OSWorld is the strongest default for testing reliable desktop automation across real applications and operating systems. It provisions Ubuntu, Windows, and macOS environments, supports cross-application workflows, and verifies outcomes with executable evaluators rather than judging an agent only by its click sequence. BrowserGym is the better fit for browser-only research, OpenHands for coding agents that also use a computer, and CUAWright for studying reproducible task demonstrations. A direct computer-use model API can supply the screen, mouse, and keyboard interface, but your team still has to build orchestration, state checks, retries, safety controls, and auditability around it.
The practical answer is therefore not one universal runtime. Use the framework whose environment and evaluation model match the work, then put a repeatable acceptance-test layer—usually OSWorld for desktop workflows—between an agent and production.

What a computer-use agent framework has to make reliable
A computer-use agent observes a screen or application state, chooses an action, executes it with a mouse, keyboard, browser, terminal, or API tool, and continues until a task is complete. Reliability is the probability that this entire loop reaches the required end state, not merely that the agent produced a plausible sequence of clicks.
Frameworks differ in where they draw the boundary. Some provide a benchmark and disposable virtual machines; some provide browser environments and task suites; some provide a general coding-agent runtime with telemetry; and a model API may provide only the visual action interface. Before choosing, evaluate seven dimensions:

- Environment scope: browser-only, one desktop application, or a complete operating system with several applications.
- Action interface: DOM or accessibility selectors, screenshot coordinates, keyboard events, terminal commands, or a hybrid.
- Evaluation: executable checks of the final state versus scoring an action trace or asking a human to judge it.
- Reproducibility: snapshots, deterministic setup, seeded data, and support for defined intermediate starting states.
- Observability: screenshots, accessibility trees, tool calls, timing, token usage, and cost.
- Recovery and safety: bounded retries, precondition checks, rollback, and escalation to a person when the state is ambiguous.
- Operational fit: supported operating systems, local or hosted execution, licensing, and the maintenance required as applications change.
A framework can be excellent for research yet unsuitable as a production RPA runtime. BrowserGym explicitly describes itself as a research framework rather than a consumer product. Conversely, a managed computer-use API can shorten the path to a prototype while leaving nearly every reliability mechanism to the implementation team.
Quick comparison
| Framework or approach | Best use | Environment scope | Evaluation and observability | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OSWorld | Acceptance testing and benchmarking open-ended desktop agents | Real computer environments on Ubuntu, Windows, and macOS; cross-application workflows | Setup and execution-based evaluation; the project page lists 369 task templates and 134 execution-based evaluation functions | A benchmark and environment, not a complete production orchestration service |
| BrowserGym | Browser-centric agent research and benchmark development | Web browsers and web tasks | Includes multiple established web benchmarks and an extensible research framework | Not intended as a consumer product; desktop-app coverage is outside its central purpose |
| OpenHands | Coding or tool-using agents that also operate a browser or desktop | Software-engineering workflows with computer and tool actions | OpenHands Index records model inputs and outputs, tool executions, timing, and cost | Broader than a dedicated desktop-automation runtime; you must define application-specific checks |
| CUAWright | Studying task decomposition and interaction demonstrations | Terminal, Chrome, LibreOffice, email, calendar, image processing, and other applications | Reproducible examples and demonstrations | Examples are research material; production reliability must be validated on your own applications |
| Direct computer-use model API | Teams wanting a managed model with a universal screen, mouse, and keyboard interface | Whatever environment your orchestration layer exposes | Depends on the surrounding system you build | No automatic guarantee of state verification, retries, audit trail, or safe recovery |
OSWorld: the default for real desktop reliability
Choose OSWorld when the question is whether an agent can complete work in a real desktop environment rather than merely manipulate a web page. It supports multimodal agents across Ubuntu, Windows, and macOS and is designed for task setup, execution, and evaluation. Cross-application tasks can require an agent to move information between a browser, an office application, a file manager, and other programs—the situations in which browser-only scores often overstate practical capability.
What its task and evaluator counts mean
The OSWorld project page lists 369 task templates and 134 execution-based evaluation functions (OSWorld authors, project page covering 2024–2026). A task template describes a starting environment and goal; an execution-based evaluator checks whether the required state was actually achieved. That distinction matters: an agent can take a sensible-looking path and still leave the wrong file, account setting, or document content behind.

How to interpret OSWorld scores
OSWorld results come from different snapshots and scoring schemes, so they should not be combined into a single leaderboard. The original OSWorld abstract reported that humans completed 72.36% of tasks while the best model completed 12.24%, with GUI grounding and operational knowledge identified as major difficulties (OSWorld authors, 2024).
A separate published computer-use evaluation reported 38.1% on OSWorld, compared with 22.0% for the previous state of the art and 72.4% human performance (OpenAI, 2025). OSWorld 2.0 later reported 20.6% binary completion and 54.8% partial score for its best listed model on 108 long-horizon workflows (OSWorld 2.0 authors, 2026). Binary completion asks whether the workflow fully succeeded; a partial score can award credit for intermediate progress. The apparently lower binary figure is not a contradiction of the other numbers—it reflects a different evaluation snapshot and harder, longer workflows.
Why OSWorld belongs in a production test plan
Use its environment model to test more than the happy path:
- Start from a clean snapshot and from realistic intermediate states, such as a partially completed form or an already-open document.
- Require executable postconditions: exact file contents, account settings, spreadsheet values, message status, or output location.
- Record screenshots, accessibility information where available, every tool call, latency, and the final evaluator result.
- Repeat the same task with identical setup so that a one-off success is not mistaken for a reliable policy.
- Add ambiguous prompts and recovery cases, including a dialog that appears late, a changed window layout, or an application that reports an error.
OSWorld is not a substitute for your own staging environment. Applications, versions, data, permissions, and network conditions in your business may differ. Treat its score as a comparable research signal and run acceptance tests against the exact applications and policies you will deploy.

BrowserGym: the right boundary for web-agent research
BrowserGym is designed to accelerate web-agent research with an open, extensible framework. Its official repository lists MiniWoB, WebArena, WebArenaVerified, VisualWebArena, WorkArena, AssistantBench, WebLINX, OpenApps, TimeWarp, and Knows. That breadth makes it useful for comparing browser policies, building new tasks, and studying how an agent handles structured and visual web interfaces.
When BrowserGym is a good choice
- Your workload stays inside a browser and the important actions are navigation, form completion, search, extraction, or web-app operations.
- You are developing or comparing policies and need a common set of tasks rather than a production support contract.
- You want to test DOM-aware actions alongside visual interaction in a controlled web environment.
Where it stops being sufficient
BrowserGym maintainers state that it is “not meant to be a consumer product” and advise users to proceed with caution. Production teams therefore need to add environment hardening, credentials and secret handling, application-version pinning, support procedures, end-state checks, retries, and human escalation. If a workflow opens a desktop mail client, edits a local spreadsheet, or moves files between applications, BrowserGym alone does not represent the complete risk surface. Pair browser tests with an operating-system environment such as OSWorld or a staging clone of your own desktop.
OpenHands: computer use inside a coding agent
OpenHands is a better fit when computer interaction is one capability in a broader software-engineering or tool-using agent. A task might involve inspecting a repository, running tests in a terminal, opening a browser to reproduce a bug, and editing files. In that setting, a desktop action is not the entire product; it is one tool in a longer reasoning loop.
Why its telemetry is valuable
The OpenHands Index records model inputs and outputs, tool executions, timing, and cost. That data supports failure analysis that a final pass/fail label cannot provide. You can identify whether a failure came from an incorrect plan, a slow or repeated tool call, a model timeout, or an application response that was misunderstood. Cost and latency measurements also let you impose budgets before an agent enters an unbounded retry loop.

OpenHands does not automatically turn a general coding agent into a reliable desktop-RPA system. Define application-specific preconditions and postconditions, isolate credentials, constrain which commands and files can be touched, and capture visual evidence for every consequential action. For destructive operations, require a confirmation step or a reversible transaction. Use the telemetry to set limits—for example, maximum action count, wall-clock time, or spend—then hand off to a person when those limits are reached.
CUAWright: demonstrations for task design and decomposition
CUAWright is useful for learning how desktop and browser tasks can be decomposed into reproducible interactions. Its examples span terminal work, Chrome, LibreOffice, email, calendar, image processing, and other applications. This variety helps a team examine where a task should be split into subgoals, what state should be captured between steps, and which actions are better expressed through an application API than through pixels.
How to use its examples responsibly
- Extract the task structure: starting state, subgoals, required data, and success condition.
- Replace demonstration-specific accounts, files, and coordinates with your own seeded fixtures.
- Run the task on the exact application versions and operating systems you support.
- Add executable checks for the result instead of accepting the demonstration trace as proof.
- Measure repeated runs and introduce realistic interruptions before promoting the task to production.
CUAWright should be treated as a source of research examples, not as evidence that an agent will be reliable in your environment.

Direct computer-use model APIs: fast interface, unfinished system
A direct computer-use API can provide a managed model that sees screenshots and emits mouse, keyboard, or related computer actions. This is attractive when a team does not want to train a policy or operate a model-serving stack. It is also easy to underestimate the engineering that remains outside the API.

- Orchestration: maintain task state, choose tools, and decide when a subtask is complete.
- Grounding: prefer accessibility metadata, DOM selectors, or application APIs where they are available; use coordinates for genuinely visual interactions.
- Verification: execute a check after every high-value step and at the final state.
- Retry policy: bound retries and vary the recovery action rather than repeating the same click.
- Safety: validate targets before sending, deleting, purchasing, changing permissions, or modifying production data.
- Audit trail: retain screenshots, action arguments, timestamps, model outputs, and evaluator results subject to your privacy policy.
- Human handoff: stop when the state is ambiguous, a permission is unexpected, or a destructive action cannot be rolled back.
A universal screen-and-input interface is therefore a useful primitive, not a reliability guarantee. Evaluate it inside the same harness you will use for any other agent.
How to build a reliable evaluation harness
Reliability improves when planning, grounding, execution, and verification are separate components with explicit contracts. The following procedure works whether the agent is built with OSWorld, BrowserGym, OpenHands, CUAWright-derived tasks, or a direct API.
- Define the end state. Write a machine-checkable condition: a file has an exact hash or content, a row has a specified value, a message is in the required state, or a setting equals a known value. Avoid success criteria such as “the agent appears to have finished.”
- Freeze the starting state. Snapshot the virtual machine or application data, seed records, pin versions, and document network and permission assumptions. Keep a separate fixture for each initial condition you intend to test.
- Choose the least fragile action channel. Use an application API, deterministic selector, or accessibility attribute when one exists. Reserve coordinate clicking and image matching for controls that cannot be addressed more reliably.
- Separate planning from grounding. Let the planner describe the next goal and constraints; let a grounding layer map that goal to the current UI; let an executor perform only validated actions. This makes it possible to diagnose whether a failure was conceptual or perceptual.
- Check preconditions before consequential actions. Confirm the active account, window, selected record, destination path, and current values before sending, deleting, overwriting, or changing permissions.
- Capture evidence continuously. Store screenshots or screen regions, accessibility data where available, tool calls, model outputs, timestamps, latency, token use, and cost. Redact secrets before retention.
- Verify after each milestone. A short executable check can catch drift before it contaminates the next several actions. Stop and recover when a check fails.
- Bound recovery. Set maximum retries, action counts, and wall-clock time. Recovery should reopen a known screen, reload a snapshot, or choose an alternate locator—not blindly repeat a failed click.
- Escalate ambiguity. Ask for human review when two records look plausible, a confirmation dialog differs from the expected one, or the agent cannot establish which state it is in.
- Run repeated trials. Record pass rate, partial progress, failure category, average and tail latency, action count, and cost across multiple runs. Include deliberately ambiguous and interrupted cases.
Why one successful demo proves little
A 2026 reliability study identifies three recurring causes of failure: execution stochasticity, ambiguity in task specifications, and variability in agent behavior. These causes interact. A vague instruction can lead to different plans; a small layout change can alter grounding; and a stochastic policy can choose a different recovery path on the next run.
Design reviews should therefore ask:
- Does the same seeded task pass repeatedly, or did one trajectory happen to work?
- What happens when an expected dialog is delayed, duplicated, or replaced by an error?
- Can the evaluator distinguish a safe partial result from a harmful side effect?
- Does the agent know when to stop instead of continuing after the goal is met?
- Can an operator reconstruct the exact state and action that caused a failure?
Long-horizon workflows deserve special caution. OSWorld 2.0’s 2026 result—20.6% binary completion versus 54.8% partial score on 108 long workflows—shows how quickly full completion can lag behind intermediate progress. A production metric that counts only “some progress” can hide expensive manual cleanup.

Costs, infrastructure, and maintenance
The supplied framework descriptions do not establish a universal license price, hosted-service fee, or hardware requirement for any option. Total cost instead depends on the environment you provision, model usage, storage for traces and screenshots, parallel test capacity, and the engineering time required to maintain fixtures as applications change.
Budget for more than successful action execution. Repeated reliability trials multiply model calls; visual evidence consumes storage; isolated desktops require images and patching; and human review is a real operating cost when ambiguity cannot be resolved safely. OpenHands-style telemetry can expose these costs per task. For every candidate, measure model spend, wall-clock time, infrastructure utilization, manual intervention rate, and the cost of recovering from a failed side effect.
A practical rollout plan
- Inventory workflows. Rank them by business value, data sensitivity, reversibility, application count, and consequence of error.
- Build a small fixture set. Include clean starts, partially completed states, changed layouts, slow responses, and realistic error dialogs.
- Establish evaluators first. If the end state cannot be checked automatically, make the task observational or add a human-review gate rather than claiming full automation.
- Benchmark alternatives. Use OSWorld for broad desktop comparability, BrowserGym for web policy research, OpenHands for coding-agent loops, and CUAWright-derived tasks for decomposition studies.
- Harden the chosen agent. Add selector and accessibility preference, precondition checks, milestone verification, bounded retries, secret isolation, and audit logging.
- Run a shadow phase. Let the agent propose or perform reversible actions while a person approves consequential ones. Record every intervention and failure category.
- Expand only on measured evidence. Promote a workflow when repeated runs meet the required pass rate, safety checks hold, recovery is understood, and the maintenance owner is identified.
Decision checklist
- Is the workload browser-only, single-application, or cross-application?
- Can the required outcome be checked by an executable evaluator?
- Are deterministic selectors, accessibility attributes, or application APIs available?
- What operating systems, application versions, accounts, and data fixtures must be supported?
- How many repeated trials are needed to estimate variance?
- What action, time, and spend limits prevent runaway behavior?
- Which actions require confirmation, rollback, or human handoff?
- What screenshots, tool calls, timing, model outputs, and costs must be retained?
- Who will update snapshots and evaluators when the application UI changes?
Frequently asked questions
Which framework should I start with for a general desktop-agent evaluation?
Start with OSWorld. Its operating-system coverage, cross-application tasks, and execution-based evaluators align most closely with the reliability question. Recreate critical tasks in your own staging environment before deployment.
Can BrowserGym test a desktop email or spreadsheet workflow?
It is centered on browser interaction. A browser-based mail or spreadsheet application can fit its scope, but a workflow involving native desktop programs, local files, or system dialogs needs an operating-system test environment as well.
Best Value
Are the published OSWorld percentages directly comparable?
No. The 12.24%, 38.1%, and OSWorld 2.0 figures come from different evaluation snapshots, task sets, models, and scoring schemes. Report the source, date, metric, and task definition with every number.
Do computer-use APIs remove the need for test engineering?
No. They can provide the model and input interface, but orchestration, grounding, postcondition checks, retries, safety gates, observability, and human handoff remain system responsibilities.
What is the most important reliability metric?
Use end-to-end pass rate on a defined task set, supplemented by partial score, failure category, repeated-run variance, latency, cost, and unsafe-side-effect rate. A high partial score is not a substitute for completing the required end state.
