channels of the headset or speaker system work.
- Disable duplicate spatial processing temporarily to identify whether two systems are conflicting.
- Test with a simple left-right sound source before blaming a single slider.
Platform and hardware considerations
The scheduled platform list includes Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2. Settings may have different labels, ranges, or available features on each platform. The DualSense-specific vibration and trigger support applies to PlayStation 5; it should not be assumed for every controller.
A compatible headset can be useful for separating game and chat audio, but the available evidence does not establish that any particular headset, controller model, or audio feature improves Modern Warfare 4 performance. Buy new hardware only for a confirmed need such as stick drift, a broken trigger, poor fit, or missing compatibility—not because a preset requires it.
How to maintain the setup after launch
- Check the in-game controller and audio menus after the October 23 launch update.
- Compare each label and numeric range with the pre-launch table; replace values that no longer exist rather than forcing an approximation.
- Read current official patch notes or support information when an update changes aim, movement, haptics, or audio behavior.
- Keep a short note of your sensitivity, ADS multiplier, deadzones, and audio levels so you can restore them after a reset.
- When troubleshooting, revert to the last known configuration and change one variable at a time.
A post-launch article should update this guide only after the live build has been checked. Until then, the SCUF values remain provisional beta guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Are these official Activision settings?
No. Activision’s official material establishes the release information and broad multiplayer design, while SCUF supplies the numerical controller recommendations. The values are beta/pre-launch advice.
Can I use the preset on Nintendo Switch 2?
Use it only as a reference. The game is listed for Nintendo Switch 2, but platform-specific menu labels, controller features, and available ranges must be confirmed in that version.
Should I replace a controller that cannot use a 3 deadzone?
No. A deadzone value is a tuning choice. Use the lowest drift-free value your controller supports, and replace hardware only when drift, worn triggers, or another fault prevents reliable input.
Will turning vibration off make me aim better?
It may reduce distractions for some players, but no universal advantage is established. SCUF lists vibration off as a preference, while PlayStation 5 supports DualSense vibration and trigger effects for players who want feedback.
Is there a guaranteed setting for hearing footsteps?
No. The available official description mentions refined audio design but does not publish a numeric footstep or dynamic-range preset. Use the live audio menu, a correctly matched output mode, comfortable volume, and separate chat controls where available.
