There is no single best construction time-clock app. The right choice depends on how your crews punch in, how you verify location, whether phones lose connectivity, how precisely you assign hours to jobs and cost codes, and how cleanly approved time reaches payroll. The 2026 comparisons from Workyard and Timeero point to different leaders because each emphasizes a different workflow. Use their lists as starting points, then run finalists on an active jobsite before committing.
This guide maps the major choices and the tests a contractor, owner, payroll administrator, or field supervisor should perform. It covers GPS and geofences, offline punches, crew and kiosk clocking, equipment hours, scheduling, payroll handoff, certified-payroll needs, pricing, and rollout risks.

Which construction time-clock apps are worth shortlisting?
Workyard’s 2026 comparison evaluates GPS accuracy, offline capability, payroll integrations, construction features, crew adoption, buddy-punch prevention, and pricing transparency. Because Workyard publishes that comparison, its “best for” labels are that publisher’s view rather than an independent industry consensus.

What a construction time-clock app must do
A useful system turns a punch into an auditable labor record: who worked, when, where, on which project or phase, and how the approved hours move to payroll. Evaluate the following dimensions in this order.
1. Verify location without confusing capture and enforcement
Ask five separate questions:
- Is location captured only when a worker punches, or continuously while the shift is active?
- Can you draw a geofence around a jobsite?
- Does an out-of-area punch get blocked, flagged for review, or merely displayed after the fact?
- Can supervisors see the location history appropriate to your privacy policy?
- Are these controls available on the plan you are considering?
GPS capture proves where a device reported its position; it does not automatically stop off-site punches. Workyard’s comparison notes that enforcement behavior differs by app and plan. Treat “GPS” and “geofencing” as separate requirements and document the exact behavior during a trial.

Construction sites often have weak cellular service, underground areas, or temporary network outages. Confirm that a worker can clock in and out without a connection, that the phone displays a clear pending or saved state, and that the record synchronizes later with its original time and location. “Offline” is not a standardized promise: one app may queue a punch, another may require a kiosk connection, and another may limit which edits are possible until the device reconnects. Run the test with airplane mode enabled, then verify the resulting timesheet and audit trail after synchronization.
3. Match your job, phase, and cost-code hierarchy
Before a demo, export a small sample of your actual structure: project, building or area, phase, task, and cost code. Have a foreman assign a punch to that hierarchy on a phone, then inspect the approved record in the payroll or accounting destination. A system that records hours but collapses your cost codes will create rework and obscure job profitability.
4. Confirm the payroll and accounting handoff
An integration logo is not proof that your configuration works. Confirm the exact payroll product and edition, supported fields, pay types, overtime and break data, job or customer mapping, approval sequence, export frequency, and any manual correction step. Ask who owns errors after an export and whether an administrator can reverse or re-send a batch without duplicating hours. Keep a written field map for implementation.

5. Make the crew experience fast and accessible
Adoption depends on the first two minutes of a shift. Test one- or two-tap clock-in, crew or foreman punching, language options, permissions for shared devices, and performance on the phones workers already carry. Include a worker with an older handset and one who is not comfortable with complex menus. The comparison guidance recommends trialing finalists on an active jobsite rather than relying on a presentation.

Specialized features that can change the decision
Foreman and crew clocking
If one supervisor records a whole crew, require a clear roster, individual start and stop times, and an audit record showing who entered or edited each punch. Crew punching saves time but can weaken accountability if names, locations, or corrections are not visible.
Kiosk stations
A shared tablet or fixed station can suit a gate, trailer, or shop. Check sign-in speed, identity verification, automatic lockout, offline behavior, and whether a worker can switch jobs without creating duplicate shifts. Compare the device, mounting, power, and connectivity costs with individual-phone deployment.
Scheduling, overtime, and break rules
Scheduling is useful when the same system should publish shifts, warn about approaching overtime, and compare planned versus actual hours. ClockShark’s product sheet lists employee scheduling, overtime notifications, timesheet approvals, and job or task tracking among its capabilities. The sheet also lists Android and iOS apps, location visibility, job-cost categorization, supervisor or foreman crew clocking, geofencing, and kiosk clocking; its retrieved text does not show a publication date, so confirm current availability and plan requirements.
Equipment and non-labor hours
Contractors who bill or analyze machine time need more than employee punches. Ask whether equipment records can be assigned to the same jobs and cost codes, whether operators can switch between labor and equipment time, and whether utilization or maintenance reports are included. Workyard’s comparison describes busybusy as combining labor timekeeping with equipment management and injury reporting, but you should validate the specific equipment types and reports you use.
Certified payroll and prevailing wage
Public-work reporting may require worker classifications, wage components, project identifiers, fringe details, and signed approvals. A general time clock is not automatically a certified-payroll system. If this is a requirement, use a product that explicitly supports your forms and jurisdictions, test a complete reporting period, and have your payroll specialist review the output. No app can guarantee compliance with labor laws in every jurisdiction.

How to compare finalists on a jobsite
- Write the acceptance criteria. List the locations, crew sizes, job and cost-code levels, offline areas, payroll destination, languages, kiosk needs, equipment, and reporting obligations.
- Choose a representative pilot. Include one normal site, one poor-connectivity area, a foreman-led crew, and the phones your workers actually use.
- Run controlled punches. Record on-site, just outside the boundary, and fully off-site punches. Disable connectivity for at least one shift and observe what the worker sees.
- Process corrections. Have a supervisor fix a missed punch, change a cost code, approve a timesheet, and document the audit history and notifications.
- Export real data. Send a sample pay period to your payroll or accounting system. Compare names, hours, overtime, breaks, jobs, cost codes, and pay types field by field.
- Measure adoption. Count failed punches, help requests, late approvals, and duplicate or missing records. Ask workers which step slows them down.
- Price the deployed setup. Include every active worker, administrators, base fee, billing frequency, add-on, device, setup, and support charge—not just the advertised per-user figure.
- Document the decision. Keep screenshots of settings, the integration field map, offline test results, and the plan quotation so a future administrator can reproduce the setup.
Pricing snapshot and how to read it
Workyard’s 2026 comparison reports published per-user prices ranging from free to about $20 per worker per month before base fees and add-ons. Its displayed examples are dated publisher-reported snapshots, not quotes:
| App and example plan | Displayed price | Billing or fee qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Workyard Starter | $6 per user per month | Billed annually. |
| busybusy | From $9.99 per user per month plus a $40 administration fee | Billed annually. |
| ClockShark | $9.50 per user per month plus a $42 base fee | Billing frequency and plan details should be confirmed in the current quote. |
| Buddy Punch | $4.99 per user per month plus a $19 base fee | Billed annually. |
| Lumber | Custom pricing | No public figure was stated in the comparison. |
Prices and plan contents can change. Ask for a current, written quote that states whether the administrator counts as a paid user, whether seasonal workers can be paused, and which GPS, geofence, payroll, equipment, kiosk, and certified-payroll features require higher tiers.
Evidence, limitations, and worker privacy
Timeero’s construction guide cites a result of 79.3% from its “2026 GPS Tracking & Employee Survey.” The guide describes respondents as having direct or indirect experience with disputes in which accurate GPS records would have mattered. This is vendor-reported survey evidence; the underlying methodology was not independently validated here. Use it as an indication that time disputes are a recognized concern, not as a universal measurement of construction workers.
Set a written policy before enabling location tracking. Explain when location is collected, who can view it, how long records are retained, and how workers can challenge an incorrect punch. Configure the least intrusive setting that still meets your verification and payroll needs, and check local privacy and labor requirements with qualified counsel.
Do crews need special phones or hardware?
No physical device is intrinsic to the software. Mobile phones are a documented way for workers to enter time, and a shared kiosk or rugged onsite terminal can be useful in specific environments. If you buy field hardware, treat a rugged Android smartphone as an optional category rather than a requirement: compare durability, battery life, screen visibility, mobile management, replacement cost, and offline behavior. Do not assume a particular model is supported until the app vendor confirms it.
Practical decision guide
- Choose a construction-first GPS workflow when job and cost-code detail, automated location records, and field-service reporting matter more than broad office scheduling.
- Choose equipment-centered tracking when machine hours and labor need to appear in one operational record.
- Choose scheduling-led software when dispatch, shift publication, overtime alerts, and approvals are the daily bottleneck.
- Choose rugged hardware when large crews work at fixed sites where shared or tamper-resistant terminals are more reliable than personal phones.
- Choose ecosystem integration when your payroll or accounting platform is already the system of record and the time app can map every required field.
- Choose certified-payroll capability only after the product reproduces the reports and classifications your contracts require.
The strongest purchase is the one that produces complete, correctly coded, reviewable records under your worst real-world conditions. Compare the published leads, run the same acceptance tests for each finalist, and select the app whose workflow your crew can follow every day.
